Arm Of Hope 5K Will Aid Children In Ghana BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Each step you take on Saturday, May 21, can make a difference in a child’s life. The ninth annual Arm of Hope 5K will be held beginning at 9 a.m. at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy. Proceeds will benefit Arm of Hope, a Ghanaian-run ministry.
“It’s a fun event for a great cause,” said Greg Grove, one of the race directors, noting that the course is mostly flat and very family-friendly. “We take walkers, strollers, dogs, families. If you’re a serious runner, we have trophies, but if you just want to come and walk the course, you are welcome.” See 5K pg 5

Donegal Students Give Back BY CATHY MOLITORIS
n April 1, hundreds of Donegal Junior High School students completed community service projects throughout the Mount Joy area. It was all part of a school-wide effort suggested by a student. “We had a student come to us and say, ‘Why aren’t we giving back to our community as a whole school?’” recalled Courtney Bussard, a seventh-grade math teacher. Bussard is also an adviser to the Student Council, so she brought it up to the club. “The Student Council took it over, and we ended up having about 450 kids in seventh and eighth grade who participated in the day.” The Student Council members brainstormed a list of places for students to serve, and then contacted various agencies and organizations to see what help was needed. Students completed community service in 16 locations throughout the
well. “We heard from people in the retirement home, and the seniors really enjoyed having the students there,” she said. “We got a lot of great feedback.” She said the day not only benefited the community, but it also had a positive effect on the students as well. “A lot of kids don’t reach their full potential in a classroom setting, but really thrive in that outside environment,” she explained, noting that future service days will give students the option to choose their projects. “Not every kid likes to mulch, but every kid can help in some way.” Not only does the school plan to repeat and expand the day of service next year, but organizers also hope to inspire others to participate. “We’re going to reach out to other districts and share what we did,” Bussard stated. “We’re going to encourage them and say, ‘Maybe this is something you’d want to do with your school.’ It would be wonderful to do a county-wide community day in the future.”

According to Homeless Shelters Directory, there are an estimated 950 homeless individuals in Lancaster and Chester counties. It costs Good Samaritan Services (GSS) $35 to provide a night of shelter, two meals, supplies, and compassionate care to an individual. That is about one-third the cost of a hotel per night. school district. “Some of our students stayed on location. Some went to different schools in the district. Some helped clean up local parks,” Bussard said. Students volunteered at the local food and clothing banks and cleaned up trash along Main Street in Mount Joy. Others planted flowers or participated in activities with seniors at a retirement community. The projects took place over a two-hour period, but the experience was so well received, the school hopes to organize a whole day of community service next year. “We surveyed the teachers and the students when they got back from their projects, and the feedback was that they want to do it again,” Bussard noted. “We’ll be making this an annual thing. Everybody felt they did something good that day, but everyone also felt they didn’t have enough time and they’d like to spend the whole day helping.” Bussard said the feedback from the community was very positive as

since June 1999. By 2002, GSS purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to provide five people at a time with emergency housing. Currently, GSS owns 14 properties, totaling 100 beds and over 30,000 square feet. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 when it opened an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families that are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, case management services, emergency shelter, transitional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. Since July 1, 2021, GSS has served 475 people, and more than 200 individuals have graduated from the organization’s programs and are in stable housing. Starting this year, GSS will offer its clients in-house counseling, and it will expand the women’s shelter in Ephrata. The organization also opened a men’s shelter in Ephrata on April 1. Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing.

The Marietta Day street fair and town-wide yard sale will be held on Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eight blocks of Market Street between Locust and Perry streets will be closed off to vehicle traffic to provide a space where residents and vendors can sell unused items, attic finds, antiques, and more. Specialty vendors will sell tools, T-shirts, toys, jewelry, country décor, designers bags and totes, antiques, woodcrafts, books, and beauty and skin care products. Local artists and craftspeople at The Artisan’s Corner will feature unique creations. Food trucks will be ready to serve fudge, soft pretzels, German nuts, whoopie pies, walking tacos, waffles, french fries, roast beef sandwiches, sausage sandwiches, bloomin’ onions, crab cakes, pulled pork, and pizza. Live music in a variety of genres will be presented on an outdoor stage at the historic old theater, hosted by Marietta Center for the Arts. Local musicians, bands, and songwriters will perform. The event will take place rain or shine. Admission is free. Marietta Day started more than 50 years ago as a town-wide yard sale.

Sportsmen Plan Youth Field Day
Save The Date
Lancaster County Sportsmen for Youth will host the 27th annual Lancaster County Youth Field Day on Saturday, June 4, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This event is designed to introduce kids ages 10 to 15 to outdoor activities. This year the event is being held at the Milton Grove Sportsmen’s Club and Big Chiques Bowman Club; the clubs are located at 731 Milton Grove Road North, Elizabethtown. The Lancaster County Youth Field Day is held on the first Saturday of June each year, and the location switches between a few different sportsmen’s clubs. During the event, children will spend 35 minutes at each of 11 stations. The stations will be archery, canoeing, fishing/fly fishing, muzzleloading, .22 rifle, trapping, trap shooting, turkey, waterfowler, wildlife education and reptiles. Raven Ridge Wildlife Center will also lead a station. All activities will be fully supervised. Lunch will be provided for all attendees. Space is limited, and preregistra-

Schreiber To Introduce Ambassador Kids At Gala
Concerts To Celebrate Chorale’s 40 Years The Susquehanna Chorale will continue its 40th anniversary legacy season in May with two live performances of the group’s spring program, titled “A Celebration in Song.” Performances will take place on Friday, May 13, at 8 p.m. at the Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey, and Sunday, May 15, at 4 p.m. at the High Center, Messiah University, 1 College Ave., Grantham. Audience members will be invited to a reception following each performance. “Celebrate with us as we commemorate our legacy: 40 years of enriching lives through song,” said artistic director and conductor Linda Tedford. “Experience our joy as we come together with renewed excitement for singing to an audience in live performance.” The Susquehanna Chorale is a nationally acclaimed adult chamber
ensemble of 37 auditioned singers. It was founded by Tedford in 1981. The May concerts will feature songs from the chorale’s repertoire over its four decades, including sacred motets, early American hymns, love songs, and African American spirituals. Selections will include Schubert’s “Holy, Holy, Holy,” Bruckner’s “Locus Iste,” Philip Stopford’s “Do Not Be Afraid,” the early American folk hymns “Down to the River to Pray” and “No Time,” and “Java Jive,” made famous by Manhattan Transfer. The concert will conclude with Rollo Dilworth’s “Shine the Heavenly Light” and a performance of “Shenandoah” wherein the Susquehanna Chorale will be joined by several alumni. Everyone is so warm and friendly, which makes Schreiber the wonderful place it is.” Carter, who turned 5 in February, has a complex array of challenges, including autism, sensory issues, feeding issues and a vitamin C deficiency that led to a scurvy diagnosis. He receives occupational therapy to
help with his sensory issues and expand the foods he eats, and he does physical therapy to build strength. Carter has two siblings, Emma and Colton, and a chocolate Lab named Kimber. The Carter children live with their parents, Desiree and Dustin Peiffer, in Mount Joy Township. “Without Schreiber, Carter would not be able to do many of the things he can now do,” Desiree said. “We feel very blessed and extremely lucky that we found this amazing organization. I cannot thank them enough for giving me my happy little boy back.”

PUBLIC NOTICE OF SUBMISSION OF MAJOR PERMIT MODIFICATION APPLICATION FOR WASTE TYPES LANCASTER LANDFILL Lancaster Landfill, LLC is providing notice that a Major Permit Modification Application will be filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) Southcentral Regional Office in April 2022. This Application is being submitted to permit the acceptance of select residual waste in the landfill that can be used as an alternate operational cover which requires revision of the Waste Analysis and Classification Plan. Additionally, minor changes are being made to update the Contingency Plan. The Landfill is located in Mount Joy Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Copies of the application have previously been forwarded to the appropriate municipality, county and adjacent property owners. This public notification is being provided in accordance with Chapter 271.141(a) of the Pennsylvania Municipal Waste Regulations. As stated above, this request includes the use of select residual waste materials as alternate operational cover, including recycled paper deinking sludge, foams, auto shred fluff material, non-petroleum contaminated soil, soils with different texture classifications, processed construction and demolition waste, and Posi-Shell (a cement-water-fiber product). These waste streams have been previously approved by the PADEP as alternate operational cover materials under the design alternative procedures in §271.231. Lancaster Landfill has been designed and constructed with a dual-liner system meeting the Subtitle D criteria for a Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Landfill, and as such was permitted to accept Module-1 residual waste for disposal in the original permit dating back to 1992. To be clear, Lancaster Landfill intends to remain a construction and demolition (C&D) facility. We are simply seeking the ability to use pre-approved residual waste streams as cover to help support the landfill operations and minimize the use of clean soils that consume landfill airspace. In accordance with §271.141(a)(2) the host municipality and county may submit comments to the PADEP within 60 days of receipt of the Application, recommending conditions upon, revisions to and approval or disapproval of the permit, with the specific reasons described in the comments. A copy of the Application will be available for review by the public at the PADEP Southcentral Regional Office, 909 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, PA 17110. Requests to review the Application can be made by calling 717-705-4700. Fees for copying may be charged by the PADEP. “Between preschool and therapies, Journee has a phenomenal team that never gives up on her. They have become family.” Sam was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of 18 months. He is now 12 years old and has been receiving physical therapy from Schreiber for the past 10 years. His greatest accomplishments have been recovering from leg surgery and becoming strong enough to go from crawling to walking. Sam has a twin sister, Isabelle, and two guinea pigs, Juice Box and Capri. Sam and his parents, Casey and Mike Trone, live in Manor Township. “Over the past 10 years,” Casey said, “the one constant has been the amazing staff at Schreiber, encouraging Sam and providing support and information to us as parents to provide the best care for Sam.” Ellery, age 7, was diagnosed with arthrogryposis, a rare condition that developed in utero. The condition causes stiffened, curved joints and muscle weakness, and Ellery comes to Schreiber for physical therapy and occupational therapy to strengthen her muscles and work on her balance and fine motor skills for daily tasks, said her mom, Alison McIn-

This year’s gala will have the theme “A Big ’80s Prom Party” and will feature silent and live auctions and music by the Josh Squared Band. Journee sustained a traumatic brain injury as an infant, and her mother, Jennifer Halbleib, said doctors did not think she would ever learn to walk or talk. Through the work she does in physical therapy, speech-language therapy and preschool, she is walking, talking and much more, Jennifer said. Journee has two older siblings, Jade and Jayden, and a black Lab named Lola. The family lives in Mount Joy. “Schreiber has helped Journee reach milestones we were told would be impossible,” Jennifer said.

Indians finished second in the Section Three standings with a 7-1 league record behind section champ Lancaster Country Day (8-0) for the regular season. In the L-L League team brackets, the Indians played host to Cocalico on Friday, April 22, earning a 4-1 victory and punching their ticket to the semis. Donegal lost 4-0 in the semifinals to Section One cham Cedar Crest. In the Cocalico match, Conner Hyle and Austin Barrick won the number one doubles 6-3, 6-2. Akilan Murugesan topped Cocalico’s Max Hershey 6-1, 6-1 at number one singles. Jacob Erb prevailed 64, 6-3 while Keller won the third singles match 6-2, 6-1. TRACK The boys’ track team came up short in a meet at Octorara, 88-62, on Monday, April 25. Meanwhile the Donegal girls dominated in a 109-37 win. “Octorara is a solid squad and I’m really proud of the way our boys stepped up and performed,” said head coach Bryce Sadler. Jack Brady captured the 110 and 300 hurdles. Hunter Gehman gave Donegal a first-place finish in the 3,200. Sam Rothstein finished second in the 800 as well as the 1,600. Gehman anchored the 4x800 relay, taking first place with Brandon Marcelo, Braden Bristline and Dylan Lenhart. In the field, Jack Dearborn won the triple and the high jump. Dearborn finished second in the long jump. “Jack has been leading our
team in points scored in the jumps,” said Sadler. “He has been doing a great job and improving his performances week to week. “We are hoping that he’ll go far in the postseason,” added the coach. Bailey Shoaf, Kendall Finicle, Kara Nissley and Marleigh Ballard combined to win the 4x800 relay. Rayahna Clerico, Faith Garber, Sydney Snyder and Anna Brubaker claimed the 4x100. Garber also dashed to first place in the 100 with Brubaker winning the 200 and Hadley Shoaf taking three events - 800, 1,600 and 3,200. “Victoria Burton and Nya Bantum are performing really well in shot put,” said Sadler. Burton and Bantum were first and second, respectively. Snyder won the triple jump while Alyssa Werner, who took second in the triple, won the pole vault.

Kraybill Mennonite School, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy, will hold its 45th annual Pig Roast and Auction on Friday, May 6, from 4 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Friday, auction items will be available to view beginning at 4 p.m., and the live auction will begin at 5 p.m. Items will include class projects from Kraybill students, teacher events and a variety of experiences. The chorale is funded in part by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The Men’s Slow Pitch Softball League will run from Wednesday, June 1, to Sunday, Aug. 14, at the Elizabethtown Community Park soft-
ball field. There is a maximum of 20 players per team and a 10-player minimum. A team roster and registration fee are required by May 20. Games will be scheduled on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. There is a 15-game schedule with playoffs. Columbia Railroad Day will highlight the town’s rich history. BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Visit Columbia on Saturday, May 7, for a taste of history - literally. The “Shifter Showdown” will be part of this year’s Columbia Railroad Day and will feature local restaurants competing to create the best sandwich. The showdown will take place at 1 p.m. on the deck of the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St. “The shifter is a sandwich that features white bread, mayo, onion, pickles, ham, Swiss cheese, lettuce and tomato,” said Chris Vera, president of the Columbia Historic Preservation Society, who is organizing the event. “It was invented by Tuffy O’Leana, the owner of the Columbia Café, and was created for the railroad workers.” The showdown will feature local restaurants competing to produce the best shifter. Judges will include a direct descendent of O’Leana. Sandwiches are just one part of the day, which will include activities throughout Columbia. The theme of the day will be “Pennsylvania Railroad,” and activities will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. “We’ll be displaying some rare artifacts from our archives, and we’ll have guest speakers who will talk about the history of the railroad,” Vera stated. A variety of vendors will be set up, along with several Civil War groups and a World War II transportation group. Columbia Railroad Day will also feature the opportunity for participants to ride on a speeder. As Vera explained, a speeder is a small, gas-
powered cart that rides on the train tracks, pulling small cars with seats. “It was used to transport workers along the track,” he said. Speeder rides will be given from the railroad crossing at Fourth and Manor streets out to Malleable Road and back. Historic trolley tours will be offered throughout the day as well, with information provided on the significant role Columbia played in the railroad history of the state. At the Columbia Historic Preservation Society museum, 21 N. Second St., an O-scale model train layout will be open on the first floor, along with a 2,300-square-foot HOscale layout on the second floor. Proceeds from Columbia Railroad Day will benefit the Columbia Historic Preservation Society’s museum. “Join us for the day and bring your family,” Vera said. “There is something for every age group and there’s a lot to see and do. Kidmunicate Pediatric Speech Therapy, a clinic that provides therapy services to children with speech-language and feeding disorders, will open in Strasburg on Wednesday, May 4, and offer free screenings to children for the month of May. The Kidmunicate StrasburgLancaster clinic will be the third location for this successful practice that began serving youngsters nine years ago in Wayne. The Strasburg-Lancaster clinic will be located at 100 Historic Drive, Strasburg, just off Route 896, south of Route 30. Kidmunicate Pediatric Speech Therapy will offer a full range of speech-language and feeding therapy for children with shortterm issues, as well as those facing ongoing, longer-term challenges.
