The anticipated 225 members of the Donegal High School (DHS) Class of 2020 will officially observe commencement on Tuesday, June 2, at 6:30 p.m.

However, the celebration of the completion of the students’ compulsory education has already begun. Commencement preparation kicked off with a senior yard sign parade on the school’s campus on May 9. The

students decorated their cars and drove through the parade route as approximately 150 Donegal School District staff members cheered them on. “It was cool because teachers from other schools - intermediate and junior See Class Of 2020 pg 2

Commencement for the Donegal High School Class of 2020 will go in a different direction this year. Thanks to fathers Carey Kendig and Dave Chobanoff, with the support of Cross Roads Church youth pastor Phillip Allen, this year’s graduates will be celebrated with a parade through the Donegal School District. Carey’s son Corey and Dave’s daughter Jen are seniors, and Allen has 10 seniors in his youth group. Carey proposed the idea of a parade after hearing about similar events being discussed for other high schools. “I thought it would be a good way for communities to celebrate the seniors without all the people present,” Carey remarked. The Parade for Our Donegal Seniors has been set for Wednesday, June 3, from 5 to 8 p.m. Following

social distancing guidelines, the members of the Class of 2020 will meet at Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta, at 5 p.m. Class president Taylor Barton will address the assemblage at 5:30 p.m. Mount Joy Mayor Timothy Bradley Jr., Marietta Mayor Harold Kulman, and East Donegal Township supervisor Tom Jones are also slated to speak. The vehicles will set off on the parade route at 6 p.m. Carey said that the committee has been urging parents and guardians to drive so that their students are free to wave and fully engage with the celebratory atmosphere. Additionally, everyone participating in the parade is encouraged to decorate their vehicles, and all participants are asked to register at www.donegalclassof2020.com. Supporting Students With Backpacks And School Supplies Financial Donations Sought For Annual Distribution While a school year unlike any other is winding down and students are finishing their final remote assignments, the staff members at Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) in Mount Joy are beginning preparations for their August Backpacks and School Supplies Distribution. “For the last seven years, REYS has been honored to work with our community partners to provide backpacks and school supplies for local students in need. Each of the last three years, we have been able to provide over 600

filled backpacks,” shared REYS executive director Joel Hughes. Since the program’s inception, more than 3,000 backpacks total have been distributed. “One of our favorite experiences each year is seeing the children jump for joy as they leave the youth center with their new bag,” Hughes noted. “Every year, dozens and dozens of children and their parents respond with beautiful thank you notes and pictures sharing what an impact this gift has made for their families.” In talking with principals and school leadership teams in local districts, REYS staff members expect there to be a significant increase in need for this

According to Hughes, the cost for a backpack filled with school supplies can range from $40 to $50, depending on the grade level of the student, and REYS hopes to raise $10,000 for the project. There is no deadline to donate. People who would like to sponsor a backpack can make a donation at www.reys.org or call 717-6539511 to find out the mailing address. The mailing address is also posted on the website. Registration for families of students who need a backpack for the coming year is open and may be completed at www.reys.org. REYS’ goal is to host an inperson distribution in its building in August, as it has done in the past. As a Plan B, should it be needed, the REYS team is organizing a drive-through option, which would allow families to maintain necessary physical spacing while picking up the school supplies. “Often we are faced with the question of ‘how can we actually help with something in our own neighborhood?’” Hughes stated. “The provision of a simple backpack and school supplies is an incredible way for you to make a difference in the life of a child right here in your own community.”

Even if schools do not immediately reopen for in-person programming in the fall, Hughes noted, the need for school supplies may increase even more. “Many students get basic supplies from their actual classrooms, so providing these basics for at-home study could fill a critical gap,” he explained. “Backpacks would provide a personal storage space for these items for many students who share small living spaces with their families.” To meet these needs, REYS invites community members, churches, businesses, civic groups, and others to sponsor backpacks. Community support is crucial to the success of the initiative, Hughes noted. “We will need extra financial support this year, as some of our supporting groups from prior years have already shared with us that their giving capacity is being impacted by the current circumstances,” he explained. I wish we could’ve been together one last time,” Taylor commented. “It’s really cool how the whole community has been trying to make us feel better. Thank you to everyone who’s tried to make the end of our senior year memorable. We won’t remember it for what we missed, but we’ll remember it for everything the community tried to do for us.” “It’s really encouraging to see how many people are standing in solidarity with the seniors to be with us even though this land-

Riders, along with representatives of the Susquehanna Regional Police Department, the Mount Joy Borough Police Department, the fire departments of Maytown and Mount Joy, and the Pioneer Fire Company of Marietta. Seniors who are fire department members will ride on their respective apparatus. The route has been based on the one that was used a few years ago when the girls’ field hockey team won the state championship, Carey noted. A map and directions have been posted on the event website. “We tried to keep it as simple as we could,” Carey said. “We’re going down the main streets. We’ve been asked to go through different developments, but that wouldn’t work well.” With 225 candidates for graduation, the parade has the potential to be very long. Residents and businesses along the parade route are invited to decorate their properties to celebrate the seniors. The committee has been selling yard signs, which may be ordered at the event’s website. Maintaining social distance, individuals may also go outside to cheer on the students as they drive by. There is no rain date for the parade. “Unless it’s a monsoon, it’s going to happen that day,” Carey said. The response to the parade has been entirely positive. “It’s incredible. Every time I made a phone call, (the person would ask), ‘What can I do for you? What do you need?’” Carey said. “We didn’t have to fill out any paperwork. I couldn’t have asked for an easier process. Everyone’s been very supportive.” The idea for the parade came from other schools, and now Donegal’s event has set the model for its neighbors. “I’ve been getting calls from someone planning a parade for Elizabethtown,” Carey commented, adding that he has been happy to share what he has learned. A gift card giveaway event will take place on Saturday, May 30, at Calvary Bible Church, 629 Union School Road, Mount Joy, from noon to 4 p.m. Anyone living in the area is invited to receive a $5 gift card; people do not need to be Mount Joy residents to attend. The church’s desire for this initiative is twofold. First, the church aims to support small, local businesses that have been adversely affected by COVID-19. The focus is on locally owned and run Mount Joy businesses that either have closed or have been limited in their operations. One of the primary reasons organizers chose a $5 amount was to encourage people to spend some of their own money. For example, they might consider ordering an appetizer when they normally would refrain. Second, through small gifts to community members, church members hope to be a blessing to their neighbors. Agents Support Local Food Pantry During the COVID-19 pandemic, local State Farm agents are finding ways to engage in their neighborhoods and help each other with needs while respecting social distancing and local ordinances. Agents Joel Langdon and Greg Sallade of Mount Joy and Craig Rothstein of Elizabethtown recently pooled their resources to send support to the Mount Joy

Helping Services organization and its food pantry. They donated $1,500 so that the organization could continue to provide needed resources to the community and those in need. Mount Hope Plans Chicken Barbecue Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim will hold a drive-through takeout chicken barbecue on Friday, June 12, from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, June 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim. The per-meal cost is $12. Each meal will include a halfchicken, a baked potato, a roll and butter, and applesauce. Preorders will be taken and meals will be saved under the name provided when ordered. Attendees will be asked to specify pickup for June 12 or June 13. Prepayment will not be accepted; all payment must be made when picking up the meals. The public is invited. Proceeds will go toward Mount Hope’s Coronavirus Assistance Fund. Mount Hope is a 50-bed skilled nursing facility and rehabilitation center in rural Rapho Township that serves seniors regardless of their ability to pay. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mount Hope created a Coronavirus Assistance Fund to help cover the unanticipated increased costs of safely providing care for residents. These funds help with the purchasing of personal protective equipment, covering unforeseen expenses related to additional building and cleaning supplies, easing the financial shortfall from reduced giving trends, and providing for unexpected costs as staff is needed to fulfill roles once held by volunteers. Many in the community have partnered with Mount Hope. Churches in the Manheim area have sewn and provided gowns and face masks, provided monetary assistance, and delivered homemade meals and baked goods. The Manheim Ministerium recently donated $500 to the Coronavirus Assistance Fund. The ministerium, a network of area churches and faith-based nonprofits, has worked for more than 50 years

Organizations Receive Grants The Lancaster Cares COVID-19 Response Fund has already generated more than $966,000 that will directly support neighbors with immediate needs. Launched jointly by the Lancaster County Community Foundation and United Way of Lancaster County, the fund will work through organizations that can turn donated dollars directly into help and provide food, housing and emerging critical needs for Lancaster residents. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused the cancellation or postponement of many annual events and activities, including the annual Feed the Need food drive. Organized by the staff of HARTZ Physical Therapy and typically held in April of each year, the food drive has donated more than 16,000 pounds of food to Water Street Mission (WSM) over the past five years. Due to concerns of germ transmission, event organizers canceled the annual collection in 2020. However, in light of the increased need due to so many community members being out of work, organizers of the annual event strived to find another way. They have decided to go virtual with the event during the month of May, raising muchneeded funds for the community nonprofit. Event organizers have a goal to raise $4,000 for WSM during the month of May. Brian and Amy Hartz, owners of HARTZ Physical Therapy, will start the fundraising with a guaranteed donation of $1,000 and have agreed to match up to $1,500 of additional funds from community donations for the cause. CPFB Gets Grant The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) announced it received a $100,000 grant from the PNC Foundation to aid in its response to the COVID-19 crisis. The gift will be used to help meet the needs of food insecure residents of central Pennsylvania during the COVID-19 crisis. To feed children and their families, as well as all those facing hunger during this time, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is packing and distributing boxes of crisis response food. All crisis response boxes contain approximately 25 pounds of shelf-stable food as well as fresh milk, produce, and meat. To reduce barriers, the CPFB provides all crisis response food to its partners at no cost. The funding from the PNC Foundation will help underwrite the costs of procuring, packing, and distributing the crisis response food.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and PNC share a large footprint in central Pennsylvania. The food bank serves 27 counties, many of which overlap with PNC’s market, including Centre, Dauphin, Lancaster and York counties. Some of the work the food bank has been doing in these areas will be supported by the grant, including biweekly crisis response distributions across Harrisburg supported by the Harrisburg School District and the Harrisburg Police Department; weekly crisis response distributions by PowerPacks in Lancaster County, a partner of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank; continuation of BackPack programs while schools remain closed in York County; and distribution of grab-and-go meals and crisis response boxes to youth feeding sites across Centre County. Bailey Coach, based in Spring Grove, celebrated and recognized its volunteers for disinfecting 500 first responder vehicles since April 7. A small ceremony was held at Bailey Coach on May 5. As part of its mission to give back to the community, Bailey Coach dedicated one of its specialized electrostatic sprayers to be used on Mondays through Fridays from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. to disinfect first responder vehicles. The process to disinfect takes two to five minutes. The staff members who have been disinfecting the vehicles are volunteers from the Bailey Coach staff or their families. Bailey Coach plans to operate the free disinfecting to serve first responders in York, Adams and Lancaster counties as long as the disinfecting treatments are needed to keep the area’s first responders healthy due to the COVID19 pandemic. GAiN Announces Name Change

Forryâ€™s Country Store

Since 2005, Lancaster County residents have known Global Aid Network (GAiN) as more than a former fish hatchery. Over the decades, the 70,000-square-foot warehouse on Quarry Road in Mount Joy has become a place for volunteers to serve others as they prepare and pack humanitarian aid to go to people in more than 30 countries around the world. Recently GAiN in the United States, the humanitarian ministry of Cru, announced that the ministry changed its name to Unto. The name change came after two years of research, planning and prayer. This change will allow the ministry to more clearly convey its pursuit to serve people by relieving suffering, restoring dignity and revealing the eternal hope of Jesus. Unto will remain steadfast in its commitment to accelerate spiritual movements through humanitarian kindness, which helps Cru and its partners gain access, build credibility and increase
