Food and Cars Will Rev Up Main Street

Food and cars will take the spotlight on Saturday, July 26, when the annual Taste of Mount Joy Cruisin’ Cuisine event takes place along Main Street from New Haven to Jacob streets. The festivities will run from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

For more than 20 years, various organizations have united to offer the event, which brings together representatives from the Mount Joy Rotary, Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems, Mount Joy Lions Club, Voyage Mount Joy and Friends of Donegal.

Part car show, part food fest, the event draws thousands of people to browse all classes of automobiles and motorcycles while indulging in the variety of

local food Mount Joy offers.

“Come for the food,” said Linda Eberly, a member of the organizing committee. “People enjoy the cars,

of course, but this event also highlights our local restaurants. Mount Joy has everything from diners to taverns to ethnic foods. We have a

Sunday Concerts Will Combine Music and Community

“Music in Memorial Park is a nice way to spend an evening in Mount Joy, enjoying live music outdoors in a relaxed and beautiful setting,” said Michele Emenheiser, executive director of the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the series. “Bring a blanket or lawn chair - and your friends and family. Many of our downtown Chamber member businesses are

In June, Nina “Claire” Reese and Marian Soutner celebrated their birthdays, each wearing a sash that summed up both women perfectly. It read, “100 and Fabulous.”

Claire and Marian, both residents of Juniper Village at Mount Joy, marked their 100th birthdays in May. They were treated to a party a few weeks later at the retirement community, complete with a big cake bearing their names, jumbo-size birthday cards, sparkling crowns to wear and lots of good wishes from residents who sang “Happy Birthday.”

Claire was born May 22, 1925, in Hazlehurst, Ga. She fondly remembers summers spent swimming in the lake and a childhood without television, where outdoor activities were daily delights.

“I loved fishing or reading books,” Claire recalled. As a young woman, she found joy in swing dancing; proudly graduated from high school; and became known for her talents as a seamstress, cook and baker.

She was married to William C. Reese Jr. (known as Bill) for 53 years before his death in 1998. Together they had three children, four grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Now at 100, Claire enjoys the simple pleasures of life, reading her favorite novel, “Gone with the Wind”; listening to music; and enjoying fresh air.

When asked what she is most proud of while reflecting on her century of life, she immediately answered, “My family.”

She also offered advice to younger generations, including treasuring a strong family support

Market St., Mount Joy, will celebrate National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, July 20, with a free lunch of hotdogs; potato chips; beverages; and ice cream sundaes with unlimited toppings, cones and warm waffles. The event will be held at 12:30 p.m. following the 11 a.m. service of Holy Communion. The ice cream social will also include ice cream trivia and a visit by a special guest, Maggie-Bird. National Ice Cream Day was declared in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan to be celebrated on the third Sunday of July.

system and to always “be on your good behavior.”

Marian was born on May 3, 1925, and grew up in Marysville, Pa., during the Great Depression. She remembers the frugality of those times, noting, “I would never have asked my father for a five-cent candy,” even though candy remains her favorite treat.

A lifelong volunteer and music lover, Marian played piano at her church’s Sunday school and found fulfillment in giving back through the Silver Spring Ambulance & Rescue Asso-

As in past years, guests will be able to create their

ciation and her church. She worked for the federal government for more than 35 years and later became the secretary of the local chapter of the Federal Retirees Association. She was married to Herman K. Soutner, a World War II veteran who passed away in 1992. They have two children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Marian’s favorite book is the Bible, and she finds joy in church hymns and mem-

ories of growing blueberries in her yard. When asked about the key to longevity, she shared, “Volunteering and being a part of the WCTU - Woman’s Christian Temperance Union.”

Marian was also featured in a special oral history project by the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library in Mechanicsburg, sharing her experience as a woman during World War II. To read the story, visit https:// bit.ly/4eJjPXy.

Teacher Pens Book for Library Presentation

Adam Zurn quickly needed to find a book to discuss during an upcoming presentation at a local library.

So he wrote and published a nonfiction children’s paperback in three weeks.

“I think the saying is, Necessity is the mother of all invention,’” Adam said, paraphrasing a quote often attributed to Plato.

Adam will talk about his debut book, “Canassatego and His Six Arrows,” on Thursday, July 24, at 10:30 a.m. at the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy.

“I’ve spoken there in the past for some adult events, and they asked me if I wanted to do a children’s

program,” the Conestoga Township resident said. The title of the program series is “So You Want To Be A ...” Adam’s answer is adventurer. “That sounded like a lot of fun and would be neat,” he said.

Adam explained that the library program includes show-and-tell, an activity, and reading a story. He will show the kids patio pavers he engraved with carvings of petroglyphs, which will be an interactive experience for the attendees. “What I couldn’t find was a book that kept it in this Native American theme, a book for children that deals with local Indigenous groups,” said Adam. “So I was like, ‘You know what? I’m going to make one.’”

Adam’s 30-page book contains the true story of Canas-

satego, interspersed with what he calls “fun facts,” as well as artwork he made by enhancing paintings with Photoshop and artificial intelligence (AI). The tale had already been told on Adam’s website, https://uncharted lancaster.com, and he used Amazon’s self-publishing platform. The book can be purchased on the website and on Amazon by searching for “Adam Zurn” or “Canas-

satego and His Six Arrows.” He said the book is intended for kids ages 7 to 11 and has earned the endorsement of his wife, Maribeth, a firstgrade teacher at Conestoga Elementary.

Adam’s account of Canassatego takes place during the 1744 Treaty of Lancaster conference that started June 22 and ended on July 4. Adam said several

open on Sundays, so come early and do some shopping before the music starts!”

Each event will feature food starting at 5 p.m., with music from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The concerts will be held in Mount Joy Memorial Park, 101 Marietta Ave.

The 2025 Music in Memorial Park lineup will kick off on Sunday, July 27, with a performance by The Kracker Beez and food served by Spud Muffin Food Truck. “The Kracker Beez have been entertaining Mount Joy audiences for years, with performances dating back to at least 2017 and returning each summer since 2021,” Emenheiser shared, noting that the three-piece band plays classic party rock ‘n’ roll.

On Sunday, Aug. 3, Temple Avenue Jazz Trio will entertain with jazz and swing, and food will be available from Piper Belles Food Truck.

The series will wrap up on Sunday, Aug. 10, when The Chestnuts will perform a mix of country, rock,

folk and blues. The band features David Eichler, a retired Donegal High School teacher and current Mount Joy Borough Council member. Food that evening will include free hot dogs along with a free ice cream social while supplies last.

The final show in the series will mark a special occasion, Emenheiser shared.

“When we were planning this year’s Music in Memorial Park schedule, we saw that Aug. 10 would be Mount Joy’s 174-anda-half birthday and also the date of the last Music in Memorial Park concert of the season. Since that date also coincided with the annual ice cream social provided by Mary and Clair Ginder, the board decided to make it a special celebration,” she remarked. “We booked a band with local ties, invited the Mount Joy Area Historical Society to share about the town’s history and how it’s being preserved, and board vice president Denny Brandt

and board member Greg Sallade offered to provide free hot dogs.”

Members of the historical society are looking forward to this unique opportunity to highlight Mount Joy’s history.

“We as the historical society are excited that we get to play a part in educating our town about our past as we celebrate our half birthday,” said Linda Eberly, vice president of the Mount Joy Area Historical Society. “Knowing our history helps us develop vision and ideas for our future. We invite everyone to help us preserve our past for our future generations.”

Brandt, who is a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway, noted that supporting the community event is important to him and to Sallade, a State Farm insurance agent.

“Mount Joy means a lot to us, and sharing some free hot dogs is a fun way to give back,” Brandt said. The Ginders have been providing the ice cream for the ice cream social for

about 25 years, and they also view it as an opportunity to give back to the residents of Mount Joy.

Music in Memorial Park is sponsored by Diamond Members of the Chamber, Members 1st Federal Credit Union, TownLively and Sweet 16 WPDC, and it is made possible by all of the members of the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce.

Handicapped-accessible parking spaces will be available along Delta Street, and a portable restroom will be set up behind the gazebo courtesy of John Kline Septic Services.

hundred members of the Six Nations confederacy met in the courthouse located in Penn Square alongside representatives from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. One goal was to get the Iroquois to relinquish some land claims in Virginia and Maryland and encourage the tribe to stay neutral or support the English colonists during the imminent conflict with France.

On the last day of the conference, Canassatego, a well-respected tribe leader, gave a speech in the courthouse. Without giving away the major plot point that is the focus of the book, Canassatego shows that the colonists need to come together like the Iroquois have done. His demonstration was so stirring, it impressed Ben Franklin, who included it in his newspaper. There is also a nod to Canassatego on the $1 bill, Adam said.

Originally from Susquehanna County, Adam came to the area to attend Millersville University and never left. He became intrigued by local history. “You just start asking questions,” he said.

“And I think we often take our own local history for granted, but, you know, we go places to and ask those questions. And so I think that’s what happened to me. I came here and started asking questions.”

Adam was drawn to Canassatego’s story because it answered one of the questions he had been asking. “This happened in Lancaster and had an impact on the nation,” he said. “Going to places as a kid, I would always wonder, ‘Did anything happen in this town?’”

Adam began working on his second book eight months prior to beginning the first. It is a tale of

ghosts and monsters in Lancaster County. “That’s like a 200-page book,” he said. “That’s a lot of work, and I’ve been working on that for months. So this was a fun little side project to kind of take a break from that and put this together.”

Adam recently completed his 23rd year as a teacher at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. He began his career as a woodshop instructor and now teaches computer science and video. Adam uses his free time over the summer to work on Uncharted Lancaster and give guided tours through what he calls “the tunnels of Enola” from Shenks Ferry to Safe Harbor.

huge variety of food in our town.”

Prior to the show opening, the Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems will serve a free pancake breakfast at St. Marks’s United Methodist Church, 37 E. Main St., from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Food vendors will open at 11 a.m. at a food court area set up along Main and Delta streets.

Participants will include Two Cousin’s, Florin Church of the Brethren, Mount Joy Lions Club, Mount Joy Church of God, Bube’s Brewery, Mount Joy Rotary Club, Rita’s of Mount Joy, Noel’s Café, The Donut Guys, Harvey’s Main Street BBQ and The TacoRV.

the show.

The Taste of Mount Joy offers an opportunity to highlight the community and provide financial support for the participating organizations, said Ferne Silberman, co-chair of the event.

“All of the groups who put this on are nonprofits, and they will get a certain amount of the funds,” she said. “Everything left over will go to a community project yet to be determined. All of the funds go back locally.

Kiwanis, Lions, Rotary, Voyage, Friends of Donegal, all of these groups, we put our proceeds right back into the community. This event is really a group effort to support Mount Joy.”

Restaurants along the Main Street show area will also be open during the day, including Beanie’s, Joy’s Tavern, The Copper Cup, Dutch Country Pretzels, Hulk Hoagies, YAH Brew, Tres Hermanos and Twisted Bine.

For the car show, more than 40 awards will be presented by various businesses, clubs and organizations. Major event sponsors are Kinley Auto Group and Marietta Notary. Gold sponsors are Members 1st Federal Credit Union and Liquid Wrap Labs. Numerous other businesses are also sponsoring the event, and the “Best of Show” award will be sponsored by the organizations coordinating the show. Four memorial awards will also be presented at an award ceremony that will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the event tent near Market Street. Although advance registration for the car show has closed, the first 250 registrants will receive a dash plaque featuring last year’s Best of Show winner, a 1913 Paige Glenwood owned by Kelly Williams. People may also register their cars for an additional cost on the day of

Eberly noted that bringing the various service organizations together helps to increase the event’s impact.

“We want to show the community that this is not just Kiwanis doing something or just Rotary or just the Lions,” she said. “It’s all of our community groups combined. We can do better together.”

Silberman thanked the Mount Joy Borough officials for their support, noting that the event would not be possible without it. Other community supporters include JB Hostetter & Sons, which provides the tables and chairs in the food court area.

For the car show, all vehicles must enter the show via the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center off Route 772 and Old Market Street, where registration and packet pickup will take place. Parking will begin at 9 a.m. No cars will be permitted on Main Street in the main parking area before 9 a.m. or after 11 a.m. No dogs or bicycles are allowed with show vehicles.
