National Day Of Prayer Will Focus On Community BY CATHY MOLITORIS

“Our country needs prayers,” said Nancy Shonk, summing up the mission of the Mount Joy National Day of Prayer. “We want to honor the people in our community, to pray for them.” The community is invited to a prayer breakfast on Thursday, May 5, at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. Doors will open at 6:15 a.m. and breakfast will be served

until 7 a.m., followed by a program and prayers from 7 to 8 a.m. “We do it early in the morning so people can get to work afterwards,” said Shonk, who is on the organizing team for the event. The Mount Joy National Day of Prayer is open to anyone of any faith, and it offers an opportunity to pray for the community, Shonk said, adding that this year’s theme follows the national theme “Exalt the Lord who has established us,” based on Colossians 2:6-7. See Prayer pg 3

Local history will be on full display at Mayfest.

Mayfest Will Celebrate Maytown “This is a chance to learn about our history,” said Autumn Kingsboro, describing Mayfest, a Maytown-centered festival that will be held on Saturday, May 7. “You will get that sense of going back in time and you’ll actually get to walk through the town and see that history revived.” Mayfest will be held in and around the Maytown Square from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Although the event has a long history, this is the first time it’s being held since 2018, Kingsboro said, adding, “We are really excited to bring it back.” This year’s theme for Mayfest is “Celebrate Maytown!” and everything about the event highlights that idea. Festivities will include a self-guided tour of Maytown, food, demonstrations, vendors and more. “New this year, we’re partnering with a car dealership in town, Siegrist Automotive, for a car show,” Kingsboro stated. “We’re also adding a scavenger hunt for

children, and we’re hoping that can be a family event, where people can walk around the town and read signs depicting the history of Maytown.” Scavenger hunt participants will receive a wooden nickel to spend at the kids’ craft area in the square or at the Penny Candy Shoppe set up for the day. Tours will be offered of historic properties in Maytown, including the Old Maytown Bank, 13 W. High St., which is now The Bank House Airbnb, and the Frank-Brown Garage, in the rear of 100 S. River St. A variety of craft vendors will be set up throughout the event, and several historical demonstrations will be featured. Donegal Primary School first-graders will display art at Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ, 11 E. Elizabeth St., and an exhibit of Maytown school yearbooks as well as a quilt and textile exhibit will be held at Maytown Church of God, 14 W. Elizabeth St. The Maytown Historical Society’s museum, 4 W. High St., will host an exhibit titled “Old Home Week 1910.” Live music from Glenwood

will be featured on the square at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., and Bonnie Frank will provide a dog agility demonstration at the rear of 111 S. River St. at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. “At 2 p.m., we’re going to have a wedding on the square,” Kingsboro said, noting that two local people will renew their vows and then serve as May King and Queen. Mayfest will wrap up with a concert by Donegal Primary second-grade singers and dancers as well as a cake walk and traditional Maypole dance. “Mayfest is a full day of activities, and we’re hoping people will come out and stay for the day,” Kingsboro said. “Younger kids will be able to learn about and appreciate the history of Maytown, and adults will be able to remember when. This is a day where we say, ‘Community matters.’ We encourage everyone from the community to come.” For more information on Mayfest, visit https://maytown history.com or the Mayfest event page on Facebook. No pets will be permitted at Mayfest. Service animals will be allowed.

The Mount Joy National Day of Prayer breakfast will be held on Thursday, May 5.
