A helping hand for furry friends
BY CATHY MOLITORIS“Times are hard on a lot of people. Nobody should have to decide between feeding themselves or their pets,” said Heather BullerGrady. Determined to help, the Mount Joy woman took action. In January, she opened a free pet pantry at her house, 210 Mount Joy St., where anyone can pick up cat food, dog food, pellet litter and even toys for their pets.

Buller-Grady got the idea for the free pantry during COVID, when she had trouble finding pet food for her own pets. “Sometimes our animals liked it, and other times, not so much,” she said. “I decided rather than waste it, maybe someone could use it.” She’s also active with trap, neuter and return (TNR) of feral cats in her community. “I had noticed while doing TNR in Mount Joy, I was finding several friendly cats,” she recalled. “I kept wondering if they had been released outside to find their own food. Could people not afford to keep them? My hope is to help people in need or

Paden, executive director of Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS), describes the organization’s annual banquet as an inspiring night. “It’s a time of fellowship and connection,” she stated. “It’s a great way to get to understand the heart behind our mission here at REYS and a great way to get connected with other community members.” REYS will hold its banquet on Friday, March 17, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim.
The keynote speaker for the event will be Garrett Lowe, leadership development coach with BCM International. BCM, which stands for Bible Centered Ministries, has a mission to reach children and build

up the church, Paden explained, and the organization completes mission work all over the world. Prior to joining BCM, Lowe served as a leadership coach and consultant. REYS worked with Lowe in the past in a coaching capacity, Paden said, adding, “He worked with us to help us develop our core values as an organization. To have someone who knows us really well serve as our keynote speaker is really exciting.”
The banquet will also include a catered meal provided by Hess’s Barbecue Catering, along with hamloaf donated by Gene Wenger’s.
“ We’ll have a time of ministry updates, including an interview video from one of our families so guests will be able to hear directly how a family has been impacted by REYS in the past year,” Paden said.
Located in Mount Joy, REYS provides after-school programming with a Christian focus to students in grades one through 12. “It’s been a great year for REYS,” Paden remarked. “We’ve seen a lot of new students and a lot of new people getting involved in REYS. We’ve strengthened our relationships with Donegal School District this past year as well.”
Tickets to the banquet are free. Funds are raised through sponsorships and donations at the event. Paden noted that REYS is still looking for banquet sponsors. Reservations are required for the banquet on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority will be given to people who register by Friday, March 3. Going old school for a cause
BY CATHY MOLITORISIf the winter blues have you feeling low, head out for a fun night guaranteed to raise your spirits. Iron-Leg Corp. will host a Back to the ’70s and ’80s Dance Party on Saturday, March 11. The event will be held at Club Twenty3, 1703 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, from 7 p.m. to midnight.
“Come out, dust off your platform shoes and help support a great cause,” said Sean Laukhuff, vice president of Iron-Leg. “Come enjoy the night with friends and dancing and just let loose.”
The festivities will feature ’70s
and ’80s music from a DJ, a photo booth, a signature Iron-Leg drink and a silent auction. “We’ll have lots of sports memorabilia, memorabilia from the ’70s and ’80s and really something for everyone at the auction,” Laukhuff commented. People are encouraged to come in their best ’70s and ’80s costumes, and a costume contest will be held. “ We’ll award prizes for the best male, best female and best couple,” Laukhuff noted.
Proceeds from the party will benefit Iron-Leg Corp., a Lancasterbased nonprofit organization that raises funds for children in need of prosthetics. The organization was

started by Matt Millhouse and Laukhuff, who were looking for a way to give back to the community when they realized they could raise funds for a cause close to home. Millhouse’s son, Parker, was born without a right leg, so Millhouse and Laukhuff created Iron-Leg in 2020, named in Parker’s honor. The organization has a mission of not only paying for high-end prosthetics for children and youths age 18 and younger, but also making sure recipients receive therapy to learn how to use them. IronLeg has helped children in Lancaster and York counties,

raising thousands of dollars. Each prosthetic can cost between $5,000 and $50,000.
Last year’s dance party, held at The Village Nightclub, raised close to $10,000, a goal Laukhuff hopes to meet again this year. Additional fundraisers for the organization include a golf tournament and a car show.

Laukhuff noted that IronLeg is looking for board members who have a passion for making a difference in a child’s life. “If you have a heart for community and a desire to give back, we’d love to talk to you,” he said.

In the meantime, he hopes

who are just having a hard time for that moment and help people not have to choose between the food they need and the food their animals might need.”
After setting up a donation box on her porch, BullerGrady put out a call on Facebook asking for donations. “The response was great, and I have yet to run empty,” she said. “I break down the large bags of food into gallon-size Ziploc bags so it could help more people.” Bags are labeled to note if they contain dog food or cat food.
The pantry is open all the time, she said. “The porch light turns off around midnight, but just stop by and get what you need,” she stated. “I run it on the honor system and no questions asked. No need to feel embarrassed.”
Although the pantry is

located in Mount Joy, BullerGrady noted that it’s open to anyone in surrounding communities, including Manheim, Elizabethtown, Bainbridge, Maytown and Marietta.

“In this economy, it takes a village,” she remarked. “If we as a community can help relieve someone else’s stress of just helping to feed their pets, hopefully it can keep pets in their homes and out of shelters or released on the streets.”

She noted that all donations of any size are appreciated, adding, “If the food you got your pet isn’t working, please consider donating it. Someone else could surely use it.”
Donations may be dropped off at 210 Mount Joy St., Mount Joy. For more information, email Mtjoypetfood pantry@gmail.com.

“If we dance a dance in Manheim, the same dance is being danced the same way in London or Berlin or anywhere in the world where there is a

branch of Scottish country dancers,” said Sandy Leyh, a teacher with the Red Rose Scottish Country Dancers. If you’d like to be a part of an international activity, now’s your chance. The group will hold four weeks of basic classes on Tuesdays from March 7 through 28. The classes will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Manheim Train Station, 210 S. Charlotte St.
“You do not need any experience at all to enjoy this,” Leyh stated. “You don’t have to come with a partner. … At the basics class, we’re going to learn the footwork involved with Scottish country dance.” She said the classes will also feature party dances called ceilidh to break the ice. “We’ll use those as warmups for fun to get people moving, and then we’ll learn one of the steps and put it into some easy dances,” she explained. Members of the Red Rose Scottish Country Dancers teach reels and jigs, which are

With the District Three wrestling tournament a little over a week away, the Donegal squad wrapped up the regular season with a match at Solanco on Thursday, February 9.

In a match that netted relatively few points by actual competition, Donegal downed Solanco 37-33. The Indians had to forfeit the first four weight classes while the Mules gave up 18 uncontested points by forfeits at the 189- 215- and 285pound weight classes.
In between, Ben Viselli’s 14-1 major decision got Donegal on the board following the aforementioned four forfeits. Landen Baughman decisioned Ben Williams 3-1 at 145 while both Ruben Mumper (152) and Caidyn Leaf (160) registered pins in their weight classes, cutting the deficit to 30-19 at that point.
Segio Garcia came up short in a 4-0 loss to Blaine Plastino in the 172-pound bout. His brother Scott Garcia picked up six points in the 189-pound forfeit while Dan Viselli (215) and
Donegal matmen top Solanco, 37-33

Nicholai Brotzman wrapped up the come-from-behind victory with 12 more unanswered, uncontested points.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL

In its 65-56 defeat of Section Three rival Elco on Thursday night, February 9, the Donegal boys’ basketball team finished the regular season with a threegame winning streak. The Indians, who improved to 14-8 (8-4 league) won six of their final eight games, gaining momentum for the District Three Class 5A playoffs.
“There was obviously a lot on the line for us in the Elco game,” said Donegal head coach Ryan Shipper. “Elco came out ready to play. They made things very difficult for us, but we were able to regroup at halftime and make a few adjustments defensively.”
The defensive adjustment translated into the Raiders only scoring three points in the third quarter. The Indians increased their slim one-point halftime edge to a 49-36 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
“We concentrated on our defensive principles and ultimately took them out of

rhythm in the third quarter,” Shipper said. “Thankfully, we were able to convert on their turnovers and get some baskets in transition.”
Evyan Patel was one of the players converting the opportunities on the offensive end for Donegal. Patel swooshed in four three-point buckets and finished with a game high 19 points. Noah Rohrer and Sawyer Floyd each poured in 11 points while Cole Hess scored nine.
“Cole Hess provides a spark off the bench,” said Shipper. “He does a great job rebounding and finishing around the basket. He’s a very versatile defender and does great in his role.”
Dallas Georrge led the Raiders with 14 points.
“We did a great job of sharing the ball and finding open shooters - especially in the second half,” Shipper added. “Patel and Floyd were able to knock down some threes. They both did a lot of great things on the defensive end too.
“We’re at our best when everyone is defending and rebounding,” added the coach.
The Indians finished 12th in the Class 5A power rankings. Manheim Central and Lampeter-Strasburg earned the top two spots.
“Our focus since the last week of January has been making sure we are improving as a team,” Shipper explained. “The players have continued to push themselves and continue to believe in each other. I love where our team is and the way we’re playing heading into the playoffs.”
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The Indians wrapped up the 2022-23 basketball season on Thursday, February 9. Hoping to register their first league victory, the Indians visited Elco.
Despite inching closer in the second quarter and trailing by only eight points at the half, the Indians were unable to muster up much offense in the second half of this 60-21 defeat. The Indians fell to 3-19 (0-10 in league) while the Raiders improved to .500 at 11-11 (6-4 league).
SWIMMING
Donegal had five swimmers compete in the L-L League Swimming & Diving Championships, which were held at Wilson High School’s Roy G. Sny-

der Natatorium on Friday and Saturday, February 10-11. Seniors Kylie Wilkinson, Sierra Houck and Emma Myers joined sophomore Haley Leibfried and freshman Thomas Dohl.
“Kylie and Sierra look to return to states and to bring Emma Myers along,” Indians coach Isaac Greene said, referring to the PIAA championships, March 14-16 at Bucknell University.
On Friday, Wilkinson medaled in the 200-yard freestyle, taking fifth place with a personal best (2:01.55) on the year. She also went on to achieve a personal best in the 100 free on Saturday, finishing in 56.66 seconds.
Houck medaled in both of her events, placing third in the 50 free on Friday. She did so in 25.01 seconds. She earned fourth in the 100 free (55.07) on Saturday.
“Emma Myers achieved her season best times in the 200 free and the 500 free,” Greene pointed out, referring to the respective times of 2:06.31 and 5:42.79.
Leibfried swam the 200 individual medley at a 2:25.02 clip, which was a season best. She also got a personal best
(1:06.61) in the 100 backstroke.
“Dohl competed in the 100 fly and achieved his season best of 1:02.44,” Greene noted.
BOWLING
Paul Stubenrauch has been working with Donegal youngsters as the school’s bowling club team works toward establishing a Lancaster-Lebanon League seat in the sport.
“The school is fully behind it,” Stubenrauch said. “Frank Hawkins, the Director of Athletics, has been instrumental in getting the program off the ground.”
The bowlers had two kids qualify for the L-L League singles tournament - sophomore Cooper Palmer and junior Will Winders.
“The only thing we compete for is positions in the league’s singles playoffs,” Stubenrauch explained. “We’ve played 14 matches as a team this season,” he added. “In the last game of our season, we shot a season high 2,855 as a team. We had started the season at 2,500. I have to credit our coaching staff
- Alan Shepard, Diane Kitch and Bob Miller, Jr.”
Stubenrauch also gave credit to a pair of underclassmen who have improved with good coaching.
“Freshman Mike Berg is an up-and-coming bowler who has raised his average 40 pins since the start of the year,” said the coach. “Derek Irwin, a sophomore, has improved his average 40 to 50 pins.”
The team has been bowling mainly at Clearview Lanes on Main Street in Mount Joy.
“We have received great support from Clearview Lanes,” Stubenrauch added.

Not easily broken
Dayspring Christian Academy’s Remember America Speaker Series team makes decisions based in prayer and with reverence to Scripture. The choice of three speakers for this year’s event is rooted in Ecclesiastes 4:12, which reads in part, “A three-ply cord is not easily broken.”

“Our team started thinking about how our school is in partnership with parents and churches in educating our children,” said Lisa Becker, events manager with Dayspring, which is located in Mountville. That threestrand cord of family, church, and education became the basis for this year’s banquet, with a speaker chosen to represent each of the three strands.
The 2023 Remember America Speaker Series banquet will be held at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 29. The featured speakers will be author and Fox News host Pete Hegseth, speaking on education; actor Kirk Cameron, speaking on family; and worship leader Sean

Feucht, speaking on the role of the church.
Hegseth came to the attention of the Dayspring team when a school staff member read his book “Battle for the American Mind: Uprooting a Century of Miseducation.”

Dayspring headmaster Dan Stone explained that the first community schools in America were instituted for the purpose of teaching children to read in order that they might learn from the Word of God. “In a Christian society … the community schools taught Christian values,” said Stone, who added that changes in education began to occur in the 20th century. Hegseth’s book outlines those changes and proposes classical Christian education as a remedy. “As a Principle Approach school, there are elements of classical education (at Dayspring),” noted Stone.
Cameron is well-known for his part in the sitcom “Growing Pains” and for several family-focused films. Most recently, Cameron’s “American Campfire Revival” has

encouraged the family of faith to embrace principles that may bring blessing to America.
Feucht is a worship leader, author, and missionary.
“W hen it comes to the church, few voices have been as loud in calling God’s people to engage the culture and redeem it for Christ,” said Stone.
“It all ties together,” said Becker of the three speakers. “The mission of the Remember America Speaker Series is to remind Americans of their
unique heritage of liberty that was founded upon biblical principles. We felt that a three-strand cord is one we wanted to illuminate … to bring people together.”
Dayspring senior Caroline Hostetter of Pequea Township will also present her winning oratory, “America: A Legacy of Honor and Liberty,” at the banquet.
Tickets to the event may be purchased at www.Dayspring Christian.com. Readers who wish to sponsor a table may call 717-285-2000, ext. 211.

Dancing frompg 3

fast dances, as well as strathspeys, which are slower dances.

Leyh has been involved in Scottish country dancing since she saw a demonstration more than 25 years ago in Elizabethtown. “I fell in love with it,” she recalled. “I thought, ‘Wow! I want to do this!’” She joined a group in Harrisburg, but when the group realized a lot of the members were making the drive from Lancaster, someone suggested they start a local group. “They appointed me to do that, and I thought, ‘ Well, we’ll give it a go. It won’t work,’” she said with a laugh. “Our club actually marked our 25th anniversary during COVID.”
Leyh said she loves many things about Scottish country dancing. “It’s a neat activity, it’s fun and social, and it’s great exercise. It’s really good mental and physical exercise,” she noted, adding that she has participated in workshops and dances throughout the region as well as in other parts of the world. “We are a very hospitable group. You

always know you’re welcome.”
Leyh emphasized Manheim is a particularly cool place to try Scottish country dancing, because the region was settled by Scots. “This is part of our heritage,” she stated. “Scots have always done this type of dancing.” All of the dances taught by the Red Rose Scottish Country Dancers come from books published by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, and new dances are written every year.
“I like to encourage young people to come out and try this,” Leyh commented. “It’s a nice way to meet other young people with a common interest. ... Everyone should give it a try. If you like music, if you like moving, getting some exercise and meeting new people, come join us. It takes a while to get really comfortable with it, but we’re patient.”

Participants should wear soft-soled shoes and wear a mask to classes. For more information or to register for classes, call Leyh at 717615-7511.

Gear up to make summer memories
BY CATHY MOLITORISIf you’re looking for a fun summer experience for your school-age child, look no further than GEARS summer camp. This year’s camp, Soaring Towards the Future, will run from Monday, June 5, through Wednesday, Aug. 23. Camp will be held at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar
St., Elizabethtown, for preschoolers and kindergartners, and it will run at East High Street Elementary School, 800 E. High St., for students in grades one through five. Camp will run weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“Our theme this year is transportation and careers,” said Wendy Musser, director of the GEARS Kids Center.
“Every week, we’re going to be learning
about different careers and everything that goes into that career, like the trucks and vehicles driven by different professions.” Weeks will focus on ambulance drivers, construction workers, farmers, airplane pilots and even astronauts, she said.
GEARS has been offering summer camp since 1989, Musser stated, noting that the program fills a void in the
community. “We know that there’s a need for parents who work over the summer to have a safe place for their children to go,” she stated. “It’s also an opportunity for the kids to meet new friends, practice socialization skills and have an educational experience.”
Along with activities at the two camp locations, campers will be treated to field trips throughout the summer, Musser said. Past trips have included visits to Lake Tobias Wildlife Park, Tiny Town, local

Elizabethtown Fair named Fair of the Year
The Elizabethtown Fair was recently named Fair of the Year in its geographical zone by the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF). A plaque was presented at the annual PSACF banquet during the State Convention, held from Jan. 18 through 21 at the Hershey Lodge. The Elizabethtown Fair was chosen from the 29 fairs in Zone 4 of PSACF, which comprises a total of 108 fairs across the state.
Another aspect of the State Convention was the Communications Competition, which featured a variety of categories for all fairs to enter. At the Communications
Breakfast, PSACF announced that the Elizabethtown Fair was the champion in the Placemat category for its entry prepared by Freedom Graphics, incorporating pictures taken by Rachel George and a cover painting by Nancy Landis. Additionally, the Elizabethtown Fair placed second for its premium tabloid prepared by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., and second for its premium book prepared by Freedom Graphics and Sally Nolt.
Abigail Nissley, 2022 Elizabethtown Fair queen, represented her local fair in the State Fair Queen Competition, held from Jan. 19 to
21 during the convention. She competed against 59 fair queens from across Pennsylvania.
Officers and directors of the Elizabethtown Fair Committee also participated in the convention, where they attended workshops and seminars.
The 2023 Elizabethtown Fair will be held from Monday to Saturday, Aug. 21 to 26. A tentative schedule and premium list will be available in midFebruary at www.etownfair.com.
The Elizabethtown Fair Board meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Elizabethtown BIC Church, 996 E. High St. The public is invited to attend.
