Mayfest Will Bring Colonial Maytown to Life

Come to Mayfest on Saturday, May 2, and take a step back in time.

“We will be concentrating on Maytown in 1776 and what life was like here and who lived here,” said Mayfest chair Linda Good, who noted that the event will celebrate both the country’s 250th birthday as well as Maytown’s 266th birthday.

“Since Maytown is older than the USA, this year’s Mayfest will feature many activities that portray Maytown during the Revolutionary War period,” she stated. “Our historical scavenger hunt will focus on different houses in town and what they were used for. For example, there was a gunsmith, a house used for a prison, a tinsmith, etc. … Find out what Maytown was like in 1776!”

Mayfest will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Hope Runs From Mount Joy to Ghana

From Mount Joy to Ghana, an Arm of Hope stretches across continents to reach children in need. That connection will come to life locally on Saturday, May 2, when the Mount Joy-based nonprofit invites the community to step up and step out for its annual 5K. The event will be held at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., with the race kicking off at 9 a.m.

Greg Grove, who directs the race with Keith Franz, encouraged people to sign up for the event.

“It’s a great family-friendly event, flat, easy course with door prizes and a great cause,” he said. “All ages are welcome - walkers, runners, strollers, pets, everyone!”

Along with a variety of door prizes, baked goods will be presented to the top finishers in each age bracket.

The top male and top female overall finishers of the race, along

Youth Field Day Invites Kids to Get Outside

Great things happen when kids get outside. They can discover new skills, develop self-confidence, make new friends and, most of all, have fun.

Kids ages 10 to 15 are invited to the 31st annual Youth Field Day, organized by the Lancaster County Sportsmen For Youth. It will take place at the Milton Grove Sportsmen’s Club, 731 Milton Grove Road North, Elizabethtown, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 6.

“We encourage kids and their parents to come to our Youth Field Day if they want to experience a day of outdoor activities,” said Lynn Carruthers, a volunteer with the event. “The 10 stations they will get to experience for 35 minutes each may vary slightly year to year but are typically archery, canoeing, fishing, fly fishing, muzzle loading, trapping, 22 rifle, trap shooting, turkeys (and) wildlife education with the PA game commissioners and Raven Ridge Wildlife Rescue.”

The event is free to attend, no gear is needed and participants will all receive a free lunch. Parents are encouraged to accompany their child, but it’s not required.

While Youth Field Day is an opportunity for kids who don’t have a background in outdoor activities to experience the fun, it’s open to any youths in the age range, said Scott Deiter, who coordinates the canoeing.

“We can say that many kids that start at age 10 return each

Mayfest

“This year, Mayfest is being held in the square and the four blocks from the square each way,” Good said, noting that it will encompass North and South River streets, as well as East and West High streets, which will be closed to traffic.

Mayfest will feature more than 70 vendors, along with food trucks, a display of pillowcases and blankets from the Donegal Intermediate School (DIS) sewing club, children’s Colonial games and crafts, a food stand to benefit the Maytown Historical Society, a wedding ceremony, songs and dances from second-graders, a first-grade art contest display, a penny candy store for kids, a cake walk around the square, live music, live art and the traditional maypole dance by DIS students.

“The wedding will be a renewal of the vows of Anthony and Kathie Eshleman,” Good said. “They will be attended by their three grandchildren.”

Good noted that in 1776, Maytown was a busy place, home to

many businesses.

“Mayfest will feature many historical demonstrators and educators sharing their crafts and knowledge for all to see and experience,” she said. “A unique family scavenger hunt will help you discover the location and information about a place where Hessian prisoners were held, Maytown fur traders, a place where medical procedures were performed, a musket maker, a blacksmith, a flintknapper and more - all of them in Colonial Maytown.”

Good explained that the scavenger hunt will be history-themed, with trinkets to collect at each stop. People are encouraged to take the trinkets to the Trading Post for prizes and trading.

Mayfest is an annual event organized by and to benefit the Maytown Historical Society.

“Proceeds are used for storage needs for our new archive building and for general museum upkeep,” Good said.

Parking for Mayfest will be available outside of the aforementioned closed streets and at Legion Park, 20 N. King St., Maytown.

year for the next four or five years that they fall into the age range,” he shared. “And now, as we are in our 31st year, we are experiencing parents that come and tell us that they went through Youth Field Day and now they are there with their child.”

Carruthers noted that she learned about the event’s history from a magazine article written in 1999 by Charlie Youtz.

“He wrote, ‘The number of youth involved in outdoor activities has been declining for years,’” Carruthers said. “In 1991, the late Bob McWilliams, information and education specialist with the PA Game Commission, had an idea.”

He and 25 other sportsmen held a meeting in the northwest regional office of the Game Commission and organized a free, oneday interactive event for youths. Since then, the concept spread across the state. In October of 1995, a group of 70 people formed what is now the Lancaster County Sportsmen For Youth, and the first local Youth Field Day was held in June 1996. Last year, there were 22 Youth Field Days held over the summer throughout Pennsylvania.

Carruthers emphasized that the day would not be possible without the support of volunteers.

“These are people that love the outdoors and love to teach the kids how to love it too,” she said. “Many come from the sportsmen’s clubs in Lancaster County and have been volunteering since the Lancaster County Field Day was first held in 1996.”

Each year, the group also recruits new volunteers, including a participant now in his 20s who went through the program as a kid and now helps with either fly fishing or freshwater fishing. Certified instructors with the Canoe Club of Greater Harrisburg run the canoeing station, and game wardens operate the PA Game Commission station.

“And they have stories of kids who went through Youth Day and then became game wardens,” Carruthers remarked. “Many of the volunteers have stories from the day, stories of seeing a young child come alive with excitement after they did something at the station. The volunteer shares with others, and we all keep saying, ‘This is why we can keep coming every year and give it our all, just to see

young ones show excitement for an outdoor sport.’”

She added that the Lancaster County Youth Field Day is always held on the first Saturday of June, but the host sportsmen’s club is not announced until March of each year. The event is hosted by one of the four clubs that have a large pond.

The Youth Field Day is funded by donations from area sportsmen’s clubs, outdoor sporting goods stores and some local food companies.

“Also, a donation is given for free printing of pamphlets from a local printing company,” Carruthers said. “The companies and sportsmen’s clubs are not asking for recognition. They are doing it to help keep this goal alive, to let kids experience and love the outdoors.”

Along with a free lunch, kids will receive a goodie bag at the end of the day. Youth Field Day will be

held rain or shine, so participants should dress for the weather. Early registration is encouraged. Registration will close on Friday, June 5. If people register early but then cannot attend, they should update their registration by removing their name to make room for other participants.

To register, visit www .register-ed.com/events/ view/241923. For more information, see the group’s Facebook page by searching for “Lancaster County Sportsmen For Youth.”

Sweet strawberries, warm waffles and community service will be on the menu when Ruhl’s Church serves up its annual fundraising breakfast.

The church will host its all-youcan-eat breakfast on Saturday, May 2, from 6 to 10 a.m. or until sold out, at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.

Along with strawberries and waffles, the menu will also include pancakes, scrambled eggs and eggs to order, breakfast casseroles, bacon, sausages, home-fried potatoes and assorted beverages.

“All food will be prepared and served by the Mission Outreach Team members who will be participating in either of the mission trips happening this summer,” explained mission team member Gail Ruhl, who organizes the trips with her husband, Chuck. “Each year we choose a destination that has either been hit with a natural disaster or is in a community where the residents are not financially able to repair or upkeep their homes.”

She noted that this year is unique because the mission team is planning two mission trips for the first time.

“For several years now, some members of our core team of

volunteers have been requesting a mission trip to Guatemala to help at Kairos House. Our church spent many years serving with this organization in the past, and some of those who served there before were very interested in returning,” Gail said. “We knew that a mission trip to another country would not be for everyone, so we thought offering two mission trips would be a good idea. Fortunately, we have help with the planning of both trips.”

One mission team will serve the community of Charleston, W.Va., from Sunday to Saturday, June 21 to 27. That team will help with home repairs and improvements for elderly and low-income families. Another mission team will serve with Kairos Ministries in Guatemala City, Guatemala, from Saturday, July 4, to Sunday, July 12.

“This team will be helping to improve the living conditions for the residents of Kairos House, which is a home away from home for families who often travel great distances from small villages to the city for medical treatments for life-threatening illnesses, by repairing and replacing structural issues that will address safety concerns while providing a more comfortable, welcoming appearance to the house,” Gail said. “All proceeds from this breakfast will be used to

offset the cost of both mission trips, which includes building materials, transportation, meals and lodging.”

The Ruhls have been organizing and participating in mission trips for many years.

“The Mission Outreach Team from Ruhl’s Church consists of individuals from our church and throughout the community who are of like mind to spread the love of God through service to

others,” Gail commented. “We have worked together for many years completing various projects for congregation members, as well as people in our community. We have served together locally, nationally and now globally. We are thankful for our church family and community members who are faithful, generous supporters of our Mission Outreach Team. Their

with winners in the master’s brackets - for those over age 40will receive a handcrafted wooden trophy from Ghana, Grove said. A chicken barbecue will be available to purchase by donation so participants can take lunch home with them. The meal will include a chicken leg and thigh, a baked potato, a homemade roll and a whoopie pie. Pickup for the chicken barbecue will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the barbecue is open to members of the public even if they are not participating in the 5K. The chicken barbecue is available for preorder only by Friday, April 24. To order, visit www.armofhopein ghana.org/bbq.

The annual 5K is a fundraiser for the Arm of Hope camp in Ghana, which provides food, education and health care to children in need through weeklong camps for students of elementary and high school age. The camps provide an opportunity for children to get out of the slums of Ghana and have fun, all while learning about the love of Jesus.

“Arm of Hope changes lives,” Grove shared, noting that the July camp expects 1,100 campers this summer at a cost of approximately $60 per child.

“A team from the U.S. led by Cheryl and Mike Zimmerman - Cheryl is the U.S. director of Arm of Hope - goes every year to help with the two-week camp.”

Grove has experienced the power of the program firsthand.

“I have been to summer camp six times in the last 11 years, including last summer, and I have witnessed kids grow up and get involved as leaders as adults in Arm of Hope and their community,” he shared. “As I said, Arm of Hope changes lives. I have seen it.”

Online advance registration is requested for the 5K and will increase the chance of obtaining a race T-shirt, but race-day registration will also be accepted. The deadline for registering online is Friday, May 1. The cost to register is by donation. To register, visit www.arm ofhopeinghana.org/5k.

continual prayer and financial support is a blessing to us, our community and to all those we serve.”

She encourages people to come to the breakfast, noting that many attendees come back year after year for food and friendship.

“Our church strives to provide a relaxing, welcoming atmosphere for folks to fellowship together,” she said. “There will also be a chance for attendees to ask about our past or upcoming mission trips or to inquire about joining our mission team in future endeavors. It is also a great opportunity for people to support a worthwhile cause. Not everyone who appreciates the mission work our group does is able to join us in our efforts, but attending and supporting our fundraisers gives people the opportunity to walk alongside us as we serve others.”
