Brittany’s Hope Remains Focused On Helping Children Organization Marks 20th Anniversary By Francine Fulton
In attendance at Brittany’s Ball in March, which was held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Brittany’s Hope, were Jaden (left), who hails from China, and Theo, from South Korea. Both boys were adopted by families in Mount Joy. Brittany’s Hope provides adoption grants that allow families to adopt a child with special needs from another country.
What started out as a year of celebration to observe the 20th anniversary of Brittany’s Hope, a nonprofit organization that helps orphaned children around the world, has evolved into an effort to continue providing services during the coronavirus pandemic. Brittany’s Hope, which is based in Elizabethtown, has had to change its focus from celebrating to fundraising. “We were planning all these wonderful things to celebrate and commemorate our work over the past 20 years,” stated Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director. “We’re now basically redefining our efforts and getting creative on how to carry on the work we started. In place of celebration, we are revamping,
Friends In Action (FIA) International, a nonprofit organization located in Middletown, recently partnered with pastors in Bolivia to provide COVID-19 relief to indigenous people groups. Aid has included medical care, medical supplies and food. FIA uses infrastructure projects as a platform to share
the Gospel with unreached indigenous people groups. Recent projects aided residents of the hundreds of tiny villages along the coasts of the Amazon River, which are especially vulnerable to COVID-19. For most of the villagers, their town hospital has only 35 beds and one ventilator and is a
multiple-day journey by boat and on foot. Additionally, some villagers travel two days from their remote locations to find medicines such as acetaminophen. FIA’s field leaders, Donna and Gary Ferch, reported that close to 90% of FIA’s co-workers in the area have contracted the virus. See FIA pg 2
In addition to providing adoption grants, Brittany’s Hope, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, provides humanitarian aid, including food, to orphans around the world.
LCCTC FFA Recognizes Member Achievements Members of the LCCTC FFA chapter were recognized in a virtual awards ceremony on May 26. All chapter members are part of the Animal Production Science & Technology Program at the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC), 1730 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. The chapter members are high school seniors and will receive Pennsylvania FFA Convention T-shirts as a graduation gift sponsored by the Lancaster County Agriculture Council. Throughout the school year, all students had an opportunity to job shadow, interact with guest speakers on a variety of topics, visit a variety of places related to animal science on curriculum field trips, and earn several industry certifications.
Katie Brandsema, Manheim Township, was named the Outstanding Student for having the top grades in the program throughout the entire school year. Katie’s award included a monetary prize sponsored by the Lancaster Dairy Herd
Improvement Association, where she has worked as a cooperative student since November 2019. Katie was the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) chapter president and the LCCTC FFA vice president during the past school year. See LCCTC FFA pg 7
The 2020 Animal Production Science & Technology students, all of whom are members of the LCCTC FFA chapter, visited Kopec Veterinary Associates earlier this school year.

reworking and restructuring to continue to breathe life into the important work we do at Brittany’s Hope.” Fortunately, the organization was able to hold the first Brittany’s Ball: A Boots & Bow Tie Gala on March 7 at Stone Gables Estate in Elizabethtown. The fundraising gala took place just before the shutdown orders went into place. However, its 20th annual golf tournament at Conestoga Country Club in August has been canceled. Plans call for the Brittany’s Hope 5K to take place on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Stone Gables, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown, but it will be held with a new socially distant format.
