Help Needed to Plant Community Garden
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Friends of Donegal is gearing up for another season of feeding the community, and the organization can use your help. A planting event will be held at the nonprofit’s community garden, located at Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 16.
“This is a kid-friendly event,” said Andrea Riefenstahl, president of Friends of Donegal, noting that people of all ages are invited to help with the planting. “This is a 3.5-acre space that Friends of Donegal uses to provide free fresh produce to our community members with food insecurity challenges.”
People are encouraged to bring their own gardening tools to plant vegetables and flowers.
“Friends of Donegal is providing a free pair of garden gloves to

everyone who comes out that day,” Riefenstahl shared.
People will help with bed prepping, planting and some mulching.
Friends of Donegal began about four years ago with a mission to support members of the community. “Our three free programs are

Celebrate community and history while enjoying some delicious food at a Cinco de Mayo Dinner. The event will be held at Saint Luke Episcopal Church, 209 S. Market St., Mount Joy, on Tuesday, May 5, from 4 to 7 p.m. The meal will be available for dine-in or takeout.
“Each meal will include two mouth-watering tacos, either chicken or beef, on your choice of a hard or soft tortilla,” said Lynn McCleary, a member of the church’s hospitality committee. “Guests will garnish their own tacos with fresh veggies, cheese, sour cream

A children’s tent will feature activities such as inflatables, face painting, games and a dunk tank from 4 to 8 p.m. At 7 p.m., a seventh-grade vs. eighthgrade relay on an inflatable obstacle course will be held. A family-friendly movie will be shown at 7:15 p.m.
At 5 p.m. on Friday, the auction will begin, featuring home décor and household goods, including gift baskets. At 6 p.m., class projects will be spotlighted in the auction.
“Every class makes an auction item/basket to sell. The entire class helps out,” said Suzanne Snyder, administrative assistant. “Some baskets include self-care coffee basket, art made by the class, flower garden items, pickleball items, play-dough sets, movie-night basket, kitchen

and salsa, plus sides of Mexican rice, refried beans, warm nachos, salsa, dessert and a drink.”
The meal will be prepared by the church’s Chef Steph.
“Back by popular demand, our own Chef Steph will bring a sizzling taste of Mexico to Mount Joy,” McCleary remarked. “Steph’s culinary career has taken her in
many delightful directions. Because real estate is now her main job, Steph treasures any time she gets to spend in the kitchen, especially when cooking Mexican food and balancing all the spices just right.”
Salsa music will stream during the meal, adding to the festivities.
war - the French would later capture Mexico City - it became a lasting symbol of resistance and resilience against foreign intervention.”
McCleary added that in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has taken on additional layers of meaning.

“And if anyone is inspired to dance, we’ll find a way to make room!” McCleary said.
This is the first time the church has held a Cinco de Mayo meal.
“During the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, Chicano activists embraced the day as an expression of Mexican-American cultural pride and a call for social justice,” she said. “At Saint Luke, we honor Cinco de Mayo with intention.”

“We were brainstorming ways to host a crowd-pleasing event between our pancake supper and strawberry festival,” McCleary explained. “This date worked perfectly.”
She noted that the celebration is more than just a meal; it’s a way to honor history.

“Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 - a moment when determination overcame the odds,” she said. “After Mexico suspended payments on foreign debts, France, under Napoleon III, invaded with the goal of establishing a monarchy. In the town of Puebla, a modest and largely outmatched Mexican force of roughly 2,000 to 4,500 soldiers, led by Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza, achieved a stunning victory over a welltrained French army of about 6,000. Although the triumph did not end the
She hopes people will come to the meal to share in fellowship.
“We also see the day as a bridge between cultures and communitiesa chance to gather, share stories and enjoy delicious food together,” she said. “In a time when dining out can feel like a luxury, our supper offers families a welcoming, affordable way to enjoy a meal together, whether dining in or taking it to go. And for those who love Mexican cuisine but would rather skip the crowded restaurant scene on a busy weeknight, Saint Luke is the perfect place to be.”
Proceeds from the meal will support the building fund of the church, helping the congregation care for a historic church that has served the community since 1909.
“Maintaining an older building brings ongoing repair needs, and keeping pace with modern technology requires thoughtful upgrades,
all of which place added demands on our budget,” McCleary said. “Fundraisers like this one help close that gap. Just as importantly, the people of Saint Luke embrace these events as more than financial support. They are opportunities to come together in shared purpose, fellowship and joy.” She invites anyone who’s hungry for food and friendship to come to the meal.
“Let us cook for you, let us serve you, and let us enjoy Cinco de Mayo together,” she said. “You are guaranteed to leave snapping your fingers, smacking your lips and smiling. Nos vemos alli - Spanish for ‘see you there.’”

Getting Ahead in a Just Getting By World, Donegal Community Gardens and Donegal Power Packs,” Riefenstahl said.
The organization operates three gardens, covering more than 5 acres of land. In addition to the one at Donegal Presbyterian, sites are located at Florin Church, where some plots are still available for families or individuals, and Mount Joy Mennonite church, where bulk vegetables like potatoes are grown. The garden at Donegal Presbyterian includes 15 varieties of vegetables. New this year, it will include sweet corn and a variety of annual and perennial flowers. Friends of Donegal also recently purchased a shed from Glick Woodworks to protect tools and equipment.
The gardens have proven to be very successful, Riefenstahl said. In 2024, 1,000 pounds of produce was donated. In 2025, that number rose to 2,100 pounds, and the goal for this year is 3,500 pounds.
“Power Packs currently serves about 80 families. We feed about 300 people every other week; almost half that number comprise children in the Donegal School District,” Riefenstahl said. “We are giving 35 to 40 pounds of food at each distribution.”

Along with the community planting day, Friends of Donegal relies on
help from volunteers at other times to get the gardens ready.
“The senior apartment residents helped for two Saturdays in March to start our initial planting,” Riefenstahl said. “They were able to do about 2,000 that went into our three greenhouses that will be planted during the May 16 event.”
Adding flowers to the garden this year will provide another way to support families, she noted.
“We would love to bless our hardworking moms, dads (and) guardians with a bouquet of flowers as they pick up their Power Packs food,” she said.
She encourages people to come out for the community planting day, noting that it will be an opportunity for fellowship and service.
“You are giving back to the community and helping to support vulnerable populations - children and adults with food insecurity challenges,” she said. “Everyone needs to eat to learn, to live and to thrive.”
Water and light snacks will be available at the planting event. A portable toilet will also be on-site.
