The Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA) in cooperation with the Donegal Experiential Education Program (DEEP) will hold its 54th annual Spring Outdoor Show on Saturday, March 16, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Maytown Fire Department, 160 E. High St., Maytown. The event will include a pork barbecue, with the pork again cooked by DFCA member Harvey Schademan.

The outdoor show will feature exhibits from area sporting goods stores, fly tiers, rod and tackle makers, kayakers, angling guides, trappers, bowyers, conservation groups and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. The show will include a seminar

by Raven Ridge Animal Rescue, a seminar on fishing for catfish, and a talk on “Fishing Adventures in Iraq” by Army Capt. Joel Stewart.

Initiative Launched In Donegal Area To Foster Kindness On Feb. 14, the Donegal School Board issued a proclamation kicking off the Donegal community initiative known as “Love Your Neighbor.”

“What would be more appropriate than promoting a kindness campaign beginning on Valentine’s Day?” commented Christina Helfrick, a social worker in the district.

The idea for the “Love Your Neighbor” initiative began with the Donegal Performing Arts Club. When the club chose Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” as its spring musical, some community members voiced concerns about racially insensitive lines and actions in the show. Rather than choosing another musical, the club decided to honor the history of theater and use that history to address the issue head-on.

The Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) is holding its 45th annual tree seedling sale. Orders for conifers, hardwoods, wildlife food sources, groundcover, and pollinator-friendly perennials will be accepted through Monday, March 11. The preordered and prepaid plants will be ready for pickup on Thursday, April 11, in the auditorium at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

“That’s the weekend before Easter,” remarked education coordinator Sallie Gregory.

“Hopefully folks will consider purchasing (plants) to celebrate Easter and Earth Day, which is on April 22.”

Gregory explained that conservation districts were created in response to the Dust Bowl, in which windstorms caused massive soil erosion in the Midwest in the early 1930s. Men and boys employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) planted trees around the nation, including Pennsylvania, to reduce erosion, especially along streambanks.

The first Earth Day was observed in 1970, and the LCCD launched its first tree seedling sale in 1974 to celebrate Earth Day and honor the CCC. “It combined the effort to make trees available to everybody and conserve soil and waterways,” Gregory shared.

The tree sale has continued for nearly a half-century. It is the only fundraising event for the LCCD, which, as an annex to county government, receives some public funding as well as grants and private contributions. The funds are used to provide education and watershed programs, which are held in classrooms or on individual waterways where volunteers are working on stream cleanups, Gregory said. The education programs are available for teachers in kindergarten through grade 12, as well as college classes, and all lessons meet state standards for environment and ecology.

LCCD also works with classes to perform stream studies, which assess the health of a waterway by cataloging and counting plant, insect, and fish life.

There is a second, equally important reason for the seedling sale. “ We’re making trees and other plants accessible for county residents to put in the

soil to keep it in place so it doesn’t erode due to wind or rain,” Gregory said. Many of the plants also serve dual purposes, whether it is providing food for people or wildlife or acting as windbreaks or Christmas trees.

The sale organizers make sure they are offering as many native species as possible, and they work with area nurseries to get appropriate stock for the sale. New offerings this year include coralberry, which holds its bright berries through the start of winter, and three selfpollinating fruit trees: Montmorency sour cherry, Klondike white peach, and Coralstar peach.

The majority of trees on the sale list are bare root stock that will be dipped in a root preservative gel so that buyers will not have to plant their purchases immediately. As the trees are seedlings, the sale is also offering tubes with stakes designed to protect young plants from stressors and potential damage from deer,

moles, voles, and other creatures that would eat their roots or stems.

For more than two decades, the Scottish Rite Masons, Northern Jurisdiction, have helped to lead the national effort to support children and their families as they overcome the obstacles of dyslexia through their financial support of 45 active centers in 13 states.

Dyslexia is a neurologically based condition that affects language acquisition, processing, and decoding. Recent research suggests dyslexia affects up to 20 percent of the population, reported Children’s Dyslexia Center director Heather Hinkel. People with dyslexia typically have aboveaverage intelligence, but they can struggle in a traditional academic setting. Those who do not receive help can suffer devastating personal consequences; Hinkel noted that dyslexia tops the list of reasons teenagers drop out of school. Dyslexia is treatable with remediation.

Since 2002, the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster has tutored more than 175 students with a dyslexic profile. The center

serves children on a first-come, first-served basis regardless of race, ethnicity, economic status, or religious affiliation. While there is no fee to the students served, it costs the center approximately $5,000 to tutor one child for one year. The center also certifies adults as tutors in OrtonGillingham and each year offers four scholarships toward the cost of training.

Wrestlers Compete in District 3 Championships

The post-season has officially taken its toll on the trio of Donegal wrestlers that competed in the District Three 3A championships which were held February 22-23 at the old Hersheypark arena. Ethan Herr, Dylan Bowers, and Will Small all bowed out of competition in Friday’s opening rounds of wrestling

after dropping into the consolation bracket.

Bowers represented the only one of the three to advance past the opening round of 16 when he pulled off an impressive upset of South Western’s Kasey Doll at 126 pounds with a fall at 4:43. After falling behind 9-3 in the first two periods, Bowers scored a takedown 22 seconds into the third, eventually turning Doll and sticking

him for the win.

Things looked grim for Bowers after getting taken down early in the first period and fighting off his back to survive into the second, albeit trailing 5-0. Doll chose the down position and Bowers answered with a two-point nearfall of his own to make it 5-2 with 1:40 remaining, however a quick reversal by Doll made it 7-2. Bowers

eventually escaped, but a Doll takedown at the end of the period gave him the six-point advantage which Bowers nullified with the fall in the third.

The quarterfinals proved much less hospitable to Bowers, however, as J.J. Wilson of Cedar Cliff made short work of the Indian. Wilson transitioned an early takedown just 21 seconds into the bout into a fall at the 1:43 mark, sending Bowers into the consolations against Penn Manor’s Ty Grassel.

In their second-round battle, it was Grassel that gained the advantage, taking Bowers to his back twice in the second period for a total of six nearfall points to lead 8-0 heading into the third. Working from the bottom, Bowers scored a reversal with 1:29 remaining in the bout, however Grassel refused to be turned and eventually hit a late reversal himself to win 10-2.

Herr drew eventual silver medalist Mason Leiphart of Dover in his

first-round bout at 106 and struggled to find any traction.

Leiphart eventually earned a 15-0 technical fall with 30 seconds left in the third period and forced Herr into a first round consolation matchup with Reading’s Estevan Muniz.

Unleashing his frustration on Muniz, Herr surrendered only one takedown early in the first period before running up nine unanswered points to eventually win an 11-3 major decision. After reversing Muniz in the first to tie things up at 2-2, Herr scored the only points of the second period with a takedown and then transitioned a third period reversal into three nearfall points for a 9-2 advantage. A Muniz escape with 36 seconds remaining was answered 19 seconds later by Herr with another takedown which sealed the win.

Next up for Herr was a bout with Solanco’s Dominic Flatt which was

decided by only two points in a 3-1 decision for the Golden Mule.

Scoreless through the opening period, Herr secured the first point on an escape with 1:37 on the clock in the second for the 1-0 lead which held through to the third.

Flatt chose the bottom position and then proceeded to escape for the tie before securing a takedown for the win.

Wrestling at 170 pounds Small also drew a tough first round matchup, his coming against Chambersburg’s Luke Nichter who not only secured a 16-1 technical fall, but eventually earned a secondplace finish as well. Small’s consolation bout was with Lebanon’s Dallin Ocasio which was scoreless heading into the third period before Ocasio used an escape to take the 1-0 lead and then took Small down and turned him for two nearfall points and the 5-0 win.

Daughters of Zion is a group of ladies that meets at Zion Lutheran Church, 2 S. Hazel St., Manheim, with the mission to assist in church and community activities where there is a need.

The group, which has been meeting since 1942, currently has approximately 25 members.

One ongoing project is knitting and crocheting hats and scarves to be given to people in the Manheim area. This past year, the group worked with Manheim Central School District to provide a hat to every student enrolled in the backpack project.

According to group president Nadine Mazingo, 798 hats were made in 2018; about 175 of them went to the backpack project, and the rest were distributed among six other Manheim-area projects, including the Manheim Central Food Pantry and Barons’ Closet.

Group members also collect food donations for the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Other efforts have included purchasing coats to be included in the Blankets for Barons community project.

The ladies were also involved in providing personal care kits for Lutheran World Relief. As part of this effort, they donated the needed items and then assembled the kits at a meeting.

A team representing the AP Govern- D.C., to compete in the national “We the ment class at Elizabethtown Area High People” competition from Friday through School (EAHS) will travel to Washington, Monday, April 26 to 29. The EAHS team will represent the state of Pennsylvania at the competition, which is run by the Center for Civic Education.

Aevidum clubs in both Donegal High School and Donegal Junior High are hosting a variety of activities related to the initiative during the week of March 4 to 8, and high school students will share their message of kindness during assemblies at the elementary and junior high schools during the preview for “Anything Goes.”

Additionally, the National Art Honor Society has created a display showing the evolution of diversity and acceptance in theater history, which will be on display in the lobby during the run of the show.

In an effort to raise awareness in the community, the hashtag #donegalkind was created. Those who experience an act of kindness during the week are encouaged to post it to the Donegal HUB Facebook page using the hashtag. Every day

from March 4 to 8, the Donegal HUB will pick a winner - the person identified doing the act of kindness - and will feature the kind acts on the Facebook page. The Donegal HUB will award certificates and “Donegal Hugs” for acts of kindness.

“We’re hoping to see ‘Love Your Neighbor’ #donegalkind on signs throughout the community, as we are partnering to increase awareness and encourage others to get to know their neighbors just a little bit better during the upcoming weeks,” commented Helfrick.

Elizabethtown DeMolay members and advisers provided a coat check at the 11th annual Taste of Western Lancaster County, raising $500 for the Elizabethtown Public Library. DeMolay Chapter Supports Library Members and advisers of Elizabethtown Chapter, Order of DeMolay, assisted the Elizabethtown Rotary Club at the 11th annual Taste of Western Lancaster County, held at the Elizabethtown Public Library on Feb. 1. The DeMolay representatives provided a coat check service, assisted the vendors, and provided trash removal. As a part of the coat check, the DeMolays collected donations, rais-

ing $500 for the Elizabethtown Public Library.

One of the goals of the Order of DeMolay is teaching young men to be responsible and community-involved citizens, and the organization does this through a number of community service projects throughout the year. The DeMolay members partner with the Elizabethtown Rotary Club for its annual Christmas tree sales and the Taste of

Western Lancaster County event. DeMolay has been involved with the Taste of Western Lancaster County for all 11 years the event has been held, and the total donations to the library from the coat check amount to $3,975.

Mount Bethel Cemetery, 700 Locust St., Columbia, will hold a program, “Lucy’s Hair Work,” in the cottage on Sunday, March 10, from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

The workshop will focus on the Victorian-era tradition of making keepsakes from a loved one’s hair, especially someone who had died. Participants will learn how to create a Victorian hair flower, which they may make into a pin or display in a glass or wooden box, which will be available for purchase. Participants may bring their own hair, or they may use some that will be provided. If participants bring hair, it must be at least 10 inches in length and the diameter of a pencil, and it must be placed in a resealable bag.

The workshop will be led by Civil War re-enactor Lucy Cadwallder from York County.

While researching her hobby, she became interested in Victorian hair art and mourning customs. For 13 years, she has been perfecting the art of hair jewelry, which involves human hair intricately woven into bracelets, earrings, rings, and necklaces.
