Library will host authors
BY CATHY MOLITORISIn April, Milanof-Schock Library will host two authors, bringing in an opportunity to learn more about the writing process and their books.
Teresa Peschel, author of “Fed, Safe and Sheltered,” will speak on Saturday, April 6. Author Carolyn Kleinman will discuss “The Class Assignment Is Murder” on Saturday, April 13. Both programs will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy.
“Hosting authors is a great way for the library to connect local authors with the community,” said Stephanie Funk, operations coordinator for the library. “For me, it really brings a book to life when you can speak with the author, find out their inspiration for writing the book and learn more and connect with them face to face.”
Both authors reached out to the library with an interest in presenting their programs, Funk noted. “Both of these authors are incredibly engaging and love sharing their passion with others,” she said. “Their enthusiasm is contagious.”
Peschel’s program, called “Sustainability and Resilience,” will focus on her goal of prioritizing lifestyle choices to provide her family with financial freedom and security. She will discuss her own experience with the idea of saying “no” in order to develop skills to

live a more efficient life without spending a lot of money. “They lived a life that provided them with resiliency to sudden changes such as job loss, supply shortages, rising cost of groceries, etc.,” Funk shared. “She’ll give attendees three takeaways that they can implement immediately.”

Kleinman, a retired English teacher from Lancaster County, will discuss the history of mysteries and their common components in her program, “Unraveling the Mystery of Mysteries.” She’ll also explain how a true crime inspired her to write the book “The Class
Assignment Is Murder.”
Both programs are free to attend, but registration is required as space is limited. Both authors will have their books available for purchase.
For more information or to register for either program, visit https://mslibrary.org.

For more than 55 years, Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim, has been providing skilled nursing and rehabilitation to residents regardless of their ability to pay. Now the nonprofit will serve even more people with its “Hope Expanded… Continuing Our Vision: New Cottage Build” project.
The project includes the construction of two duplexes of single-floor independent living cottages, featuring four suitestyle apartments.
To highlight the new project, Mt. Hope will host two kickoff celebrations, where information will be presented about the cottages, their amenities, floor plans, estimated timelines for construction, and ways for the public to support the cause. Each event will feature a light-fare meal as well as the opportunity to learn more about partnering with Mt. Hope for the future.
People may attend a session on Sunday, April 14, at 11:30 a.m. at Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, 110 Durlach Road, Ephrata, or on Saturday, April 20, at 5 p.m. at Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim.
“One of the most exciting highlights during these two sessions and the week in between is anonymous donors pledged $20,000 as a matching gift, and donations are doubled up to $20,000,” said Kris Wilson, Mt. Hope director of advancement.

The facility began as Mt. Hope Dunkard Brethren Church Home in 1969 after the Dunkard Brethren Church purchased the Mt. Hope meetinghouse from Chiques Church in 1965 to establish a home for seniors and people with disabilities in need of care. Mt. Hope’s original structure on Mt. Hope Home Road, the Mt. Hope Meetinghouse, was built in 1910 by the Chiques congregation as a place of worship and still stands today.
on-site, and independent living cottages on its campus. “It has been a long-term vision for Mt. Hope to be able to build additional independent living cottages,” Wilson said.
“The health care facility completed renovations and upgrades through its 2020 capital campaign, and now is the right time to expand with new cottages.”

Mt. Hope’s mission is to welcome those with limited resources or changing financial circumstances, Wilson said, adding, “Our ministry and work at Mt. Hope is to serve our community by offering housing options and quality care in a wholesome Christian environment.” Mt. Hope’s
mission statement is from Matthew 25:40, where the importance of caring for “the least of these” teaches that everyone deserves compassion, she shared.
Jeff Sterner, Mt. Hope board member, noted that the cottage project is a costly one. “We need your help to complete this project that is estimated to cost $1.2 million,” he said. “Mt. Hope has been good stew -

ards of its resources and has over $200,000 in reserve to get this project started. The project is now fully designed, with land development approvals granted by Rapho Township and completed design drawings ready for permit application. What we need now is the community’s support to raise the remaining funds to get these cottages constructed.”
Space is limited for the kickoff events, and Wilson suggests reserving seats by emailing advancement@ mthopenazarene.org or calling 717-682-8026 by Saturday, April 6.

Vintage Candy Shop, which had its original location in the Cabbage Hill neighborhood of Lancaster city, has moved to a much larger downtown spot near the square. The candy shop, which debuted two years ago at 602 St. Joseph St.,
closed that 600-squarefoot location on Aug. 4, 2023, and moved to a 4,000-square-foot space at 38 W. King St., where it also has a concession window, an ice cream counter and a vending cafe.
The shop reopened in

late February, and is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hours may be extended on weekends as the weather warms and for First Fridays. An official ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening was scheduled for March
27 at 11 a.m., sponsored by the Lancaster City Alliance.
At the new King Street shop, the Vintage Candy Shop has expanded its selection of more than 500 different kinds of candies, including candy necklaces, wax bottles, jawbreakers, candy buttons, caramels, chocolates, gummies, fruit slices and mints and nougats. There are also the classic Barley Toys, Peanut Butter Puffs and Chocolate Straws by Plantation Candy Co., a Pennsylvania-based candy manufacturer, as well as several hundred individually wrapped novelties, including Mary Janes, Razzles, freeze-dried Space Candy, Wax Lips, SkyBars, Zagnut Bars and Zotz.

Fresh cotton candy is made on-site, and Taffy Lane offers mix-n-match salt water taffy that customers can select and weigh on an antique scale. The shop’s popular Stained Glass Art Cookie Kits will be available in both original sugar cookie and chocolate flavors in the shop. The kits make it easy and fun to create one-of-a kind edible works of art. Each kit includes individual
mix packets, candies and cookie cutters.
The ice cream counter serves hand-dipped locally made Kreider Farms ice cream in a variety of flavors with toppings that include hot fudge and the classic chocolate shell. Hot drinks and slushies are served daily both inside and at the concession window, which also offers snacks, novelty candies, soft pretzels and muffins to walking customers.
The new shop also
features a vending cafe offering a wide variety of meals, snacks, drinks and sandwiches. The cafe has seating at both rectangular and round tables, complete with vintage stools that are kid-friendly favorites. With self-serve microwave stations with an array of condiments, the vending cafe offers easy, quick affordable options for anyone on the go. Humane Pennsylvania sets grand opening
A grand opening for Humane Pennsylvania’s newly renovated Lancaster Campus will occur on Saturday, March 30, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m.
Campus improvements include a brand-new Adoption Center for Cats & Crit-
ters and Spike & Tilly’s Pet Resort, a nonprofit boarding facility. The reimagined Lancaster Campus has been designed to increase animal adoptions, provide more emergency response services, offer affordable boarding and redefine cat and critter adoption housing and sheltering.

The grand opening will take place as a community event that is free, kidfriendly and open to the public. It will also offer an opportunity for visitors to see the campus firsthand. The event will include guided tours of the new buildings, food items from the Mad Dash Food Truck and a beer and wine garden.

The campus is located at 2195 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. To learn more, visit www.HumanePA.org.
