Marietta Fireworks Will Feature Food and Fun

The skies over Marietta will come alive once again this Independence Day, as the longtime community fireworks celebration returns to War Memorial Park, 344 E. Walnut St., on Friday, July 4. The festivities will begin at 4 p.m. with family-friendly activities and will culminate with the fireworks display around 9:15 p.m., conditions permitting.

Organized by fireworks enthusiast Gary Schatz, Marietta Fireworks will feature a new addition to the festivities this year.

“We’re starting a line of food trucks at the park,” Gary said.

“Our goal is to have six.” One of the trucks will be a brand-new offering from Mumma’s Eats & Treats, operated by the former owners of the Clearview Diner.

The truck will serve items including hamburgers, hot dogs and french fries.

Again this year, Marietta Fireworks is partnering with Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta, to offer a place to enjoy the fireworks and experience a fun atmosphere beforehand.

The parking lot at the church will open at 4 p.m., and while parking is free, donations will be accepted.

“Donations are one of our

biggest moneymakers for the year,” Gary said.

His wife, Raeann, describes the festivities at the church as “family-friendly tailgating.” People come early to enjoy kids’ activities, including bounce houses, face painting and a barrel train, and to eat and socialize.

Food trucks will begin serving food at the church at 4 p.m., and children’s activities will begin at 4:30 p.m. Live music will be provided by Common Vine from

Rachel Peters, the music teacher at Donegal Primary School (DPS), firmly believes that students benefit most from a variety of educational opportunities. She saw that firsthand when first-, second- and third-graders participated in Music Mondays with Mr. Matt, a program presented by musician Matt Wheeler.

“I truly believe that students don’t learn in silos, so any time we can utilize cross-curricular strategies, I feel the students really benefit,” said Peters, who just wrapped up her first year teaching at DPS. “It’s been a fun experience to hear how they related to the Mr. Matt songs and see them get excited to watch the videos every Monday.”

This is the fifth year Wheeler has presented the music program to students. It focuses on social emotional learning (SEL)

vocabulary, with Wheeler writing and sharing songs based on this topic. Wheeler presented weekly videos from March through May, and the program culminated in a school-wide assembly on June 4.

“I made recordings of each of the SEL songs, and teachers

Lynn Walker was worried.

In 2013, after her son Caleb had undergone his third brain surgery, a friend sent the family away for an extended weekend trip to Ocean City, N.J.

Caleb had been gone for more than two hours on a beach bike expedition, and Lynn was getting anxious. “Caleb comes bursting through the door and says, ‘I know what I’m going to

do! I’m going to start a foundation!’” Lynn recalled.

Caleb explained that while biking by the ocean he had felt normal for the first time in four years. “He said, ‘When you get away from everything else, you get to feel normal. This is what I want to give people,’” said Lynn.

For the last 11 years, the organization Caleb formed, A Week Away Foundation, has been providing families with weeklong vacations. “Our mission is to

provide respite weeks for families that are battling a life-threatening illness, thereby enabling them to come back refreshed from some time away so they can re-engage and continue to fight their disease,” said Lynn, who is the director of the registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

There are no age limitations for people going on the trip, which is for a patient diagnosed by a medical doctor and undergoing treatment, as well as family members and friends who have been caring for the patient since the diagnosis.

The site of the respites must be drivable and within a 500-mile radius of A Week Away’s coverage area, which is made up of Adams, Berks, Bucks, Chester, Cumberland, Delaware, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Montgomery, Perry, and York counties, along with Philadelphia.

Caleb was a seemingly healthy senior at Lampeter-Strasburg High School two months before graduation with plans to study pre-med and wrestle in college.

He was briefly paralyzed following the first of his six brain surgeries but bounced back and was able to run and ride a bicycle.

Lynn recalls a visit to the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania when Caleb was 18. “He put his head on my shoulder and started crying,” she said. “That wasn’t like him at all.”

Caleb had noticed a young mother holding a tiny infant and said, “We’re so blessed. We have our family and our faith. Who helps them?”

Lynn said, “That was the day the seed (for the foundation) was planted. On the boardwalk, it sprouted.”

see the foundation grant its first respite and deliver a speech during the tree-lighting ceremony. Caleb died days later on Dec. 3, 2014, after becoming unconscious while writing thank you letters. It was one week before his 24th birthday.

Lynn keeps a collage on her desk featuring photos of some of the businesses and community members who have helped the foundation raise more than $2.5 million. “It’s a reminder that so many people have been with us for 11 years,” she said.

Lancaster County Motors Subaru sponsors the annual August golf tournament, which is already sold out. Members 1st Federal Credit Union, Speedwell Construction, and Hess Auctioneers are also major contributors. “My favorite donation is someone who gives $2 a month,” Lynn said. “That always puts a smile on my face.”

A Week Away has granted 305 respites. Beaches are a popular destination, and the foundation also provides trips to the Pennsylvania mountains and will send families to urban areas if the patient has a particular interest in a cultural activity.

“The life of anyone involved with fighting cancer or any chronic life-threatening illness is turmoil,” Lynn said. “It’s like living in a cement mixer, and they never, ever get a break. If we can take them out of that world, that reality, for a week and give them a stress-free experience at no cost for them, we can buy time. And if we have time, we can give God and science a chance to work.”

Before he was diagnosed with brain cancer after having a seizure,

When he realized he would not have time to graduate from Millersville, Caleb took on a variety of jobs in the city to raise money for A Week Away.

The Light the Tree campaign is one of the foundation’s big fundraisers. In 2014, Caleb arranged for an ill child to hit the button that turned on the lights on the Christmas tree in Penn Square. In October, he suffered 40 seizures in one day, and doctors told him he likely had less than a month to live. “You have to get me to my fundraiser,” Caleb responded. He survived long enough to

“It’s Caleb’s legacy,” said Lynn, who keeps a quote in her office that reads, “I’ve not heard your voice in years, but my heart has conversations with you every day.”

“This is my way of being able to support his dreams,” Lynn added. “There’s a little selfish part, too. It puts me in touch with people who loved him and who he loved.”

There are many avenues to help A Week Away, including the donation of a property that can host respites. “God has blessed this organization. He has taken care of it,” Lynn said. “(The organization) always needs money, but the best way to help us is to give us referrals. We want to help people.”

In Memoriam

EDITH MAE SCHWAB

Edith Mae Schwab passed from this life on June 9, 2025, in her home. She was 97. Edith was best known as a devoted wife to Henry, and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. To their family, Edith and Henry’s 67year marriage was an enduring picture of steadfast faithfulness. Since Henry’s passing in 2021, Edith kept a lamp next to a photo of him. Each day she’d greet him first thing in the morning and later say ‘Good night, Henry,’ turning it off as the last thing she did before retiring for the night. Born in 1927 in Laureldale, PA, to Urban John Jones and Esther Merkel Jones, Edith’s early childhood was marked by the Great Depression. The fourth of five children, Edith recalled one day when they only had a nickel left in the house. Her teenage years were marked by WWII, when she lost her beloved brother George, who was a U.S. Marine. It was in processing this profound loss, and facing her doubts, which led to her coming to faith in Jesus and sensing His hand in her life. Her faith grew from that point. As a young woman Edith had a vibrant life. She attended the Charles Morris Price School of Advertising and Journalism at night, while working at Curtis Publishing and then the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin. Later, when her children were in high school, she picked this career back up, working at Springhouse Publishing, where she was voted their first ever Employee of the Year. She loved working with words. She also loved music and singing- at one point, as a young woman, she was a member of four different choirs. A highlight was singing Handel’s Messiah with the Philadelphia Choral Society at the Academy of Music. She also joyfully joined a roving quartet that sang in many tiny churches in New Jersey, and at least once, was part of a singing flash mob on the Philadelphia subway. She was also a member of American Youth Hostels and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She shared many of these experiences with her beloved sister, Marie. Edith was devoted to her family and wanted her children to have a broad range of experiences, encouraging all their endeavors. From 1988 on, she fully embraced her ‘Mommom’ persona. She loved her grandchildren fiercely, celebrating both their accomplishments and their character as they grew to adulthood. Edith was a 30-year cancer survivor, overcame many other physical challenges, and while her hearing and sight failed her in her final years, her mind remained sharp and curious to the end, inquiring about family members even on her very last evening.

Edith is survived by her three children; George, husband of Mary; Nancy, wife of Grant Sung; and John, husband of Stephanie; also, by her nine grandchildren; George, Corrie, Angela, Adam, Daniel, Timothy, Andrew, Elizabeth, and Kaela; and her five great-grandchildren; Arabella, Violet, Zoë, Martin, and Lillian. John, Stephanie, and Corrie were thankful for the opportunity to care for Edith in her final years.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday morning, June 28 at Kraybill Meetinghouse, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy, PA 17552, at 10:00 followed by a light lunch. Visitors will be received at 9:00 a.m. A graveside service and interment will follow at Whitemarsh Memorial Park, 1169 Limekiln Pike, Ambler, PA at 3:00.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the building fund of Proclamation Presbyterian Church, 81 E Main St., Mount Joy, PA 17552 or to support the ministry of Corrie Schwab in Japan (#400886, Mission to the World, 1600 North Brown Road, Lawrenceville, GA 30043-8141). have access to them and can use them in their classes,” Wheeler explained. “That generally means that the students know the songs and excitedly sing along at the assemblies - a real highlight.”

Wheeler created videos featuring performances of the eight songs he wrote that highlight emotions, self-control, problem-solving, respect, responsibility, kindness, relationships and gratitude. The videos aired during morning announcements on Mondays. New this year, Wheeler included an opportunity for students to apply what they learned.

“In talking with Rachel … and Kim Garner, the kindergarten teacher who spearheaded the creation of this artist residency, we discussed the need for practical ways for the students to be able to connect the SEL concepts to real-life scenarios in their own lives,” Wheeler shared. “Yes, self-control is a good idea, but how does that look for a kindergartner at recess? A first-grader getting on the school bus? A second-grader at lunch in the cafeteria? The ‘Let’s Think’ segments follow the song performances to talk about this - and include a fun new jingle.”

Wheeler’s artist residency was made possible by the Donegal Foundation, which supplied

grant funds to support the project.

“The residency started in the spring of the 2020-2021 school year, in the midst of the pandemic, and was fully virtual then, but it still brought so much joy and was a win for everybody involved,” Wheeler said. “I think that it’s fair to say it exceeded our expectations for it.”

Peters said she was impressed by the program and what the students took away from it at a pivotal age.

“There is so much foundational learning that happens in these primary grade levels,” she said. “Teachers at DPS do a great job of emphasizing students’ social and emotional learning and skills, and Mr. Matt’s songs truly reinforce that work already being done. Students get yet another touchstone for several important concepts including respect, self-control and kindness.”

She emphasized how well Wheeler connects with the young audience.

“Students are also exposed to a relatable musician who they then get to see in concert at the end of the year,” she shared. “Having opportunities to experience music in all its many forms, including live music events, is such a valuable

part of a well-rounded school experience.”

Although his residency has wrapped up for the year, Wheeler hopes the lessons imparted will last.

“Music is a powerful memory aid, and to utilize music to reinforce such good, positive messages is fantastic,” he said. “It’s a joy to bring my musical abilities to this to encourage the students to better understand and apply kindness, gratitude and respect - and all of the SEL concepts - to prepare them to flourish as they grow.”

MS FitEffect Puts Strength Into Motion

Mark Mueller and his wife, Jackie, took a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) and turned it into an opportunity to help others. Jackie was diagnosed with MS in 1998, and the couple sought to treat the disease as naturally as possible, without medication. They experimented with nutrition and exercise to see what worked and what didn’t, and their research led to MS FitEffect, a free, 10-week program for people with MS. The next session will run from Saturday, Sept. 6, through Saturday, Nov. 15, at Elizabethtown Fitness Club, 626 S. Market St.

“Each participant selects a time with their trainer for their private one-hour weekly session,” Mark explained. “We have sessions available Monday through Saturday in the morning, afternoon and some evenings. It is based on the participant’s and trainer’s availability.”

As Mark shared, MS FitEffect is personalized.

“The program is different for everyone, as the trainer custom-designs the program for the particular participant,” he stated. “MS is different for everyone; there are no two people who share the same set of symptoms at the same intensities with the same presentation of symptoms.”

While specifics vary for each participant, the program focuses on strength, stamina and stability for all sessions.

“We use a combination of stretching, relaxation techniques, weight training, cardiovascular training, balance and gait training and functional training,” Mark said. “We meet each participant where they are at and move them forward from there. We focus on helping them achieve a better quality of life by working with them on activities of daily living that have become difficult for them.”

MS FitEffect is open to anyone with MS or any demyelinating disease.

“We accept any age but require a parent or guardian signature for anyone under the age of 18,” Mark shared. “Whether the person uses a wheelchair, walker, cane or is mobile without assistance, the program is for them. All we require is proof of diagnosis.”

The Muellers held their first MS FitEffect sessions in 2015. Since then, they have received positive feedback and plenty of client testi-

monials touting the benefits of the program.

“Many of our participants tell us that they wish they had started the program sooner and not have put it off thinking they did not need it,” Mark said. “They are all very surprised at how much unrealized potential they had.”

Mark encourages anyone who may benefit from the program to learn more about MS FitEffect.

“We are not physical therapy,” he said. “We are unlike any other organization. When you work with us, you will have our full attention for one hour, and we will work together on the custom program designed for you. We will work at your pace and move you forward in steps that you can manage.”

American Legion Auctions Blanket, Plans Ceremony

At the 62nd annual Antiques, Art, Craft, and Collectibles Show held on May 26, members of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809 auctioned off a handmade afghan created by Nila Grose. Maytown resident Alexis Bortner won the blanket. The auction raised $175, which will be used to purchase clothing and gifts for a resident of the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The public is invited to a ceremony on Saturday, June 28, at 10 a.m. in Maytown Square to honor a Maytown resident who is a field medic in the Army. She will be presented with a quilt of valor hand-stitched by the Red Rose Quilters Guild. The ceremony will include remarks and the reading of a poem. The service member’s name has not been released to the public because the presentation will be a surprise.
