Celebrate Seuss At The Library
BY CATHY MOLITORISHe’s given us Thing One and Thing Two, Sam I Am and Cindy Lou Who. Now you can honor the man behind these characters at Celebrate Seuss. The event will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday,
March 3, at Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy.

Celebrate Seuss is an opportunity to mark the birthday of Dr. Seuss, and it will provide fun for the whole family, said Jan Betty, director of children and youth at the library.

BY CATHY MOLITORISParents of young children, have you ever wished your kids wouldn’t outgrow their shoes so quickly? Well, thanks to the ingenuity of two Kraybill Mennonite School students, help is here. Seventh-graders Russell Schaefer and Jayvian Girom have invented Little Big Foot, an extendable baby shoe. You can’t really buy the product - yet - but you can see a prototype in action and learn all about the students’ invention at Kraybill’s Middle School Project Night. The event will be held on Friday, Feb. 17, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the school, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy.
For the project night, seventh-grade students were charged with inventing something that solved a problem, an idea inspired by the TV show “Shark Tank.” “It had to be an original idea that had not already been patented,” Russell explained. The students

were also inspired by the book “Freak the Mighty,” which tells the story of a boy who builds creative inventions.
Sixth-grade students at Kraybill will be showcasing projects they created based on a book of their choice. Sixth-grader Lily Martin created a menu inspired by “The Island” and classmate Gibson Melhorn read “The Swiss Family Robinson” and then created a diorama of the family’s treehouse.
Eighth-grade students designed food trucks based on books they read, and they will be serving up samples at the project night. Abby Keller, AJ Herr and Emma Lewis created a food truck called Cookin’ by the Fire, based on the book “Touching Spirit Bear.” It will serve sausage pasta and a berry spritzer made with berries native to Alaska, where the book is set.
Eighth-graders Riley Patrick and Abigail Heisey read “Trouble” and created a food truck called Chouan’s

Culinary Kitchen. The truck is named for the main character and decorated with flowers and symbols to represent Cambodia, the character’s homeland. “We’ll be serving bai sach chrouk, which is a Cambodian dish with rice, pickled vegetables and marinated pork,” Riley said. “We’re serving it with a traditional Cambodian iced coffee.”
Language arts teacher Curry Snell said the Middle School Project Night serves several purposes. Not only does it provide hands-on learning opportunities, but it also focuses on written and oral communication, reading and collaboration.

“Each year builds on the skills the students use,” Snell explained, noting that sixth-graders make independent projects, while seventh-graders can work with a classmate or alone and need to be able to discuss their project with visitors. Eighth-grade students work in groups to complete their project, and they will give oral presentations to all of the

guests at the project night. “The evening also has a competitive element,” Snell noted, adding that people will have a chance to vote for their favorite projects among the seventh- and eighth-graders in a variety of categories.
Jayvian summed up the feelings of his classmates when he said the project was a lot of fun, noting, “This was a cool opportunity to make something creative and so

much better than a boring old school project.”

The Middle School Project Night is open to the public. Kraybill Mennonite School will also hold a game night and open house on Friday, March 17, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., featuring food trucks, board games, a cornhole tournament, a pickleball tournament and more. For more information, call 717-6535236 or email office@kraybill mennonite.org.

Calling all superheroes - and their moms. GEARS will hold its annual Mother/Son Super Hero Bowling event on Saturday, March 4, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Clearview Lanes, 1990 W. Main St., Mount Joy. Preregistration is required and limited on a first-come, first served-basis. The registration deadline is Sunday, Feb. 26.

“This is a fun and unique event, and it’s a really good opportunity for mothers and sons to bond,” said Erin Thomas, GEARS administrative assistant. “Sometimes, mothers and sons get left out, since we do things like our Daddy/Daughter Dance. This is a way to include them.”

Thomas noted that people come dressed up in a variety of superhero costumes. “We’ve had people who go all out and get their makeup done,” she stated. “We have people who come in store-bought costumes, and we have people who come in homemade outfits.”

The event will feature a variety of games and contests, including a costume contest with prizes. “We also have a prize train that runs a couple of times throughout the event and picks a random participant, and they are able to get a prize,” Thomas commented.

GEARS began offering a bowling event for mothers and sons in 2016, but added the superhero theme two years ago, said Karen Eberly, senior program coordinator. “We have done other mother/son events, like a safari, and we tried mother/son roller-skating,” she recalled. “Bowling seemed to generate the most interest, so we’re sticking with that.” In the past, GEARS also held a mother/son fall ball, a more formal

“People will come in and pick up their treasure bag in the community room, and then they’ll be sent out into the library to follow a path to different activity stations,” Betty explained. Activities at each station will be for people of all ages, she noted, adding, “They can be tweaked to be more challenging or less challenging, depending on the age of the child.” Although the activities will be geared toward children, Betty encourages families to participate in Celebrate Seuss together. “The whole idea is to be together as a family and to have fun as a family,” she shared.
Along the way to activities, participants will meet a variety of Dr. Seuss characters, including the Cat in the Hat, Horton, the Fox in Socks, the Grinch and Gertrude McFuzz. Characters are made possible due to sponsorship by the Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems, Betty said, and club members will be on hand to help with the event. Members of Donegal High School’s Key Club and Donegal Junior High’s Builders Club will also volunteer at the event.

Betty said it’s been a year of growth for the library, noting, “We have had a huge influx of new families coming into the library in the past year.” Events like Celebrate Seuss bring families together for a fun evening

out, she said, noting that the Seuss program replaced a green eggs and ham breakfast the library held pre-pandemic.

“Celebrate Seuss is a great time for all ages,” Betty said. “We’re all about family here at the library, and this is a fun, family event. It’s a nice time to
get together with others in your community.”

Tickets for Celebrate Seuss are on sale at the library and are available for specific start times to reduce crowds during the event. For more information, visit https://mslibrary.org.

Donegal Girls Host Cocalico in Section 3 Action

Going for the first LancasterLebanon League win of the season, the Donegal girls’ basketball team came away empty on Tuesday, February 7. The Indians played host to Cocalico, keeping pace with the Eagles for the first half of the contest. The Eagles (9-12) pulled away eventually, posting a 46-23 victory.
Donegal (3-18) is 0-9 in Section Three.

Bella Mackison and Mia Wissler led the Indians in scoring. They both tallied seven
points, each scoring a threepoint basket in the process. Remy White finished with four points.
Teagan Sahm of Cocalico led all scorers with 23 points.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Having won three of their last five games, the Indians traveled to Cocalico for a Section Three showdown in boys’ basketball action on Tuesday, February 7.
The Indians kept their postseason hopes alive, defeating the Eagles 67-45. With their 138 mark, the Indians are holding

on to the 14th and final spot in the District Three 5A power rankings.

“We had a great team win at Cocalico,” Ryan Shipper, the Donegal head coach, said. “We had four players score in double figures.”
Noah Rohrer (15 pts), Sawyer Floyd (14 pts) Evyan Patel (13 pts) and DeAndre White (10 pts) each tallied two three-point baskets.
“Our emphasis was on finishing around the basket as well as rebounding,” continued the coach. “We scored 28 points in the paint.
“We shot 50 percent from the field and held them to 34 percent,” Shipper added. “We competed and defended well, which ultimately led to us coming out on top.”

Cocalico’s Tyler Hambright led all scorers with his 16-point performance. The Eagles fell to
7-14 (4-7 league). Donegal improved to 7-4 in the L-L League.
One week earlier, Donegal had stopped the proverbial bleeding by beating Northern Lebanon 65-48 on the road. This important win came after a brief two-game skid.

“That was a difficult week for us,” Shipper admitted. “We had back-to-back losses and falling out of the league playoff race.
“Give credit to our players for bouncing back,” he added. “We had a great turnaround, winning at Northern Lebanon, which is a tough place to play.”
Floyd and Patel led the team with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Nathan McKnight finished with 10 points.
“We did a good job of sharing the ball,” said Shipper. “We had 13 assists as a team. Evyan Patel and Sawyer Floyd led us in scoring.”

event similar to its Daddy/Daughter Dance, but it hasn’t been held since the pandemic began, although Eberly noted GEARS may bring it back at some point.

The mother/son bowling will feature unlimited games of bowling, along with pizza and drinks for participants. “We have a selfie booth we put up,

and it’s really cool to see all the pictures on Facebook after an event like this,” Eberly said. “It’s just a lot of fun.”

There is a fee per mother/son couple for the event, with a discounted additional fee for additional sons. To register or for more information, visit www.getintogears.org or call 717-367-0355.

from Friday, Feb. 17, through Sunday, Feb. 26.
“Brighton Beach Memoirs” was written by Neil Simon and tells the story of a Jewish family in 1930s New York. It’s told from the perspective of Eugene Jerome, a teen who narrates the play. “He’s anxious to get out and get on with his life, and he thinks he’s ready to do that,” said McDonald, who portrays Jerome.

Niki Boyer Swatski, who plays Jerome’s mother, Kate, said the show includes moments that will get audiences thinking. “A lot of heavy real-life issues come to the surface,” she explained. “It’s set in the 1930s, but the issues facing this family still ring true today.”
Lauri Lewis, who plays Eugene’s aunt, Blanche, agreed, noting that audiences will be able to relate to the

characters on stage. “Almost everyone in the audience is going to say, ‘I’ve had that fight before with my family members’ or ‘I’ve had that discussion,’” she stated, joking, “People will see this show and think, ‘My family isn’t so bad.’”
The play features of a cast of seven, four of whom are under the age of 18, noted director Michael Swanson. Rounding out the cast are Craig Copas, Elliot Evans, Carly Evans and Molly Weiler.

“Brighton Beach Memoirs” is an autobiographical story, Swanson stated, adding that it’s the first in a trilogy of plays Simon wrote about his
life. “It’s a depiction of Simon’s youth and members of his family, probably with a rosier glow than reality,” he remarked. “It’s a sort of idealized version of his family.”

The show marks Swanson’s first time directing at Susquehanna Stage, although he has directed this play elsewhere.
Themes of the show include not only family but also the idea of striking out on your own, McDonald said. “I think audiences will leave the play pondering what they maybe took for granted in their lives,” he shared. “Jerome is eager to get away from his family, but then he realizes that his life is not the

The Glatfelter Memorial Field Trust board of directors now seeks your help in completing the restoration, with donations sought for a plaque that will be unveiled at the entrance to the gate during a dedication ceremony on Sunday, June 4, at 2 p.m. Donations of $1,000 and over will be recognized on the plaque, which will stand to the left of the gate as visitors enter the park. The deadline for donations is Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Robin Gamby, a member of the board of directors, emphasized that the committee will happily accept donations of any size to support the project. To date, over 78% of the project is funded, she stated, explaining that although the gate is complete, money is still needed to cover the costs of the restoration.

VALUABLE BRICK & VINYL
The brick entrance to the park was built in 1937 by the Glatfelter family in honor of Lt. Richard Glatfelter, a graduate of Columbia High School and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He died in a car accident during his first assignment at Fort Dix, N.J. His father, David L. Glatfelter, donated the land to memorialize his son. The field was built by the Works Progress Administration during the Depression. At that time, in addition to the main gate, a grandstand was constructed, and the grading of a football field, a baseball field and tennis courts was completed. Landscaping on the grounds included dwarf maple trees and large sycamore trees, many of which still stand today. The property currently includes five baseball fields, a football field, tennis courts that have been converted into a street hockey rink, a track and a pavilion. Since the early 1960s, the field has also served as the home of CBAA.
Along with Gamby, members of the board include Bill Kloidt, Kevin Kraft, Carl Glatfelter and Andy Ohrel. Audrey Kuhn is the honorary chairperson of the fund drive. In addition to the fund drive for the plaque, the group will hold a Food Truck Extravaganza and Old-Fashioned Day on Saturday, May 6, at the field, as well as a golf outing in September. Both will be fundraisers for the project.
