Help needed to serve the community

Yearsago, Elayne Olson was on a mission trip to Mexico, where she had the opportunity to work with young children. She noticed that for many of the children, the meal they received at school was their only food source for the day. “I knew I wanted to do something to help kids who have food insecurity, and I’m someone who has always said to look in your own backyard first,” she recalled. Inspired to make a difference, Olson began researching food programs in Lancaster County and soon learned about the Power Packs Project, an organization that distributes a weekly food pack to students.

Olson started the Donegal Power Packs Project in 2014, but now she’s ready to take a step back. She’s looking for someone to take over leading the volunteer-run organization, helping to provide access to food for Donegal School District families that qualify for the program.

“I would love for someone or an organization or group to step in and lead,” Olson stated. “It requires organizational skills, access to a computer and printer, familiarity with Google Docs and the ability to do food inventory and ordering.”

She estimates that the leadership position requires about 15 to 20 hours of volunteer time a week and noted that it would be possible for several people to split the tasks. “This job could definitely be spread out among several people, and there would just be one person overseeing everyone,” she explained.

Open to students in kindergarten through grade 12, Donegal Power Packs is hosted by The Donegal Foundation. About 13 volunteers help fill 77 seven-pound bags of f ood once a week at Marietta Community Chapel, which donates the space to the nonprofit. Each bag contains the ingredients for a nutritious meal, a recipe and a few staples, as well as an educational tip sheet. “The idea of Power Packs is See Help pg 11

Join author Robert Dugoni for a talk

There’s an occupational hazard Mary Ann Steinhauer faces as the leader of the Council of Friends of Public Libraries. “People will stop me in the street and ask, ‘Are you having another author event?’” she said with a laugh. Thankfully for Steinhauer, the answer is “yes.” The Council of Friends will host award-winning author Robert Dugoni on Thursday, April 13, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The event will begin at 11 a.m.

Dugoni is perhaps best known for his crime mysteries and legal thrillers. His Tracy Crosswhite

police series has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide. Dugoni is also the author of the Charles Jenkins espionage series and the David Sloane legal thriller series. Additionally, he has written several standalone novels, including “The 7th Canon,” “Damage Control,” “The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell: A Novel” and “The World Played Chess.” Ticket holders for the April talk will receive a copy of Dugoni’s latest novel, “Her Deadly Game.”

Dugoni will be joined on stage by Scott LaMar of WITF, who will facilitate the conversation. A book signing and a meet-and-greet with the author will be held after the event.

Scholarship offered to future EMTs and paramedics

Michael P. McMahon was a true Renaissance man. A 1993 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School, he was a registered nurse, a flight attendant and a school bus driver. Each job offered Michael a chance to help people, something he truly believed in. Although he gave his all to everything he did, he was most passionate about his work as an emergency medical technician (EMT). When Michael passed away from colon cancer in October 2021, his family turned its grief into an opportunity to help others. The Michael P. McMahon

Scholarship for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was created to help any resident of Lancaster County who wishes to pursue an EMT, Advanced EMT or Paramedic Certification.

Michael was the oldest of four children and the son of Mike and Joanne McMahon. “He was loving, and he was loved by his family and friends,” Mike stated.

Added Joanne, “Michael’s life was so varied. You couldn’t put him in a box. If he was interested in something, he’d do it. … They say it’s the dash between the years on your gravestone that matters. Michael made the most of that dash.”

Free clothing will be offered to community

For the bus drivers who work for Durham School Services in Elizabethtown, community is everything. Not only do they give their time to transporting students to and from school, but now they also have created an event to give back. Durham’s first community clothing giveaway will be held on Saturday, March 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the business, 2202 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. “We are passionate about our jobs and like to help to give back to the community,” said Stacy Moore, a driver and one of

the event organizers. The clothing giveaway will be open to anyone, but organizers hope it is attended most by people in need.

Donations are curently sought. “We are hoping to get clothes in all sizes, from babies and kids to men’s and women’s clothing,” Moore stated, noting that Durham has been collecting donations for several weeks. “We’re also hoping to have some household necessities and baby items.”

She explained that the idea for the clothing giveaway came from the drivers themselves. “The drivers will often bring in clothes or household items

that they no longer want,” Moore explained. “They would set them on a table we have in our break room for other drivers to go through. We figured, ‘Why not do a big drive for the public?’”

The Durham employees have held other community events in the past, including a craft and vendor show. Bingo is planned for Sunday, April 16, at the American Legion Post 34, 1388 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Doors will open at noon, and bingo will

start at 2 p.m.

Moore said she and her fellow drivers enjoy contributing to their community, and they hope to get a good crowd at the clothing giveaway. “This is a judgmentfree place,” she stated. “Anyone who is in need or knows of anyone in need is more than welcome to stop out and see what we have.”

For more information on the clothing drive or bingo, email Moore at durham partyevents@gmail.com.

Joanne noted that her free-spirited son loved to try new things, but one career path made all the difference. “Being an EMT and eventually a paramedic changed his life,” she shared. “He grew as a person. It made him who he was.”

W hen Joanne sat down to write Michael’s obituary, and she got to the part about giving flowers, she had another idea. “She said, ‘Let’s start a scholarship in his name,’” recalled Mike, noting that they asked family members and friends to contribute.

“Our goal is to find as many people to help as we can,” said Joe McMahon, Michael’s brother. “We want to pay for as many as we can and give people the opportunity to do this as a career, to help people to do something every day that they can be proud of.”

Noted Mike, “This is a full scholarship, based on capability and need.” It will cover tuition up to $7,500.

To help develop the scholarship, the McMahon family reached out to the Lancaster County EMS Council, a nonprofit organization made up of representatives from all of the EMS agen-

cies serving Lancaster County. The initial scholarship was open to students and alumni at Lancaster Catholic High School, but a second round is being offered countywide.

The scholarship is open to both current students and adults. “Michael was kind of a late bloomer, so the ideal candidate could be someone who has stayed home with their kids and now wants to get back into the workf orce,” said Michael’s sister Mary Kate Walsh. “Or it could be someone who wants to change careers and needs financial support to do that.”

The scholarship is meant to be a stepping stone into a career that helps people, said Michael’s sister Colleen Murphy, who added, “We need more helpers in the world like my brother.”

The application process for the scholarship will run from Saturday, April 1, through Friday, June 30. Scholarship winners will be notified by Monday, July 31. For more information, to obtain a scholarship application or to make a donation to the scholarship fund, contact Joe McMahon at joe@joemcmahonlaw.com.

The Festival Choir of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Lebanon, will travel to St. John’s Episcopal Church, Marietta, to sing Choral Evensong on Sunday, March 19, at 6 p.m. Acting choirmaster Jason Yannuzzi will lead the choir, and St. John’s Church’s interim rector, the Rev. Julian Eibin, will lead the liturgy. Terry Heisey, organist at St. Luke’s, Lebanon, will play the organ for the service.

As is traditional in Choral Evensong services, the choir will sing the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, this time with

settings composed by Karl E. Moyer, one of two organists at St. John’s. The anthem will be “Wash Me Thoroughly From My Wickedness” by Samuel Sebastian Wesley.

Heisey will play “Wondrous Love” by Daniel Pinkham for the prelude and “At Eventide” by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford for the postlude.

Following the liturgy, Moyer will provide a halfhour recital of music chosen in part to demonstrate the wide variety of sounds available on the small pipe organ. The selections will include “Grand Choeur Dialogue” by

“Robert Dugoni is a really great writer,” Steinhauer said. “I read ‘The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell’ in two days. I could not put it down.”

She noted that the Council of Friends has been offering author talks for 22 years, and the events always draw a crowd. “Typically, we have anywhere from 300 to 500 people that come,” she said, stating that the church makes a perfect venue. “Everybody will be able to hear and see

what’s going on. There are two big screens and a great sound system.”

The Council of Friends of Public Libraries, founded in 2000, is made up of volunteers who are committed to promoting reading countywide. The author events are fundraisers for the public libraries in the county, and to date, the group has raised more than $140,000. This year, the Council of Friends has established a partnership

Houck grabs a pair of district silver medals

Entering the pool deck at Cumberland Valley (CV) High School, where schools from around District Three are gathered for the district championships in swimming and diving, can be daunting.

For Donegal seniors Emma Myers, Kylie Wilkinson and Sierra Houck, it seemed to have been another ordinary swim meet.

“Sierra getting her two silver medals in the 50 and 100

freestyles were the highlights for Donegal,” said the team’s swim coach, Isaac Greene.

“Both of her times were personal bests. She has a great position for states.”

Houck posted a time of 24.60 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle in the District Three Class 2A championships held at CV on March 3 and 4. She placed second in the 100 free with a time of 54.27.

Wilkinson and Myers took sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 200 freestyle with

times of 2:01.53 and 2:02.52.

Wilkinson also came in eighth place (56.56) in the 100 freestyle.

“Kylie did a great job with her 200 and 100,” Greene said. “Her 100 fell short of the state cut. She is in for the 200.”

“Emma is a state alternate for the 200,” continued the coach. “She also showed lots of improvement.”

Myers swam the 500 free at a 5:36.84 clip, finishing fifth.

Sophomore Haley Leibfried

earned 12th place (1:07.24) in the 100 backstroke. She swam a strong 200 individual medley as well, earning 13th place with her time of 2:24.81.

“Haley continues to improve,” said Greene. “She battled through some shoulder injuries this year and looks to be back stronger next year.”

The only district qualifier for the boys’ team was freshman Thomas Dohl Jr. He improved on his LancasterLebanon League championship time of 1:02.44 by swimming the 100-yard butterfly at a 1:01.65 pace. He finished 18th in the event. Dohl also improved his seeding time for the 100 breaststroke, recording a time of 1:11.95.

“Thomas Dohl Jr. improved again on his fly,” said Greene. “As a freshman, he has a bright future ahead.”

BOWLING

Cooper Palmer represented Donegal at the District Three Regional Tournament on March 3 at Leisure Lanes.

“It was a very tough oil pattern, and Cooper struggled with that,” said Paul Stubenrauch, the Indians’ coach. “But he got to experience what type of oil patterns will be used in future league and

Lititz Pretzel Fest scheduled

The Kiwanis Club of Lititz Area will host the 2023 Lititz Pretzel Fest in downtown Lititz on Saturday, May 6, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Downtown parking will be free the day of the event. The Lititz Pretzel Fest will be held rain or shine.

Highlighting the area’s rich pretzel history, the Lititz Pretzel Fest will include numerous sweet and savory samplings at about 24 locations, with pretzels as the key ingredient. There will also be beverage tastings at five sites and live music.

encrusted chicken bites with Mountain Lager at Appalachian Brewing Company and the chipotle pretzel bark with smoked gouda and Wilbur Chocolate from Hearth and Harrow’s chef.

Some new additions will be Brazilian pretzel pizza at Brazilian Table and smoked Buffalo chicken dip at Tied House, as well as a cannoli pretzel parfait at Piccolo Eatery. Pretzel biscottis will be served with a sample of sea salt caramel coffee at Pebbles and Lace, and chocolate chip cheesecake dip will be available at Moravian House Antiques.

Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, event co-sponsor, provides all the pretzels used as ingredients and pretzels to

accompany adult tastings. Anyone who wants to volunteer to mark tickets or help serve treats should contact Melissa Warner at geom1948@gmail.com or call 717-468-7665. Volunteers will receive vouchers to a few tasting stops.

Born and raised

We are fortunate to live in an area that has long been regarded as the “Garden Spot of America.” Generational farming is a part of the Lancaster County culture. In fact, we lead the nation in young farmers. According to the most recent Economic Impact study by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, 14% of farms in Pennsylvania had a young producer (defined as someone age 35 or younger) operating as the primary farmer. At last count, Lancaster County had 2,400 young producers, twice as much as the second-ranked county in the nation, LaGrange County, Ind. In addition, Lancaster County leads the nation in farmland preservation, with more than 113,000 acres preserved. As promising as that sounds for the future, we’re still losing more than 1,200 acres of Lancaster County farmland each year to development, according to the Lancaster Farmland Trust (LFT), a nonprofit organization with the mission of preserving agriculture and stewarding the land in Lancaster County. For more information on LFT, visit https://lancasterfarm landtrust.org.

Farming can be a backbreaking, often undervalued vocation that doesn’t stop at 5 p.m. on Friday. Like we often do with first responders and the military, thank a farmer for his or her service to our community. Look at labels and buy locally. See where your milk, produce, and meat are coming from. When you shop at local supermarkets, if you don’t see local produce in season, ask why the store isn’t providing locally sourced foods. Encourage the store to offer local produce so shoppers can easily support local farmers.

The Lancaster County landscape is dotted with roadside produce stands when crops are in season. Most of these stands and farmers markets won’t open until later in the spring or summer. Below is a list of some of the many locations where you can get fresh local produce, meats, and cheeses.

Farmers and growers face a significant threat in the years to come as industrial agriculture operations continue to expand. According to the National Resources Defense Council, industrial agriculture is the large-scale, intensive production of crops and animals. Such operations make it more difficult for small farmers and growers to turn a profit, and they often involve the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The use of such

products poses an additional threat to small farmers and growers, as the Union of Concerned Scientists notes that the heavy application of fertilizers and pesticides accelerates soil erosion and increases pest problems.

Consumers concerned by the effects of industrial agriculture on the environment and on small farmers’ and growers’ ability to earn a good living can support efforts such as regenerative farming and organic farms.

On the third Monday of each month, the Lancaster County Postcard Club meets at the Farm & Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. During the meetings, which are open to the public, members gather to discuss postcards on a wide variety of topics. Each meeting features a specific theme and includes a talk from a guest speaker who focuses on that theme.

In January, the club creates a schedule of which themes will be incorporated throughout the year, and the topic of the club’s meetings

can be anything from railroads to boats to hometowns. For its meeting in January, the club had members share postcards relating to their favorite holidays. On Feb. 20, the topic of the meeting was cartoons and humor, and attendees participated in a member’s market to buy and sell postcards.

Jere Greider of Mountville has been a member of the postcard club for over 20 years, first becoming interested in them while adding to his collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia. After Greider f ound a Coca-Cola postcard, he began to shift his focus to

collecting postcards from around Lancaster County.

Greider is now a postcard dealer and participates in several yearly shows where postcard enthusiasts come together to buy and sell items for their collections. During the shows, around 25 postcard dealers present boxes of cards that are organized by topic. A buyer will often look for postcards from specific locations, such as his or her hometown or alma mater. Before the advent of different technologies in the 19th century, postcards were a way for travelers to remember a location they visited without a camera. Many people also used them to communicate with others who lived nearby before the invention of the telephone, as a way to stay connected with each other. Today, postcards are primarily found in tourist attractions, but many vintage cards still circulate in antique stores and on the internet.

PLACE AN AD IN THE CLASSIFIEDS

“Postcards cover every topic imaginable,” Greider said. “We have so many antique stores and outlets here in central Pennsylvania where you can find them.” Besides combing through local antiques stores, Greider often finds items to add to his collection by searching for postcards on websites like eBay. Throughout his many years spent collecting postcards, Greider has learned more about the market and what people are seeking. Currently, he is focused on collecting postcards that originate from the Mountville area and the surrounding towns.

During the March meeting, set for Monday, March 20, at 7 p.m., the Lancaster County Postcard Club will share postcards from various places of worship. For more information, search for “Lancaster County Postcard Club” on Facebook.
