Garden Tour

Will Showcase Blooms and Backyards

From water features to window boxes overflowing with blooms, the Marietta Garden Tour will highlight creativity among the foliage found in seven homes. The tour will be held rain or shine on Sunday, June 22, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The stops on the route are all within walking distance along Front Street and throughout Marietta.

“We have some really great things to see and some unusual things,” said Karen Sullivan, tour chairperson. “We have a house that has a historic railroad track going right through the front yard.”

That home, on Front Street, features dogwood trees, lots of shade-loving plants and a large magnolia tree.

As Sullivan explained, the railroad tracks date back to the

1800s, when coal was delivered to the front door of a supply station then located where the home is now. When Front Street was paved, a portion of the track was removed, but some of the track was left in the home’s front yard.

“This is some of the history you’ll see in Marietta,” Sullivan said. “We have some very old homes, and there’s lots of history.”

At the home of Glen and Judith Mazis-Kennedy, tourgoers can

Welcome Summer With a Community Celebration

How will you celebrate the longest day of the year? Head to Mount Joy for an event that will feature community and fun for people of all ages.

Summer Solstice will be held on Saturday, June 21, from noon to 5 p.m. along Main Street in Mount Joy. The festivities will be set up between South Market Street and Marietta Avenue.

“The Summer Solstice event is a welcoming space for the

community to come together and have fun,” said Collette Wagman, owner of Moon Raven Alley, who is organizing the event. “It’s a family-friendly, festival-style event that celebrates arts, culture, music and local talent.”

Wagman, who has a full committee of community members helping her with the event, said the festival promises to be a jam-packed afternoon.

“We’ll have a variety of vendors, live entertainment,

Books will be available for children, teens and adults in a wide variety of genres. “We have a super strong history section and also biographies and autobiographies as well as science fiction,” shared Diane Rice, who will co-chair the sale with Lora Jones. “Last year at the sale, we had several people comment on the quality of our science fiction section, and I actually think we equaled it this year.”

Music and other audio CDs, DVDs and videos will also be for sale.

“We have a lot of art books, too,” Rice said. “We have a lot of collections that came in on all kinds of artists. We have a very big specially priced area, too.”

While coming early to the sale ensures the best selection, there are plenty of books for people who visit on the weekend.

“If you wait until Saturday, maybe your first pick is not there anymore, but you can get a great deal,” Rice commented.

People can also enjoy a variety of inexpensive food for purchase, including sandwiches, soft pretzels and baked goods made by members of the Friends group.

Preparing for the annual book sale is a year-round event for the group. The members collect

book donations in a shed located behind the library at 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, any time the library is open (although collection is paused in the days leading up to the sale).

The sale would not happen without the support of many people, Rice said.

“We want to thank the community for their support with our sale, and we want to thank Donegal High School, especially the custodial staff and the office staff, because they help us so much. The library board itself has really stepped up, too, with board members doing things like preparing the food and helping with moving the books from here to the school. Last year, it was done so well. Donegal Performing Arts students helped us, and we had it done in record time.”

Proceeds from the book sale will go toward operational and programming expenses at the library.

The Milanof-Schock Library will host a variety of programs this summer, including the Summer Reading Program, which kicked off on June 7. With a theme of “Color My World,” the Summer Reading Program offers opportunities for hands-on learning and fun for kids of all ages. To learn more, visit https://mslibrary.org.

LCBC Church To Hold Annual Car Show

LCBC Church will host its 24th annual Motorsports Show on Saturday, June 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its Manheim location, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim. The event will feature food and prize giveaways, and there will be more than 1,000 antique vehicles, classic cars, muscle cars, tuners, street rods, motorcycles, and scale-model cars.

This year’s show will celebrate Jeeps, with a designated parking area featuring a variety of all Jeep models from 1980 and older, including

modified vehicles.

The Life Lion helicopter will do a flyover and land on-site. Attendees may interact with the Life Lion crew and watch the helicopter take off at the end of the show.

Local food vendors will be available, including Two Brothers BBQ, Dog House Grill, Stacy’s Orangeade, Fuego Latino, Sittin’ Pickin’ Chickin’, Philly Pretzel, Savory’s Funnel Cakes, Buckwalter’s Smoke Haus, Bricker’s Famous French Fries, Travelin Tom’s Coffee, See LCBC pg 3

a children’s parade, activities for kids and plenty for adults to enjoy too,” she shared. “It’s all about bringing people together, building community and kicking off the summer in a joyful, meaningful way.” People who attend are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to support the local food bank. People who bring items will earn tickets to win various prizes donated by local businesses.

Kids are encouraged to dress in whimsical costumes and join the children’s parade, which will start at 3 p.m. in the kids’ area, located in front of the borough office. Adults are encouraged to dress in costume as well.

Entertainment, which will be set up near the clock tower, will include a mermaid, stilt walkers, a magician, bagpipes and hoop dancers. Maggie Bird will be on-site from noon to 1 p.m. Vendors will sell items like jewelry, candles, stained glass, artwork, plants, video games, hair tinsel, metal art and handmade Belgian chocolates.

Joining Wagman in planning the event are Jennifer Drake of The Hopeful Ladybug, Rod and Lisa Wilbert of Time After Time Clocks and Ladybug Crossing, Jen Angeles of 2FAB Fitness Studio, Dave Schell of Schell’s Woodworking and Maria Roshon of Fractured Frog, along with Cynthia Clark, Nicole Harney, Michelle Hall, Ashley Schwebel and Heather Paltan.

This will be the first time an event like this is held in Mount Joy, but it will mirror other festivals in the area.

“The idea came about by a similar event in York that ended, and one of the vendors came into the shop and asked if Moon Raven Alley would consider doing something similar in Mount Joy,” Wagman said. “Hosting an event like this is all about community and connection. The summer solstice marks the longest day of the year - it’s a celebration of light, growth and new energy. What better way to honor that than by bringing people together for a fun, uplifting day that reminds us we’re part of something bigger?”

just a festival; it’s about creating a space where people of all ages can come out, feel connected and celebrate the season and each other. Whether you’re coming for the music, the vendors, the kids’ activities, or just the vibe, it’s about being part of something joyful and local.”

She encourages people to check out the festival, whether they are interested in the vendors, the entertainment or anything else.

“Whether you’re coming to shop, watch a show, enjoy the kids’ activities or just soak in the vibe, there’s something for everyone,” she said. “It’s a perfect chance to spend time with family, friends and neighbors while celebrating the start of summer together.”

Above all, she emphasized that the festival will provide more than just entertainment.

“The summer solstice has always been a time to pause, gather and celebrate light, life and connection,” she explained. “Hosting a community event around it is a way to honor those themes - especially together. It’s more than

Celebrate Summer and Support Mt. Hope

You’re invited to a Summer Backyard Barbecue Picnic and Groundbreaking Ceremony at Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community on Sunday, June 22, from 12:30 to 3 p.m. The outdoor event will take place rain or shine at 3026 Mt. Hope Home Road, Manheim, and will include a catered meal, yard games, live music, guest speakers and kids’ prizes. Seating will be available under a large tent, but attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. and will celebrate Mt. Hope’s 56th anniversary as well as the start of new independent living cottage construction. Donations will be accepted at the event, with all proceeds directly supporting the residents of Mt. Hope.

The catered meal will feature grilled pulled pork and chicken with barbecue sauces on soft rolls, baked macaroni and cheese, savory baked beans, creamy coleslaw and desserts.

Mt. Hope is home to 50 nursing care residents, who rely on the facility for skilled nursing and rehabilitation services, as well as those who reside in the current six independent living apartments. The addition of new cottages reflects

Mt. Hope’s commitment to seniors and individuals with disabilities, many living on limited incomes.

“Most of our residents do not have the financial resources or the broader supportive network to cover the cost of their care,” shared Kris Wilson, director of advancement. “Eighty percent of our residents do not have funds to pay for their nursing care. So the primary payment available to Mt. Hope is from Medicaid, the state assistance program. Medicaid payments simply do not cover the cost of the required care. This challenge is known as the gap or the difference between the private-pay cost of care and the amount we receive from Medicaid.”

There is an average gap of $200 a day per resident between what the state reimburses and the actual

cost of care, she said. “The Medicaid funding gap makes it increasingly difficult for Mt. Hope to absorb costs of benevolent care without searching for other alternatives to offset rising costs and continuing with creative fundraising initiatives,” she explained. “Mt. Hope has always aimed to be good stewards of its resources, managing them conservatively. This past year, Mt. Hope provided about $1.7 million in charitable nursing care.”

The Groundbreaking Ceremony will also highlight the recent sale of the Mt. Hope farmhouse, which supplies crucial funding support. “The sale of the Mt. Hope farmhouse property gives Mt. Hope the boost needed to meet our new cottage fundraising goal and begin the initial construction

Picnic

phase,” Wilson remarked. “Before the auction, we secured about half of the funds required for the new cottages’ total project goal. Building two new independent-living duplex cottages gives Mt. Hope an additional four first-floor, suitestyle apartments. These independent living cottages will increase Mt. Hope’s revenue, ultimately helping to support the nursing home’s mission.”

Wilson also reflected on the site’s historical legacy. “This dynamic project marks the beginning of the first expansion of Mt. Hope since Ephrata Grace Point Church purchased the facility over 19 years ago,”

she said. “In 1910, the Chiques congregation built the white frame Mt. Hope meetinghouse on Mt. Hope Home Road. Presently, this meetinghouse structure is recognizable at the east end of the main building of Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community.”

After Chiques built a modern facility, Mt. Hope was used for special events until its 1965 sale to the Dunkard Brethren Church. In 1969, it became a church home, later sold to Ephrata Grace Point Church in 2006.

Ephrata Grace Point Church envisioned a community-focused care facility where no one

goes unserved, offering nursing and rehabilitation services regardless of financial circumstances - a mission aligned with the legacy of the Dunkard Brethren Church Home.

The upcoming cottages are part of fulfilling that legacy.

“By adding more cottages to our campus, it helps secure Mt. Hope’s mission of serving our community right here in Manheim,” Wilson said. “Our goal is to

have the new cottages move-in ready by the first half of the new year 2026. This new construction will provide housing options for families and connect Mt. Hope to the local community like never before.”

She emphasized that when people attend events such as the summer picnic, their support of Mt. Hope is appreciated.

GEARS will offer activities to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person cost, with a discounted rate for residents. To register or for more information, visit www.getinto gears.org or call 717-367-0355.

A Zumba dance fitness class will be held on Wednesdays, July 16 to Aug. 27, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the gym at the GEARS Community

Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. The program is for people age 14 and up.

A trip to Cape May will be offered on Saturday, Aug. 9, departing from the parking lot of Elizabethtown Area High School, 600 E. High St., at 6:30 a.m. and returning around 10 p.m. Participants may explore the city, check out the Cape May Lighthouse, or

enjoy time on the beach.

Bowling Camp will be held for children ages 8 to 12 from Monday through Thursday, July 14 to 17, from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. at Clearview Lanes, 1990 W. Main St., Mount Joy. Lessons will include arm swing, a four-step approach, targeting, and spare making. Clearview Lanes staff members will instruct.

“Your contributions help us to continue to shine God’s light,” Wilson said. “We’re so grateful for generous gifts that bless Mt. Hope. Thank you for caring about our residents and their home.”

Preorders for the barbecue meal will be accepted through Sunday, June 15. Additional meals may be available the day of the event on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information or to reserve a meal, contact Wilson at 717-6828026 or email advancement@ mthopenazarene.org.
