It takes a village to make a park beautiful. That’s what the Rotary Club of Mount Joy thinks, so the club invites the public to the Rotary Park Workday and Community Celebration on Saturday, April 10. The event will be held in light rain or sunshine. A rain date is set for Saturday, April 24. he Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA) needs you. The organization is holding its membership drive to grow its base and raise funds for its projects. “If you’re enthusiastic for clean, cold-water fishing, and you want to have access to it, we’d love to have you,” said Brandon Crouser, DFCA

secretary. “If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, you should consider joining us.” In a typical year, DFCA would hold two major fundraising events - its outdoor show and kids’ fishing derby. With COVID restrictions, the group could not hold either event this past year. Instead, the organization had to think up new ways to raise funds. “ We set up a new website, www.donegalcreek.org, for people

to make a minimum donation of $10,” Crouser noted. “Upon receiving their donation, we send out a membership pin and card as well as add them to the email list for future events like work parties, meetings and trout stocking the Donegal and Little Chiques creeks.” DFCA meetings are held the third Monday of every month, either at Amato’s Woodfire Pizza and Italian Restaurant in Mount

Community support means everything to the staff at Gus’s Keystone Family Restaurant. To thank the community, the restaurant will offer a free Easter dinner at both its locations 1050 W. Main St., Mount Joy, and 3687 Rothsville Road, Ephrata. The meal will be available for takeout only on Sunday, April 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until meals run out, said Yianis Kourgelis, who owns the restaurant with his father, Gus. The meal will include turkey and ham, mashed potatoes, corn, dinner rolls and dessert. “It’s first-come, firstserved,” Yianis said. “You’ll just drive up, grab a meal and go.” The restaurants offered a free Easter dinner last year for the first time. Yianis said he and his father, along with his brother-in-law, Dino Papazekos, were sitting around talking about how the pandemic was affecting the community when inspiration struck. “My dad said it might be good to do something like this for the community and it would be good to see our customers, because we were closed at that time,” Yianis recalled. “Last year went so well, we knew we wanted to do it again this year. We’re hoping to do it every year.” This year has been tough for the restaurant business, he noted, but that didn’t

stop the family from wanting to give back. “We’ve been in Mount Joy for 21 years, and we’ve been in Ephrata about six years. The communities in both locations have been very supportive,” Yianis explained. “We have regulars who come in two or three times a day. We’ve just gotten such a great response to our restaurants that we thought, if we can give up one day of profits to give back to the community, we’re more than happy to do that.” Last year, the restaurants gave out 1,000 meals between the two locations, he said, adding, “Each meal was packed for two people, so we actually prepared 2,000 meals.” Yianis said the staff is happy to participate in the opportunity to thank customers for their support. “We have very strong loyalty with our customers, but also with our staff,” he stated. “As a family-owned restaurant, we are very tight knit. We also like to think of the community as part of our family because we love to getting to know our customers.” The free meal is a way to show community members how much they are appreciated, Yianis said. “With all the negativity and hardship of this past year, this is something we can do to put a smile on someone’s face,” he explained. “We just like to make people happy.”

Community members use the park for ball games, walks, and picnics. The workday helps to prepare the park for its busy season, Christian noted. Volunteers may register for the event individually or in groups. “We will be spreading about 55 cubic yards of mulch, cutting nice edges in our planting beds, grooming the baseball field infields and warning track, and much, much more,” Christian stated. “If you or your group would like to donate a flat or two of colorful annuals or perennials, feel free to bring them along, and we will find a place for them to go.” If people are interested in helping but cannot attend on April 10, the club will accept monetary donations or will help individuals or groups set up other times to work in the park during the year. This year’s event is particularly important, Christian added, because last year’s workday was canceled due to the pandemic. “The Rotary Club of Mount Joy seeks our community’s assistance to polish some of the rough edges on the gem that is Rotary Park as we prepare the park for the enjoyment of our community’s youth during the upcoming season,” he said. Volunteers should bring their own tools, including shovels, rakes, pitchforks, saws, and wheelbarrows. Four Donegal swimmers took a trip to the PIAA State Tournament last weekend and brought home three medals along with memories for a lifetime. Ethan Shonk secured a pair of fifth-place medals for his performances in the 200 free (1:45.51) and the 100 backstroke (52.08). Both of Shonk’s races resulted in new personal best times and his backstroke time established a new Donegal school record. Ever pushing himself to do better, the junior already has his sights set on next year. “He would have liked to swim faster, but he knows what he needs to work on and is ready to start putting in the hard work for

The grant money has helped the department purchase insulated bags, heating and cooling equipment, and packaging to make meal prepping and transportation easier. “Breakfast service has been the hardest,” Price said. “Less than 10% of our students were participating in breakfast, because kids couldn’t come to the serving lines like they could before. With the addition of the carts and bags, we are able to bring breakfast to them and, in turn, increase our meal distribution by 60%.” Diana Hovey, senior vice president of corporate partnerships for Share Our Strength, the organization behind the No Kid Hungry campaign, said providing food to students is more important than ever. “America’s kids need us,” she stated. “Traditionally, many kids have relied on the meals they get at school each day.” Selecting Donegal to receive the grant was an easy choice, said Jen Roth, general manager K-12 of Kellogg’s Away From Home division, adding, “We recognize the tremendous efforts of the food service team at Donegal School District who are working tirelessly to help get more meals to more children.”

physical challenges. This year’s camp theme is “Hawaiian Hullabaloo!” The camp, which is a project of GEARS, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays through Fridays. Camp will begin on Monday, June 14, and will run through Friday, July 23. Camp will not be held on Monday, July 5. “Camp Ladybug started in the summer of 1968,” said Karen Eberly, senior program coordinator for GEARS. “A group of parents wanted to keep their special needs children active and engaged over the summer.” The camp was originally run by the Kiwanis Club of Elizabethtown, but GEARS took it over in 2003. Camp Ladybug features games, crafts and activities for anyone age 6 and older. “We have a very creative camp director,” Eberly said of Beth Lynch, who also directed camp last summer. “She has really great ideas. … She comes up with wonderful activities, and really, the possibilities of what we can do at camp are endless.” Eberly said the camp has proven so popular that there are campers and volunteers who return year after year. “We have some campers in their 40s who have come for years,” she stated. “We have a lady in her 80s who has volunteered for years.” She noted that Camp Ladybug would not be possible without community sponsors who help fund the camp,

The Samaritan Counseling Center recently announced the final nominees of the 2021 Ethics in Business Awards program. The nominees are Bomberger’s, HairDirect, Graham Packaging, Lancaster Works, and Longview Structures. The annual award program recognizes companies and organizations that demonstrate excellence in integrity, fairness and justice, stewardship, life enhancement, and transparency. As part of the nomination, each of the five final nominees agrees to undergo an extensive review process. The review process also includes an employee survey focused on ethical conduct and a virtual or in-person visit from trained site visitors.
