Taking a seat at the table

MargaretThatcher once said, “If you want something done, ask a woman.” There’s a whole lot getting done in Lancaster County, because for the first time ever, all of the Chambers of Commerce in the county are led by women. Each woman brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to her role, but all of the leaders share a common goal: They want to make their community a great place to live and work.

Denise Grove, who started her role as executive director of the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce in February of 2022, said the job offers her a way to really connect with others. “As a lifetime resident of Elizabethtown, I had a strong desire to work where I could make a difference and be a

Donegal will present “Once Upon a Mattress”

Donegal Performing Arts has an opening for a princess. Tryouts for the role will be held on stage when the club presents “Once Upon a Mattress.” The show will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 10, and Saturday, March 11, as well as at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 12.

The main contender for the part

isn’t your typical princess, said Erin Kready, a senior who portrays Winifred, a girl who comes to the kingdom to find love. “The show is a rendition of ‘The Princess and the Pea,’ but the princess isn’t really a princess,” she shared. “She has to pass a series of tests set up by the queen in order to find the man she loves.” The queen is holding the test to find a bride for her son, Prince Dauntless.

part of strengthening our community,” she remarked, a sentiment shared by Heather Valudes, who has been president and CEO of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce since June of 2022. “I love Lancaster and the work that we are able to advance to make our employer community as strong as possible,” she said, noting that the Lancaster Chamber is countywide and represents nearly 1,500 businesses, almost half of the county’s workforce.

For Ashley Zell, who became executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce in January, the job brings a chance to get to know her community. “The friends and connections made and the interaction with the Chamber members and community at our numerous different events are definitely the biggest rewards of this

position,” Zell said.

The women also remarked that holding the job offers a chance to see their communities thrive. “It’s seeing kids dancing at the farmers market,” commented Rebecca Branle, who has been executive director of Venture Lititz since August of 2021. “It’s celebrating big wins with merchants. It’s watching this town become ever more alive with art, culture and community pride.” Her perspective matches that of Kristie Schmid, who has been executive director of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce since March of 2021. “I love seeing our community respond to the revitalization in town, the increase in businesses and the new community events,” Schmid said. “It’s fulfilling to put your time into something and then see others have pride in it as well.”

Going for gold with monarch butterflies

Alessia Archer knew she wanted to earn her Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve, but she was stuck trying to come up with an idea for her project. Inspiration struck when she saw an ad in the Merchandiser for Milkweed 4 Monarchs, an Elizabethtown-based business that grows the essential food for monarch butterflies.

“I contacted Cindy Leonard of Milkweed 4 Monarchs, and I went to her farm, helped her with the milkweed she was growing, and she showed me how to make these mini greenhouses out of old milk jugs and

iced tea jugs,” said Alessia, who is a senior at Donegal High School. “She gave me 200 milkweed seeds for free, and I spent the whole summer making these mini greenhouses.”

Alessia distributed the greenhouses at Marietta Day last May, as well as to friends and family through the summer and early fall of 2022. “W hen it got too cold outside, in September and October, I planned a little lesson plan for day cares, and I had a craft for them to do as well,” she stated. “I went to five or six day cares in Elizabethtown, Columbia, Mount Joy and Hershey, and I gave the lesson and did a craft with the kids.”

Building a legacy

Servants Inc. has its roots in a mission trip that founder and CEO Trent Davis took to Guatemala around the year 2000. Davis wanted to share his experience with others, and he began coordinating mission trips, but that was just the beginning. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina inspired Davis to do home repair work stateside. Flooding in York County in 2010 brought the program home. Servants now has a pres-

ence in Adams and Lancaster counties as well. In Lancaster County, Servants is mostly active in the ELANCO area as well as Columbia and Marietta. Servants Inc. completed more than 110 projects and had more than 10,000 volunteer hours total in 2022.

To raise funds to help area families in need, Servants holds a spring gala. The 2023 event, which will be the fifth for the organization, will be held on Friday, April 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Stone Mill Inn, 305

S. Broad St., Hallam. The event will include a cocktail hour, a sit-down multicourse meal, videos, live and silent auctions, and live music, and Davis will give an update on the work of the ministry.

Calling Stone Mill a “gorgeous” location, Keith Cotton, director of outreach with Servants, said that gala activities changed somewhat after a virtual event was held in 2021.

by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included.

“2021 was the first time we introduced an auction,” said Cotton, who noted that an auctioneer hosted the event and videos were shown. Both those features became part of the live auction in 2022. Because the cocktail hour was successful last year, the 2023 gala will begin with wine and select craft beers. “(During that time), people talked to each other and looked at the silent auction items,” said Cotton. “It was more relaxing.” Cotton pointed out that the food at the event is often a highlight and that attendees often comment on how good it is. The auctioneer who handled the virtual fundraiser will be the event’s master of ceremonies.

“The program is pretty light,” said Cotton, who noted that the videos are created with the audience in mind. “People might not know everything about Servants, so the information that’s presented gives people an introduction to what we do and some of the impact that we have and want to continue to have on the communi-

ties that we serve.”

Silent auction items will include a number of themed baskets. Live auction items have traditionally included a beach house vacation at the Outer Banks and a catered meal by a Servants employee. “He is an excellent chef,” said Cotton. “He makes barbecue and smoker (items).” Other auction items will include a Mission Destiny helicopter ride, a catered brisket dinner, a bourbon tasting party for eight, a three-night weekend mountain getaway, and use of an Ocean City, Md. condominium. Cotton pointed out that one item will be a private dinner for eight at the Stone Mill Inn. “It includes a five-course dinner paired with wine and prepared by an exclusive culinary team,” he said.

While the gala has traditionally been held inside the Stone Mill Inn, this year a heated tent will serve as the dining area. The use of the tent will expand the number of people who can attend to about 175. Cotton said that the organization hopes to raise $50,000 to be used to “minister to the spiritual and physical needs of hurting people in our local community, across the USA, and around the world.”

Executive director Trent Davis (right) addresses attendees at a previous Servants Inc. gala.

The project was a natural fit for Alessia, who said she has loved monarchs since she was a child. “Monarch butterflies are my favorite butterfly,” she stated. “Ever since I was little, it’s been me and my grandmother’s thing to look for the monarchs.”

Her Gold Award project, which Alessia titled “Saving the Monarch Butterflies,” required a minimum of 80 hours to problem-solve, plan and implement. “I definitely learned good communication skills, being able to reach out and call the day cares or go and meet people to talk about my project,” she remarked, noting that she also contacted the Turkey Hill Experience in Columbia, which donated empty jugs for the project.

Alessia has been a Girl Scout for seven years and is a member of Troop 70595. “I’ve learned so much from Girl Scouts,” she said. “We do a lot of things I had never done before and probably wouldn’t get a chance to do without Girl Scouts.” This past summer, her troop traveled to Colorado, where they went ziplining and whitewater rafting and rode horses. When she’s not busy with Girl Scouts, Alessia, who is the daughter of Deanna Musser of Marietta, is involved in a variety of clubs at school and was a member of the field hockey team.

Sunday fitness hike announced

Governor Dick Environmental Center, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will offer a fitness hike on Sunday, March 12, at 10 a.m. This activity will be a faster-paced hike of 4 to 6 miles for cardiovascular fitness.

The hike is open to the public, but preregistration is required by contacting 717-9643808 or governordick@ hotmail.com and providing a name and phone number in case the program is canceled.

Musser said she’s impressed with Alessia’s dedication to the project. “I’m very proud of her,” she said. “She worked really hard. … I also want to thank her troop leader, Julie Houck, and her two regular volunteers, Fran Richards and Sheila Fasig, who do an amazing job with the girls.”

Encouraging other girls to earn their Gold Award, Alessia said, “Even though it’s a lot of work and it feels difficult in the moment, the end is so rewarding, and all of the hard work pays off.”

Alessia will receive her Gold Award at a ceremony at Bucknell University on Sunday, June 11.

Brotzman takes silver; Punches ticket to states

In the South Central Class AAA Regional tournament, which was held on Friday and Saturday, February 24-25, at Spring Grove, Donegal’s Nicholai Brotzman finished sec-

ond at the 285-pound weight class.

The Donegal senior wrestled his way to the championship bout where he faced Layton Schmick of Carlisle. The gold medal went to Schmick who registered a second-period pin.

However, one of the takeaways from Brotzman conforming to the situation was evident in the semifinal match that got him to the finale.

He outlasted Ean Winchester of Twin Valley in a close 3-1 decision in the semis. Winchester had only three losses on the year, building up to the regional semis.

“He executed it to where he could win the match, getting a takedown in the first period and an escape in the second period,” Donegal coach Nick Evans explained. “The big point about that is that Nicholai is used to pinning a lot of people; he’s going to need the experience of lasting through these matches.

The tournament for Brotzman began on one of those pins. He nailed down his 32nd victory of the year with a pin against Josiah Boyer of Cocalico in the first round. Brotzman battled and beat Avery Kuhns of Chambersburg in a 10-7 decision.

“He also had to score a lot of points in that quarterfinal match,” Evans pointed out. “That was nice to see because he gave up a takedown in the first 30 seconds.

“He remained composed and kept scoring,” continued the coach. “Sometimes in the heavyweights, guys can lose momentum when they give up a takedown.”

After a takedown of his

own plus back points, Brotzman went ahead 5-2 and kept scoring.

“The kid kept trying to throw Nicholai onto his back,” explained Evans. “That was his go-to move - upper body throws. We were able to stay out of them.

“We had a goal of finishing in the top four so he could qualify for the state tournament,” Evans added. “The fact that he finished second was awesome. He had an outstanding tournament.”

In the 152-pound weight class, Donegal junior Ruben Mumper faced tough competition, beginning with Boiling Springs senior Michael Duggan who came into the tournament with a 33-3 record.

“Ruben was in one of the toughest weight classes,” Evans said. “He was a state qualifier last year.”

Though Boiling Springs was in Class 2A a year ago, Duggan’s performance showed him ready for the program’s jump to 3A.

“You’re getting a tough opponent in 2A or 3A with Boiling Springs,” said Evans.

Losing 10-6 to Duggan shed a positive light on the match for the Donegal coach.

“I was happy with Ruben’s ability to finish hard,” he said. “He was able to score a reversal in the third period. This is a match he can build on. He really

hung in there.”

Duggan’s 10-6 triumph rerouted Mumper to the consolation matches where he promptly pinned Dominic Delgado of Wilson in only 52 seconds. An 8-5 decision followed, besting Garrett Lowans of Waynesboro. A heartbreaking 6-4 sudden victory by Red Lion’s Frank Gulli, the eventual sixthplace finisher, ended the weekend for Mumper. He finished with a record of 24-9.

“That could have gone either way,” Evans said of the overtime match. “The Red Lion kid wrestled us pretty tough. It was one of those things that whoever scored that overtime takedown would win. It was a pretty evenskilled match.”

Dan Viselli competed in the 215 pound weight class, going 0-2 on the day.

Caidyn Leaf claimed a 9-5 victory in the first round of the 160-pound consolations, after losing the battle to Gettysburg’s Jaxon Townsend.

Following the 9-5 win, Leaf lost to Section 1 champ Samuel Moyer of Governor Mifflin. Leaf finished the season 18-18.

“Caidyn impresses me because he gives up five pounds,” Evans aid. “He’s probably a 152-pounder but wrestles 160. He competes to the end.

“We are pretty excited about his future,” continued the coach. “He’s only a sophomore.”

Because the test is a surprise, Winifred practices everything she can think of to prepare, including spelling, dancing and singing, Erin stated. “Twelve princesses have gone before her and failed,” she said. “Winifred is lucky No. 13.”

Madison Mutterspaugh, a freshman who portrays The Minstrel, said the message of the show is a simple one. “The message is centered around the cliché ‘be yourself.’ Winifred is very different from what people would expect a princess to be,” she remarked. “She’s a tomboy. She lived in a swamp.”

The cast members emphasized that the show is upbeat

and silly. “Expect a bunch of family fun and a lot of lighthearted jokes,” said Jordan Echterling, a junior who plays The Wizard.

Senior Noah Fitz agreed. “Come see this show for some great laughs,” said Noah, who plays Sir Harry. “It’s a show that’s easy to follow, and it’s really fun to watch.”

There’s always something happening on stage, Jordan noted, adding, “It’s a very visually interesting show.”

Noah said the show has been a lot of fun to perform. “We are really enjoying ourselves as a cast,” he commented. “We’re creating something on stage, and we invite the community

to come live the experience with us. We want to share it with them.”

“Once Upon a Mattress” features a cast and crew of 82 students. It is directed by Brianna Wilhelm, a 2017 Donegal graduate who also directed the fall

play, “Clue.” That production has been nominated for “Best Play” at the Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards, which will be presented in May. For tickets to “Once Upon a Mattress,” visit www.dpa.donegalsd.org.

Rothweiler-Foster earns doctorate

Jesse Rothweiler-Foster received a Doctor of Philosophy in psychology from Iowa State University,

Ames, Iowa, in December 2022.

Rothweiler-Foster is a resident of Mount Joy.

For some of the Chamber leaders, the role is a full-time job. For others, it’s something they do in addition to other employment. As a financial adviser for Edward Jones, Jona Green serves as head of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce on a volunteer basis, but she’s just as committed to that role as she is her paid job. “The biggest reward is absolutely the connection to our schools and community,” said Green, who has been leading her Chamber since March of 2022. “Our reach is large, but our heart is rooted in service and making more things possible for our members.”

Although each of the Chambers faces its own challenges, the directors all project positivity when it comes to their communities. “Right now, we see the biggest challenge for a number of our members to be finding enough employees,” said Kerry Meyers, who stepped down as executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce after more than 11 years and is now executive assistant to Zell. “And for our small shops in Mount Joy, it is getting customers in their doors. We need the community to support small local businesses.”

Liz Ackerman, who has been executive director of the

Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce since January of 2019, said her organization faces a challenge of keeping pace with expansion. “We are growing at an exponential rate,” she explained, noting that she values maintaining a close connection with all of the Chamber’s 430-plus members. “We pride ourselves on knowing every member’s name and understanding their needs.”

For some of the directors, being a female leader in the world of business has been a challenge they’ve faced with grace. “I have learned to embrace my leadership style and not shy away from opportunities to lead,” said Grove, noting that she attributes her success to surrounding herself with strong female role models. “Confidence in yourself is key. We all belong at the table, so be brave enough to pull up a chair. If you are afraid, do it anyway.”

That’s a feeling Branle said she understands. “My worst enemy has always been the negative voice in my head, telling me to question my worthiness,” she stated. “If you, too, have a voice like that, learn to tell her to be quiet.”

As committed as they are to their Chambers, all of the

women have managed to find a work-life balance. Meyers has been married for 45 years and loves spending time with her two children and five grandchildren. Zell is raising a family of three with her husband, and they enjoy hiking and attending Faith Bible Fellowship Church. Valudes is the married mother of twin daughters, serves as secretary for the Paradise Township Lions Club and helps with Girl Scouts.
