as “Derby,” has been a fixture at Manheim Central High School for the past 50 years, having served as a teacher, coach, trainer and athletic director. He has coached wrestling, cross-country and football, in addition to being the administrator of all athletic activities at Manheim Central.

Gramola was named Official of the Year by the Lancaster Football Chapter in both 1995 and 2008. He is a 41-year member of the PIAA as a football and basketball official and has worked in numerous leagues.

T h e L a n c a s t e r C h a p t e r, National R ailway Historical Society (NRHS), which aims to preserve history and railroad artifacts, as well as educate the public about railroading and its history, is in the middle of celebrating its 90th anniversary.

According to a histor y of the Lancaster Chapter, NRHS, provided by chapter historian Linda Himpsl, it began in 1934 when a few young railroad and trolley enthusiasts met in an old trolley in Neffsville, forming the Lancaster Railway & Locomotive Historical Society.

In 1935, the group merged with the Interstate Trolley Club and other organizations to form the NRHS. The Lancaster Chapter was the first charter organized in the NRHS, launching on Oct. 13, 1935.

Today, chapter meetings are held in the 1882 freight station in Christiana, which was restored by the chapter in 1998.

Members, who come from various backgrounds, all share a love of railroading. “Most people have an interest in railroads, history or just trains in general.

Very few of us actually worked for the railroad,” noted Steve Himpsl, second director. “Some have model trains. They are avid collectors.”

“Some have fathers or grandfathers who worked the railroad,” added Linda.

Last October, chapter members and invited guests celebrated the milestone during a chapter meeting at the freight station where they enjoyed cake and ice cream and a display of

athy Anderson is hoping her children’s book “The Green Bean Time Machine” will give readers some food for thought. It’s geared toward picky eaters ages 4 to 8.

“As an Integrative Nutrition health coach, I have worked with many clients who are interested in growing in their health and fitness,” said Kathy, who lives in Rapho Township. “Many are parents with young children, and the topic of picky eating often comes up during sessions.”

She shared tips, tricks and advice from a health coach perspective in sessions but realized she could turn the information into a book, creating adventures designed to encourage kids to grow in their own health and wellness journeys by eating more fruits and vegetables.

“The Green Bean Time Machine” follows the story of 5-year-old twins Billy and Bailey as they travel to the prehistoric era in a time machine.

“Without giving away too many details, the twins meet up with a very special dinosaur friend, help the dinosaur town and discover that bravery doesn’t just mean facing towering dinosaurs; it also means taking a bite of something green,” Kathy shared. “The story follows Billy’s hesitation to try

Paul and I were immensely blessed by Jonathan and Rhoda Charles in 2013, as they entrusted us with a thriving business they had, had for 33 years. It has been a blessing for these past 13 years to be entrusted with people’s special moments.

As many of you may know Paul passed away unexpectedly June 21, 2025. I have tried to honor him and the business this past year as best I could. We’ve had some great local photographers help out, but at this point, it is no longer Paul Jacobs Photography. Paul’s passing has created a huge hole in my family’s life and brought home to me how very short life can be. As I enter retirement age, I want to spend it with my family and friends and not work the many hours it takes to have a successful business. So, at this time I have made the difficult decision to close Paul Jacobs Photography in June. We will take photos until the end of May then hopefully have everything printed by the end of June. We will NOT be doing any graduations. We do ask that if there are photos you would like to purchase, please do so before the end of May. green vegetables and the small but courageous steps he takes along the way.”

The book, which came out in January, is the first in a series of 10 Kathy plans to write.

“I see these books as a valuable tool to help parents gently guide their picky eaters,” she explained. “Each book will include simple steps that parents can begin putting into practice right away. They also include recipes and a QR code for a free digital cookbook with kid-friendly recipes.

This book collection is like having another tool in your parenting tool belt.”

She already has outlines for the rest of the books.

The second book in the s e r i e s , “ B a i l e y ’s B e l l y Battle” will be released in May and will focus on bellyaches and gut issues.

Each book will highlight a specific color of fruit or vegetable - green for the first book, orange for the second.

Kathy is no stranger to writing. She has previously publishe d four b o ok s , including “Recalculating,” a book about navigating out of negativity that was released in 2017. Her other books include autumn and winter word searches and an Advent family devotional called “The Manger in the Middle.”

Her husband of 38 years, Dan, helped her with the word search and Advent books and will illustrate the rest of the books in Kathy’s children’s series, although she hired a different illustrator for “The Green Bean Time Machine.”

Kathy said writing books had never been on her bucket list until she saw an ad one day for a contest for free tuition for a self-publishing course for book writing. At the time, she was caring full time for her mother, who had dementia, and she thought writing would be a great outlet for self-care. She entered and won the contest.

“The school was wonderful and took me through the steps from blank page to a full written and published book,” she said. “It was a great experience, so when the time was right, I decided to continue with my writing.”

She transitioned from adult-focused books to children’s books after being

inspired about a year ago.

“I originally got the idea for the book in February of 2025,” she recalled. “I was actually deep in prayer, and I believe the Lord gave me the idea and has prompted me to write these adventure stories for picky eaters. If anyone desires healthy kids, who more than the One who created them?”

She loves that her writing helps people, and she enjoys the creative outlet writing provides. She’s also written more than 200 songs and recorded a 10-song CD several years ago.

The most challenging part of writing, she said, is simply making time to do it. She’s busy spending time with Dan, along with their three children and six grandchildren.

“Our grandchildren love ‘ T he Green Bean Time Machine’ book, and the illustration for the main character, Billy, was created with my 9-year-old grandson in mind,” she said. “They look very similar, so it’s extra sweet and meaningful to have this fun aspect to this book series.”

She advises others who are interested in writing book s to first read as much as possible to learn what type of books are the most appealing to them and why. Then, she recommends, write about something you’re good at and ask yourself, ‘What can I teach people?”

She wants readers of her children’s series to understand why a child might hesitate to try certain foods and how to deal with the emotions parents might feel when feeding picky eaters.

“It can cause so much f r u s t r a t i o n f o r b u s y, hardworking parents who love their kids and really just want what’s best for them,” she said. “My hope is that families will not only grow in their health as their little ones learn to eat more fr uits and vegetables, but that they would also receive the gift of a peaceful dinner table, where trying new foods is an enjoyable and normal experience.”

Mobley is a special needs cheerleader who attends Cocalico High School.

Bob Herman, treasurer of the Susquehanna Valley Chapter, noted that the group has a long history.

“Our chapter started in 1975 as the Columbia Area Chapter, then as we grew and to expand our pool of nominees, we changed to the Susquehanna Valley Chapter,” he said. “Our main focus is to honor worthy athletes. … Nominations are made, and a ballot goes out to our members for voting purposes.”

Koser, a 1986 graduate of Donegal High School, was a three-time Lancaster-Lebanon League Champion in the 3,200meter race, as well as the 1986 District 3 Champion.

He went on to compete at the U.S. Naval Academy and has been involved in some coaching capacity with Donegal High School cross-country and track and field since 1992.

Strickler is a 2000 graduate of Columbia High School, where he earned varsity letters in football and basketball.

In football, he was a twoway All-State player, team captain, league standout and had his jersey retired.

In basketball, he scored 1,204 points, led in scoring and rebounding, earned first-team AllLeague honors and won MVP three times.

In addition to a holiday open house held during Christmas in Christiana, the stations is open for tours by appointment.

“We have a deck and we often have people come and hang out on the deck and watch the trains,” Steve said. “We want to get people into the station and to view the caboose.”

The Lancaster Chapter, NRHS members have restored, preser ved and donated many train- and rail-related projects to L anc a ster Co unt y and surrounding communities through the years, including a trolley from L a n c a s t e r, a R e a d i n g Railroad Company crossing watchman’s box and various railroad cars. The chapter has also organized Amtrak rail trips to many places, including Horseshoe Curve; western Pennsylvania; and Mystic Seaport, Conn. “Amtrak would add passenger cars on their trains to accommodate how many tickets were sold,” Steve explained. “We would sell 18-car trains.”

“We (might meet) at Strasburg Rail Road and ride the train, and when it comes back we have our meeting on the train. We mix it up,” noted Linda.

Members pay a yearly fee, which gets them the Lancaster Dispatcher, the chapter’s monthly newsletter. New members are welcome. “Many young people are not interested in railroading anymore because they did not grow up with it,” noted Steve.

“We are more than happy to have young people come in and join us.”

The duo will travel about 3,400 miles for the event and almost 4,500 miles by the time he arrives back home in just over a week.

Along the way, they will compete against about 90 other teams.

This will be Roberts’ 17th time competing in One Lap of America. Over the past several years, he has raised more than $60,000 in total for PBCC. In October 2024 at the PBCC’s pre-conference Pink Party at the Hilton Hotel, Roberts received the Pennsylvania Shining Light Award for raising more than $50,000.

Roberts will place a sticker on the roof of the Corvette in honor of each person who donates. The donor’s name

There was also a chapter banquet held at Hershey Farm Resort in November.

Tony White, NRHS president, presented the Lancaster Chapter a Certificate of Recognition for its 90th anniversary and for being the first charter chapter of the organization. In addition to S teve and Linda, accepting the certificate were Tom Shenk, president; Glenn Kendig, first vice president; Cindy K endig , first director ; Richard Ruttledge, treasurer; David Stambaugh, second vice president; and member Gayle Stambaugh.

One of the chapter ’s major accomplishments was the restoration of the freight station, located at 10 Railroad Ave., Christiana. Notably, the station was featured in the 1985 movie “Witness” starring Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis.

According to Linda, the two-stor y building was moved east 40 feet to its present location in 1903 to install additional track.

Passenger service ceased in 1907, when the new Christiana passenger station on the opposite side of the tracks was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad; it terminated service in 1952. Amtrak now leases the 1888 freight station
