Books For A Bargain BY CATHY MOLITORIS
eady to stock up on summer reading material? Look no further than the Friends of the Milanof-Schock Library book sale. The event will kick off with a preview night on Thursday, June 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. It will continue on Friday, June 18, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, June 19, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The book sale will be held in the gymnasium at Kraybill Mennonite School, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy. The entrance to the gym is at the rear of the building. “ We will have something for everyone,” said Lora Jones, co-chair of the book sale committee. More than 30 genres will be represented at the book sale, including fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, cookbooks, biography, romance, science fiction and more. “It’s a really friendly, well-organized sale, and everything is clearly marked by category, so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for,” Jones stated. “You never know what

you’re going to find. I’ve had many people come up to me over the years and say, ‘I was looking for this, and I can’t believe I found it here.’” Volunteers work year-round on Tuesday afternoons, sorting and packing books for the sale. Volunteer Joyce Hershey recalled that the book sale began in the late 1990s, when a group of library patrons wanted to form a Friends group. This is the second year the sale will be held at Kraybill Mennonite School. “We owe a lot of credit to Kraybill for letting us use their gym,” Jones remarked. “They have been very supportive of us and our book sale.” Along with books, food will be for sale, including hot dogs, barbecue and baked goods, as well as beverages. Admission to the event is free on Friday and Saturday, but Thursday’s sale has an admission charge. “You’ll get first pick if you come on Thursday, and you’ll be supporting the library with your admission fee,” Jones noted. When MJ Smith retires from her position as principal of Kraybill Mennonite School at the end of this month, she’ll be leaving behind a job that she’s loved, and one that she said has been an honor to have. “It has been really great to have been gifted with the privilege of serving here,” she said. “This school is a community that really supports the students and the teachers. It is a fantastic place. It’s not heaven, but it’s close.” See Kraybill pg 2

Comedy, carnival games and camaraderie will combine at Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) when the Mount Joy organization holds two free events as part of its Summer Challenge. The first event, scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22, will feature comedian Jeff Allen on Facebook Live. “We’re envisioning this as a setup sort of like ‘The Tonight Show,’ with friendly banter back and forth between the host and Jeff Allen,” explained Cristina Paden, REYS executive director, who will serve as the host of the virtual event.
