Find resources at the Community Building Blocks Expo

“They say if you want to succeed, it’s who you know,” said Deb Schleh, extolling the benefits of networking. “We believe it’s what you know and who you know.” Schleh, a member of the Friends of Donegal, said that’s the motivation behind the Community Building Blocks Expo, an event designed to introduce the community to services available to everyone.

The expo will be held on Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. along Delta and Henry streets and inside the reception center at Sheetz Funeral Home, 16 E. Main St., Mount Joy. A rain date is scheduled for Saturday, May 6.

As Schleh explained, the idea for the expo came from a community dinner held at the end of a Getting Ahead class offered by Friends of Donegal, a nonprofit created to be a one-stop shop to help close the gaps between needs and services in the community. “At the dinner, we invited people in from different organizations in the community,”

she recalled, noting that Getting Ahead is a class designed to help people get ahead financially rather than just getting by. “Part of Getting Ahead is not only to help participants gain skills, but also to give back to the community. Out of the community dinner came the idea, ‘W hy not do this on a larger scale?’”

The expo will feature a wide variety of nonprofit organizations and businesses, all geared toward providing services ranging from financial support to housing. Members of the Mount Joy Borough Police Department, EMS and fire department will be on-site as well.

Nancy Stehman, a member of the expo committee, said the Getting Ahead class opened her eyes to community resources. “I realized I could make connections and build my social capital through networking,” she stated. “People might not realize there is free medical care. People might not have a good relationship with the police. Coming to the expo will give them the opportunity to come out and talk to the police, to learn about programs and services that could benefit them.”

Mount Joy will hold National Day of Prayer event

Experience the power of prayer at the Mount Joy National Day of Prayer. The event will be held on Thursday, May 4, at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. It will begin with breakfast from 7 to 7:30 a.m., followed by a program and prayers from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.

“This is a day for the Mount Joy community,” said Nancy Shonk, a member of the organizing team for the event. “We’ll be praying for churches, for families, for education, See Prayer pg 2

Girl on fire

W hen Emma Schneider twirls a baton, she’s on fire. That is, her batons are on fire - literally. Emma, a junior at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), is a twirler with the school marching band and also competes on a national level, showcasing her ability to combine twirling up to three fire batons with acrobatics.

“I have been twirling baton since I was about 5 years old,” said Emma, noting that she began twirling at Paula’s School of Baton in Mount Joy. “I knew I wanted to twirl when I saw the sparkly costumes everyone got to wear.” She

joined the EAHS marching band as a sixth-grader. “Usually, they don’t allow twirlers in the band until they are in high school,” Emma noted, but the band needed a twirler, and majorette instructor Heather Hartsough noticed something special in Emma.

“Emma is super talented,” Hartsough stated. “Her showmanship is fantastic, and you can tell she loves being out there performing for people.”

Soon after joining the band, Emma decided to try twirling with fire. “I wanted to do fire baton because it’s fun and different from regular batons,” she explained. “It’s also something that everybody See F ire pg 8

Music duo SweetLife will perform at the program, followed by guest speakers Steve and Jeremy Blount. The father and son, owners of GCM Inc. in Mount Joy, will talk about the ways God has worked through their business. Richard Vaughn, pastor of Mount Joy Church of God, will pray for churches. She encourages everyone to come to the event, noting, “Come with an open heart and an open mind, and you will feel the difference prayer can make.”

Shonk emphasized that the day would not be possible without the help of the event team. Joining Shonk on the team are Tracy Miller, Stephen and Brooksyne Weber, Marion Young, Chad Habecker, Chris Silvestri and Bunny O’Hare.

Shonk expressed her gratitude to the team members but added that she’d love to see even more community members included. “I would like for the churches of Mount Joy to become more involved in this event,” she said. “If the churches all work together, we can make a difference.”

“The program moves right along, with one person going after the next,” Shonk said, explaining that the event is scheduled to allow people to attend and still get to work on time.

She noted that the Mount Joy National Day of Prayer is more important than ever.

“Our country needs prayers,” she stated. “If we can pray for Mount Joy, to keep Mount Joy a great place to live, work and play, we’ve accomplished

Expo frompg 1

Along with information tables, the expo will feature activities for people of all ages, Stehman said, adding, “W e’ll have fun and games, too. We’ll have food trucks. It’s a family event.”

A silent auction of items, including paintings by a local artist, themed baskets and gift cards to local businesses, will help cover the operational costs of Getting Ahead and its follow-up class, Staying Ahead.

Christina Helfrick, vice president of Friends of Donegal, explained that both programs are open to anyone in the community who’s interested. “We’ve grown the program over the years to focus on interactivity with the community and building bridges,” she stated. “Part of the expo is about building bridges between community members and organizations.”

There will be an opportunity to sign up for a Getting Ahead or Staying Ahead class at the expo. For more information on Friends of Donegal or the expo, visit https://friendsofdonegal.org or search for “Friends of Donegal” on Facebook.

Spring is a busy season for many of us, so take a load off your plate and make plans to pick up dinner on Friday, May 5. Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community will host a drive-through chicken barbecue dinner in the parking lot of LCBC, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim, from 4 to 6 p.m. The meal will include Peters’ Barbecue fire-grilled chicken, gourmet cheesy potatoes, savory baked beans with bacon,

a dinner roll with butter, Mt. Hope’s famous coleslaw and a dessert. Proceeds from the dinner will benefit Mt. Hope, a 50bed skilled nursing facility and rehabilitation center providing care for seniors and people with disabilities regardless of their ability to pay.

“Most residents at Mt. Hope do not have financial resources to cover the cost of their care, and a growing gap of about $150 a day exists between what a resident is able to pay and the cost of daily care,” explained

Kris Wilson, director of advancement. “That’s why these fundraisers are so very important for Mt. Hope and

the care we provide. Any gift to Mt. Hope is appreciated and makes a huge difference.”

Wilson noted that a new opportunity has been created to support Mt. Hope on an ongoing basis. “This spring is the perfect time to join in a monthly partnership with Mt. Hope,” she stated. “We’re kicking off our monthly giving opportunities and welcoming new growth, which brings exciting energy and life to Mt. Hope. Our monthly giving program enables Mt. Hope to finance our day-to-day activities and cover daily operating expenses.”

Wilson emphasized that the facility is growing in several ways, with new programming, building upgrades and new staff members. “Our care team is growing with the addition of two excellent team members: Michelle Weber, a registered nurse and director of nursing, as well as Steph Book, occupational therapist and therapy program manager. Both have over 22 years of experience in their respective jobs.”

Mt. Hope’s capital campaign continues, providing funding for remodeling the first-floor nurses’ station, the main entrance and resident common areas as well as

Expressing creativity through the arts

upgrades to the building’s HVAC system. New programming for residents includes guest vocal performances, Ladies’ Tea Time, Men’s YouTube Club, an indoor garden cart on wheels and outings to community events. Proceeds from the chicken barbecue will help support all of the programming at Mt. Hope.

Preorders for the chicken barbecue will be saved under the name provided when ordered. To preorder or for more information, call Wilson at 717-682-8026 or email advancement@mthope nazarene.org by Sunday, April 30. Extra meals will be available on-site while supplies last. No handling of money will occur on the day of food pickup. When picking up meals, customers may put payment in a drop-box in the form of exact change or checks made payable to “Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community.” The cost of the meal is $17. Additional donations for resident care needs will be accepted, and a tax receipt will be sent. For more information on giving opportunities, contact Wilson.

When Jill Thomasson decided to start her own performing arts company, she took inspiration from Zechariah 4:10: Don’t despise small beginnings. ExHaLTT Performing Arts Academy began in January of 2021 with eight students, but the program has been growing steadily ever since.

The organization, based in Elizabethtown, will host a silent auction on Saturday, April 29, from 6 to 9 p.m. at 222 S. Market St. Proceeds will help Thomasson raise funds as she prepares to expand her class offerings and renovate her new home space in the ballroom on the second floor of The Marriage Hub, 18 N. Market St., Elizabethtown. The auction will include baskets, gift cards to local restaurants and weeklong vacation home stays.

For almost 15 years, Thomasson was a dance teacher at the Milton Hershey School. She left that job to pursue ExHaLTT, which stands for Expressing Hearts and Lives To Touch. “I truly believe lives can be changed by the arts,” she stated. “My mission is coming from a deep place in me to reach into

people’s lives, whether they are a viewer of the arts or a participant, and change their lives with the arts.”

Her performing arts academy is a faith-based nonprofit organization that has been offering classes from several locations in Elizabethtown as Thomasson gets ready to open her permanent studio this fall. ExHaLTT operates under the tagline, “Where the arts thrive, the soul comes alive.” Thomasson offers classes in all styles of dance for 4-year-olds through adults.

“I believe that the arts lead to the development of confidence,” Thomasson shared. “I want my studio to be a place where kids can grow and engage in a safe space. I want it to be a place for everyone to find a way to create something beautiful and impactful. We all need some way to navigate through the challenges of life, and we all

need a place of release. The arts help us intellectually, physically and emotionally.”

ExHaLTT students will present a spring performance on Saturday, May 27, at 7 p.m. in Leffler Chapel and Performance Center at Elizabethtown College. Thomasson encourages people to come to the performance to see what the studio is all about.

She will also offer a musical theater camp this summer for children in fourth grade through rising seniors. The campers will present “The Little Mermaid Jr.” Auditions will be held on Tuesday, July 11, and the camp will run on weekdays from Monday, July 24, through Thursday, Aug. 3. A performance will be held on Aug. 3 at 6 p.m. at Elizabethtown Area High School, where the camp will take place.

As she looks to the future, Thomasson sees only bright

things ahead. “I want to offer music, dance, theater and art to serve Elizabethtown and the surrounding communities,” she said. “My vision for the studio is for it to have a feeling of an arts mecca, with something for everyone.”

The Donegal track and field squads dominated Lancaster Mennonite in a Section Three meet at Donegal on Tuesday, April 11. The boys’ team defeated LMH by a 137-8 score while the girls won 135-8. In each event - for both boys and girls, whether relay or individualthe first-place finisher wore a Donegal uniform.

In the 800- and 1,600-meter events Molly Myers claimed first place. She was also part of the 4x400 relay team that included Sydney Snyder, Anna Brubaker and McKyla Bantum, who also captured the 400-m

event.

Snyder also went on to take the triple jump with a 31-foot6.5 measure. Brubaker, who won the 200-m, also took a field event - the high jump at 4-6.

Kathryn Fernald, the 3,200m winner, finished second in the 1,600 behind Molly Myers.

Brubaker joined Peyton Mansfield, Rayahna Clerico, and 100-m winner Sophia Floyd for the 4x100 relay victory.

Speaking of relays, the 4x800 quartet was made up of Emma Myers, Marleigh Ballard, Kara Nissly, and Kendall Finicle.

In the hurdles, while Addison

Houck finished second in the 300-m hurdles, she won the 100 hurdles. Hannah Slobozien, who also earned first in the long jump (14-1) was the carbon copy of Houck, earning first in the 300 and second in the high hurdles.

Nya Bantum was the star of the throws, winning the shot put (33-2.75) the discus (77-10) and the javelin with an 81-1 heave.

The foursome of Ayomikun Akinrinwoye, Nikita Galkin, Noah Hinkel and Andrew Myers claimed the boys’ 4x400. Hinkel came through with an 11-foot pole vault for a win there.

Dashing off with the 100and 200-m first-place finishes was Brody Bonham. He then teamed up with Akinrinwoye, Davion Wagstaff and long jump winner Chad Rambal for a triumphant 4x100.

Jackson Brody swept the hurdling events for Donegal.

Brandon Marcello, who outran the competition in the 3,200, joined Dylan Lenhart, Micah Brydon, and 800-m winner Braden Bristline for a win in the 4x800 relay.

In more field events, Evan Donough took the triple and high jump. Caleb Kendig won the shot put (45-10) and the javelin (129-9) while J.L. Towers tossed the discus 119-9 for first place.

BASEBALL

The Indians came out of a brief funk by blanking Octorara 5-0 Wednesday, April 12 in a Lancaster-Lebanon League baseball game at Mt. Joy.

Jaden Fabian earned the victory as the starter. The Braves managed only one hit on the day as the Indians improved to 4-3 on the year (2-2 league).

The previous afternoon, Donegal came up empty in a Section Three game at Cocalico. Eagles pitcher Jarrett Weaver pitched five shutout innings,

allowing three walks and two hits. It was the third loss in a row for the Indians.

“Three-game skid,” Donegal coach Jeff Hartman said. “Brock Hammaker pitched lights out against Cocalico. We had one bad defensive inning and couldn’t get anything going offensively.

“We need to start stringing more quality at-bats and dictating action offensively,” continued the coach. “It’s time to put it together. We have the kids that can do it.”

SOFTBALL

Coming off the previous week’s 13-1 defeat of Manheim Central, the Donegal softball team stayed on the offensive, scoring 15 runs in a shutout of Cocalico on Tuesday, April 11.

Cara Biesecker started and went only two innings in the 10-run mercy rule victory. She allowed one hit and struck out two. Natalie Colwell also struck out two in her one inning of relief, yielding one walk.

The 15-0 victory featured three home runs by the Indians. Biesecker, who went 2-for3, slugged a home run, and drove in five runs - all out of the leadoff spot. She improved her batting average to .500 on the year.

Bella Mackison also homered as did Grace Graham, who

raised her batting average to .727.

Biesecker, Coldwell, Mackison, Graham, Esther Myers each had two hits. Ruth Myers stroked a double among her three hits on the day. She also scored two runs. Madison Coble went 1-for-1 with an RBI double.

The Indians improved to 6-1 on the year.

TENNIS

The doubles pairings worked brilliantly for the Donegal boys’ tennis team in an L-L League match on Wednesday, April 12 versus visiting Octorara.

Akilan Murugesan and Landon Keller opened with an 8-2 victory at number one doubles.

Noah Rohrer and Alex Monchik grabbed the second doubles 8-3 while James Turbedsky and Jackson Butson held on for an 8-4 win at number three doubles.

The Indians went on to defeat the Braves 7-0, claiming the four singles matches.

At number one singles, Murugesan posted 6-0, 6-0 victories. Keller won the second singles 6-0, 6-1.

Bo Moose at number three and Rohrer at number four singles both posted 6-2, 6-1 victories.

The team improved to 5-3 on the year (3-2 league).

loves to watch.” She admits she was scared at first, but after a little practice, she was brave enough to add a second and third baton, despite a little protest from her parents, Scott and Michelle Schneider of Elizabethtown. “My dad did say he would never let me twirl two or three batons, but I ended up twirling them,” Emma said with a laugh. Although there are risks associated with her talent, Emma said she’s only had a few minor injuries, typically when she has burned herself on the hot metal shaft of the baton.

Along with twirling, Emma incorporates what she calls “acro-like skills” into her routines. These range from walkovers to side and front aerials. “I have taken tumbling lessons with gymnastic coaches to help improve my tumbling,” she remarked. “Adding tumbling into routines kind of adds that ‘wow’ factor and is not

something that every twirler can do.”

Emma said baton twirling has opened up a world of opportunities for her, from traveling to competitions as far away as Tennessee and Georgia to teaching younger kids how to twirl. She twirls at school football games and at numerous community events, and she competes nationally through Paula’s School of Baton with the Drum Majorettes of America on the elite level.

As she looks toward the future, Emma said she hopes to continue twirling for a college marching band, and she noted that she’ll never tire of wowing a crowd. “The audience in the stands at football games goes crazy when I juggle three fire batons,” she said. “There is no better feeling than to have parents, students and even kids from the opposing team cheering for you and complimenting your performance when you come off.”
