Return Trip - PA Family Travel Fair Is Back endy Royal, editor of Where & When Pennsylvania and organizer of the fourth annual PA Family Travel Fair, knows that if you want to interest families, you need to appeal to children. With that in mind, Royal has lined up a balloon magic show, a few lovable mascots, reptiles, and a special passport game with a prize designed to make children smile for this year’s fair. The fair, which was first held in 2018, was held virtually in 2020 and canceled in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions. For 2022, the free event will include exhibitors, amusements, food trucks, and opportunities to

The return of the annual PA Family Travel Fair will offer opportunities to see mascots, experience magic, and even meet a few Keystone State cowboys.
There is power in a pair of pants, strength in a shirt and joy in a jacket. Over the past 50 years, Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) has provided financial support around the world through its MCC Thrift shop network. To date, MCC Thrift shops have contributed more than $250 million to help people in need. The first MCC Thrift shop opened in 1972 in Manitoba, Canada. Since then, the network

In Lancaster County and just outside the county, there are seven MCC Thrift shops: Columbia Re-Uzit Shop, Country Gift & Thrift Shoppe in Gap, Main Street Closet in Willow Street, Mount Joy Gift & Thrift, ReUzit on State in Ephrata, Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland and Morgantown ReUzit Shoppe. Last year, these stores raised more than $1.6 million for MCC’s ministries. “The first MCC Thrift shop to open in Lancaster County was the Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland in 1976,” said Roland Anye, thrift shop coordinator for MCC East Coast. “Mount Joy Gift & Thrift and Columbia ReUzit Shop have been operational since 1977 and 1978 respectively.” As Anye explained, shopping at an MCC Thrift store benefits both the buyer and the recipient of MCC funds. Shoppers can pick up clothing, housewares and furniture for a bargain, while their purchases provide support on a global scale. After a minimal portion of the proceeds is used to keep the stores in operation, most of the money raised is donated to MCC. “Donations from the thrift shops are designated to ‘where needed most,’” Anye said, explaining that the funds are used to support domestic and international work of MCC. MCC partners with other organizations to provide care kits to prisoners, agriculture education to farmers and peaceful conflict resolution education, as well as many other initiatives in the more than 40 countries where MCC works, Anye noted. Deb King, national thrift shop coordinator for MCC U.S., emphasized that shopping at MCC Thrift shops can also have a positive impact on the environment by reducing waste and supporting climate sustainability. “By reducing the number of new items they purchase, shoppers can have a positive impact on the environment, keep clothing out of landfills and reduce the excess use of resources needed to make new clothing,” she said. To help celebrate MCC Thrift’s 50th anniversary, the organization is holding the Thifty 50 Challenge, said Laura Pauls-Thomas, communications and donor relations associate for MCC East

Jacob Erb and Landon Keller, who won the first doubles by an 8-3 count, also went on to win the number one and number two singles, respectively. At number one, Erb won 6-0, 6-0. Keller also took his match in straight sets - 6-0, 6-1. Conner Hyle and fellow senior Austin Barrick won their doubles match 8-3 and followed their teammates’ trend of taking their respective singles matches. Hyle took the number three 6-1, 6-3 while Barrick won his match 6-1, 6-1. Jackson Butson and Brett Sauder proved to be a winning pair at number three doubles, winning 8-4. There were a few close battles on Wednesday at Donegal where Lancaster Country Day won a 7-0 match. Hyle fought tooth and nail with Diez Villarino of the Cougars at number one singles. Villarino finally prevailed 7-5, 7-6 (3). Keller had a tough first set against Carson Weigle at number two singles, falling short 6-4. Barrick and Butson played well at number three doubles before yielding to Christian Hoin and Chandler King in an 8-4 final.

Like many people, Bob Rudy watched the events unfolding in Ukraine and wanted to help. “I wanted to fly over there and carry children and pets to safety,” he recalled saying to his wife, Debra, while watching the news one evening. “This obviously wasn’t a brilliant decision, so my wife suggested using the talents and resources I have right here at home to help out.” Inspired by his love for music and cars, Rudy organized Cruisin’ for Ukraine. The event will be held at Root’s Country Market and Auction, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim, on Saturday, April 23. Although Rudy had the idea, he knew he needed help to make it happen. “Putting a car show together isn’t something an individual can do,” he noted, adding that he recruited his fellow members of a local car club to help. “I couldn’t possibly do it without my brothers and sisters in the Lan-
Registration for the show will be by donation and will take place at the event. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., and dash plaques will be given to the first 200 vehicles registered. More than 30 trophies will be awarded in the “Anything on Wheels” category, based on the highest amount of donations submitted, and all proceeds will be donated to the Mennonite Central Committee to help the people of Ukraine. The event is a family show, and children are encouraged to enter their own vehicles, including pedal cars or Power Wheels. Family pets will also be included in the festivities, with trophies for the three highest donations in both the kids’ and pet categories. The J.C. Fisher Band will perform from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The presentation of trophies will take place at 2 p.m. Rudy acknowledged the support of Root’s Market for allowing the event to take place on-site and noted that a

variety of the market’s vendors will be available during the show. Rudy encouraged participants to show their support for the Ukrainian people by displaying flags, signs and banners. An additional trophy will be awarded for the entry that shows the most support. Acknowledging the help he’s received in putting together a big event in a short amount of time, Rudy recalled evidence of divine intervention. He connected with someone on Facebook who was giving away trophies, which Rudy plans to retrofit for this event. On his way to pick them up in Mary-
land, he passed a church. “It was so beautiful and at first, I thought it was a mosque,” he remembered. “Then I saw the sign. It was the St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. That was another sign to me that I was doing the right thing in organizing the car show.” In the event of rain, the show will be postponed to Saturday, April 30, and information will be posted on the Cruisin’ for Ukraine Facebook page as well as on Rudy’s internet radio station at www.mypetradio.com. Tom and Rosemarie Daly, owners of the Country Table Restaurant, 720740 E. Main St., Mount Joy, have decided to close the restaurant and sell the real estate due to their retirement. The family restaurant will officially close its doors on Saturday, April 16, after 22 years in business. The Dalys reported that they had searched for a family to buy the business, but they had not found a successor. The Bake Shoppe will continue to operate on Mondays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and First Citizens Bank will also remain open. The Bake Shoppe has been independently operated by the Dalys’ son and daughter-in-law, Tom Jr. and Jessica Daly, since May 2017. The restaurant space will be available for lease, and the whole property is available for purchase. The property is being listed by High Associates Ltd. The Dalys said their retirement years will include spending time together as well as with their children and 10 grandchildren.
