Celebrate small-town fun at Mayfest

When it comes to Mayfest, an annual celebration of Maytown, this year’s event is going to be bigger and better than ever, said Linda Good, event coordinator.

“This will be the first year we are having it in two locations,” she stated. “We are limited with space right in Maytown, and since we had so many vendors who were interested, and so many things we wanted to do, we had to look for a second location.”

Mayfest will be held on Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities will take place in historic Maytown as well as at Lloyd H. Fuhrman Memorial Park. The park is located at 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta.

In downtown Maytown, featured festivities will include a house and yard tour of 10 homes. Tickets for the house tour will be available on the day of Mayfest at the Maytown/East Donegal Museum, 4 W. High St. During Mayfest, the museum will display textiles, coverlets and quilts made in Maytown, and displays of school yearbooks

will be featured in the Church of God, 14 W. Elizabeth St. Additional festivities will include the High Street Tavern food stand, serving lunch and dessert in the yard behind the museum; demonstrators of historic crafts outside the museum; and a 2 p.m. program featuring the renewal of vows of a Maytown couple. Second-grade students will perform songs and dances; pictures from a first-grade art contest will be on display at Maytown Reformed Church, 11 E. Elizabeth St.; and a traditional maypole dance will be performed by alumni dancers. “I am looking for people who have danced the maypole when they were in elementary school and who would be interested in dancing it again this year,” Good remarked.

A guided bus tour will take visitors to historic sites throughout town, and penny candy will be available for kids at Ye Olde Shenk’s Store. Also at the store, cookies, whoopie pies and other treats will be for sale. The Church of God will feature a quilt display, a town cakewalk will be held following the maypole dance, and costumed storytellers will be located throughout

Maytown. A historical scavenger hunt with prizes will also be offered.

At the park, festivities will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. “We will have 87 vendors who will offer a variety of items,” said Megan Shank, who is organizing that portion of Mayfest. Several food trucks will be on hand, live art will be featured and cash giveaways will be held. Live music will be performed in the park by Steel Radiance from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and by Handsome Greg beginning at 2 p.m. Shank noted that she is still looking for student volunteers to help with the event. Anyone interested in volunteering may call 717-426-1526 and leave a message.

Mayfest is an annual celebration to mark the founding of Maytown, which dates to May 1, 1760. “Mayfest is a wonderful time to come out and learn about the history of Maytown, have lots of fun and greet people that you haven’t seen for a while,” said Good.

The rain date for Mayfest will be Sunday, May 7, from noon to 5 p.m. For more information on Mayfest, search for the event on Facebook.

For more than 90 years, Harold Billow lived in Mount Joy. Although he passed away in May 2022 at the age of 99, Billow will not be forgotten in the community.

Rep. Lloyd Smucker introduced legislation to rename the Mount Joy post office in honor of Billow, and it was signed into law last December. On April 4, the Harold

Billow Post Office Building, 1 E. Main St., was dedicated in a ceremony led by Smucker. He was joined by Mount Joy Borough Mayor Tim Bradley, Lancaster County Commissioner Josh Parsons, state Rep. Tom Jones, United States Postal Service manager for operations integrity Nathan Luttringer and postmaster of the Mount Joy post office Christina Willig.

Honoring an American hero 5K will raise funds for African camp

W hen children attend the Arm of Hope camp in Ghana, Africa, they not only experience fun and fellowship, but they receive so much more. “Camp gives them three meals a day, which a lot of them don’t get on a regular basis, plus games, story time, small group time activities and Bible teaching time,” explained Greg Grove, who volunteers with the camp. “It’s like a Bible school on steroids - all day long for a week.”

You can help send a kid to camp

by participating in the 10th annual Arm of Hope 5K. The race will be held on Saturday, May 6, beginning at 9 a.m. at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy.

Grove said the race is a fun opportunity for people who are serious runners and for those who just want to get out and enjoy a community event. “Walkers, strollers and pets are welcome,” he shared. “We have lots of door prizes, as well as homemade baked goods for the top finishers in each age bracket.”

Billow was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943 and trained as a technician. During World War II, he was part of Battery B of the 285th Field Artillery Observation Battalion. He was deployed to France in 1944 at the age of 21. On Dec. 17, 1944, Billow and 120 others in his unit were captured by Nazi soldiers who killed 87 of the captured American soldiers in an attack that would later become known as the Malmedy Massacre. Although Billow was not hit by the bullets, he fell to the ground and pretended to be dead as the Nazis walked among the survivors and shot any living man in the head. After several hours, Billow escaped by running to a nearby house with other survivors before fleeing again from the Nazis and finding safety with the U.S. 30th Armored Division.

When he returned to the United States, Billow spent the rest of his life in Mount Joy, where he was a member of VFW Post 5752, the Mount Joy fire department, American Legion Post 466 in Mari-

etta and the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge. Each year, he honored his fellow soldiers lost during the Malmedy Massacre by planting 87 American flags in his front yard on Memorial Day, July Fourth and Veterans Day. When he died last spring, he was the last known living survivor of the massacre.

Over the years, Smucker met Billow several times, and upon learning of Billow’s passing, he took the steps necessary to name a federal building after the American war hero. “Representative Smucker believes it’s critical for us to remember the sacrifices and service of our nation’s World War II veterans,” shared Eric Reath, press secretary for Smucker. “Representative Smucker believes that it’s appropriate for the federal government to pay tribute and to honor the memory of individuals who made a difference in their communities or in service to the nation. Mr. Billow is certainly one of those individuals; he is an exceptional member of America’s Greatest Generation.”

Donegal posts three 15-run margin victories

W hen the Donegal softball team topped Garden Spot 16-1 on Friday, April 14, it was the third consecutive game in which the Indians had beaten an opponent by a 15-run margin.

The reasons for the success include an all-out team effort for hitting as well as everything else it takes to win games.

“ With everyone back from last year, we’re definitely a more experienced team,” head coach Wayne Emenheiser said. “Our defense has improved tremendously over last year.”

The offense? Oh yes, the offense. That’s the part of your team that scores all those runs.

On Friday, the Indians offense received contributions from several batters, including

junior Bella Mackison, who slugged a home run and drove in five runs on a 3-for-3 afternoon at Donegal.

Natalie Colwell went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two driven in. Kara Heidlauf doubled and drove in two. She also reached base twice on walks.

Starting pitcher Cara Biesecker gave the lineup what it needed. Slotted in the leadoff spot, the senior pitcher drew a walk and was twice hit by a pitch. She scored two times.

“We are hitting the ball hard 1 through 9, including the long ball,” Emenheiser said. “We have had five different girls who have hit home runs already this season.”

Biesecker has provided solid pitching. In games such as this, with the overpowering offense,

the pitcher typically doesn’t throw a lot of pitches due to the mercy rule.

Biesecker faced only 13 batters and allowed five hits and one walk. She struck out two.

“Her maturity and off-speed pitches, she has made a difference in the circle,” added Emenheiser. “She has the ability to keep batters off balance.”

On Monday, the Indians defeated Cocalico 14-4 on the road, improving to 9-1 on the year. The game went five innings before being called on the 10-run mercy rule.

Biesecker sat down five batters on strikes and allowed only five hits and two walks. She helped her cause with a threehit day at the dish, scoring one run and knocking in another.

Heidlauf hit a blast that left the ballpark in this game. She went 3-for-3 with the home run, triple and four RBI’s.

Allie Beamesderfer also had three hits, including a double and a triple. She knocked in two runs. Mackison (2-for-4) slugged two doubles. Emma Garber went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI’s.

And speaking of contributions 1 through 9, Esther Myers had two singles and a run batted in out of the number nine spot.

The Indians improved to 101 with their 11-1 defeat of Elco on the road Wednesday afternoon. Garber had a double and a homer, driving in four of the 11. Biesecker singled twice and, in the circle, allowed only four hits while striking out four.

Ruth Myers was on base three times - two singles and reaching on an error. She scored three times. Heidlauf drove in a run as did Mackison.

BASEBALL

The Indians made their three-game losing streak a distant memory by playing solid baseball and stringing together f our consecutive victories. Donegal improved to 7-4 on the year.

“Always nice to get the bleeding stopped,” head coach Jeff Hartman said.

Coy Allman slugged a tworun homer. Jaden Fabian doubled and scored a run as the Indians held on to beat Garden Spot 8-6 on Friday, April 14, in New Holland. The Spartans’ three-run rally in their last at bat cut a comfortable 8-3 lead to 8-6.

Speaking of stopping the bleeding, Brock Hammaker came in and recorded the final two outs. The Spartans had already scored two on a two-run homer. Ryan Speers also hit a home run after Hammaker entered the game.

The 6-foot junior fielded the next two balls that were put in play, recording an assist and a putout.

“Brock Hammaker had a very good night on the mound and at the dish,” Hartman said. “ We played solid defense and had some timely hitting.”

On Monday, Donegal held on to defeat Cocalico 6-3. The team won its fourth straight game, edging Elco 6-5 on the road Wednesday, April 19.

BOYS’ TENNIS

The Donegal tennis team improve to 5-2 in the L-L

League and 7-3 overall by defeating Lancaster Mennonite and Lancaster Catholic on the week of April 17.

On Monday, the Indians topped the Blazers at LMH by a 7-0 score. Akilan Murugesan and Landon Keller were instrumental in the win. The two teammates paired up for an 8-3 victory at number one doubles. They also won their singles matches with Murugesan taking the number one singles 7-5, 6-1 and Keller following that up with a 6-4, 6-2 team point.

Alex Monchik and Noah Rohrer formed a winning combination at number two doubles, recording an 8-2 win. Bo Moose, who also won the number three singles 6-2, 6-3, and James Turbedsky claimed the third doubles 8-4.

Rohrer came back from a 6-4 loss at the fourth singles match to win the next two sets 6-3, 10-4.

In the match with Catholic, Rohrer and Monchik took the first doubles 8-0 while Murugesan and Keller claimed the second doubles 8-6.

The twosome of Turbedsky and Moose gave the Indians another team point at doubles.

Rohrer (6-2, 6-0), Moose (61, 6-2) and Keller (6-2, 6-4) were victorious in their singles matches.

TRACK

The Indians visited Chester County’s Steel City on Saturday, April 15, for the Coatesville Invitational.

“ We made it past halfway through the invitational before the meet was canceled due to the weather,” Phil Koser, the Indians’ head coach, explained. “It was a dis-

appointment to those who didn’t get to compete.”

The highlights of races that did finish included Caleb Kendig’s 48-foot-5 shot put throw and Chad Rambal’s personal best 20-foot-long jump.

“Kathryn Fernald was 12th all-time for Donegal in the mile,” Koser said. Fernald ran a 5:31 pace.

“Molly Myers set a freshman mile record - 5:28.26, which was also number nine all time at Donegal,” Koser added.

In the girls’ distance medley, KcKyla Bantum and Marleigh Ballard teamed up with Myers and Fernald for fourth place overall. The boys’ foursome of Braden Bistline, Micha Brydon, Cadel Barber, and Dylan Lenhart took sixth.

On Tuesday, April 18, the Octorara boys’ team topped Donegal 93-57 while the Donegal girls remained unbeaten (3-0) with an 89-60 defeat of their Section Three rivals.

Senior Faith Garber sprinted to victory in the 100-meter dash in addition to winning the 200-m.

Myers gained another distance victory with a 1,600-m first-place finish. Sophomore Addison Houck won the high hurdles.

Sydney Snyder’s triple jump and Claudia Taylor’s 6-6 pole vault were also firsts for the Indians.

In the boys’ meet, Brody Bonham beat the competition in the 100-m while Andrew Myers went on to win the 400.

Mark Overlander won the pole vault while Kending earned yet another shot put victory.

Cruising with confidence

What are the benefits of riding a bike? How about a healthy dose of confidence, goal setting and personal growth? That’s the mission of Lifecycles, a nonprofit Christ-centered mentoring program committed to building young people of character through bicycling.

The organization kicked off its ninth season on April 24. A girls’ team meets on Monday evenings at Warwick Township Municipal Park, 315 Clay Road, Lititz. Boys’ teams meet on Tuesdays at Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta; on Wednesdays at Warwick Township Municipal Park; and on Thursdays at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. Groups ride from 6 to 8 p.m.

“This is a positive and encouraging environment to learn how to set your goals and grow with other teenagers,” said Lee DeRemer, who founded the organization with his wife, Marcie. “There’s no bullying, and

everybody works together. Everyone is in a group for their skill level. We are open for boys or girls between the ages of 12 and 18, and everything we provide is 100% free - the bikes, the meals, the equipment, helmets, everything.”

Along with meeting once a week for their season, which runs through August, Lifecycles teens also participate in special challenge rides. Five teams will be riding during the last week in July and the first week in August, Lee said. One team will travel from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. Two boys’ teams and one girls’ team will each ride a loop around Lake Champlain on the border of New York and Vermont, covering 380 miles in seven days. “Our 15 most advanced riders will be riding from Portland, Maine, 530 miles all the way to Valley Forge, Pa.,” Lee noted.

In addition to the challenge rides and the weeknight rides, teens are also invited to participate in Saturday rides throughout Lancaster County.

“These are opportunities to try something new and be out all day or almost all day long,” Lee said. “They are opportunities for mentoring and more confidence building.”

He emphasized that although this season has already begun, teens can join Lifecycles at any time. “We have a lot of kids who are involved in spring sports, and we tell them, ‘Hey, just wait until school is over and come on out that first week in June and start right up with us,’” he shared. “They haven’t missed anything by missing

Community Celebration for Glatfelter Memorial Field

the first few weeks.”

Lee said the success of Lifecycles has relied heavily on volunteers, and the organization is always looking for more people to help.

“After nine years of doing this, it’s really wonderful to be part of the community where there’s so many people pitching in and so many different ways to help one another,” he remarked. “We are really thrilled to be a part of that.”

Community has always been at the heart of Glatfelter Memorial Field, located at 1249 Lancaster Ave., Columbia. Now you are invited to take part in a Community Celebration at the field on Saturday, May 6, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We wanted to give families something to do and give kids a little bit of old-fashioned fun,” said Robin Gamby, secretary of the Gladfelter Memorial Field Trust board and fundraising chair. “If you are looking to come out and have

some old-fashioned fun, please join us. We want to bring the community together.”

The festivities will include food trucks Cafe 301 and Kurtz’s Concessions. Gift card bingo will be played in the large pavilion starting at noon. A variety of games and activities will be available for children as well. “We are going to have a dunk tank, which is something I know the kids love every year when they have it at National Night Out,” Gamby noted. The event is a fundraiser for the field, which is a private facility and

Prizes will be awarded for the top finishers, and all participants are invited to return to the Catholic War Veterans post, 250 N. Seventh St., Columbia, for a chicken barbecue dinner beginning at 3 p.m.

The mission of the Catholic War Veterans is to provide services for God, for country and for home, Ernst commented.

“We support all veterans,” she shared. “We have 650 members from across Lancaster County.”

tals, participating in parades, hosting an Easter party and a Christmas party for families, distributing food to veterans throughout Lancaster County and holding flag retirement ceremonies on Flag Day, June 14.

Both Ernst and Mastriania said the club helps them fulfill their desire to serve veterans.

“My father was a veteran. He served in the Army,” Ernst shared. “My dad was my heart.”

Mastriania served in the Marine Corps from 1980 to 1983 and has been a member of the Catholic War Veterans since 2016. He said he not only likes helping other veterans through the organization, but also enjoys the club atmosphere and the bonds that have formed between members. “We are always looking for more members,” he said. “We get a lot of positive feedback from our members. They say it feels like they are with family when they are here.”

Supporting mission work with strawberry waffles

Come out to Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, on Saturday, May 6, and you can enjoy an all-you-can-eat breakfast that supports the church’s Mission Outreach Team. A strawberry and waffle breakfast will be served from 6 to 10 a.m., or until sold out, in the fellowship hall of the church. “The star is our strawberry waffles,” noted Gail Ruhl, who heads the Mission Outreach Team with her husband, Chuck. “We normally get our strawberries from North Carolina, where they are fresh in season right now. We are also going to have pancakes, scrambled eggs as well as eggs to order, breakfast casseroles, bacon, sausage, home-fried potatoes and beverages.”

Proceeds from the meal will benefit a mission trip church members will take in June. “We’re actually venturing into a new area we’ve never gone before,” Gail said. “We are going to be going to Vermont, near the capital, Montpelier. We’re going to be working alongside Central Vermont Mission.” Gail said the mission team members were searching for mission ideas when they came upon this one,

and it seemed like a good fit. She noted that Central Vermont Mission has been working in the area since 2011, when it formed right after the region was hit by Tropical Storm Irene. “This is ongoing even from then, and I think that might surprise a lot of people,” Gail remarked.

“When we say we’re going to volunteer in that area, they may think, ‘What has happened there recently?’ but it takes years and years to recover from disasters. At the beginning of a disaster, there are a lot of volunteers and a lot of money, and then that all dries up, but the need is still there.”

The group will be serving lowincome families and the elderly, helping with construction or remodeling and maintenance work. New this year, they are also going to be helping to feed the homeless in the area by preparing lunch and distributing it to them.

As for the breakfast, no reservations are required, but Gail recommends coming early because items sell out. “People can expect some really good food, and it’s just a really great place to come even if you’re by yourself or you’re a couple or you have a few friends that you get

Or, if you’re interested in mission work, even though our group is mainly people from our church, we’re certainly not against others joining us, so we are willing to share our experiences with people and invite them along or even to come to church if they feel like it.”

does not receive any municipal or state funding. Expenses at the field include completing the funding of the brick entrance restoration, which is approximately 95% funded, and covering the costs of continuous maintenance and improvements of the facility. The park includes a large pavilion, a small pavilion, basketball courts, football and baseball fields and a track. It is used by a variety of groups throughout the year, including CBAA baseball and softball teams, the Columbia High School girls’ softball team, Dayspring Christian Academy’s track team and the PA Gremlins traveling football team. Additionally, community members have reserved the facility for events such as a community Easter egg hunt, birthday parties, reunions, the National Night Out event and the Boy Scout can drive.

Gamby stated that the community celebration is the first in a series of

planned fundraisers for the field. At least two more bingos will be scheduled for this summer or fall. On Friday, Sept. 29, the inaugural Glatfelter Memorial Field golf outing will be held at Cool Creek Golf Club, with an 8 a.m. tee time.

She noted that Glatfelter Field has been the site of many memories for residents of Columbia and the surrounding area. “This is definitely a community site,” she explained, adding that the field is a spot full of nostalgia. “A lot of people grew up at this place. They played baseball when they were little, or they participated in other sports here. This event is a way for people to give back while also having fun.”
