In 2015, Deon Butler was living a dream, playing professional football for the Detroit Lions, but he held a secret: Despite having graduated from college, he could not read past a fourth-grade level.
After getting help, Butler was moved to help others, and today, he’s a motivational speaker. He’ll share his story at “Breaking Barriers: A Path of Perseverance.”
The event will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, at The Janus School, 205 Lefever Road, Mount Joy.
Growing up in Michigan, Butler became adept at hiding the secret of his struggle with reading. “I got picked on a lot in middle school and high school, where I was called ‘stupid’ and ‘dumb,’” he recalled. “I bottled it all away, and I got really good at hiding it.”
Butler became a master at memorizing, always chose the easiest book to read if he had to read out loud and avoided situations where his secret might come to light.
But as a professional football player, Butler found it difficult to hide his illiteracy.
“There are a lot of words you have to read in football,” he said, referencing playbooks and play strategies. He played professionally for a year in 2015 and then started working as an educational liaison for a social services agency.
“I was good at my job, but I couldn’t get a promotion,” he said. “My supervisors would ask me to document my work, and I couldn’t do that.”
After his mother passed away just before the pandemic, Butler began to take steps to change
his situation. He started seeing a therapist, relied on his faith and found support from his wife.
“My therapist asked, ‘What do you like to do?’ and I said, ‘I like to run,’” he said. “I started running

15 to 20 miles, speaking to God as I’m running. I’m pouring my heart out to God about my frustration and my depression.”
Then, he learned his wife was pregnant.
“I realized I want to read books to my daughter,” he said. “I want
to be that father that reads to his kids every night.”
He decided to take a risk: Tell the truth about his illiteracy on social media.
His posts caught the eye of someone from the Michigan Dyslexia Association, who told Butler he might have the disorder.
He began working with a tutor, discovered he did indeed have dyslexia and started working to relearn the right way to read.
“I really had to go backwards at first,” he said. “I had developed bad habits of memorizing words. I had to relearn my ABC’s, learn how to break down syllables.”
Learning to read was a struggle, he admits.
“There were days when I was crying,” he said, but he relied on God to see him through. “I had to remember, ‘Just let my guard down; let go of my ego.’ I also had

We work with our 22 member districts to provide training and technical assistance and special programming for students with disabilities,” she added. There is a wide variety of programs that offer support. “My team offers training and technical assistance,” said Telleen. “We do go out to the various districts, but we also host training or job groups here at Burle (Corporate Park) in our conference center. We also have programs within districts for children with disabilities, supporting students with multiple disabilities or autism.”

to forgive myself for the trauma I went through in school.”
With lots of hard work, Butler learned to read, and he recalled one day that particularly stood out in his journey.
“I read the Bible out loud,” he said. “I cried so hard, because I had never heard myself read something like that out loud.”
Motivated by his own success and the support he found on social media throughout his journey with dyslexia, Butler wanted to help more people. He worked with lawmakers to pass a dyslexia bill in Michigan.
Now living in the Pittsburgh area, Butler continues to advocate for reading support services.
“I read a lot now,” he said, noting that he’s also in the process of writing a book. “I feel like a blind person who is able to see for the first time. I need to read every book.”
He’s also working with lawmakers in Pennsylvania and Ohio to develop more dyslexia support, and he travels the region to tell his story.
After meeting and speaking with Brenda Keller, director of academics for The Janus School, Butler was impressed with the school’s mission.
The Janus School is the only independent school in central Pennsylvania dedicated to helping students with language- or mathbased learning disabilities, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, executive
function difficulties, nonverbal learning disorder or auditory processing disorder. The school serves students from seven Pennsylvania counties.
When Butler visits the school in April, he will interact with students and teachers throughout the day on Friday, April 25, and he will share his story in an assembly.
His April 26 event will be open to the public, and Keller hopes his talk will draw a wide range of audience members, from families of students to community members and literary specialists.
“We warmly invite you to attend and encourage you to invite family, friends, teammates, organizations and colleagues,” Keller said. “Let’s come together to hear Deon’s powerful message and celebrate the incredible work of The Janus School.”
Tickets are required to attend the public event. To learn more or to purchase tickets, visit https://the janusschool.org/breaking_barriers.

LightShine International Ministries began as a follow-up ministry for a music outreach to the biker and rock music culture, founded by Tom Denlinger and Jeff Zimmerman. Influenced by Keith Green and Resurrection Band, the ministry initially focused on Christian metal music before transitioning to mission work in Alaska after Denlinger felt called by God to serve people in the state. Since 1995, LightShine has sent teams to support churches and youth camps, expanding its reach through leadership training. With a base in Palmer, Alaska, the ministry continues to grow, strengthening local churches and other outreach programs.
“For 30 years, we have been offering assistance to brothers and sisters in Christ by helping them build His Kingdom in the hearts of the people in Alaska,” Shaffer said. “We offer short-term missionary opportunities for people who love people, love the outdoors and desire to serve in places where churches need help.”
The organization assists churches in remote areas to build Bible camps and maintain their church buildings.
“Our calling is unique,” Shaffer said. “Men and women who do not feel gifted to preach or start churches have been encouraged throughout the years by using their hands to serve the Lord by working with us. We make it our goal not only to minister to the church we are serving, but also to encourage our team members as well.”

“This is our first fundraising dinner for our ministry,” she said. “The dinner is to raise funds to complete our mission base located in Palmer, Alaska. The projects include finishing the upstairs of the house, building a garage for the mission base director and his wife living at the base and then building a main garage to
Coming to the event provides an opportunity to hear directly from the people serving, she said.
“This is a great way to hear about the ministry work we do in Alaska, meet the different team leaders and team members who have served in Alaska and hear from the hosts we serve in Alaska,” she explained. “If you are unable to serve on a team, there are opportunities to
financially support our ministry by just attending the dinner and giving a donation.”
No tickets are needed for the dinner, which is by donation, but reservations are required. To reserve a seat, contact Shaffer at nbrown .brahma@gmail.com or call 717712-6165 by Friday, March 28. For more information on LightShine, visit https://lightshine ministries.org.

Waldorf school slates open house
Susquehanna Waldorf School, 15 W. Walnut St., Marietta, will host an open house on Saturday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to noon. Attendees may tour the classrooms, watch a traditional puppet play, and learn about the curriculum. The school is open to children in prekindergarten through eighth grade.
Fans of the children’s series “Bluey” may discover there are similarities between the school featured in the show - Glasshouse Primary - and real-world Waldorf schools.
Waldorf education champions the idea that childhood is a time for creativity and wonder. Just
like Bluey and Bingo transform tree stumps into helicopters or conjure up magical kingdoms from everyday objects, students engage in open-ended play with natural materials like wooden blocks, silks, and handmade toys. These early experiences with imaginative play lay the foundation for creative problem-solving and innovation as students grow into their middle school years.
At Susquehanna Waldorf School, lessons go beyond textbooks. Whether exploring math through hands-on activities or learning life skills through collaborative projects, students seek to develop critical thinking and empathy. In the early grades, experiential learning is included to build confidence and curiosity, while middle school students take on increasingly complex projects that integrate artistic, academic, and practical skills to foster resilience and independence.
All students, including the middle-schoolers, spend ample time outside, exploring the Susquehanna River and learning through nature walks. Waldorf education emphasizes the value of connecting with the earth and fostering
a sense of wonder and respect for the natural world. Early outdoor experiences evolve into more structured ecological studies in the older grades, deepening students’ understanding of their place in the world and their responsibility to it.
The school also seeks to create an environment where everyone feels like family. Eighth-grade students serve as buddies to younger children, building a sense of mentorship and connection across ages. Older students take on leadership roles, modeling empathy and cooperation for younger peers while preparing for their next educational journey.
In addition to the open house, the school offers private tours. To contact the school about scheduling a tour, visit www.susquehanna waldorf.org.
The Susquehanna Waldorf School, founded in 1987, envisions a community where children love to learn and are inspired to live with purpose, compassion, and joy. The school’s mission is to foster creative, confident, and compassionate learners through an education that nurtures the head, heart, and hands.
