Mayfest will bring history to life

From demonstrations of old-fashioned artistry to hands-on fun, Mayfest will offer something for everyone. The annual celebration will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 3. Activities will be held along West High Street and North and South King streets and in Legion Park, 20 N. King St., Maytown, all within walking distance of the Maytown Historical Society’s museum at 4 W. High St. Mayfest is a celebration of the past, an opportunity to mark the founding of the Maytown, which dates to May 1, 1760.

“Come to Mayfest to learn about your town’s past and to have a fun family day,” said Linda Good, Mayfest coordinator and vice president of the Maytown Historical Society. “You can expect to be entertained and also to learn about life in Maytown 265 years ago.”

Historical demonstrators will set up along West High Street.

Patriots Daughters of Lancaster will operate an interactive stand, highlighting Civil War medical information.

“Kids can experience tearing bandages, washing clothes on a washboard, stuffing a mattress, along with information on rationing during that time period,” Good explained.

The Color Green will offer a demonstration of glass blowing, and Deb Gepfer will demonstrate needlework. She will also have Maytown needlework sampler patterns available for purchase.

Kelly McCart will demonstrate a pottery wheel, and Alpacas of York will provide a fleece-toshawl presentation.

Penny candy will be available

for children only. John Scarpato will serve as the event’s master of ceremonies and will rove throughout the festivities with a microphone, asking attendees historical questions for a chance to win prizes.

At 2 p.m., local couple Janie and Larry Garber will mark 50 years of marriage by renewing their vows at a ceremony in front of the museum.

Second-graders from Donegal Primary School will sing songs and dance to music written in the 1800s, Good shared. “Following

the second-graders will be the traditional maypole dance done by students from Donegal Intermediate School (DIS),” she said.

“To end the program, the entire town is invited to participate in a cake walk around the square.”

There is an incidental charge for participating in the cake walk, and the prizes will be homemade cakes and cookies.

“There will be a narrated bus tour highlighting Maytown’s businesses in the 1800s,” Good said, noting that there is a small fee for adults taking the tour

For more than three decades, the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy has rolled through the county, lifting spirits and raising funds for local children battling critical illnesses. The 36th annual event will be held on Saturday, May 10. It will kick

off at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. While truck parking and driver registration will run from 6 to 10 a.m., the public is invited to a Family Fest from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The convoy will depart at 1:30 p.m. In the past, the convoy has been held on Mother’s Day, but

On March 25, 1991, the first National Medal of Honor Day was celebrated to recognize recipients of the highest award for military valor in action. Although Lancaster County has several Medal of Honor recipients, a ceremony to mark this day has not been held in the county - until now.

Thanks to members of the Sons of Union Veterans Camp 19, two local Medal of Honor (MOH) soldiers were

formally honored at a ceremony in March.

William H. Strayer was honored at his final resting place, Camp Hill Cemetery on Bruce Avenue in Mount Joy. Charles H. Fasnacht was honored at Greenwood Cemetery in Lancaster.

“To our knowledge, this was the first commemoration on National MOH Day in the county,” shared Scott M. Fasnacht, past camp commander of the Gen. George H. Thomas Camp 19, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW).

organizers made the decision to move the event to the day before the holiday in the hopes of improving attendance, enhancing volunteer availability and encouraging more participation from drivers and wish families.

“Everything else that folks love about the event remains unchanged,” said Lori Dietrich, Make-AWish director of development for Lancaster County.

The Family Fest will feature fun for people of all ages, Dietrich shared. Activities will include carnival-style games with prizes, costumed characters, entertainment from a DJ and a community expo.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase a home-style chicken dinner inside the auction building. Meals will include a barbecued chicken thigh, green beans, cheesy potatoes, a roll and butter, applesauce, a cookie and a drink. Dinners will be available for purchase on the day of the event until sold out.

A dozen food trucks, including The Pretzel Spot Cafe, Mocha Motion Coffee, Philly Cheesesteak Co. On the Roll and Holy Smoked Meats, will also be on-site.

Funds will also be raised through an online auction that will begin on Saturday, May 3, and will conclude at noon on May 10.

“Items include gift cards, experiences, merchandise and more,” Dietrich said, noting that the auction will complement basket giveaways offered on-site at the Family Fest. “All baskets and auction items will be available for pickup from 1 to 3 p.m. on May 10 at the auction building. For those that cannot pick up at that time, alternative arrangements will be made.”

Last year’s convoy raised

more than $442,000 to support the efforts of Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley.

“The 2025 goal is $500,000,” Dietrich remarked. “Anyone can help support granting wishes in the community by making a donation.”

Since 1990, more than 12,000 trucks have driven in the convoy, and the event has raised close to $10 million, granting wishes to more than 900 children in the Susquehanna Valley.

After the convoy leaves the auto auction, it will proceed along a 26-mile route through Manheim to Elizabethtown and Mount Joy. Many of the trucks will carry wish kids along for the ride.

“There is a quiet zone this year on Cloverleaf Road for our convoy fans that would appreciate a quieter experience,” Dietrich said.

Drivers can still register to take part in the truck convoy. There is a fee for registering, and fundraising is optional but encouraged.

“We are also still in need of volunteers to assist with the day’s event, including truck parking, working the carnival games, helping at driver registration and more,” Dietrich commented. “It takes nearly 200 volunteers to have a safe and successful truck convoy for all to enjoy.”

Church posts film screening

“Unexpected Peace” will be screened at Mount Joy Mennonite Church, 320 Musser Road, Mount Joy, on Saturday, May 3, at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

The film was a nominee for Best Picture in the Red Rose Film Festival.

“Unexpected Peace” is a documentary film that follows social anthropologist and Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) worker Jonathan Bornman as he explores three stories: the Amish school shooting in Nickel Mines; the murders of Murid (Sufi Muslim) migrants from Senegal in Harlem in New York City; and Muslim-Christian conflict in Solo, Indonesia.

“Unexpected Peace” is the first documentary released by Dove Tale Productions. Founded in 2021 and based in the United States, Dove Tale Productions is owned by Bornman. The company

partnered with two other co-producers: D. Michael Hostetler, a filmmaker and director from Canada, and Ehab Assal, a Palestinian cinematographer and producer from Nazareth, Israel.

Jonathan and his wife, Carol, served in Burkina Faso in the early 1990s developing water resources. After earning a master’s degree in intercultural studies with

a focus on Islam, Jonathan served with his family in Senegal from 1999 to 2009 as a Bible teacher. In 2013, Jonathan joined EMM’s Christian-Muslim Relations Team and was mentored by David W. Shenk, an author, speaker, and innovative thinker on interfaith relations. Jonathan holds a Ph.D. from Middlesex University in social anthropology.

Hostetler is an award-win-

ning producer, director, and communications consultant with more than 30 years of international experience. He is committed to peace and social justice work, with experience helping people from diverse cross-cultural settings communicate their stories.

NANCY L. WESLEY (ACHEY)

Dance company to present “Lovebug”

NANCY L. WESLEY (ACHEY)

June 28, 1947-April 17, 2025

Nancy L. Wesley (Achey), cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, peacefully left this world on April 17, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and adventure. The daughter of Earl and Elsie Achey and Alma "Sis" Young, Nancy grew up in Manheim, PA, where she formed lifelong friendships and organized luncheons for her school friends over many years. Her warmth, generosity, and devotion to others made her a cornerstone of her community. She met the love of her life, H.C Wesley III, while working at Goodwill, and together they built a life of love, exploration, and family. Their shared passion for travel led them on countless road trips, cruises, and beach visits, creating treasured memories. When her children were young, Nancy ran an in-home daycare in Lancaster, where she lovingly cared for many children in the community. Her home was a joyful and nurturing space that shaped the lives of the children she babysat and created lasting bonds with their families. Her selflessness was evident throughout her life. She volunteered tirelessly at Sacred Heart Church in Lancaster, dedicating countless hours to the nursery, organizing bingo nights, and helping with spaghetti dinners. Her home was also a sanctuary for struggling young mothers and their children, offering them support and a place to rebuild their lives. Her love for all living beings extended to animals, and she cared for countless creatures, from birds and squirrels to rabbits, cats, and dogs. She also held various jobs outside the home after raising her children, including roles at Weis Markets, Pensupreme, Core States/Hamilton Bank, and Turkey Hill. She formed lasting friendships at each workplace, leaving behind fond memories and strong connections. Her faith was a guiding light in her life. Later in life, Nancy made Hope Episcopal Church in Manheim her home church but also frequently attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Mount Joy, forming friendships wherever she worshiped. Her dedication to her family was unparalleled, and she delighted in caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, filling their days with joy and adventure. From trips to New York City and museums to outings at parks and zoos, she made every moment special. In her creative endeavors, Nancy was a gifted poet and baker. Over the years, she compiled treasured recipe and poetry books for her grandchildren, ensuring her love and creativity would inspire future generations.

“Once we did the research and identified that six of the nine MOH recipients with a Lancaster County connection were from the Civil War, we felt like it was a natural fit for the Sons of Union Veterans to take the lead.”

As Scott explained, the SUVCW is a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of the heroes who fought and worked to save the Union. It was organized in 1881 and chartered by Congress in 1954. The Lancaster camp was chartered on Feb. 13, 1889, and there has been an active camp in the county ever since.

Separate ceremonies were held at each grave site for Strayer and Charles Fasnacht.

“The ceremonies were somber and respectful,” Scott remarked. “We had beautiful March weather, warm sun and a brisk breeze. … We were pleased that the Lancaster County commissioners did create a proclamation stating that March 25 was National Medal of Honor Day in the county. That was very nice.”

The ceremonies began with remarks from Brian Remmey, camp commander of SUVCW Camp

19. The Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard performed the national anthem at the beginning of the program and played taps at its conclusion.

“The Red Rose Honor Guard were amazing,” Scott said. “They had a great turnout, and the detail leader was a retired three-star general - Lt. Gen. Dennis Benchoff.”

The Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard is a volunteer organization of veterans and service members dedicated to honoring the fallen. Established in 1998 as a nonprofit, it provides free military funeral honors, including flag folding and presentation for Lancaster County veterans. Since its founding, the group has honored more than 7,500 veterans with these ceremonies, ensuring they receive the recognition they deserve.

Jodi Barone, director of the Lancaster County Department of Veteran Affairs, presented the proclamation at Camp Hill Cemetery, while MOH descendant and SUVCW Camp 19 member James Fasnacht presented it at Greenwood Cemetery.

Peter Byrne, senior vice commander for Camp 19, provided a brief history of the Medal of Honor, and Scott delivered remarks about both Strayer and Charles Fasnacht, who is Scott’s great-grandfather.

Strayer, who lived from 1847 to 1876, was a U.S. Army soldier awarded the Medal of Honor for gallantry in action during the Indian Campaigns. Serving with Company B, 3rd U.S. Cavalry, he fought in an April 26, 1872, battle near Loupe Fork, Neb., alongside Buffalo Bill

Cody. Despite being outnumbered, Strayer bravely engaged Sioux raiders. Strayer, who was born in Maytown and died in Bainbridge, received the Medal of Honor on May 22, 1872.

Sgt. Charles H. Fasnacht of the 99th Pennsylvania Infantry was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery during the Civil War. On May 12, 1864, at Spotsylvania, Va., he captured the flag of the 2nd Louisiana Tigers (C.S.A.) in a fierce hand-to-hand fight. He received the Medal of Honor on April 2, 1878.

Born in Lancaster County in 1842, he died in 1902.

Additional MOH recipients from the county are Milton Blickensderfer, Trustrim Connell, Isaac N. Fry, Chester Furman, John Kinsey, Robert Reem and William D. Port.

Both local National Medal of Honor Day programs included wreath-laying ceremonies.

Scott noted that he hopes to make this program an annual event.

“The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War exist to help perpetuate the memory of the soldiers, sailors and Marines who fought for the Union during the war. So we were helping to fulfill our duty by holding these commemorations,” he said.

“Of course, we support the men and women who have served our nation in the military throughout its history, so we are always interested in ways that we can do that.”

He encouraged people to learn more about the Medal of Honor and its recipients by visiting the website for the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, www.cmohs.org.

“They are the official organization that supports MOH recipients, and they were behind the creation of National MOH Day,” he shared.

“The bus will also stop, drop off and pick up at the huge vendor fair organized by the Shank Shoppe in Legion Park. There will be 93 stands in the park, with a variety of quality wares for sale and also including a petting area with goats.”

Numerous food trucks will set up along King Street, and the museum will sell hot dogs, chili and baked goods.

“A family scavenger hunt will begin near the museum, and the questions and answers will take you on a trip around Mayfest,” Good remarked. “Prizes for completing it will be a game played by kids in Maytown long ago.”

Crafts and games for children will also be featured.

At Maytown Reformed Church, 11 E. Elizabeth St., pictures of Maytown historical houses, created by first-grade students, will be on display.

“All first-graders participated in Mayfest by drawing a picture of an actual house in Maytown,” Good explained. “Pictures were judged, and winner ribbons will be on the winning pictures.”

An old-fashioned popcorn wagon will be set up on High Street, and the old bank on West High Street, now a bed-and-breakfast,

Proceeds from Mayfest are used to support efforts to preserve Maytown’s past.

The Elizabethtown Flower Club will meet at noon on Monday, May 5, at the Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. The meeting will include the club’s annual spring silent auction. Members are asked to bring seasonal decorations, plants or flowers, baked goods, and other items to bid upon.

Tickets will be sold to win a hand-carved bird designed by local woodcarver Danny Ebersole, and the museum will be open with a new exhibit on Maytown businesses in the 1800s. The museum will also showcase a recently recovered needlework sam-

“We are having a capital campaign to raise money to make our outbuilding climate-controlled in order to preserve our valuable archive collection,” Good said. “We also have monthly expenses to keep our museum and the property in good condition.”

The rain date for Mayfest will be Sunday, May 4, but many of the activities will not be held if the event is postponed.
