Students at Donegal Primary School (DPS) have been getting their hands dirtyliterally - and learning as they dig in the dirt.
As part of a project between kindergartners and their firstand second-grade buddies, the students recently planted flowers at the school, located at 1055 Koser Road, Mount Joy.

their students with kindergartners in Kim Garner’s morning and afternoon classes for hands-on activities and fun.
“We were brainstorming ideas for the spring and were reminiscing about our days together at Maytown Elementary and how we always planted flowers around the school and bulbs in the Nature Center,” Garner recalled, noting that the project was really a full-circle moment. “I had been Jenna’s kindergarten teacher, and Karen had been her second-grade teacher.”
The planting project not only beautified the school grounds. It also helped the students apply what they learned in class to a real-world situation.
“Students have learned about plants and livings things in our science curriculum,” said Gorski. “On this day, we taught
the children how to transplant the greenhouse-purchased marigold plants into the ground. The children first weeded the flower beds. Next, they planted the marigolds, mulched around their flower and finally watered their flower.”
The flowers now grace the space in front of the school and the district office.
“We planted almost 100
marigolds,” Miller remarked. “The children were careful and respectful of the flowers their peers had already planted as we took turns.”
All three teachers commented on the students’ behavior, noting that the project required active skills such as planting but also passive skills such as waiting.
“The children were cooperative and patient as they worked
Strawberry Festival Will Offer a Sweet Way to Give Back

Celebrate Dad a day early or bring your friends out for a sweet time when Saint Luke Episcopal Church hosts its annual Strawberry Festival. The event will be held at the church,
209 S. Market St., Mount Joy, on Saturday, June 14, from 4 to 7 p.m.
“This is a time to gather with family, friends and neighbors to enjoy a delicious, affordable meal together,” said senior warden Lynn McCleary. “Strawberry shortcake or other varied

When Thrive Community Church opens in Mount Joy, it will bring decades of history and a strong foundation in faith to its new home. The church, which began in Lancaster city and is currently renting space from Faith EC Church at 2124 Old Philadelphia Pike in Lancaster, is in the process of renovating space at 610 E. Main St. in Mount Joy with a full opening in mid to late fall.
Daryl Thomas, worship leader and head of outreach and evangelism, noted that the church initially formed under a different name.
“Formerly First Baptist Church of Lancaster, we changed our name to Thrive Community Church in 2023, nearly 150 years into our history,” he said. The new name more accurately reflects the church’s passion and mission - lifting up the community.
“We’ve felt a draw to the

together, yet each child was able to plant his or her own marigold,” Garner said. “They had to wait patiently for mulch once they let the teacher know the flower was ready. There were many opportunities to practice following directions. Many of the children loved discovering different creatures in the soil and holding and observing them.”
Garner noted that the project was possible because of the support of DPS’ new principal, John Jahoda. He obtained
permission to plant the flowers from the district’s director of maintenance
“The DPS PTO graciously donated the funds for us to purchase the marigolds,” Gorski said. “We were able to use quality gardening trowels that had been purchased many years ago from our Donegal Foundation through a teacher grant. And Donegal provided three bags of mulch for the children to be able to put the finishing touch on their flowers.”

munity church is reflected in the desire to love and support the community in which God places us, and we feel confident that community is Mount Joy.”
The church is hard at work preparing its new home to welcome worshipers.
“At this point, we have initiated several renovations, including exterior projects, both functional and aesthetic, and interior projects such as all new handicapped-accessible bathrooms; new kitchen for serving meals; new HVAC system; improved accessibility; several aesthetic improvements; and the expansion of the stage, audio, video and lighting

desserts will top off a delicious meal of either all-beef hot dogs or hamburger barbecue with chips and a drink.”
Along with food, door prizes and other fun festivities will be featured at the Strawberry Festival.
As McCleary explained, the event has a long history at the church.
“Lane Ellis, a beloved member who has since passed, was the impetus behind the Strawberry Festival in the early 2000s,” McCleary shared. “We carry on the tradition in honor of Lane and in appreciation of the community.”
Proceeds from the Strawberry Festival will support community outreach programs of the church.
“This is a fundraiser to help fund our community garden, which is harvested for the Mount Joy Food Bank,” McCleary explained. The garden has expanded this year to grow even more produce for Mount Joy Helping Services Food Bank, which provides food to more than 80 local households a month and serves more than
200 people monthly.
“Saint Luke is a small but extremely welcoming congregation, always looking for ways to connect with the community,” she stated. “One community offering, our Taize service of candlelight, lessons and chants, is held every first Saturday at 5 p.m. Members of all faiths gather to create a peaceful and contemplative atmosphere.”
Having the community garden on-site and hosting events like the Taize service and the Strawberry Festival provide opportunities for the members of the church to make an impact beyond the sanctuary, McCleary said.
“At Saint Luke Episcopal, we love drawing the community together for fellowship, food and fun,” she remarked.
“The Strawberry Festival is one more reminder that all are welcome at Christ’s table.”
Reservations for the Strawberry Festival are encouraged, but not required. To make a reservation, contact Gail at 717-538-0810. Walkins will also be welcome.

systems to support worship and create a warm and welcoming worship atmosphere,” said Frank Kautz, head of the church council.
Thrive Community Church is affiliated with American Baptist Churches of Pennsylvania and Delaware, the regional branch of American Baptist Churches USA.
In addition to Sunday worship services, the church offers a young adult Bible study that meets one Friday a month, an afterchurch study every Sunday, a youth group, weekly Bible studies for people of all ages, monthly gatherings for men and programs for women.
“We also have a ministry called Rooted Against Hunger through which we pack food boxes and distribute them in areas of the county that are considered food insecure,” Thomas stated.
Sunday school for people of all ages will be offered at the Mount Joy location, and Thomas noted that moving to the new site will only amplify the church’s initiatives. “We anticipate our ministries growing as we put our roots down and learn about the needs in the community,” he said.
Thomas and Kautz encourage people to check out Thrive Community Church, even if walking into a new place can some-
times be intimidating.
“At Thrive we’ve been very intentional about creating a space that is welcoming, warm and safe,” Thomas said. “We understand that there are introverts and there are extroverts. There are those who are comfortable in a church and those who are not. We know there are those who are seeking and those who are hurting. No matter who you are, if you walk into Thrive, you will feel welcome, but you will not feel overwhelmed, singled out or ignored.”
Kautz emphasized that all are invited to come to Thrive.
“Though we have nearly 150 years of history, our vision is fresh and new,” he said. “The vision to pull up our roots, discover who we are now and boldly join God in His work in the world today is exciting. The world needs love, and we are motivated to be a church of action, not just preaching the Gospel, but living it. We invite you to come as you are, grow in Christ and
discover how God is calling you to use your gifts to bring the love of Jesus to your family, your community and your world.”
As the church prepares to open its doors at the new site, Thomas reflected on the path that led the members where they are today.
“We have been preparing for this time for the last eight years,” he said. “Many hours of prayer and, together, seeking God’s guidance has led us from 612 N. Duke St. to 610 E. Main St. We believe God is doing a new thing, and we are excited about the ways in which we can love on the people of the community of Mount Joy.”
The Rev. Dr. Kevin Walden is the pastor of Thrive Community Church. Currently, worship services are held at 11:15 a.m. on Sundays at 2124 Old Philadelphia Pike. Worship times may change when the church opens in Mount Joy. For more information on the church, visit https://thrivecommunity church.org.

Bike Tour
on Thursday, June 12, at the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta.
The workshop is designed for community members who wish to participate in an event during Lancaster Water Week; people who love the outdoors, enjoy biking and want to learn more about the watersheds they live in; and anyone interested in riparian forest buffers, the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay watershed or contributing to conservation and restoration efforts in the watershed.
The workshop will cover the history of the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail and the Lower Susquehanna
River, riparian forest buffer programs and benefits, how to improve water quality in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, and how individuals can help make community watersheds more sustainable.
The Master Watershed Steward program, in partnership with the Lancaster Conservancy, offers the bike tour to highlight various watershed features, trail history and geological history on the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail.
The bike tour is an outand-back ride from the East Donegal Riverfront Park to the Fisherman’s Wharf Trail access at the northern terminus in Falmouth. The trail is 100% paved, and the total
distance is approximately 15 miles, including stops along the way and a water break.
The journey will run about 2.5 to 3 hours. Helmets are required, and any type of bike is permitted, including road, mountain or gravel. Participants should bring water.
Parking and restroom facilities will be available. Upon returning to the East Donegal Riverfront Park, attendees can enjoy some of Lancaster County’s finest snack items and reflect on the experience.
Waterways on Wheels is an educational program of the Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward program. It brings bike
riders to the intersection of history and the watershed in immersive natural environments via casual bike rides designed to be fun and educational.
Lancaster Water Week, which will run from Saturday, June 7, through Sunday, June 15, celebrates the 1,400 miles of streams and rivers in Lancaster County. During the week, individuals can explore, volunteer and take action to protect local waterways.
Participants can register for the bike tour through Tuesday, June 10, for a fee. More information is available at www.extension.psu .edu/waterways-on-wheels -a-bike-tour.
