f you participate in the Summer Reading Program at the Milanof-Schock Library, be prepared for adventure. This year’s program, which runs through Saturday, Aug. 15, features the theme “Unearth a Story,” and the library will host a plethora of activities for people of all ages. “We’re doing a dinosaur escape room, so that’s going to be really fun,” said Katelyn Schwab, who coordinates Summer Reading with Alyssa Mackey and Laura Bear. “It’s going to be on a Friday when the library is completely closed, so we’ll have access to the entire library. People will go on a scavenger hunt to find dino eggs.” At a dinosaur story time, kids can sing songs and listen to dinosaur books being read aloud before cracking open their own dinosaur eggs and taking home a new “pet.” Many of the programs also combine science or other disciplines with reading. “Our Storybook Science will be based off of different fairy tales,” Mackey said. “The first one will be based on ‘Princess and the Pea,’ and they’ll test different materials to see if they

Connor Wasko likes to stand out from the crowd. He was the only member of Scouting America Cub Scout Pack 150 to earn the Arrow of Light rank, and he reached a significant milestone in his Scouting journey when he crossed over to Boy Scouts and joined Troop 53 in late March. Connor, a fifth-grader at Donegal Intermediate School,
is the son of Eugene and Amy Wasko of Mount Joy. He joined Scouts in 2020 as a Lion and has advanced steadily through each rank in the program. “I am ver y proud of Connor’s perseverance and his continued commitment to Scouting,” said cubmaster Frank Splain III, who noted that Connor had to complete six required adventures to earn the Arrow of Light rank.

Riverfest Will Ignite History BY CATHY MOLITORIS
In June of 1863, outnumbered Union troops and local volunteers in Columbia set the wooden covered bridge spanning the Susquehanna River ablaze to prevent Confederate troops from advancing east into Lancaster County. The action forced the Confederates to retreat west, and two days later, the troops met Union forces at Gettysburg. For the first time since the 150th anniversary of the Civil War in 2013, all 26 bridge piers that remain from that bridge will be illuminated as the grand finale of Riverfest 2026. In prior years, Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) was able to light three piers at a time for Riverfest, but thanks to a sponsorship from the Louise Steinman von Hess Foundation, all of the piers will light up on Sunday, June 28, beginning at 7:45 p.m. “In early 2025, we had begun to plan for this historic year and hoped to find the support to create this breathtaking experience of lighting all the bridge piers,” said Sophia Vayansky, program manager for SNHA. “It’s no easy task to prepare all the piers, load the wood and light them simultaneously. We are deeply grateful to the Louise Steinman von Hess Foundation for their extraordinary generosity and vision. Their support allows us to honor this pivotal moment in American history at the scale it deserves.” To encourage close-up viewing of the piers, Veterans Memorial Bridge between Columbia and Wrightsville will be closed to
