Honoring the fallen

Youcan tell something is happening in Mount Joy over Memorial Day weekend when people start putting chairs out on the curb. “People put their chairs out the night before the Memorial Day parade,” said Denny Brandt, who is leading a group of volunteers who are organizing the parade. “People love to come out f or the parade.” Each year, the parade draws between 3,000 and 5,000 people, Brandt said.

This year’s parade will be held on Saturday, May 27, beginning at 2 p.m. The route will travel from

Angle Street down Main Street to Barbara Street. The theme of this year’s parade is “In memory of many, in honor of all.” The grand marshal will be George Leyh. He is a retired high school history teacher and member of the U.S. Army who served in Vietnam and Desert Storm, among other conflicts.

Denny noted that the Mount Joy Memorial Day parade is a big undertaking. “To my knowledge, it’s the biggest Memorial Day parade in the county,” he said. “We have 70 to 80 participants and nine or 10 bands. We will have Cylo, the Barnstormers’ mascot. We have local businesses, organizations and groups who are

participating.” Participating bands include Big Boy Brass, the Kracker Beez and the Donegal Alumni Band. The major sponsor of the parade is Houseal Plumbing. Banner sponsors are SM Johns & Son Construction, Sheetz Funeral Home, Hershey Heating & Air Conditioning, Whitmoyer, Denny Brandt - Berkshire Hathaway, Keystone Lawn Company and Hearing and Ear Care Center. The parade is supported locally by the Rotary Club of Mount Joy and the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce. Additional members of the parade committee are Chris Brandt, John Coleman, Josh Deering and Brenda Kready.

The Mount Joy Memorial Day parade dates back to the 1880s, when the first parade included a band, Civil War soldiers and boys and girls from a local orphan school.

Denny noted that programs will be available for the parade, and donations will be accepted to help fund future parades. He encourages everyone to come out for the parade, adding, “It’s a fun family time for the community.”

In the case of inclement weather, the parade will be canceled. A decision will be made by 10 a.m. on the day of the parade. For more information, follow “Mount Joy Memorial Day Parade” on Facebook.

Marking Memorial Day in Maytown

On Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, Maytown will honor and remember veterans with several events. Beginning at 12:30 p.m., a ceremony will be held in Maytown Square, with a prayer led by the Rev. Dr. Ronnette Comfort-Butler from Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ. Members of the Bainbridge Band will provide music, and wreaths will be placed on the veterans’ markers in the square. The names of Maytown veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice will be read. The grand marshal, Jeff Armold, and the Poppy Princess, Isabella Love, will be on hand for the square ceremony, which will end with the playing of taps. Armold served in the U.S. Air Force from 1972 to 1977. Isabella, the daughter of Dan and Janet Love, is a ninth-grader at Donegal High School.

Following the ceremony, people are invited to participate in the decorating of graves of local veterans with flowers provided by Floral Designs of Mount Joy. Anyone who wants to help should meet at the Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ, 11 E. Elizabeth St., immediately f ollowing the ceremony in the square. After decorating graves there, the group will walk to the Lutheran and Union cemeteries at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 11 N. Queen St., to decorate graves of veterans at that site. See Maytown pg 3

One Day or Day One

Laughter, a crowd cheering, or even a conversation with a friend or loved one helps to shape our lives, adding richness and texture to all our experiences. When hearing works like it should, your brain gets the rich input it needs to understand the sounds around you. But when your brain lacks access to the real sounds of life due to a hearing problem, it’s forced to work harder to fill in the gaps, which can be tiring. In addition, you could miss out on something special. Are you ready

step towards better hearing? We are

day one of your journey.

Additionally, there will be a brick dedication ceremony on the square at 2 p.m. on Memorial Day.

At 4 p.m., the annual Memorial Day parade will step off. Families and groups are invited to compete for prizes by dressing up or decorating to match the theme “Tomorrow, Because of Yesterday.”

“In the past, floats have been judged, and the winners were given a monetary prize for first, second or third place,” said Janie Garber, chair of the parade committee. “This year, we’ve added something new. We are encouraging families to march or to decorate their bicycles and ride along with us, and we are giving a new cash award for best of show in this category.”

She noted that the Memorial Day parade is a long-standing event in Maytown; a parade has been held to honor veterans since 1902. It is truly a community effort, she stated, adding that the parade relies on support from East Donegal Township residents as well as local organizations, including American Legion Post 809. “This is the first time we have reached out to local businesses for help with the Memorial Day events, and we got an overwhelming response from them being willing to serve as sponsors,” Garber noted. “Celebrating Memorial Day is a tradition in Maytown.”

Indians edge Mounts, fall to Knights in playoffs

The Donegal softball team has displayed its tremendous offensive strength all year long, outscoring numerous opponents by 10 or more runs during the regular season.

Upon reaching the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs, however, the Indians’ lineup had to produce in the pinch in order to punch its way to the league semifinals.

The Section Three champion Indians’ 18th win did not come as easily as some of their other victories. The Indians had to battle back to eke out a 4-3 win against Ephrata thanks to a three-run rally in the home half of the sixth inning.

“The Ephrata game was a great team win,” Wayne Emenheiser, the Indians’ head coach, said. “We kept ourselves in the game with great

pitching and defense, which gave us an opportunity to come back with some timely hitting.”

The Mountaineers, who finished second in Section Two, actually out-hit the Indians 10-7. Cara Biesecker allowed only one earned run while setting four Ephrata batters down on strikes. She also helped her cause by going 1for-3 with a run batted in. Kara Heidlauf came up with the big hit in that three-run rally. She belted a double and drove in two. Natalie Cowell went 2-for-3, also driving one run home.

The Indians battled in their next game, taking an early 1-0 lead over Hempfield in the league semifinals. But Black Knights pitcher Carley Ernst settled down and pitched a four-hitter as Hempfield ended Donegal’s chance of winning the league trophy with a 10-3 final.

The Indians (18-2) prepare for the District Three, Class 5A playoffs. Donegal comes in as the fourth seed in the district’s power rankings.

“At this time in the season, every game is going to be against worthy opponents, so

remarked.

TRACK & FIELD

Mark Overlander won the pole vault with a 13-foot effort and Caleb Kendig grabbed third with his shot put distance of 48-1 in the L-L League Track & Field Championships at Hempfield, Friday and Saturday, May 12-13.

“Mark was focused and kept his composure,” Phil Koser, the Donegal head coach, remarked. “It was rainy Saturday morning, so the pole vault didn’t get started on time. Eventually they started and even vaulted in a sprinkle.”

In the girls’ triple jump, senior Sydney Snyder earned eighth place with a 34-1.75 jump. Nya Bantum earned seventh in the shot put with a distance of 34-10.50 while sophomore Kathryn Fernald not only ran the 3200-meter race in a ninth-place time of 11:54.10, she medaled in the

seconds) it was Sophia Floyd, Peyton Mansfield, Jayanna Moant and Faith Garber.

“The sprinters and hurdlers had great races, several of them running their best or second-best races of the season,” Koser said.

The boys’ 4x800 took seventh in 8:27.26 thanks to Micah Brydon, Braden Bistline, Dylan Lenhart and Brandon Marcello.

BASEBALL

The Indians fell behind the Mountaineers and were not able to climb back into the game Thursday, May 11, in the opening round of the L-L League playoffs. The Indians entered leagues as the runnerup from Section Three, play-

ing at Section Two champ Ephrata. The Mounts topped Donegal 11-1.

“Ephrata is a good allaround team,” stated head coach Jeff Hartman. “And they’re even better at War Memorial.

“We needed to play our best game and we didn’t,” continued the coach.

Donegal heads into the District Three Class 5A playoffs seeded 11th.

“We will need our best effort to advance on the road in districts,” Hartman added. “The boys have been working hard and looking forward to this opportunity. It’s the perfect time to put it all together.”

Historical society to celebrate 50th anniversary

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society invites the community to help celebrate its 50th anniversary on Sunday, June 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the historical society building, located at 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy. The museum and schoolhouse will be open for tours, and several special events are planned.

A short program of commemoration will begin at 1:30 p.m., with guest master of ceremonies Scott E. Albert, whose late mother, Vera Albert, was one of the founders of the society and a source of historical knowledge and anecdotes about Mount Joy area personalities, places and culture. The many people and businesses who have contributed to the evolution, expansion and success of the historical society since its

inception in 1973 will be recognized and honored.

Other highlights of the afternoon will include an ice cream social, a scavenger hunt, building tours and opportunities for visitors to share their own oral history and memories of life in the Mount Joy community, which includes East Donegal and Rapho townships.

An oral history interview with Romaine Engle Edwards from Mount Joy will be available to view as part of the 50th anniversary celebration. Edwards was inducted into the Pennsylvania State Police in 1972. The interview was conducted by Macy Lake, the daughter of Kimberly and Eric Lake of Mount Joy, who is a student in Donegal Junior High

School’s Discovery class for highability students. The co-teachers of the Discovery class are Susan Heydt and Sarah Lawrence.

All activities will be held rain or shine, but in the case of inclement weather, the celebration will move into the museum and schoolhouse. No reservations are required. Parking will be available across the street and behind the society museum and schoolhouse.

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society exists to promote education and conservation of shared history. Longtime residents as well as those new to the area are invited to experience being part of the community by learning more about its diverse and enduring heritage.

Maytown’s annual Mayfest event, held on May 6 in the historic town as well as at Lloyd H. Fuhrman Memorial Park, featured a number of activities and programs. One highlight was an afternoon marriage ceremony featuring the vow renewals of longtime Maytown residents Don and Marilyn Geib, both wearing period attire for the occasion.

The Geibs were high school sweethearts who met in the library at Donegal High School their junior year. At Donegal, Don was a football player and Marilyn was a cheerleader.

Don and Marilyn married on Aug. 8, 1959. They moved into their Maytown home the following year and still reside there. Their pride and joy is spending time with their family and investing in their community, in which they have been active members for more than 60 years. Their community involvements include volunteering for their church and participating in Meals on Wheels weekly. They have also served on the local water authority for more than 40 years. The Geibs are

known for being a giving couple, and they are beloved by their neighbors and friends.

Don and Marilyn have two daughters, Tracey Geib-Lehman, wife of George Lehman, and Brenda Geib-Heffelfinger, wife of Phil Heffelfinger. The couple also has five grandchildren: Justin, husband of Stephanie Smay; Alex, husband of Alissa Smay; Katie, wife of Philip Harris; Nick, husband of Leila Smay; and Jack Heffelfinger. Their greatgrandchildren are Charlotte and Henry Smay.
