“I like to call this event ‘the most fun you’ll have planning your vacation,’” said Wendy Royal, event coordinator for the PA Family Travel Fair. “It’s free to attend. You can go around, get all kinds of informationvisitors’ guides, brochures and information about things only the locals know.”
The eighth annual PA Family Travel Fair will be held on Saturday, April 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center and Fairgrounds, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon. It will feature more than 50 vendors and exhibitors showcasing destinations and attractions from throughout the state.
“They are there to hand out free information. There’s no selling,” Royal said. “You can talk to the vendors, and they can answer any questions you have. Nobody knows their area or their attraction better than they do.”

It’s something many of us don’t like to think about, but it’s something that will happen to every one of us. Death is a natural part of human existence, and, while it may seem tempting to ignore this reality, it’s important to plan for this stage. With that in mind, Mount Joy Church of God will host “Planning for Life’s Final Season.” The talk will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, at the church, 30 E. Main St., Mount Joy.

Vendors will represent all corners of the state, providing ideas for summer getaways, day trips or longer vacations. Participants will include amusement parks; campgrounds; museums; and visitor bureaus, including the PA Great Outdoors Visitors Bureau.
“People love the outdoors in Pennsylvania. One of our new vendors is the Keystone Elk Country Alliance,” Royal said, adding that the Elk County-based group will have lots of information on the elk herds that populate the region. “They’ll have information on the best times to see the elk, and they’ll give people lots of ideas of things to do in the area.”
New this year, the PA Family Travel Fair will feature two grand prize giveaways.

“This is a thoroughly enjoyable event with music at both ends of the venue area and access to breweries from across the country, many you’ve never tasted their offerings before,” said Sherry Caldwell, secretary/treasurer for Voyage Mount Joy, which is organizing the fest. “It’s a rainor-shine event and pet friendly.”

The festival will have a ’90s theme, and people are encouraged to dress to impress in their favorite retro outfit. Dave Gates Music will perform ’90s covers by request, and DJ Caraby will spin hits of the ‘90s. Tickets to the fest will include a branded taster cup and unlimited samples from the breweries for the duration of the event.

“This is a fundraiser, with the help of YAH Brew, for Voyage Mount Joy, to continue our mission to put back into the community,” Caldwell said. “Last year we donated $4,000
to Donegal Athletic Club, funded our National Night Out program, donated to various organizations in the community and offered a scholarship to a graduating senior at Donegal High School for up to $2,500.”
Last year was the first time the organization held the brew fest, and the group has made some tweaks to this year’s event.
“We’ve added more music, more potties and some new breweries are attending,” Caldwell remarked. “Last year was an amazing success for our first attempt.”
She invites anyone who is interested in sampling some beverages, enjoying the music or chowing down on food to get a ticket for the brew fest.
“We’d love for you to come see what our entire community has to offer,” she noted. “We will allow exit and reentry at three points, so you can visit local businesses along Main Street. We’ll have a post at each entry point identifying the businesses.”

“We have two big getaways this year, instead of one like we’ve had in the past,” Royal said. “Both are for families of four, and they include lodging, attractions, vouchers, gift cards for restaurants and more. One is from Happy Valley Adventure Bureau, and one is from Destination Gettysburg.”
The first 500 people in the door at the travel fair will receive a goodie bag, perfect for stuffing full of information picked up at vendor booths, Royal said, adding, “Your bag will be full by the end of the day.”
The event is truly for the whole family, with plenty of options for kids to have fun.
“We have a kids’ passport, which encourages kids to interact with the vendors,” Royal explained. “One lucky youngster will win eight all-day passes to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park & Laguna Splash Water Park.”
Additionally, a balloon artist will entertain from 10 a.m. to noon, and airbrush tattoos will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m.

Along with vendors, the fair will feature a program from Sam Leamer, a local historian who will offer a presentation sponsored by Visit Lebanon Valley from 9 to 10:50 a.m.
“In honor of the 250th birthday of America, we wanted to bring somebody in who can talk about what life was like during Colonial times,” Royal said.
At 1:15 p.m., Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation president Marci Mowery will speak.
Royal has been organizing the PA Family Travel Fair since 2018, although she had been thinking about the idea for several years before that.

Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will present a program at noon and will also have a booth set up all day for visitors to interact with some of the organization’s animals.
Mascots will also be on-site, including Echo the Bat from Lincoln Caverns.
“She’s a lot of fun for the kids,” Royal said. “They really like meeting her.”
“She’s going to talk about opportunities for families in our state parks,” Royal said. “She was a schoolteacher, so she makes her presentations relatable for kids.”
Food will be available for purchase at a restaurant on-site at the expo center.
“It’s the kind of food you would expect to have at a county fair,” Royal said, noting that the restaurant is set up cafeteria style and is located right across the hall from the travel fair.
The Marietta Lions Club will hold its 23rd annual Charles Huck Memorial Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 4, at 1 p.m., rain or shine. The egg hunt will take place at Marietta War Memorial Park, 344 E. Walnut St., Marietta. Attendees should enter by Aaron Avenue.
The egg hunt is open to children from six months to 10 years of age. They will be divided into four age groups with prizes given in each group.
The Marietta Lions Club has served the community for 94 years. Besides a yearly egg hunt, the club serves with the purchase, maintaining, and hanging of Christmas lights; highway cleanup on Route 441; regularly supplying food and finances for the local food bank; and participation in Marietta Day with its famous roast beef sandwiches. The club will collect nonperishable goods for the Marietta Community Care Center at this year’s egg hunt.
“Over the years, I’ve always been astonished that we don’t know what’s going on in our own backyard,” she said. “There are so many cool things in our state that people just aren’t aware of.”
Tourism is big business in Pennsylvania. According to a 2024 economic impact study, the most recent study completed, visitors to the state spent $49.9 billion, equating to $144 million a day. Tourism also supports more than 500,000 jobs in the state and generates more than $5 billion in tax revenue to benefit the state.
More than 2,000 people attended last year’s PA
Family Travel Fair, and Royal is excited to host it in a new venue this year, with lots of space and plenty of free parking.
“Kids love this event because there’s always something fun to do. Parents love it because it’s free and they can get lots of information,” she said. “It’s just a fun day and an opportunity to find out things they didn’t know about what there is to do in our state.”

“The conversation will be looking at how to make decisions about our ‘final season,’” said Adam Swarr, pastor of family ministries for Mount Joy Church of God. “How do we decide what to put in our will and plan for what happens afterward? It will also look at things like preplanning medical decisions through a living will and other aspects of planning for our future health, financial and emotional aspects as we age.”
Swarr understands this subject well, he said.
“Before getting into ministry, I was a licensed financial adviser for over a decade, so I know from experience this is a topic that most people haven’t thought about or are unprepared for,” he remarked. “Even people that put plans together find out there were things they didn’t think about it or plan for. My hope is that those in attendance will learn a few things they can use to make educated decisions about what’s best for themselves and their families.”
The talk offers a way for the church to interact with people outside its congregation, he said.
“Our church has always had a focus on the community, but this year we wanted to take it to the next level, and part of that is putting on a series of educational talks,” he stated. “We did a parenting event in February, now this one, and we have other events in the works for the fall.”
Both Morales and McHenry work for Ever -
ence, a financial planning company that serves Mount Joy and surrounding areas. Morales’ background includes more than 15 years of experience in the financial industry, providing guidance to pastors, churches and congregations in areas of stewardship and financial ministries. McHenry serves as an investment adviser representative and is a licensed insurance agent, providing clients with financial planning, retirement and life transition navigation and investment management and socially responsible investments.
Swarr hopes people will attend to ensure a steady future for the family they leave behind when they die.
“With my background as a financial adviser, I’ve seen bad situations when someone hasn’t planned for that final season. I’ve seen families torn apart after someone passes away, fighting over how to handle things,” he said. “It’s all unnecessary. Having a proper plan can save a lot of heartache, fighting and oftentimes money. It’s always been my passion to educate people. Our church wants to be a community resource, so we are trying to provide free opportunities to help those around us by teaching them practical tools they can use to improve their lives.”
No tickets are required to attend the talk, but people are asked to register at www.mountjoy churchofgod.org to ensure there is enough seating for everyone. Light refreshments will be available at the event.
