n Saturday, April 23, the streets of Marietta will be full of artists in action. They’ll be taking part in a quick draw competition as part of River Towns Plein Air 2022, an art event that focuses on pieces created outdoors, or “en plein air.”

Marietta Art Alive! is the organizer of the plein air event that debuted last year. “(The quick draw is) open to anyone who is participating in the plein air competition as well as to anyone age 18 or older.” Participants may sign up for the quick

The plein air event will wrap up with a three-day exhibit of the completed work, held in the rear building of Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St. It will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 29; from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 30; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 1. Members of the public are invited to view the art and vote for their favorite for the

It’s been said that there’s no crying in baseball, but you know what there is in church softball? Camaraderie, kinship and a little bit of competition. For decades, the Donegal Area Church Softball League (DACSL) has been offering players a chance to get out on the field and indulge in a game they love. At its peak, the league featured 28 teams from towns in the region, including Elizabethtown, Mount Joy, Hershey, Middletown and Mountville. Today, the league is composed of nine teams, which play a 13-week regular season followed by two weeks of playoffs. The season runs from mid-April through July. See Softball pg 2

draw online at www.mariettaart alive.com/qd, or they can register in person from 8 to 10 a.m. on April 23. “The streets will be closed, and they’ll set up their easels in the street,” Hines noted. “Beginning at 10 a.m., they’ll have two hours to finish their painting.” The quick draw is just one part of River Towns Plein Air 2022, which will feature 60 artists painting in outdoor areas throughout the river towns from April 18 through Wednesday, April 27. “Last year, we had specific sites for the artists to set up and the public to come out and watch them work, but we found that the artists prefer to find their own spots or paint something that caught their eye,” Hines stated. “The quick draw will give the public a chance to see the artists at work.” On Sunday, April 24, the event will feature a family activity spotlighting the Japanese art of gyotaku, or fish painting. “We’re partnering with the Susquehanna Waldorf School,” Hines said. “Traditionally, this art form is done with live fish, but we’ll be using rubber fish. Kids will receive a free T-shirt while supplies last, and they’ll print their fish right on the shirt.” The event will be held from

“Church softball is a little more relaxed in terms of competitiveness compared to a rec league,” said John Grosh Jr., president of DACSL. “The players just want to enjoy a fun game of softball. Sometimes, they aren’t the very best softball players, but it doesn’t matter.” While the league is not technically considered coed, since there are separate regulations for coed teams, it does welcome and encourage female players. “We also allow players as young as 12 years old,” Grosh noted. “It’s a good mix of players, and I like that part of it.” Games are played on two fields at the Armstrong World Industries campus, 1507 River Road, Marietta. One of

the fields is named for Chuck Jackson, a former Elizabethtown Area High School teacher and active member of the softball league who served as league president for many years and pitched on the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren team. “I think of him as ‘Mr. Donegal Softball,’” Grosh stated. Grosh, who has been president of the league since 2004, began playing church softball in the 1970s with the Mount Calvary Church team in Elizabethtown. He moved away from the area for several years, but upon his return, he became a member of another church and today plays on the Hershey Free Church team. Although this season’s teams are already set, Grosh noted that the league is always looking for new players for upcoming seasons. “I would love to have more teams,” he said. “Church softball leagues everywhere have gotten smaller over the past 20 years, but I’d love to see this one grow.” He encourages people to come out to see a game and noted that spectators will be treated to a game played by people who truly love the sport. “Because these are church teams, you get players with no foul language, and players are careful about displays of emotion and anger,” Grosh said. “We’re interested in fellowship as much as we are in softball. A lot of the players know players on the other teams, and they feel friendly with these guys. These games are a chance to come out to have a good time with people you’ve known for a long time.” A schedule of games can be found at www.dacsl.net. LANCASTER LANDFILL Lancaster Landfill, LLC is providing notice that a Major Permit Modification Application will be filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) Southcentral Regional Office in April 2022. This Application is being submitted to permit the acceptance of select residual waste in the landfill that can be used as an alternate operational cover which requires revision of the Waste Analysis and Classification Plan. Additionally, minor changes are being made to update the Contingency Plan. The Landfill is located in Mount Joy Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Copies of the application have previously been forwarded to the appropriate municipality, county and adjacent property owners. This public notification is being provided in accordance with Chapter 271.141(a) of the Pennsylvania Municipal Waste Regulations. As stated above, this request includes the use of select residual waste materials as alternate operational cover, including recycled paper deinking sludge, foams, auto shred fluff material, non-petroleum contaminated soil, soils with different texture classifications, processed construction and demolition waste, and Posi-Shell (a cement-water-fiber product). These waste streams have been previously approved by the PADEP as alternate operational cover materials under the design alternative procedures in §271.231. Lancaster Landfill has been designed and constructed with a dual-liner system meeting the Subtitle D criteria for a Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Landfill, and as such was permitted to accept Module-1 residual waste for disposal in the original permit dating back to 1992. To be clear, Lancaster Landfill intends to remain a construction and demolition (C&D) facility. We are simply seeking the ability to use pre-approved residual waste streams as cover to help support the landfill operations and minimize the use of clean soils that consume landfill airspace. In accordance with §271.141(a)(2) the host municipality and county may submit comments to the PADEP within 60 days of receipt of the Application, recommending conditions upon, revisions to and approval or disapproval of the permit, with the specific reasons described in the comments. A copy of the Application will be available for review by the public at the PADEP Southcentral Regional Office, 909 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, PA 17110. Requests to review the Application can be made by calling 717-705-4700. Fees for copying may be charged by the PADEP. The PADEP will accept and consider comments from the public during the permit review. Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce, 62 E. Main St., Suite 1, Mount Joy, will award three scholarships to Mount Joy students, students of Chamber members, or members who are continuing their education. Residency outside Mount Joy is permitted for students of Chamber members or students who are Chamber members. Two of the scholarships are for $1,000. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school student, and the second will be awarded to a continuing education student. A $500 scholarship will be awarded based mainly on the student’s volunteer time in the community; this scholarship is given in honor of Dorothy Metzler and her support to nonprofits in the Mount Joy

The Indians scored two more in the following frame, only to see Central cut it to 8-7. Donegal’s second six-running of this game came in the fifth inning. The Barons’ comeback bid fell short. Mackison, Garber, and Colwell did their job in the middle of the lineup. Mackison went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, scoring two herself. Garber doubled and drove in a run. TENNIS With their 5-2 victory over Elco on Friday, April 8, the Indians showed a great deal of grit as they rebounded from a 7-0 loss to L-L League foe Lancaster Country Day earlier that week. In the victory over Elco, the Indians held a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches. Austin Barrick and Jackson Buston lost a close 8-4 match at number three doubles - this after Akilan Murugesan and Jacob Erb had an 8-4 victory at number one doubles followed by Landon Keller and Conner Hyle taking the sec-
ond doubles 8-2. Murugesan also started a win streak in singles, taking number one singles 6-2, 6-1. Erb and Keller both won their respective singles matches 6-2, 6-0. Donegal followed this with a 7-0 triumph over AnnvilleCleona, improving to 8-2 on the year (6-1 league). Murugesan and Erb faced a tough challenge from their number one doubles opponents Si Domenic and Samuel Domenic. The Donegal duo prevailed 9-7. Keller and Hyle posted an 8-3 win while Barrick and fellow senior Brett Sauder prevailed 8-6 at number three doubles. In the singles matches, Donegal made it a straight sets sweep from Murugesan (6-1, 6-0) to Erb (6-1, 7-5) to Keller (6-2, 6-4) to Hyle (6-4, 6-1).

“This is the most fun you’ll ever have in the library - and the loudest,” said Kevin Engle, describing A Taste of Western Lancaster County, which will be held at the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., on Friday, April 29. “There is no ‘shushing’ that night.” The library and the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown will host the event from 4:30 to 9 p.m. “We’ll have 20-plus vendors, featuring local restaurants, breweries, wineries and other food purveyors,” noted Engle, Rotary chair for the event. “They’ll be set up on all three floors of the library, and the idea is to get a taste, a sample of what they offer.” Participating vendors will include Fuego Latino, The Gathering Place, Black Gryphon, Isaac’s Restaurant & Deli, McCleary’s Pub, Gene Wenger’s Meats & Fine Foods, Funk Brewing, MooDuck Brewery and Cox Brewing Company. “We invite anybody in this region of the county to participate as a vendor,” Engle explained. “It’s anywhere
would go to eat, and that could be out of the county as well.” The public is invited to vote for their favorites, and prizes will be awarded based on the most votes received for best entrée, best appetizer, best dessert, best beverage and best in show. The winners will receive a plaque to display at their establishment and will be recognized at a banquet on a future date. Live music will be performed throughout the evening from Josh Leik, Don Grabowski, Selene and a quartet of students from Elizabethtown Area High School. This is the 14th year for the event, which has grown significantly over the years, said Deb Drury, chief executive officer of the library. “The first year was very small, but the response from the community has been amazing, and it continues to be,” she stated, noting that the event raises money for both the library and the Rotary Club. “This is a significant fundraiser for both (groups).” Funds from the event will

Hope’s Haven Plans Open House Hope’s Haven Horse Rescue and Youth Camp, 114 Kissel Barrick Road, Bainbridge, will host an open house on Saturday, April 23, from 1 to 4 p.m. In the case of rain, the event will take place on Saturday, April 30. Hope’s Haven is a faith-centered ministry, where rescued horses can connect with children dealing with conflicts in their lives. The horses and children receive encouragement and guidance from a mentor with the goal of experiencing healing, acceptance and restored hope. Community members may stop by to meet the volunteer staff members and mentors, along with the program horses, which are former rescue horses. There will be opportunities to learn more about the program and volunteer opportunities in fundraising,
mentoring, landscaping and IT support. Hope’s Haven apparel and light refreshments will be available for purchase, and attendees may enter giveaway drawings for baskets. Since the formation of Hope’s Haven in March 2018, more than 40 children

Wiederseim To Sell Collection Of Ed And Carol Stoudt Of Stoudts’ Black Angus Brewery and Pub Sale To Take Place In Phoenixville On July 24
This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box. Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.
The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively
for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel
running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at Wiederseim’s facility, located at 1041 W. Bridge St., Phoenixville, Pa. EUGENE “GENE” MCCOMSEY Surrounded by his loving family, Eugene H. “Gene” McComsey, 72, of Mount Joy, passed away on Monday, March 28, 2022, at his home. Known as “dad,” “pap,” “coach” or just “McComsey” - Gene has inspired all of us to simply “do our best” - on and off the softball field. Gene showed his “best” to his immediate family when he was diagnosed with stage-4 lung cancer in 2018. When many may crumble or fall apart with such an unforgiving diagnosis, Gene was practical, stoic and brave. He embraced the facts and made a clear, conscious decision that he would quietly fight and live out his days with as much buoyancy for life, humor and normalcy as he always had. During this private journey, he continued; to play basketball with his friends, whom he was so fond of, gardening, working on tasks at the cabin with his brother, Richard, (beloved Uncle Pie), helping his granddaughter with afterschool activities and math homework, walking and talking in the mountains with his daughters and Ruby (grand-puppy), and riding around in the VW, and acting like a young kid with the love of his life, Diane (Dolly). His passion to coach softball and mentor hundreds of young women throughout his career, was second to none. Inspired by his daughter Gwendolyn, Gene stepped onto the field 35-years ago…and never looked back. His coaching career included a variety of Mount Joy Athletic Association teams: The Fillies (pee wee), pre-teen and Mount Joy Blue (teeners). Additionally, he coached Hempfield Black Knights (teener), Mosby’s Pub (women’s league), Lancaster Catholic Crusaders (varsity), and most recently, the varsity team for the Donegal Indians. Gene was a graduate of Hempfield High School, class of 1967. He retired from Alcoa in 2009. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Ludwig M. and Ada (Reikard) McComsey. Gene was the husband of Diane L. (Kryder) McComsey with whom he celebrated 52 years of marriage. Surviving in addition to his wife, Diane, are two daughters; Cynthia L. McComsey of Maytown and Gwendolyn L. McComsey of Lancaster; a granddaughter, Soul L. McComsey of Lancaster; and a brother, Richard C. McComsey of Columbia. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert E. McComsey. A public Celebration of Life service will take place in May with the date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gene McComsey Memorial Scholarship Fund. The annual scholarship will benefit a DHS softball player with continuing education.
