E.R. Scrivener believes adults need fairy tales.
“Fairy tales are hope for the darkness of this world,” said the Mount Joy writer. “The reality of living in this world is so hard sometimes. That’s why fairy tales are important, because they give you that happy ending.”
Wanting to share her love of fantasy stories, Scrivener decided to write a book.
“I’ve always wanted to be a writer,” she said, although she earned a degree in social studies education and was a teacher for several years.
“Seven years ago, right before COVID, I began focusing on writing. I would write while my daughter was napping, and I wrote my first novel that year.”
She had friends beta test the work, and she realized it wasn’t ready for publication.
“I wrote another novel. I wrote short stories. I took classes, and I got feedback from anyone who would read my stories,” she said, adding that her friend and fellow

author K.R. Fenner was instrumental in the process. “I just learned a lot.”
She wrote three novels that she says “will never see the light of
day,” but she kept improving. She also began to lead a group at her church, Mount Calvary in Elizabethtown, after the women’s director at the church asked her

When Mount Joy holds its annual Memorial Day parade, the event will have extra-special meaning this year. It will mark not only the 250th birthday of America but also the 175th anniversary of the town’s founding.
With a theme of “Celebrating 250 Years of Freedom,” the parade will be held on Saturday,
May 23, beginning at 2 p.m. It will travel along Main Street in Mount Joy from Angle Street to Barbara Street. Main Street will close to traffic at noon to prepare for the parade.
“The Mount Joy parade has become the largest and bestknown Memorial Day parade in Lancaster County,” said John Coleman, a member of the event committee. “With its origin in the late 1800s, it has a long

At LifeCycles, a simple bike ride is the start of something bigger. With every mile, young riders build confidence, courage and resilience, skills that carry far beyond the road ahead. The nonprofit, which offers free long-distance cycling experiences for boys and girls ages 12 to 18, just kicked off its 12th season of transforming lives, one ride at a time.
Teams meet on Tuesdays at Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta, and on Thursdays at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. Both groups gather at 5:45 p.m. and finish up at 8 p.m. The season runs through mid-October.
“There are separate girls’ teams and boys’ teams, and each team has multiple ride groups based on skill level and strength, so there’s a place for teens of any level of development, including beginners,” said Lee DeRemer, LifeCycles director.
Each evening, participants experience a ride, mentoring, a hot meal and lots of encouraging coaching while making new friends.
“We provide free 24-speed bicycles, helmets, uniform shirts, safety lights, everything,” Lee said. “Each evening, approximately 25 girls and 10 women ride together, and 45 boys and 20 men ride together in ride groups of six to nine riders. We use a separate curriculum for girls and boys - the curriculum is focused on character development, life skills and spiritual growth.”

The Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, has announced the return of the Healing the Planet Grant Program. The program, funded by Giant, aims to invest in native plantings across the company’s operating areas in Pennsylvania. A total of $100,000 will be donated for native community plantings. The funding is available to tax-exempt organizations, including local groups, governments, and schools. Eligible projects must be shovel-ready and include native plantings and direct costs relating to planting.

tradition of providing a fitting remembrance to those men and women who sacrificed their lives for the freedoms which we enjoy. This year is even more special, with our country celebrating 250 years and our town celebrating 175 years.”
from the community.
“With this support, we have been able to recruit 12 bands to be in our parade, which is even more than last year,” he stated. “These include the Donegal High School marching band and the Donegal Alumni Band, as well as many others from previous years. We were also able to recruit the Ferko String Band from Philadelphia, Keystone Regiment Drum and Bugle Corp of Hope Fire Company in Northern Cambria, and new for this year is the New Holland Band.”
parade committee is also grateful for the support of parade sponsors.

Eligible expenses include plants native to Pennsylvania, equipment, educational signage, tools, and supplies. Preference will be given to applications that aim to plant the highest quantity of native plants. Up to $4,000 may be awarded to a project.
To apply by Thursday, May 21, at 4 p.m., visit www.keeppabeautiful.org/ grants-awards/grants/ healing-the-planet-grant/ healing-the-planet-2026/. Awardees will be announced in June.
This is the sixth year Giant has partnered with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to offer Healing the Planet grants. In the past five years, more than $1.3 million has been awarded to 177 recipients for projects that connected people and families to green spaces; improved or helped protect local waterways and water resources; supported projects that addressed food waste prevention, reduction, and recovery; and promoted native tree planting initiatives.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has supported community improvement initiatives and encouraged community leadership, responsibility, and respect for the environment since 1990. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, a state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful Inc., has more than 35 years of experience in organizing volunteer-driven community improvement events. For more information, visit www.keeppabeautiful.org.
The parade will be led by grand marshal Herb Ridyard. A World War II veteran, Ridyard is a former engineer and a longtime community volunteer. He earned engineering degrees from Lehigh University and the University of Virginia and continued his studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Ridyard enlisted at 17, serving with the 94th Infantry Division under General Patton in Europe, where he earned the Bronze Star for Valor and Combat Infantry Badge. He later worked for NASA and General Electric on aeronautics and missile systems. Married 75 years to Nancy Lou, he is a father, grandfather and great-grandfather who remains active in church, veterans groups and community life in Elizabethtown, where he currently resides at Masonic Village. He has written two books, “Do Your Best,” about his boyhood through his World War II experiences, and “Dreams Do Come True,” about his life since the war.
Coleman emphasized that the success of the Mount Joy Memorial Day parade relies on support
Ornate Dance Theatre will present its spring showcase on Friday, May 15, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 16, at 2 and 7 p.m. at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland. The production brings together choreographers sharing real-life stories of hope, redemption, healing, and promise. The choreographers will share the inspiration behind their creations.

He noted that the Keystone Regiment will play for the crowd before the parade, traveling in the reverse direction of the parade route, and he encouraged people to come early to see the band in action.
The committee will also award prizes for the best floats in the parade. Joining Coleman on the committee are Denny Brandt, Chris Brandt, Josh Deering and Brenda Kready.
Along with thanking the community for their continued support of the parade, Coleman noted that the
“Our major sponsor for a fourth year in a row is Houseal Plumbing. Our major sponsor for music to help with the cost of the bands is Hershey Heating & Air Conditioning for a second year in a row,” according to Coleman, who added that each of the 10 divisions in the parade has its own sponsor. The sponsors are Berkshire Hathaway-Denny Brandt, Hearing & Ear Care Center, Hershey Heating & Air Conditioning, SM Johns & Son Construction, Sheetz Funeral Home, Keystone Lawn Company, Berkshire Hathaway-Ferne Silberman & Rose Madar, Keystone Pest Control, Rotary Club of Mount Joy and Leaps & Bounds Heating and Cooling.
These sponsors are imperative for ensuring the parade continues each year, he said, adding, “The support from these and other local businesses is crucial as they are the only source of funding for the parade, which costs around $20,000 to put on.”

what gifts she could bring to the ministry.
She came up with Nook, a book club for women that she leads with a friend.
“I started Nook five or six years ago,” she said. “We started with several women meeting at my house and other houses, and now there are about 20 in the ministry. We read nonfiction, classics, modern fiction. We read anything.”
Nook inspired Scrivener to write more, and it led to the creation of the “Drowsy Dragon,” a literary magazine.
“While I was leading the book club with my friends, I realized I wanted our stories to bring people together,” she recalled.
“There are lots of literary magazines out there, but I thought if I could somehow combine this passion for book clubs and fellowship and community I found with these sisters with stories of goodness and light, that was the best of both worlds.”
Her first issue of the “Drowsy Dragon” came out last year in October. The second issue was released in April.
The biannual magazine is available locally at Seymour’s Little Shop of Books in Mount Joy and Book-
shelf Shenanigans in Elizabethtown, among other locations, as well as online at Bookshop.org, Barnes & Noble and Amazon.
The first issue features stories by Scrivener and Fenner, with one additional writer. For the second edition, she expanded to include another local writer as well as a writer based in Texas whose work she admires.
The “Drowsy Dragon” fits a niche that was missing in traditional literary magazines, she said.
“A lot of mainstream fantasy is dark. Not all of it, but a lot of it,” she said.
“My stories don’t fit into that category, but I can’t be the only one who wants some light sometimes.”
It may seem like “Scrivener” is the perfect aptronym for a writer, but it’s actually a pen name.
“The ‘E.R.’ stands for my first and middle namesElizabeth Rose,” Scrivener said, noting that she chose her pen name intentionally.
“In my first novel, there was a scrivener, a scribe, or someone who writes down another’s words and records them for them. I liked that idea, because I’m a Christian. I wanted all the stories I write to be what God wants me to write, not necessarily what I want to

write, so the name came out of that.”
She’s inspired by Psalm 45, which she has displayed on a wall in her home office.
“I look at it in my library when I’m working,” she said. “It reads, ‘My heart overflows with a pleasing theme. My tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe.’”
As if running a book club, publishing a literary magazine and being a mom to a now-7-year-old daughter weren’t enough, Scrivener is finally ready to publish her first novel.
“The Untold Bakes of Addlewood” will be released in September.
“I pitch it as ‘Julie and Julia’ meets Robin Hood,” she said. “If you like baking, French patisserie in particular, baking comes into it because I’m obsessed with ‘Great British Bake Off.’ … It came out of my love for baking, but it has adven -
ture, too.”
In her admittedly limited free time, Scrivener enjoys spending time with her husband, R.C., and their daughter in their home she’s renamed Crickhollow House, a nod to a hobbit’s house in her favorite series, “The Lord of the Rings.”
No matter what she’s doing, Scrivener tries to live by a mantra of spreading light and positivity to everyone around her.
She believes in magic, adventure and sunrise.
“The kind of magic that is hidden in the everyday ordinary. The promise of freedom, danger and discovery, and a path that leads us home,” she writes on her website. “Hope that promises us, though the night be long and dark: Sunrise is coming.”

Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, will host a concert by GloryWay on Sunday, May 17, at 6 p.m. GloryWay is a Southern gospel recording artist from Ohio.
This is a nonticketed event. For more information, call Katie at 717-875-0195.

While riders of any skill level are encouraged to join LifeCycles, the more advanced riders are invited to participate in one of four summer challenge rides. Destinations will be Cape Cod and the Great Allegheny Passage, and two groups will travel from the Adirondack Mountains to northern Vermont and northern New Hampshire.
Based in Lancaster, LifeCycles is supported by Community Fellowship Church of Lancaster and by more than 100 people who believe in the organization’s mission. LifeCycles began in 2015, when Lee and his wife, Marcie, created the program to provide friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus.
LifeCycles is open to youths throughout Lancaster County. Kids can join the program at any time during the season, Lee said, noting that many people join throughout the spring and summer as other commitments at school end and their calendars open up.
“LifeCycles is a great way to meet friends, grow and do something you

probably already enjoy,” he remarked. “Come to improve your skills, see new parts of Lancaster County and beyond in a safe and positive environment.”
Beyond supporting biking skills, LifeCycles provides encouragement for kids to step out of their comfort zone and believe in their ability to “do hard things,” the organization’s motto.
“You can expect to be seen, valued and encouraged as you grow physically and spiritually,” Lee commented. “Many parents tell us that LifeCycles is the first thing that has captured their son’s or daughter’s attention, that
they actually look forward to the next gathering.” He encourages anyone who is interested in learning more to come out and try LifeCycles.
“We meet teens where they are and help them challenge themselves at their own pace of growth, physically, spiritually and mentally,” he said. “We focus intensely on safety and proper cycling skills to equip the teens for a life of enjoyable riding. … Come and try it. It’s free, and there are no tryouts. What have you got to lose?”
