“This town has a passion for fireworks - big time,” said Gary Schatz, a lifelong resident of Marietta. “I think that’s why we’re so successful. The surrounding towns just love fireworks, too.”

Marietta Fireworks will take place on Saturday, July 4. The show will begin at 9:15 p.m. or when conditions permit, but the fun starts earlier.

There are two locations that will host activities leading up to the display.

People are invited to War Memorial Park, 344 E . Walnut St., Marietta, to enjoy an old-fashioned carnival beginning at 4:30 p.m.

From Bags to Bench

Students at Donegal Primary School learned a lesson in patience and the value of reuse when they participated in a program to earn a bench made from recycled plastic. They also discovered how supportive the wider Donegal community can be.

To participate in the Trex Recycling Challenge, the students had to collect 1,000 pounds of plastic over the course of one year. They started collecting in December of 2024, recycling breakfast and lunch bags and other items such as grocery bags from home.

By the end of that school year, however, they hit a snag.

“Because we are not in school from June until August, we were not able to collect much over the summer,” said art teacher Jessica Good, who organized the project.

“This meant that as we got closer to December of 2025 and the end of our year window, we needed to enlist the help of the parents and community. They stepped up and helped us reach our 1,000 pounds just in time!”

Once the half-ton had been collected, Good submitted the plastic to Trex, where the material was transformed into a bench.

The bench is, appropriately, green to match Donegal’s school color.

It will be installed on the school’s playground.

Turning recycled plastic into benches is just one initiative of Trex’s NexTrex program. The program empowers community and commercial partners to divert plastic waste from ending up in landfills and give it new life as sustainable benches or Trex composite decking. Recyclable items include bread and produce bags, newspaper sleeves,

The carnival will feature games, bounce houses, music and more.

“We’re doing food trucks, which we started doing last year, and we’re trying to bring a nostalgic-style carnival to the community,” Schatz said. “I want the community to come out, have a good time, meet people and have fun before the fireworks show.”

Activities at the church will include food trucks, a barrel train for kids, yard games and entertainment from juggler Chris Ivey, beginning at 7 p.m.

The two options for viewing the fireworks each provide unique experiences, Schatz said.

“From the church, you’re up high, and that is a nice way to see the show,” he commented. “The park is ground level, so the show is all aerial. Plus, you get a better concussion off the mountains at the park.”

Fundraising for Marietta Fireworks is a year-round job for Schatz, who hosts booths at community events such as Marietta Day and the Cherry Blossom Festival, while also participating in Memorial Day parades to collect donations.

Marietta Fireworks has also begun selling memorabilia to raise money, including T-shirts, mugs, lanyards, jar openers and Schatz’s favorite - dog bandanas with paw prints and the word “fireworks” circled in red with a line through it.

In the past, Marietta Fireworks has enlisted volunteers to work a “bucket b r i g a d e ,” w a n d e r i n g through the crowd at the event to collect donations.

This year, the group has changed its strategy.

“In addition to the merchandise, people can support us by donating from a QR code right from their car as they drive in or out of the event,” Schatz said, noting that signs will be displayed to make donating quick and easy.

With rising prices and increased tariffs, it’s getting more and more expensive to put on a quality fireworks show, but Schatz is determined to continue the community tradition.

“I’m always looking to the future, and I have my dollar sign in mind for what we can do,” he said. “We want to keep this a free event.

We’re 100% free to attend, and people are watching our fireworks from a mile out in all directions. That’s why our show is different.

I have to make sure I have shells that can get that height, so people can see it from anywhere.”

This year ’s show will feature red, white and blue fireworks in tribute to the country’s 250th birthday, and Schatz said it will run about 25 to 30 minutes.

“There are not a lot of breaks in the show,” he said, noting that the majority of fireworks are set off electronically. “You’re going to see very few gaps where there’s nothing in the sky.

That’s rare, and that’s hard to do.”

Marietta Fireworks has grown increasingly popular over the past few years, Schatz said.

“It’s always very well-attended,” he said, encouraging people to arrive early.

“I never want to say that we’re the best show, and I never want to say we’re the longest show, but it’s a pure community and family event, with a fantastic fireworks display to boot.”

The books include information on livestock and competitive exhibits, as well as children’s and adult contests. Some of these entries have early deadlines. Entry information is also available at www.etownfair.com.

This year ’s premium book cover artwork was painted by local artist Nancy Landis. The cover features images of an antique bell painted by Landis in honor of the fair and the 250th anniversary of the United States. The bell, which is mounted on a rotating stand, features a night scene of the fairgrounds on one side and an eagle on the other.

Both sides incorporate acrylic paints with gold leaf. The bell will be sold at the Elizabethtown Fair Auction.

play with the competitive exhibits in the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St., during the fair.

The 53rd annual fair will run from Monday to Saturday, Aug. 24 to 29.

Area FFA and 4-H members and others will show their dairy and beef cattle, sheep, swine, goats, and rabbits during competitive judging held through the week. Residents of all ages are encouraged to enter their crafts, needlework, baked goods, produce and plants in the competitive exhibits judging , held annually at the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, located adjacent to the fairgrounds. Football and Cheerleading League Posted The United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDSF) has opened registration for the Challenger Football and Cheerleading League for the 2026-27 school year.

The league offers opportunities for people ages 8 to 21 with disabilities in L ancaster and surrounding cities to exercise while having fun. Along with teaching football and cheerleading fundamentals, the league gives players the opportunity to participate in a group activity where they can learn skills, interact socially with other individuals, and make new friends.

The program is also looking for volunteers to

Games will take place every Saturday from Aug. 1 to Oct. 10. Volunteers over age 18 must complete a criminal background check and child abuse clearance.

The Marietta Fourth of July Committee will host a Patriotic Paint-A-Plug event throughout the borough, featuring 10 fire hydrants transformed into patriotic works of art. Each hydrant has been painted by a local artist or community group, with each contr ibutor interpreting the theme of patriotism in his or her own creative way. Every hydrant is sponsored by a local business, individual, or organization, and all proceeds will benefit the Marietta Fourth of July Community Carnival Committee.

The baccalaureate services were held on May 17 in the Donegal High School auditorium.

Volunteers Make Wolf Sanctuary Howling Success

At the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania, staff members have a difficult time imagining a world without volunteers.

“I think (an absence of volunteers) would truly affect how we operate,” said Michelle Vandernewt, the education coordinator at Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania. “We started as a volunteer organization.

The volunteer program is our backbone. All of our tour guides are volunteers. They come here in all kinds of weather. Some have been here a long time.”

The task of maintaining and operating the wildlife refuge and caring for the wolves in their natural setting can be daunting, but it is one performed by 10 paid staff members and more than 50 dedicated volunteers. “ They are people who fell in love with wolves,”

said Vandernewt. “They’re people who genuinely care about wolves. They are people who like helping with wildlife. Our volunteers have such a passion for what they do.”

To express their appreciation for their contributions, officials at the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania recognize those efforts through posts on social media. The posts, which include photos and short narratives, are typically made on the anniversary of the volunteers’ start days, or “rescue dates.”

“We try to honor them publicly, and we tr y to e x p re s s o u r g rat i t u d e

when they’re here,” said Vandernewt.

Volunteers at the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania typically work five- to sixhour shifts. Many of the volunteers are local, but some drive as much as two hours to volunteer there.

On any given day, as many as 15 individuals are volunteering at the wolf sanctuary. The volunteers’ work is scheduled based on their availability.

“I really think it’s the wolves,” said Vandernewt.

“Volunteers visit before their interviews, and some fall in love with the wolves.

They can’t help but stick around.”

Among the duties performed by volunteers at the wolf sanctuary are tour guiding, animal care, cleaning and general operational duties.

The Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania hosts large fundraisers and offers guided and self-guided tours. When conditions are right, the wildlife refuge can host as many as 2,500 visitors per month.

“Our volunteers are great at interacting with the public,” said Vandernewt.

“They share their passion for wolves. Our tour program is a big fundraiser, and our volunteers really help run that.”

The Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania was founded

by Lititz residents Bill and Barbara Darlington in 1980. The facility was a private sanctuary before becoming a nonprofit in 1993.

As it has evolved over the years, the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania has added to its resident wolf population, hired more staff members and reinvented its methods for educating the public about wolves.

Good learned about the program from the Mount Joy Lions Club, a group that also participates with Trex.

“They have the plastic recycling bins located all over town at various stores and churches,” Good said.

“I spoke with a member who directed me to the Trex website, where I registered for our school to participate.”

Good explained that Trex

has changed the way the program operates going forward, but she’s glad the school had the chance to participate.

She recalled that the students were excited to take part in the project and even more thrilled when they reached their goal.

“We made a big announcement and had the bench in our main lobby for the kids to see,” she said. “Mr. Jahoda, our principal, was also very excited and put the bench together the day it was delivered to us.”

She also expressed gratitude to the people outside the school who helped make the project a success.

“The Donegal community is very supportive,” she said.

“We have amazing families who volunteer and dedicate many hours to helping the students and teachers throughout the school year.

The students, staff and community were very eager to collect the plastic.”

The historical site will celebrate the United States’ 250th birthday with an event on Thursday and Friday, July 2 and 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will feature live musicians; self-guided tours of the circa 1794 General Hand Mansion; living historians and sutlers, both military and civilian, throughout the grounds; the “Lancaster’s Revolutionaries” exhibit in the Snyder Gallery; open hearth cooking demonstrations; a children’s scavenger hunt, and period dance demonstrations. During his more than 38 years working in museums, Shahan has developed a passion for historical food and beverages. He mostly work s with 17th- and 18th-century recipes, and his specialty has become fundraising dinners featuring these foods and beverages.

Also, Nicholas P. Wood will present “Let the Oppressed Go Free: Abolitionism in Revolutionary America” on Sunday, July 5, at 2 p.m. in the Langmuir Education Room. In 1764, slavery was legal in every British colony and poised for expansion as Britain acquired new territories in the Americas and Africa. Yet within two decades - by the end of the Revolutionary War - six northern states had taken d e c i s i v e s te p s to w a rd abolition, with two more soon to follow. Wood will explore how the American Revolution reshaped public attitudes toward slavery by intersecting with the pre-existing Quaker antislavery movement along with black resistance.

Wood is an associate professor of history at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., and the author of “Let the Oppressed Go Free: Abolitionism in Colonial and Revolutionary America.”

He earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts at Rutgers University and his

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet on Thursday, July 9, at 7 p.m. at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area Visitor Center, 100 Museum Road, Stevens.

Will Krohn will present “How Citizen Science Can Help PA’s Purple Martins.”

The talk will discuss the life history of the purple martin, North America’s largest swallow, and some reasons for its population decline. Krohn will share about his research to help

conserve purple martins by studying how young mar tins move between the artificial colonies that they rely on for nesting.

This research is currently happening across Pennsylvania, and the talk will conclude with ways that attendees can contribute to the project and help protect purple martins.

Krohn has worked as an avian field technician and bird bander all around the easter n United States.

He is now conduc t ing

research on purple martins while pursuing a master’s degree in wildlife ecology in the Aeroecology Lab at the University of Delaware.

Supporting Empowering Lives Foundation (SELF) is holding a bingo fundraiser at the Millersville VFW Post 7294 on Sunday, June 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The post, located at 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville, will host the newly formed nonprofit’s first fundraising event.

SELF, formed last summer as the offshoot of another, now-defunct disabilities group, aims to help anyone with a disability live an independent life. According to the group’s website, its mission is “to serve clients with disabilities by identifying and addressing the gaps in support, resources and advocacy - picking the pieces so no one falls through the gaps.”

The event will consist of 10 normal bingo games, with the winner getting to pick a gift card prize. There will then be special games of bingo and a Chinese auction for some of the larger prizes, as well as a 50-50 drawing.

The prizes, all of which have been donated by local businesses and community members, include tickets to Hershey Gardens, the Reading Royals, Reading

“We are very excited,” s a i d Ja c k i N a g l e , t h e group’s chief executive officer. “We are very fortunate to have a community behind us ... we have the entire community coming together to support us.”

Nagle explained that while children with disabilities are in school, they

are entitled to ser vices through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. But as soon as they graduate from high school, many families lose access to needed resources, depending on income.

That’s where SELF steps in.

“Services are changing, and we need to make sure that people with disabilities don’t fall through the cracks,” Nagle said. “They still need to receive the support and services that

they’re eligible (for) and entitled to as humans.

“Disability is kind of a secondary thing to us,” she went on. “We just want to make sure that people with disabilities specifically are seen as integral parts of society.”

The group, physically located at 313 Liberty St., Suite 365, Lancaster, primarily serves those in Lancaster and Lebanon counties but will not turn down anybody who asks for help.

For the moment, SELF is offering services on a purely volunteer basis, although its staff has combined decades of experience. Its fundraiser at the Millersville VFW is the first step toward offering more services.

“We are very dedicated to doing this work,” said Deborah Chapman-Stumpf, SELF’s director of programming. “I personally have been devastated that we’re not able to do it as well as we can because we don’t have the money to really put into it yet.”

“I hope this is going to launch us into what we really need,” she said.

Native Plant Kit Sale Planned The Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program will offer its watershed-friendly native plant kit sale through Saturday, July 4, or until sold out.

Designed for both beginner and experienced gardeners, the kits offer native plants, which provide essential habitat for wildlife - including pollinators and fireflies - while helping to improve soil health, reduce runoff, and protect local waterways.

Customers will also receive optional planting designs for each of the kit themes.

The plants in the kits are intended for fall planting.

This year’s options will include the America250 Kit, inspired by the colors red, white, and blue. It features Canada anemone, bee balm, Culver’s root, blue vervain, and little bluestem for long-season color and pollinator appeal.

The Curbside Appeal Kit is ideal for tough, compacted soils like roadside strips and parking areas.

It includes nodding onion, butterfly milkweed, blazing star, wild petunia, and prairie dropseed.

T h e To u g h - a s - N a i l s (Drought-Tolerant) Kit is built for resilience in hotter, drier conditions.

It features wild bergamot, hairy beardtongue, spiderwort, big bluestem, and purple love grass.

Also available is the Firefly-Friendly Kit, which supports the full life cycle of fireflies. It consists of wrinkle-leaf goldenrod, purple-stemmed aster, New York ironweed, silver sedge, and tufted hair grass.

Two size options are available: one offering five plants of each of five species, for a total of 25 plants, and a lower-priced kit offering a total of five

plants - one of each species.

Single-species kits are also available for select plants, giving gardeners the flexibility to expand existing plantings or focus on favorites; two sizes are available: 25 plants or five plants.

All plants are grown as plugs by Kind Earth Growers using locally collected, open-pollinated seed and a 50% peat-free growing medium. Although smaller than typical nursery plants, these plugs may quickly establish due to their strong root systems that grow in the warm fall soils, while the above-ground growth is limited in the cool air.

All kits are grown to order. In the rare case that a species does not germinate successfully, a comparable native substitute may be provided to ensure quality.

In the southcentral part of the state, plants will be available for pickup in

Berks, Chester, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties in early fall. All orders must be placed in advance; plants will not be available for purchase at pickup sites.

Guardian Barriers will provide two stages for entertainment. From 6 to 6:45 p.m., Phredd will perform, followed by local band the Kracker Beez, who will entertain from 7 to 9 p.m. Phredd, a local children’s music artist, is known for his interactive and upbeat shows featuring his one-man band. The Kracker Beez is a threepiece band that plays classic party rock ‘n’ roll. A DJ will play music leading up to the event’s finale, the first-ever drone show in Mount Joy. It will begin at 9:30 p.m.

“The drone show is provided by Open Sky,” said committee member Allory Melhorn, who noted that t h e a l m o s t- 1 5 - m i n u t e show has been designed to highlight Mount Joy and its histor y. Drones will form images in the sky in the shape of the “Mountjoy ” merchant ship for which the town is named, along with

stars and other patriotic designs.

“We wanted to try something new,” said committee chair Dave Eichler. “ We didn’t want to compete with our neighbors who do some great fireworks shows.”

Children’s activities at the event will include Lancaster Mini Golf, Razzle Dazzle Balloons, a bounce house and a booth with the Milanof-Schock Library.

Food trucks will include Noel’s Café, Piper Belles BBQ, Reist Popcorn, Rita’s Italian Ice, the Rotary Fry Wagon, Spud Muffin and The TacoRv. Numerous civic organizations will participate in Stars, Stripes & Joy, including the American Legion Post 185, the Donegal Fish & Conservation Association, ECHOS, Friends of Donegal, Kiwanis Club of Elizabethtown-Donegal, the Mount Joy Chamber, the Mount Joy Lions Club, the Mount Joy Ministerium, RAISE28, VFW Post 5752 and Voyage Mount Joy.

S e ve ra l p a r t i c i p a n t s will provide information about Mount Joy’s history, including the Mount Joy Area Historical Society, which has created informational boards and will display relics from the town.

Fire Department Mount Joy will have apparatus on-site, and children will be invited to explore a fire truck.

“This is going to be a fun time for everyone to celebrate our country and Mount Joy’s 175th birthday,” said committee member Linda Eberly. “There’s something for people of all ages.”

Stars, Stripes & Joy is a chance to celebrate the Mount Joy community, reflect on the town’s history and express national patriotism ahead of the July 4 holiday.

“Come out for a great time with food, fun, games and an awesome drone show,” said Brandt.

Event to Focus on Revolutionary War The Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will commemorate its role as a Revolutionary War military hospital during a celebration on Saturday, June 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will also commemorate the United States’ 250th anniversary.

The Historic Ephrata Cloister was the site of a Revolutionary War military hospital from December 1777 to June 1778. The

hospital accommodated 260 soldiers, 60 of whom died and are buried on the grounds of the historic site. During this commemorative event, visitors may learn more about the military hospital and its impact on the pacifist members of the Ephrata Cloister.

Visitors may learn about 18th-centur y medicine, printing, camp life, and being a pacifist during wartime. They may visit the Witness Tree on the

HOP Program to Focus on Appreciation Healing Our Planet (HOP) will offer a program on Friday, June 26, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster. Attendees should use the entrance on Concord Street.

The tour will focus on the impact of the military hospital on the pacifist community. “ The Life of a Sister” will be held in the 1743 Sisters’ House, also called the Saron. Attendees will learn about the lifestyle of a solitary Sister and how the Sisters aided the soldiers through herbal medicines and remedies. A wristband is required.

The event will take place rain or shine. On-site parking is available on a firstcome, first-served basis.

A new resource called the Lancaster County Food Exchange is available to help food banks, pantries, and community organizations share resources, reduce waste, and get food to families in need. The organization’s purpose is to “make sure no good food goes unused and no family goes hungry.”

Terry Kile had the idea for the food exchange when The Loft Community Partnership in Millersville received an overage of 4,800 clamshells of blueberries.

Kile, a local tech entrepreneur, created the Lancaster County Food Exchange mobile web application using coding and some artificial intelligence. Incorporated as Food Exchange Resources in June 2025 and certified as a 501(c)(3) organization by the Internal Revenue Service, the Lancaster County Food Exchange was beta-tested by several food pantry directors and employees prior to its launch on Jan. 15.

The Lancaster County Food Exchange aims to help stretch limited resources further and strengthen collaboration among food assistance providers countywide.

The mobile app allows registered food pantry volunteers to list surplus inventory directly from a smartphone, request needed items from partner organizations across Lancaster County, coordinate pickups and deliveries, and view real-time shared inventory for better planning and distribution. Needs may include food and personal care products. As of May 5, the Lancaster County Food Exchange served 32 local agencies and more than 80 volunteers.

Future plans include expanding partnerships with growers, manufacturers, and distributors; integrating additional features for reporting and logistics; and onboarding more community groups that serve local families.

Initial support organizations included Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Midwest Food Bank, and Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County (CAP of Lancaster County).

Food Exchange Resources is presently served by a board of directors, including Dana D. Myers, director of charitable giving for Brittany’s Hope; Amanda Frankeny, director of food

justice at CAP of Lancaster County; Sandra Valdez, chief human services officer with the Spanish American Civic Organization (SACA); Willeta Calvin, community school director at Bright Side Opportunities Center; and Janice Reinke, manager of food procurement and distribution at Midwest Food Bank. Additional support has been provided by Jenna Graeff, executive director of The Loft Community Partnership; Cindi Pasi, senior retail donation manager with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank; and Paige McFarling, executive director at Lancaster County Food Hub. Financial support from three local organizations, including the Lancaster County Community Foundation, allows the food exchange to be offered free of charge to all volunteers.

Landis Valley Sets America250 Events L andis Valley Village & Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, has announced its 2026 schedule of public events and programs, developed as part of America250, the national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.

Throughout 2026, Landis Valley will present a series of festivals, public lectures, and living-history programs, along with a major new exhibition. The site’s America250 programming will emphasize material culture, agriculture, military service, and civic traditions as essential lenses for understanding the nation’s founding and legacy.

At the center of the 2026 programming is the new exhibition “Lancaster Gunsmiths of the Early Republic,” slated to open in August and run through 2028. The exhibition will examine Lancaster County’s nationally significant gunsmithing tradition during the Revolutionary and Early National periods. The exhibition will

explore craftsmanship, technology, and material culture and their connections to military service, frontier life, and early American industry. The exhibition will be supported by a schedule of lectures and public programs throughout 2026 and beyond.

Landis Valley will host monthly evening lectures by historians, scholars, and public history professionals. The series will explore themes related to the American Revolution, early industry, craftsmanship, military history, and civic life.

In addition, Landis Valley’s signature events will place America250 themes within immersive, living-history settings.

Fourth of July at Landis Valley, on Saturday, July 4, will be a special holiday program featuring the public reading of the Declaration of Independence and interpretive programming.

America 250: 1860s Day on Saturday, July 18, will be a living-history program focused on daily life during

the 1860s, serving as a variation on traditional Civil War Days. Demonstrations will emphasize civilian life and culture, including 1860s baseball re-enactors and period demonstrations.

America250: Militar y Days will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 8 and 9. An expanded version of Civil War Days, it will honor generations of military service, with re-enactors representing the Revolutionary War through World War I. Demonstrations and interpretive talks will also be included.

In addition to major events, Landis Valley will offer hands-on workshops, traditional craft classes, homeschool programs, seasonal camps, and youth education initiatives throughout the year. These programs are intended to support the museum’s mission by connecting visitors of all ages with early American skills, trades, and traditions.
