Almost Like Being There PA Family Travel Fair Goes Virtual By Ann Mead Ash

When Wendy Royal, editor of Where & When Pennsylvania and organizer of the third PA Family Travel Fair, realized that the 2020 fair, which was scheduled for April 18, would have to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, she was heartbroken for the more than 50 exhibitors. When she learned that all of them were committed to doing the 2021 event, she wanted to do something to help them. On April 21, Royal finalized plans to take the fair virtual starting during National Travel and Tourism Week, which was held from May 3 to 9. The virtual PA Family Travel Fair launched on May 4 and will continue through Saturday, May 30. Chorale Opens Auditions For Educational Choirs
Children and youths are invited to audition for the Susquehanna Chorale’s Children’s, Youth, and Young Women’s educational choirs. This year, those interested are asked to submit an audition video.
Volunteers Make Masks For Seniors Milagros “Millie” Ortiz of Columbia recently led a project to aid senior citizens who may not have masks to wear during the COVID-19 pandemic and who may not be able to purchase masks. Millie, who attends the Miracle Center Church in Mount Joy, decided to create 140 masks to deliver to Trinity House Apartments in Columbia. Millie did not know how to sew and did not own a sewing machine or have the finances to purchase the materials needed. Friends and family partnered with her to help her reach her goal. Millie’s boyfriend purchased a used sewing machine for her, but the machine broke. She then borrowed another sewing machine from Heather Lindsey of Creation Inspirationz. Millie’s sister, Jessica Ortiz, who attends Columbia Presbyterian Church, and her friend Ana Elliott

The Susquehanna Chorale invites interested children and youths to audition for its 2020-21 Children’s, Youth, and Young Women’s educational choirs. Due to the need for social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, auditions will not be held in person this year. Instead, interested participants are invited to submit an audition video directly to the Susquehanna Chorale for consideration. Videos must be submitted by Saturday, June 6. Visitors to the virtual travel fair may enter to win the package at the website. The winner will be chosen in a random drawing by Friday, June 5. Lining up to take over the Where & When social media are a mix of visitors’ bureaus, historic attractions, amusement parks, museums, and all-inclusive resorts. The Susquehanna Chorale is a 38-voice adult chamber ensemble based in central Pennsylvania and is funded in part by the Cultural Enrichment Fund and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Its educational choirs are part of its mission to enrich lives and communities through choral music. Students are taught sightsinging, vocal technique, and expressivity through a repertoire representing a variety of musical eras and styles. Students representing 40 area public and
private schools as well as homeschooled children are involved. The Children’s Chorale is composed of students in fourth through eighth grades. The Youth Chorale is made up of students from ninth grade through freshman year of college, and the Young Women’s Chorale includes women from the same age group. Rehearsals are held in Camp Hill weekly on Tuesday evenings from late August to November. The season culminates in the annual Youth Choral Festival, which this year is slated for Sunday, Nov. 22, at Messiah College in Mechanicsburg. The intergenerational event features performances by the more than 200 voices of the Children’s, Youth, and Young Women’s chorales, as well as the Susquehanna Chorale.

Summer Concert Series Canceled The 2020 season of the Mountville Summer Concert Series has been canceled due to unsettled health concerns and guidance received from the state government. Families Welcome New Life During Pandemic Two local friends recently shared the experience of having babies during the coronavirus pandemic. Jill Meador of Mount Joy and Sarah Keefer of Maytown both had due dates in April, but they were thrown a curveball when the coronavirus caused the closing of nonessential businesses, social distancing, and Gov. Wolf’s stay-athome order. “We had to wrap our heads around all the unknowns of having a newborn and all the unknowns in the world and how that would impact having our babies,” Jill said. Jill was due on April 2; she and her husband, Mitch, welcomed their son, Theodore, on March 31 at Women & Babies Hospital. Sarah was due on April 18, but she had a
Caesarian section on April 1, and she and her husband, Joel, welcomed their daughter, Kennedy, into the world. Through text messaging, Jill learned that Sarah had had her baby and was also at Women & Babies Hospital. She was further surprised and excited to find that Sarah was in the room beside hers. “We were so thrilled to be so close together, going through the same strange and beautiful experience,” Jill said. “We were going through this together, and that made it feel a little more normal.” Although the Meadors could not visit the Keefers, the two families were able to have their picture taken in the hallway while standing 6 feet apart.

The purpose of this forwardleaning project is to establish a registered apprenticeship ecosystem in southcentral Pennsylvania by expanding employer program participation, increasing the number of journey workers, and adding apprentices and pre-apprentices. The association has also been able to increase the number of trades included, such as toolmakers, machinists, maintenance mechanics, mechatronics technicians, quality technicians, and industrial manufacturing technicians, and it recently submitted paperwork to the state to add a registered automation robotics technician. Secondary :( +$9( 1$0( %5$1' 7(/(9,6,216 objectives of the new program ,1&+(6 $1' 83 )520 include increasing participation of nontraditional populations,
which are typically underserved by trades training, and more efficiently aligning available resources to better support economic growth throughout the region. The program has expanded in recent years by creating a mentor training program, adding college credit and establishing a high school pre-apprenticeship program to prepare the future skilled workforce. The association currently has more than 80 apprentices from more than 30 companies in its multi-year apprentice training program, which aims to help regional manufacturers create a steady pipeline of skilled workers to meet their needs moving into the future. The southcentral Pennsylvania manufacturing sector was recently awarded a second round of funding to further support the Next Generation Manufacturing Industry Partnership. Along with the fundraiser, members held a weeklong collection drive of household goods, such as paper towels, hand soap, and cleaning products to donate to North Star. They collected more than 250 items. North Star Initiative, an organization based in Lancaster County, was founded to support women who are survivors of human trafficking by providing them with care through a Christ-centered focus. The END IT Movement focuses on educating people on the global issue of human trafficking. NHS members also showed the film “Pricelessâ€? to high school students to raise awareness about the international scope of the human trafficking industry.

United Way of Lancaster County recently received a $10,000 grant from Truist Financial Corporation to aid in efforts to support organizations and the people they serve who are financially struggling due to COVID-19. The grant is part of the financial services company’s Truist Cares initiative, a $25-million philanthropic pledge announced in
March to support basic needs, medical supplies and financial hardship relief due to COVID-19. United Way of Lancaster County reported that Lancaster County has seen an increase in individuals and families seeking assistance for food and housing. Chef Cedric Barberet won Food Network’s “Chopped Sweets,” which was televised on April 20.
Lancaster Chef Wins Televised Dessert Competition Cedric Barberet of Bistro Barberet & Bakery in Lancaster competed on Food Network’s “Chopped Sweets” on April 20. Barberet won the competition and was awarded $10,000. Season 1, Episode 13 had the theme “Neapolitan Delight.” Barberet was one of four chefs to compete using the three classic Neapolitan flavors, strawberry, vanilla and chocolate. There were three rounds with special ingredients, which needed to be incorporated into each dessert creation. Before doing so, Barberet spent time in Philadelphia, where he was the executive pastry chef for Buddakan until March 2015. Most recently, Barberet was awarded the medal of Chevaliere de L’ordre du Mérite Agricole by the French government. Barberet is a member of the Academie Culinaire de France and is named one of the Top Ten Pastry Chefs in America by Dessert Professional magazine. He is also an ambassador for Cacao Barry. Barberet’s bakery is open on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The bakery is open for takeouts of meals, beverages and desserts during this time due to COVID-19 restrictions.
