Patriotism will be on full display when the parade steps off at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, traveling along Main Street from Angle Street to Barbara Street. Joe Coover, a Korean War veteran, will serve as grand marshal.

A flurry of activity will take place in and around Maytown square on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, when a ceremony to honor servicemen and servicewomen is held along with a street fair.

The events will begin with the

61st annual Antique, Art, Craft and Collectible Show, which will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show will feature a variety of vendors selling antiques and homemade items. Food, including breakfast, will be available beginning at 8 a.m.

At 2 p.m., a program will be held in the square. State

He noted that the committee is especially appreciative of the community support it receives for the parade. “With this support, we have been able to recruit 10 bands to be in our parade,” he said, noting that bands will include the Donegal High School marching band and the Donegal Alumni Band. “We were also able

to recruit the Ferko String Band from Philadelphia and the Keystone Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps of Hope Fire Company in Northern Cambria. The String Band will be in full costume, and the Drum and Bugle Corps will play for the crowd before the parade in the reverse direction, so make sure you get there early to see them in both directions.” The committee will also award prizes for the best floats.

Coleman emphasized that the parade would not be possible with sponsors, including major sponsor Houseal Plumbing. “We have 10 divisions, each with a sponsor,” he said. “They include Hershey Heating and Air Conditioning, Berkshire Hathaway

Grand marshal Coover was born and raised in the west end of Mount Joy. “Because I didn’t have anyone pushing me to do my schoolwork, I did not graduate and I couldn’t do summer school because I had already signed up to join the Naval Reserves,” he recalled, noting that the then-principal of the high school said if Coover earned his GED while in the Navy, he would give Coover a high school

Contested on indoor or outdoor courts, pickleball is a sport similar to tennis and pingpong played with a hard plastic ball and a paddle. Now a local nonprofit is seeking to capitalize on pickleball’s recent popularity to battle human trafficking.

Enter North Star Initiative (NSI).

“It’s a way to get the community involved with something that’s going on in our own backyard,” said Alex Wagner, NSI’s marketing and communications director. “There’s a whole community that is super excited to play. The rules are easy to pick up. It’s something that’s fun and brings everyone together.”

Greiner Industries founder to speak

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will host Frank Greiner as the guest speaker during its meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 20, at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy.

Greiner will present a program about the evolution of the fabrication company Greiner Industries Inc., which he started in April 1976 in a one-car garage. The company is currently located along Route 283 on 50 acres of land in Mount Joy.

Greiner grew up on a

farm in Milton Grove and graduated from Donegal High School in 1967. He was a wrestler throughout his school years and after that with the YMCA, traveling with several other state champions and winning matches. He also raced motorcycles from 1970 through 1986 and built his own dragster frames. He enjoys hunting at locations around the world.

diploma. “So, while in the Navy a year later, I sat in a huge warehouse in Cuba with a desk and a chair and for four hours, I took the GED exam and passed,” he shared. “Principal Beahm did keep his promise!”

Moved from the Naval Reserves to the Naval Academy, Coover was then sent to Japan, where he served on the destroyer USS Black DD666. While in the Navy, Coover wrote to a female friend asking if Marianne Schofield was dating anyone. “Little did I know, my friend shared my letter with her,” he said. “We were married on Feb. 18, 1956. She passed away just before our 59th anniversary nine years ago.”

Community service was always important to the Coover family. For about 20 years, Marianne and Joe, along with their daughter Kerry Meyers and her husband, Bob, held a Christmas event at their home. “Hundreds of friends brought gifts and gave them to Santa,” Coover said, noting that the gifts were for homeless students in the School District of Lancaster. Over the years, the Coovers also gave swim lessons to hundreds of children in their backyard pool, with donations for the lessons supporting community organizations, including REYS and the Milanof-Schock Library.

Rep. Tom Jones will dedicate engraved bricks honoring members of the community who are veterans or have made an impact on community organizations.

Local Boy Scouts will be recognized for earning their Eagle Scout awards, and several state dignitaries will be in attendance, including Tracy Seiders, the state vice president of the American Legion Auxiliary, and Karla Zaar, the state chair of Americanism for the American Legion Auxiliary.

People will have an opportunity to win an American flag blanket, hand-crocheted by Nila Grose. All proceeds from the events of the day will benefit veterans, including

a veteran named Carl, who is a permanent patient at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center and who is supported by the members of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809.

Sara Gutshall of the American Legion Auxiliary has coordinated the Memorial Day events for many years.

“Veterans deserve our respect and honor,” she said. “I have brothers, cousins, uncles who were veterans. Patriotism is very important to me. Our veterans deserve the best from us because they gave their best for us.”

Over the years, Gutshall has taken an active role in restoring the Maytown square, which features monuments recognizing local

service members of various wars. She was instrumental in overseeing the installation of iron archways over the four walkways into the square, and she recently worked with local blacksmith Stan Newcomer to add lanterns to each archway. The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809 will donate eight American flags to line the walkways of the square as well.

Gutshall, now 84, was born and raised in Maytown. “I wanted to bring the square back to what I remember it was like when I was a child,” she shared. “It’s an important part of Maytown.”

NSI had so much fun with its initial venture into the competitive pickleball world in 2023 that it decided to stage another tournament this year. Last year’s event netted over $4,000 for NSI, a total the nonprofit is hoping to double this year.

“All of the money raised will directly support our women going through our program at The House,” said Wagner. With facilities to support up to 10 residents, The Harbor is a safe house that provides support in the form of classes, therapy and life skills development.

“Different people have different capacities to give,” said Wagner. “No matter how big or small it is, it truly makes a difference in the lives of these women. NSI’s ultimate goal is to have survivors graduate and live a life of

independence, whatever that looks like for them.”

Located in Lititz and founded in 2010, NSI conducts two other fundraising and awareness events throughout the course of the year: the Welcome to the Battle anti-trafficking event in January and Light Up the Night in October.

“We were needing to fill a gap, and we were

hearing pickleball all over the place,” said Wagner.

“Someone in our office said, ‘Let’s try a pickleball tournament, just because of how popular it is.’ We were like, ‘Let’s give it a try.’ We honestly didn’t know how it was going to go, but it took off. Now we’re hoping to expand it and grow it into the future.”
