Celebrating the outdoors
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Everything outdoors will be in the spotlight on Saturday, March 18, when the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA), in cooperation with Maytown-East Donegal Township Fire Department, holds the 56th annual Spring Outdoor Show. The event, which will also include a pork barbecue, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the fire department building, 160 E. High St., Maytown.
“The outdoor show really showcases a great variety of vendors,” said Brandon Crouser, DFCA president. “We have everything from fishing and hunting to local artists and local companies.” The show will also feature presentations from Katie Hollen of the Lebanon County Conservation District, Keith Williams from the Lancaster Conservancy and a representative of BreakLine Charters, who will discuss fishing for catfish. “The big attraction that I’m very excited about is between
Bringing joy to hospitalized children
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
It’s no fun for a child to be in the hospital, but thanks to Northwest EMS, pediatric hospital stays are a little happier. Northwest EMS collects toys for Child Life, an initiative that provides new toys to children who are hospitalized.
Northwest EMS started the partnership with Child Life in 2021. “Our office manager, Luci, had a granddaughter in the hospital in November
and December of 2020, and visits were limited,” explained Lori Shenk, community outreach manager for Northwest EMS. “Her granddaughter, Taylor, had a lot of anxiety about being there, but every day that Taylor was in the hospital, members of the Child Life team would visit her. They played cards with her, did puzzles, played board games, and they developed a friendship with her.” Taylor got to keep every toy and game she received during her stay.
11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The folks from Reptile Invasion are coming with all of their amazing little creatures,” Crouser commented. The show is free to attend, but all proceeds will go toward continuing restoration work on the Donegal Creek, supporting the club’s cooperative nursery and funding its annual kids’ fishing derby,
Club member Harvey Schademan, owner of Mount Joy-based Harvey’s Main Street BBQ, will provide the barbecue, which will be available as sandwiches or meals. The barbecue is only available by advance purchase, and tickets may be purchased from any member of DFCA by Saturday, March 11.
Not only does the outdoor show highlight a variety of activities, Crouser said, but it is also the DFCA’s biggest fundraiser.

held later in the spring. “This is our first post-pandemic show, and we are looking forward to having the community come out and enjoy the day with local talent from the community,” Crouser stated. “You can purchase items from vendors, purchase (giveaway) tickets to pick items from the donation table or just enjoy the demonstrations and Harvey’s BBQ.”
“We hope we get people to sign up for a DFCA yearly membership as they come in and help support our trout nursery program,” he commented. “That enables us to keep stocking these local creeks with trout and put on our kids’ fishing derby.”
For more information on the Spring Outdoor Show, contact Crouser at 717-538-4370 or brandoncrouser@gmail.com. More information on DFCA may be found at www.donegalcreek.org or on Facebook by searching for “Donegal Fish & Conservation Association.”
When the members of the Donegal Indians junior high cheer team perform, they’re doing much more than cheering, said head coach Kellye Herbert. “Cheer is a great sport to get involved in, because not only does it foster camaraderie, but it also challenges each cheerleader to their fullest mentally and physically,” she explained, adding, “and somehow they end up performing so that it looks easy.”
The 16-member team just wrapped up a successful season, including placing well in four nonPIAA competitions. “Starting in
November, we attended the Big Blue Battle at Manheim Township, taking first place,” Herbert noted. “Again in November, we attended the Exeter Eagles Cheer Challenge and took second place.” In January, the team participated in the Dallastown Showdown, placing second, and it finished out the season with a second-place finish at Fire and Ice, held at Spooky Nook Sports. While the team of seventh- and eighth-graders cheers for Donegal football and soccer in the fall and basketball and wrestling in the winter, participating in competitions was a new activity Herbert implemented this year. The Donegal Athletic Club (DAC), with support from the Donegal Cross-Country Booster Club, has announced its third annual Pride in the Tribe 5K Run. Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to join DAC on Saturday, March 18, at 9 a.m. in front of
the Donegal High School Athletic Complex in Mount Joy. A 100-yard dash will follow at 9:45 a.m. for children age 10 and younger.
Race-day registration and packet pickup will be from 8 to 8:45 a.m. The awards ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. or immediately following the kids’ run.
The registration fee will be discounted for those who sign up by Wednesday, March 8. T-shirts designed by a member of the cross-country team will be included while supplies last.

competitions were new to the team members, they met the challenge, she said. “This team is (now) no stranger to tough competitions, facing up to five or more teams at some of the competitions,” she remarked. “I couldn’t be more proud of their grit and grace.”
Herbert also emphasized the idea of community service with the team, noting that giving back to the community helps the team members see the results of their efforts beyond a sporting event. “We look forward to some trash cleanups in our local parks this spring,” Herbert stated.
The junior high cheer program, along with the varsity team, will hold a mini camp for students in kindergarten through grade six this spring,
and Herbert encourages anyone with an interest in the sport to attend. More information about the mini camp will be going out to students in all kindergarten through grade six buildings in the district.
Tryouts for the 2023-24 junior high team will be held later this month. A cheerleading clinic will be offered from Monday, March 27, through Wednesday, March 29, so the cheerleaders can learn the material, and then tryouts will be held on Saturday, April 1. Information on tryouts, including a registration packet, will be sent out through Donegal Junior High, but any questions about the cheer team may be addressed to Frank Hawkins, Donegal athletic director, at frank.hawkins@donegalsd.org.

“The Child Life team members would come in and distract her during procedures, and their presence made the biggest difference for her,” Shenk said. The then-10-yearold mentioned Child Life to her grandmother and suggested it might be a project Northwest EMS would like to take on.
All four Northwest EMS stations - in Maytown, Brickerville, Elizabethtown and Manheim - participate in the program. Toys are collected year-round at the stations, and Shenk delivers the collection to Penn State Health Children’s Hospital and Lancaster General Hospital throughout the year.
“Doing something like Child Life is important to us, because we want to support our community,” Shenk shared. She noted that the stations are always accepting donations of new, unwrapped toys for children age 17 and under. “It’s easy to pick up a toy to donate, and people
should not just think about what their child would like, but think about something any child would like,” she recommended. “The dollar store and other discount stores are excellent places to get activity books or craft supplies.” Other suggested donations include board books, Legos, dolls, DVDs, video games and Play-Doh.
“When someone drops off a donation, they should be sure to tell the person who receives it at the station that it’s for Child Life,” Shenk stated.
Northwest EMS stations are located in Maytown, 186 Rock Point Road; Brickerville, 10 Hopeland Road, Lititz; Elizabethtown, 380 W. Bainbridge St.; and Manheim, 60 W. Colebrook St.
For more information on the Child Life program or on making a donation, contact Shenk at 717371-8282 or lshenk@nwems86.org.

Indians fall in District opener against Warwick
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
Winning in basketball is comprised of many things.
Typically, among these factors are winning the rebounding game against your opponent and another is shooting baskets with a relatively high percentage of success.
For the Donegal boys’ basketball team, Monday evening’s game at Warwick, it was the Warriors who had the upper hand in rebounding while the Indians’ shooting percentage fell as the game went on.
The Indians thus ended their season with a 62-38 loss in the opening round of the District Three Class 5A boys’ basketball playoffs.
“We had a great start to the game, ending the first quarter
ahead 19-16,” Donegal head coach Ryan Shipper stated. “Unfortunately for us, we only scored 19 points throughout the next three quarters.”
Warwick outrebounded Donegal 39-24.
“We shot 19.5% from the floor for the game,” Shipper pointed out. “Warwick did a tremendous job defensively and shot the ball very well.”
On offense, Caleb Johnsen led Warwick with 16 points, including four treys and Ya’Majesty Washington added 12.
Evyan Patel and DeAndre White led the Indians, scoring nine points each. James Turbedsky scored seven.
Donegal’s 2022-23 campaign
featured victories that proved the team’s resilience throughout the regular season. The team finished strong, winning six of its final eight Lancaster-Lebanon League games. The Indians didn’t lose sight of their winning ways, waging that final stretch of eight games right after a 57-41 mid-January loss to Eastern York.
“I am pleased with the season as a whole,” said Shipper. “As a program, I believe we took a step in the right direction.”
While Patel and Turbedsky would be returning seniors next year, the program will say good-bye to this year’s seniors - Cole Hess, Noah Rohrer, Ezequiel Amaro, Dutch Good, Mason Pavelik and Eliezer Kabamba.
“We will miss our seniors and the leadership they’ve brought,” said Shipper. “But I’m excited to help develop our younger players into leaders and help them reach their goals.”
Warwick, the sixth-ranked team in the District Three 5A brackets, improved to 16-6, earning a spot in the quarterfinals. The Indians wrapped up their season at 14-9. WRESTLING
The Donegal wrestlers competed at the District Three Class 3A Section
Two tournament, which was held at Hempfield High School on Saturday, February 18. Senior Nicholai Brotzman claimed the gold medal at the 285-pound weight class while Dan Viselli earned silver at 215.
Ruben Mumper and sophomore Caidyn Leaf also advanced.
“Brotzman has been the heart and soul of our team all year on the mat,” said Nick Evans, the Indians’ coach. “He was confident going in. He went 3-0 and just looked really good.
“Hopefully, he will make the state tournament,” continued the coach.
After a 59 second quarterfinals pin, Brotzman pinned a victory over Treson Spahr of LampeterStrasburg, setting up the title bout against Caleb Mussmon of Hempfield.
“He beat Caleb in leagues by one point,” Evans recalled. “This time he separated. He had three takedowns, so it was nice win.”
Brotzman won it on a 6-2 decision.
Mumper earned third place at 152. He had qualified for regionals last year also.
After Mumper had majored Kaden Kemp of Township 12-4, Ryan Garvik of Central Dauphin won
on a fall in the semis.
“The Central Dauphin kid was ranked in the state,” Evans noted. “Ruben wrestled well.”
In the third-place match, he defeated Mason Bucks of Palmyra 6-3.
Leaf was one of the impressive Donegal sophomores at the tournament. In his first consolation match, he won a double overtime ride-out 2-1 against Gabe Sanchez of Warwick. Christian Burd of Hershey, who had sent Leaf to the consis with a 9-2 win, won the third-place match in a much closer 3-0 final.
In a battle between Viselli, a 10th-seeded sophomore, and Rayshawn Johnson, a senior from Susquehanna Township, the Donegal underclassman pinned 1:15 into the bout. He also posted a pin in the quarterfinals before battling to an 11-9 victory in the semis.
“It was a take ‘em down, reverse, back-and-forth match,” Evans said. “I was ecstatic.
“He then faced three-time section champ Jose Garcia, a senior from McCaskey and a two-time state qualifier,” Evans pointed out.
Garcia won the gold at 215 with a first-period pin.
To say the performance impressed the coach might be an understatement.
“Dan went 3-1 and that’s an amazing story,” said Evans. “I’ll probably use his story through the rest of my career at Donegal. He had a look about him that he wrestled without any pressure.”
Wrestling in the fifth-place match in the 121-pound weight class, Noah Hinkel worked a 10-2 major decision over Palmyra’s
Nathaniel Foltz.
“His weight class was the toughest in the tournament,” said the Donegal coach. “The top three kids in that weight class were all ranked in the state.
“Noah finished fifth, so he’s the alternate, added Evans, referring to qualifying for South Central 3A Regionals at Spring Grove.
Hinkel’s first loss came at the hands of the eventual champ, Marco Tocci of Warwick. In the consolations, he lost to Kamdyn Williams of Manheim Township before posting the victory over Foltz in the fifthplace match.
“Kamdyn Williams is tough,” Evans remarked. “He was wrestling in the quarterfinals and had to injury default out. He came back through and made it through to third. Had he not gotten injured, he would have been on the opposite side of us in the brackets.”
At 145, Landen Baughman opened with a 7-1 win only to be pitted against the top seeded Matt Repos of Central Dauphin. In the consis, Baughman fell to Ben Williams of Solanco.
Sergio Garcia (172) also went 12, opening with a 4-0 decision over Manheim Township’s Logan Martin. In a long battle with McCaskey’s Kevin Olavarria, Garcia was pinned at the 5:36 mark.
In the consolations, Jack Koons of Warwick outlasted Garcia 4-1. Donegal finished eighth with 95 team points. Central Dauphin, with four first-place and three secondplace finishers, was tops with 226.5 points while Manheim Central finished a distant second at 131.5.

Siloam Ethiopia will host a fundraiser meal at Ethiopian Evangelical Church, 175 Church St., Landisville, on Saturday, March 11, from noon to 4:30 p.m. Traditional Ethiopian meals will be available to purchase for curbside pick up, and proceeds from the event will benefit the nonprofit organization’s humanitarian efforts in Harar, Ethiopia.
Each meal will offer a choice of three Ethiopian dishes: doro wat, a spicy chicken stew; misir wat, containing spiced red lentils; atakilt wat, a cabbage and potato stew; and kik alicha, a stew with split peas. Injera, a type of Ethiopian flatbread, will be served with each dish.
Siloam Ethiopia’s founder, Wegayhu Ketema, recently returned from a five-week mission trip to Harar. The organization operates a free medical clinic for those in the city who are homeless or in need of treatment. Ketema was accompanied by Kari Oftedal, Jason Craig, Faith Higley and Patrick Engle of Community Fellowship Church in Lancaster. Community Fellowship Church has been financially supporting Siloam Ethiopia’s
projects and trips to Harar for the last three years.
Oftedal, who is a doctor at Lancaster General Health, saw 35 to 40 patients each day at the free clinic. “She was extraordinary with her compassion and her care,” Ketema said. Siloam Ethiopia also partnered with Vision Care Ethiopia, a ministry based in Landisville that seeks to meet the optical needs of those in Ethiopia. Ketema and the other volunteers sorted, cleaned and distributed 150 pairs of glasses to residents of Harar during their trip.
During the trip, the volunteers in the group also spent time engaging with a girls’ orphanage in Harar. Higley assisted with organizing the storage room and its contents and taught the girls at the orphanage how to fashion washable sanitary pads, as many of the girls often cannot afford disposable ones. Engle helped to construct shelves for the storage room, and each member of the team spent time engaging with the kids at the orphanage.
“We wanted to spend time bonding with the kids and letting them know that they’re cared for,” Ketema said. “Every morning we had breakfast with them and take them out of
the orphanage for a little while.”
Ketema arrived in Harar ahead of the other volunteers to prepare for the various projects that they would be working on. This is the first time that Ketema has been joined by a team of volunteers to assist with the clinic and orphanage, and the rest of the team spent a total of 10 days in Harar.
To reserve a meal for the fundraiser, call 717-669-0930. For more information on Siloam Ethiopia, visit https://siloamethio.netlify.app/.
