Shop, Eat and Explore at Marietta Day

On Saturday, May 16, Marietta will take the fun to the streets.

The annual Marietta Day festivities will run along seven blocks of Market Street, which will be closed to vehicles, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A rain date for the event is set for Sunday, May 17.

Highlights of Marietta Day include tables of yard sale items, said Bob Heiserman, event coordinator.

“We have residents reserve spots in front of their house, and if they don’t live in the event area, but they live (in) town, they can reserve a spot along Market Street,” he explained. “The streets are closed from Perry to Locust streets.”

Outside vendors are also included in the event.

“We have some people who have

come for years,” Heiserman said. He added that an artisan section will also be set up.

“We reserve about 40 spaces in

a designated area for people who make art - jewelry, painting, woodcraft, stone craft,” he stated. “We also have numerous food trucks

Did you know farming is all about math and magic? Kindergartners from Donegal Primary School (DPS) learned that lesson, among others, during a field trip to Heritage Creek Farm Camp and Education Center to celebrate Earth Day, April 22.

More than 100 students explored hands-on stations throughout the working farm, located at 2126 Risser Mill Road, Mount Joy.

connected with DPS when she presented a program for Groundhog Day. That led to an invitation for the students to come see the farm in action.

“The school was very excited to visit, because we’re right in their backyard, and we’re focused on agriculture,” she said. “Our farm celebrates Earth Day every single day of the year. We’re excited to be the host for our home school district.”

Cornhole and Barbecue for a Cause

Community will be in the spotlight in a fun and tasty way at the RAISE28 Cornhole Tournament and BBQ Cookoff. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, at Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta.

Competitors in the barbecue contest will be outside, where they will cook ribs and small bites, explained Mark Unger, executive director of RAISE28.

“There will be judges who will rate the ribs and the small bites according to appearance, taste and texture,” Unger said. “The small bites are whatever the cooker wants to put into a boat. It could be brisket, pulled pork, chicken wings, mac and cheese, etc.”

Judges will sample the ribs and small bites between noon and 12:30 p.m., before awarding first-, second- and third-place winners for both categories. A People’s Choice award will also be presented. The winners will be announced at 3:30 p.m., and trophies will be awarded for first and second place, with ribbons given for third place and the People’s Choice award.

“The cornhole tournament will begin at 9 a.m.,” Unger shared. “There are two brackets: Social or Competitive.”

Cash prizes will be awarded for the first-place winners in each bracket. The second-place winners will get back the money they paid to participate in the tournament. First-, second- and thirdplace trophies will be awarded for both brackets.

have visited the farm before, as well as food service interns from the district and students in the cooking club.

“This is our first time having a full grade level out to the farm,” Hughes said.

Half of DPS’ kindergartners visited on April 22, and half came to the farm on April 29.

Despite the cool and rainy weather on April 22, the students enjoyed interactive activities throughout the property.

“At one station in the greenhouse, we talked about propagation, how we plant seedlings and the needs of the plants,” Hughes shared. “We also had them do a planting activity. They planted peas into pots to take home with them so they can see the full cycle of the peas.”

At another station, Hughes led students through a Spring StoryWalk, an informational path filled with props and panels. The weather prevented the students from walking the path, but Hughes conducted a program inside a shelter, reading a story she’s written called “Poppy and Pals Plant Peas.”

She talked about compost, the importance of healthy soil, the use of simple machines and how companion gardening works.

“Companion gardening is when you grow things that are friends, that help each other,” she told the

students. “Potatoes like to grow with peas.”

She demonstrated some of the magic that happens on the farm, pulling a string on a pea pod to reveal the secret inside - tiny peas that will multiply into more pea plants.

Keeping the students engaged throughout the day, Hughes employed her own brand of childlike wonder, telling the kids that the pea tendrils are the plant’s “fingers” that climb up a trellis, and explaining that when a farmer plants a potato, she plants it with the “eye to the sky.”

She also discussed pollinators and their importance on the farm.

At an animal station, students learned about the creatures that call the farm home, including chickens, ducks, goats, bunnies and sheep. Hughes explained how the animals are not livestock but are instead companion animals the farm staff uses to teach.

“The two things we do produce off of our farm that are animal products are eggs and wool,” she said. “Our farm is a hands-on experience of agriculture on a working farm. It’s an educational farm that’s set up for visitors to be here, seeing what we do.”

A fiber-arts station demonstrated how wool can be spun into yarn before the students worked with a partner to create “twiddles,” or friendship bracelets made by twisting the yarn.

Michele Emenheiser, executive director of the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce, brought Mount Joy Minnie with her to the festivities. She shared facts about the groundhog’s diet with the children.

Hughes said her memories of working in her family’s garden drive her development of stations for the day’s program and other public events the farm hosts.

“Our main goal at the farm is to inspire people through agriculture,” she said. “We’d like to encourage people to go into the field of agriculture, and that’s a very wide net. You could be a dairy farmer. You could be a veterinarian. You could be an accountant. There’s a wide scope, and we need people to step into these agricultural roles.”

Hughes opens her farm four times a year - once in each season - for the public to see firsthand how it operates. On Saturday, May 9, the farm will host its Plant Sale

and Spring Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors will have the opportunity to purchase plants grown on the farm, including tomatoes, peppers, herbs, vegetables and annual flowers. Activities for the day will include a self-guided Enviro-Trail; an opportunity to meet the farm animals, including the newest arrivals, spring chicks; exploration of the creek and woodland barnyard; a chance to create on an outdoor Earth loom; and more.

“We’re sitting in a very rich agricultural area,” Hughes said. “We’re hoping when kids visit us, they’re learning about the farm and developing a good foundation to choose good foods and try new foods. We like to talk about the ripple effect, that hopefully they’ll grow to become good consumers, too.”

The program is for deconditioned exercisers, beginner exercisers, and active older adults. Classes will be held on Tuesdays, June 9 to July 14, from 6 to 6:45 p.m. in the gym at the GEARS Community Center.

Trucks Will Roll to Grant Wishes

When hundreds of trucks hit the road on Saturday, May 9, they’ll be working to grant wishes. The 37th annual Make-AWish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will kick off at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. Truck parking, driver check-in and on-site registration will take place from 6 to 10 a.m. A silent auction and basket giveaways will be featured from 8 a.m. to noon. A Family Fest will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. At 11 a.m., there will be a mandatory safety meeting for convoy drivers, before remarks and a Wish Angel Remembrance at noon. The convoy will depart at 1:30 p.m., and the event will conclude at 3 p.m.

There is a new route for the convoy this year, said Lori Dietrich, director of development for Make-

A-Wish in Lancaster. The route will run west from Manheim on Route 283 to Tollhouse Road before looping back on Route 283 East and ending at the Esbenshade Road exit. The convoy will no longer travel through Mount Joy. A map of the route may be found at https://tinyurl .com/3rczvcks.

People of all ages are invited to come out for the Family Fest. Activities will include games, vendors, DJ entertainment, food trucks, costumed characters, the famous convoy clowns, a silent auction, a basket raffle, hundreds of trucks to see, and the kickoff of the truck convoy.

“Currently, there are 73 kids waiting on their wish to be granted in our Susquehanna Valley region, 29 of which reside right here in Lancaster County,” Dietrich shared.

“Make-A-Wish relies 100%

“The Family Fest is open to the public,” Dietrich remarked, “with free parking, free admission and free activities for families.” While past events charged for game tickets, each child will receive free game tickets this year, she added. A variety of food trucks will be on-site for the Family Fest, including Castenedas Food Truck, Drifters, Mocha Motion Coffee, Piper Belles BBQ and Walk-O Taco.

The festivities have a carnival-like atmosphere, enhanced by the Make-AWish clowns.

“The clowns help to spread joy to attendees and serve a very important role as donation collectors at the event and along the route,” Dietrich said. “Over the years, the convoy clowns have helped to raise thousands of dollars to grant wishes.”

Proceeds from the day will support granting life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses through MakeA-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley.

coming - I think about 12 this year.”

He noted that organizers carefully select the food trucks to not compete with the restaurants in Marietta.

“We have a pizza shop in town. We have a coffee shop in town,” he said. “We have a barbecue place in town. We try not to duplicate those with our food trucks.”

Participating food trucks will include Bricker’s Fries, Joe’s Fish and Rita’s Italian Ice.

during Marietta Day, along with businesses in the borough.

The event draws more than 200 vendors, selling everything from household items to specialty clothing.

“It’s a big variety,” Heiserman said. “You never know what you’re going to find.”

Marietta Day has a long history. It began in the late 1960s when a resident named Mary Ann Ruby came up with the idea.

“She lived on West Market Street, and this was something she thought of for the borough,” Heiserman said. “This was before the term ‘yard sale’ became popular. She called it ‘attic and cellar day,’ and it ran spontaneously every year.”

In 1979, Marietta Restoration Associates assumed responsibility for Marietta Day, and the organization ran it for two years under the direction of Dave White, Heiserman said.

Then, an organization called Main Street Marietta formed, and a grant provided funding for 10 years as the group oversaw the event before the Marietta Area Business Association (MABA) took over in 1992.

“That’s when I started running it,” Heiserman said, noting that he’s helped in organizing the event by Pat Shinkosky, Suzanne Rende, Susan Snider, Molly Fisher and Steve Ulrich.

“This event has evolved over the years,” he remarked. “We’ve had a 5K run during the event in the past. We’ve had belly dancers. We’ve had cloggers. We’ve had speakers. There

on the generosity of the community to be able to grant the wishes of critically ill children. Participating has a direct impact on local families.”

With headquarters in Phoenix, Ariz., MakeA-Wish is one of the world’s leading children’s wish-granting organizations. It serves children in all 50 states, as well as in more than 50 countries around the world. Since 1986, Make-A-Wish has granted more than 8,600 wishes.

was a supper dance after it one year. There was an antique car show connected with it, a quilt show and the Zembo String Band played. We’ve also had other bands, but we don’t do the music anymore. We leave that to the Cherry Blossom and Blues and Brews events in Marietta.”

Residents who live in the borough pay no fee to participate in Marietta Day, but money from other participants supports the nonprofit MABA in its efforts in Marietta.

“We have a subcommittee called the Beautification Committee, and we take care of the square,” Heiserman said. “We take care of the planters. We also take care of the cherry trees on Front Street, and we mow that area. We also support community efforts like the Marietta Community House.”

He noted that Marietta Day typically draws a crowd of more than 3,000 people. It’s a good opportunity to bring people into the borough, he said.

“We have a lot of people who come in for our events, and they say, ‘Man, I never knew Marietta was so beautiful and so historic,’” he said. “It’s amazing how many people say, ‘I’ve lived in this county my whole life, and I’ve never been to Marietta.’ Come to Marietta Day. You’ll see we have a lot of neat things in Marietta.”

nizers have set a goal of raising $525,000.

“The truck convoy is a legacy event for our chapter, which is honoring its 40th anniversary in 2026,” Dietrich said. “The truck convoy was the first fundraising event organized 37 years ago, and it is amazing that the event lives on today. It plays an extremely important role in the chapter’s ability to grant local wishes. We are able to keep this event going due to the generous spirit of the local community.”

Fishing Creek Offers Handyman, Remodeling Services

Fishing Creek Home Services, based out of Wrightsville, is a fully insured professional handyman and remodeling service that serves York and Lancaster counties.

“In addition to the barbecue, the Mount Joy Rotary Fry Wagon will be on-site, and there will be homemade baked goods available for purchase,” Unger said. “A kids’ table will be set up that will include face painting, crafts and games.”

This is the second year for the event, which is a fundraiser for the Christian youth center located in Mount Joy.

“Our mission is to reach local youth with the lifechanging Gospel of Jesus Christ,” Unger explained. “We provide after-school activities for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Our activities include academic assistance,

social support and spiritual development.”

Proceeds from the Cornhole Tournament and BBQ Cookoff will help the center continue to provide activities for students and families in the community.

Unger hopes people will come out for the event, either to participate or to cheer on the competitors and have something to eat.

“This is a fun, interactive event with great food,” he said. “Families are encouraged to come, as there is something for everyone to enjoy.”

New Broadband Tower to Bring Internet Service to Area Residents

Thousands of residents and businesses across northern Lancaster County and southern Lebanon County will have access to gigabit-speed internet offered by Upward Broadband following the activation of a new wireless broadband tower.

Fishing Creek Home Services, owned by John Feeser, offers a wide range of professional handyman and remodeling services.

Owned by local resident John Feeser, the business offers 15 years of experience. Among its services are trim carpentry, bathrooms, kitchens, basements, ceramic tile, drywall repairs, painting, items on honey-do lists, and miscellaneous small jobs. For more information, contact 717-894-6091, visit www.fishingcreek homeservices.com, or search for “Fishing Creek Home Services” on Facebook.

The new tower, funded in part through the Pennsylvania Broadband Infrastructure Program, expands broadband availability to more than 31,000 residents and businesses across the region. Communities where service is now available include Manheim, Lititz, Myerstown, Schaefferstown, East Petersburg, Mount Joy, Ephrata, Cleona, Lebanon and other surrounding communities. In many of these communities, residents previously had limited highspeed internet options.

To celebrate the milestone, Upward Broadband hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 11 at the Schaefferstown Volunteer Fire Company, where community leaders and local officials gathered to recognize the impact expanded broadband access will have on the region. Speakers at the event included Rachel Shetterly,

representing Pennsylvania State Rep. Russ Diamond’s 102nd District; Jo Ellen Litz, Lebanon County commissioner; and Liz Ackerman, executive director of the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce. Each highlighted the importance of reliable broadband to local businesses, residents and the region’s long-term economic growth.

The new tower utilizes advanced fixed wireless technology capable of delivering gigabit speeds over long distances, dramatically increasing the capacity and performance of Upward Broadband’s network.

The expansion represents another step forward in strengthening Pennsylvania’s digital infrastructure and closing connectivity gaps in rural and underserved communities.

The project was financed in part by a grant from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, administered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority. Residents and businesses can check availability in their area by visiting www.UpwardBroad band.com.
