Nominations Sought For Donegal Monument BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Artisans will showcase their talents at the Makerfest.
Throughout the years, many people have contributed to make the Donegal School District area a great place to work and live. With that in mind, the Donegal Memorial Monument Committee (DMMC) was formed to recognize members of the community who have made an impact. The committee is seeking nominations for leaders to be included on the monument, located at the football stadium at Donegal High School, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. The idea for the monument came up during the capital campaign to create a new football stadium in 2015, said Scott Madara, a member of the Donegal Athletic Club and a DMMC member. “We decided that on a yearly basis, the committee would accept nominations for people who have given

After nominations are submitted to the DMMC, the committee reviews the information and passes along the names of potential honorees to the Donegal School Board, which has the final say in determining whose names will be included on a plaque on the memorial. Five plaques are currently installed on the monument, dating back to 2017. Among the first year’s honorees were Clarence Schock and Anne Milanof, for whom the Mount Joy public library is named. A plaque in the center of the display recognizes the people and organizations who helped fund the creation of the monument. Madara noted that although the monument is called a “memorial,” honorees do not need to be deceased to be nominated. Many of the people currently named on the monument are still active members of the Donegal community, he stated. He encourages anyone who has a person in mind to submit a nomination for inclusion on the monument. “This monument is a way to recognize people who have dedicated themselves to service,” Madara said. “It’s a way to honor them and what they’ve done for others in the community or the school district.” Nominations are due by Wednesday, Aug. 31, and they will be reviewed by the DMMC during the month of September before they are presented to the Donegal School Board. Thirteen students from across Pennsylvania and Maryland were recently awarded scholarships from the Merit Shop Training and Research Center (MSTRC). The $24,500 in scholarships for the 2022-23 academic year brings the total to $574,850 that has been awarded by MSTRC since its inception, helping students entering a career path in the construction industry. This year’s recipients include Tristan Stark of Marietta, $3,000; Luke Redkay of Mount Joy, $2,500; Hunter Gehman of Mount Joy, $2,000; Carson Sands of Lititz, $2,000; Matthew Sharp of Elizabethtown, $2,000; Joel Bitler of Lancaster, $1,500; and Zach Jerchau of Lititz, $1,500. The purpose of the Merit Shop Construction Scholarship Program, sponsored by ABC Keystone and administered by the MSTRC, is to assist individuals seeking to further their education in careers in construction. To be eligible, applicants must either be a permanent resident in the chapter’s service area or be applying to or attending a chapter service area trade school, college or university program that is directly related to a construction career. Programs include skilled trades, engineering, architecture and construction management. Students are evaluated on recommendations, academic achievement, initiative, a written essay and community and extracurricular activities.

Introduction to Tai Chi will be held from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. A simple 10-step Taiji form will introduce students to the basic postures appearing in many tai chi forms. Attention will be given to relaxation, basic alignment and how to move safely. The class is geared to those who are new to tai chi or have not practiced in years. Advanced Tai Chi (Forms, Weapons and San Shou) will be held from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. After learning the 10step form in the introductory class, participants will integrate the postures with new moves. Sword and other weapon forms will be gradually introduced and integrated with additional hand forms. Making Budgets Work will be presented by M & T Bank to adults age 18 and older on Wednesday, July 13, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. Topics will be identifying personal obstacles to budgeting; creating a structure to track and analyze spending; shortterm, medium-term, and long-term goals; the importance of reducing debt and building emergency savings; and strategies to manage day-to-day spending. The class is free, but preregistration is required. All-Comers Track Meets will be held on Thursdays, June 23 and July 7 and 28. The meets are open to everyone and will take place at 6 p.m. at the track at EAHS. People of all skill levels are welcome. The meets are non-sanctioned and non-qualifying.

Season Ends With Semifinal Loss For Donegal BY ARA GRIGORIAN
Baseball is the kind of game that lends itself to a plethora of sports axioms. One could often use the “It’s a game of inches” cliché when a batter tomahawks a pitch along the right field foul line, and it lands inches inside the line for a bases-clearing extra-base hit. It is also a game of inches when an attempted tag is not in time when a base runner swipes a bag. Baseball is also a sport that embodies the saying, “On any given day.” Going back to May 31, in the District Three Class 5A semifinals Ephrata topped Donegal 11-1, forcing the Indians to eventually enter the PIAA 5A state playoffs as the fourth-seeded team from District Three. On Thursday, June 9, however, Donegal eclipsed the Ephrata Mountaineers 5-4 in a quarterfinals game at Red Lion High School. Allman’s battery mates starter Nick Eichelberger and reliever Andrew Small - managed to hold Ephrata off while the offense took advantage of fielding errors. “We knew Ephrata would make a run, but we held it together,” Donegal head coach Jeff Hartman said. “Nick Eichelberger gutted out six innings and A.J. Small closed it out. “ We took advantage of some early miscues by Ephrata and had some timely hitting to take an early lead,” continued the coach. The Indians, who improved to 18-9 with the win, charged ahead to a 5-0 lead after three innings. The Mountaineers plated four runs in the fourth inning, but Eichelberger (4 strikeouts, 4 walks) was able to escape without giving up the equalizer. Eichelberger also delivered at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Jonathan Holmes had an RBI double on the day. Allman, batting ninth, walked twice and scored a run while leadoff man Landen Baughman went 1-for-3 with a run.
“The Ephrata game was an ‘instant classic,’” Hartman said. “There were tons of big plays and drama - great game to be part of and a great day for Donegal baseball. I’m very proud of our boys.” The Indians reached the quarterfinals with an 11-7 defeat of Southern Lehigh back on Monday, June 6 - a game where Holmes picked up the victory. “The entire lineup contributed,” Hartman said. “Johnny Holmes with his pitching and hitting.” Holmes not only picked up the win, but he also went 3for-4 with a double and a solo home run. Landon Sexton had two hits, including a triple and drove in five. Colin Eckinger went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. The victory over Ephrata moved Donegal into the state semifinals - a late afternoon game against Bethel Park at Mount Aloysius College on Monday, June 13. The Black Hawks, the 2021 defending state champions, jumped out to a 5-0 lead through three innings. The Indians battled back and
evened the score, including strong middle relief, a solo home run by Small plus a double and two RBIs by Allman. The game went into the final frame tied 5-5. The Hawks’ three-run seventh inning gave the defending champs an 8-5 victory, ending the season for Donegal. The final score did not change Hartman’s opinion of the squad, however. “Very rewarding season proud of the entire team,” he said. “This team set the bar, so I know 2023 team will go to work in the off-season and have specific goals.” Junior Landon Robertson had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run. Eichelberger went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Small, Eichelberger, and Colin Eckinger are three seniors, who helped set the high standard for the program. “They helped lead us all the way into the post season,” Hartman said. “They did it with their play and leadership. “ What a run!” Hartman added. “We proved that we belonged and nearly pulled it off.”

Donegal Graduates Embrace Change BY CATHY MOLITORIS Donegal High School (DHS) celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2022 on June 2. Student speakers shared advice with their classmates, and students were recognized for their achievements throughout high school. Class president Ryan Bedi was the first in a series of students to address the audience. “For this small moment in time, we are all gathered here to end one journey and start a new one,” he said. “Each of the little moments through school helped define who each of us is sitting here today.” He then led the class on an imaginary bus ride through the past 12 years

We are also prepared to catalyze change ourselves.” Diavionne Musser was recognized as salutatorian. She plans to attend Temple University to study genetic counseling. Elizabethtown Borough, Lititz Borough, Manheim Township, New Holland/Earl Township, Strasburg Borough, and West Lampeter Township. Other areas of Lancaster County are covered by Troop J, located at 2099 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The program is funded by The Pilot Club and Camp Cadet of Lancaster County. Osborne noted that people with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, autism, Down syndrome, or traumantic brain injury are good candidates for this life-saving technology. Noting that many of these individuals are cared for at home, she said, “Because of their conditions, it is imperative that (these individuals) are found quickly. This program is like an additional safety net.” Families of Project Lifesaver participants complete an interview process and sign a contract saying they will abide by obligations, such as testing the bracelet battery daily. There is a cost to cover equipment, but Osborne noted that scholarships are available. “ We don’t want to turn anyone away because of finances,” said Osborne. The Perennial Plant Association (PPA) announced that Monday, Aug. 1, will be Perennial Plant Education Day. The event, part of the PPA’s 2022 National Symposium, will be held at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square in Lancaster, and education will be centered on the theme “Native Friendly Gardening and Supporting Pollinators.” Participants will attend lectures by five speakers on unique topics regarding perennials. The lectures will feature “Plants for Pollinators: The Ecological Value of
Saturdays, July 2 and 9. Departure times will be available at 10, 10:30, and 11:30 a.m. and noon each day. The tours will allow the public to see this rare butterfly and its associated grassland habitat on military training ranges, as well as the many other natural wonders on the 17,000-acre military installation. Staff will also highlight a variety of animals and plants found at Fort Indiantown Gap and how the military presence on the installation is vital to the persistence of these species and their ecosystems. Attendees will be required to caravan from the meeting location to the tour location in their personal vehicles. Tours will last approximately one hour plus driving time. Meeting location and parking information will be provided after obtaining a permit. Visitors of all ages and abilities are welcome to attend. Tours will be on foot on gravel roads and mowed paths. Wandering off the path, into the fields, or away from the tour guide is prohibited. Attendees should bring drinking water and wear appropriate clothing and footwear for uneven terrain. There will be little or no shade on the tour route. Reservations are required, and attendance is limited. All attendees, including children, must register online at www.ftig.isportsman.net/ButterflyTours.aspx to obtain a free permit.
