Maytown Square Bricks To Be Dedicated BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Sara Gutshall is devoted to veterans, and it shows. For the past year, the Maytown resident has been coordinating a fundraiser to replace the crumbling walkways in Maytown square with engraved bricks bearing the names of community members and businesses. The bricks will be dedicated at a ceremony on Monday, May 31, beginning at 1 p.m.

Jack Frank will narrate a video commemorating the importance of Memorial Day in Maytown.

he pandemic may have forced the Maytown Memorial Day committee to cancel its annual parade, but it didn’t stop the group from getting creative. “We were having a committee meeting, and one of our members said, ‘Why don’t we do something virtual?’” recalled Linda Good, committee member. So, the group got to work rounding up old photos of parades of the past as well as pictures of the town square through the years to showcase in a video that will be released on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, on YouTube and will also be available for purchase. Lifelong Maytown resident Jack Frank narrates the video, which runs about 20 minutes. He said choosing not to hold the parade and ceremony this year was a difficult decision, but a necessary one. “We always start the parade with the Bainbridge Band, but they are not performing together this year,” he explained. “The high school band also could not participate. We just thought it wouldn’t be much of a parade without the bands, and by

of Maytown,” Good explained. “We’re doing it from a citizen’s perspective.” Frank and Good are two Maytown citizens for whom Memorial Day is especially important. Frank’s father served in the Navy during World War II and participated in the D-Day invasion, and Good’s father also served in the Navy. Good said the video is a perfect way to honor veterans and their importance to Maytown. “I think people will really enjoy seeing this video and reliving some of the history of Memorial Day in Maytown,” she noted, “and I think they might see themselves or people they know in the pictures.” The Maytown Memorial Day video will be available on Monday, May 31, through a YouTube link. Copies will also be for sale, with proceeds benefiting the Maytown Historical Society. More details, including the link, will be available on the Maytown Memorial Day Facebook page closer to Memorial Day or can be found by searching for “Maytown Community” on Facebook or “Maytown Memorial Day Celebration 2021” on YouTube. To order a copy of the video, email Good at goodfarm1950@gmail.com.

American Legion To Host Memorial Day Parade BY CATHY MOLITORIS

When David Chobanoff learned Marietta would not be holding a Memorial Day parade this year, he took action. “I thought, ‘Maybe I can get something together,’” said the president of the Marietta American Legion Riders Post 466. “I wanted to try to do a parade if I could, so I reached out on Facebook and started talking to people, and I was really surprised to see how much support I received.” See Parade pg 9

the time we got the OK to maybe organize something, we had run out of time. It takes a long time to plan this parade.” The video features Frank talking about the history of the Maytown parade and the importance of the Maytown square. Several residents are featured in the video as well, along with a prayer and benediction and the playing of the national anthem. Frank is especially proud of one part of the video that he hopes will become an annual tradition when the ceremony and parade return in person. “We will play taps and we will read the names of all of the people from East Donegal Township who were killed in combat since the Civil War,” he said. “This is the first time these names are being read. We’ll show pictures of them, and we’ll talk about what happened to them.” Typically, the Maytown Memorial Day ceremony features a speaker who is a member of the military, but this year, the committee wanted to take a different approach. “With this video and with Jack narrating, we’re showing what Memorial Day means to the citizens

“We’re going to have a very nice dedication,” said Gutshall, who is president of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809. “I’m going to have laying of wreaths to honor our veterans. This year is the 100th anniversary of the American Legion Auxiliary. I think this is the most appropriate time to have a dedication.” Holly Shaffner, a 24-year veteran of the Coast Guard who is originally from Maytown, will be flying in from California to serve as master of ceremonies, Gutshall said. Sandy Heisey will play a medley of armed forces theme songs on the keyboard, and members of the Marietta American Legion Riders Post 466 will serve as a special guard for the square. The Rhythm Singers from Donegal High School will sing the national anthem.
