SPAGHETTI DINNER
St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 27 E. Main St., Mount Joy, will serve a free baked spaghetti dinner on Sunday, Feb. 16, from 4 to 5 p.m. In addition to spaghetti, the meal will include applesauce, bread and butter, dessert, and beverages. The church’s free community dinners provide not only homecooked meals, but also a time for fellowship. Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) will perform Katori Hall’s critically acclaimed two-person drama “The Mountaintop” on select dates from Friday, Feb. 14, to Sunday, Feb. 23, in the Eater Theater at the Marietta Center for the Arts, 133 W. Market St., Marietta. Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14 and 15, and Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Feb. 20, 21, and 22. Matinee shows will begin at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 16 and 23. “The Mountaintop” is Hall’s fictional retelling of how the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spent his
last night on Earth before his assassination. The 90-minute drama is set entirely in one room at The Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn., on April 3, 1968, and will star Jeremy R. Patterson as King and Pilisa Nicolette Mackey as Camae. King is working on a speech when Camae, a maid working at the motel, interrupts to deliver his coffee. A conversation ensues examining King’s achievements, failures, and unfinished dreams. Everence Schedules Maytown Square To Undergo Stewardship University 2020 Walkway Restoration By Chelsea Peifer

Lynette Morales, the Everence church relations representative who coordinates Stewardship University, wants Lancaster County residents to know that the yearly event is not just about money. “It is a day of holistic stewardship,” said Morales, who noted that the workshops offered are designed to answer questions like: What does it mean to be a good steward of the Gospel? Or of the gifts God has given me? Stewardship University 2020 will be held on Saturday, March 7, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The walkways in the historic Maytown Square are about to get an update thanks to the efforts of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809 of Maytown. Auxiliary members invite everyone to purchase personalized, engraved bricks that will then be permanently installed in the new walkways. Auxiliary president Sara Gutshall said that the new brick walkways are tentatively set to be installed in mid-April by Mariettabased Tom Jones Landscape and Lawncare using bricks supplied by Drohan Brick and Hardscaping in Mount Joy. Gutshall noted that using bricks for the walkways also bears historical significance to the history of Maytown, which See Maytown pg 3
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809 of Maytown, led by president Sara Gutshall, is currently selling personalized, engraved bricks that will be put into the new walkways set to be installed in the Maytown Square in mid-April. The sale of bricks will help to pay for the project.

Marriage ministry coaches Jeff and Missy Sugden will direct a time of biblical marriage teaching and Christ-centered resources. Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, will host a roundtable discussion on “Confronting the Holocaust” on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 6 p.m. In January, Dave Dunsavage presented “Confronting the Holocaust: A Teacher’s Experience Visiting Holocaust Sites in Poland.” He shared what it was like to visit several of the locations where the atrocities of the Holocaust occurred. He also talked about the origins of antisemitism, pre-Holocaust Jewish life in Europe, the rise of the Nazis to power in Germany, the use of ghettos and concentration camps to separate Jews from the rest of the German population, the horrors of the Final Solution, the end of the Holocaust with the liberation of the death camps, and the aftermath on the Jewish people and the world.

The Lancaster County 4-H program will hold the 34th annual Lancaster County 4-H Benefit Auction on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 9 a.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Specialty items to be sold include a handcrafted tack box, a Quaker-style chicken coop, and certificates to the Fulton Theatre, Morr Range, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm, Rhoadstar Tire Center, and other businesses. The volunteer auctioneers will be Charles Hess and representatives of All American Auction Company. This year, the event will again offer a silent auction during the
live auction. Silent auction items will include pizza gift certificates, certificates for car washes, and fast food restaurant coupons. Additional items to be up for bids include animal feed and supplies, household items, craft items, baked goods, tools, produce, and cookbooks. This summer, students entering grades nine through 12 are invited to take part in a new camp being offered by the Department of Business at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown. “Entrepreneurship With a Purpose” is set to take place on campus from Sunday to Friday, July 19 to 24. “This is a project we’ve been thinking of for several years,” explained Cristina E. giving small loans to female entrepreneurs in Bangladesh, and with those small loans they could build a business for themselves,” Ciocirlan explained. “The main difference between a social enterprise and a charity is that a charity gives away things without offering any compensation, but social enterprises actually charge a price for the good,” Ciocirlan described. “It’s the idea that (people) could use entrepreneurship to make the community or the environment better.” At camp, students will take a field trip to a local social enterprise to see the concept in action and ask questions. Another visit will be made to a local business accelerator and incubator to show campers first-hand about another avenue available for launching and growing a business. Ciocirlan noted that accelerators work with existing businesses to take their businesses to the next level, while incubators help entrepreneurs as they move from idea to launch. It does paint a really great picture of Martin Luther King that is not whitewashed.” As for the character of Camae, Mackey describes her as “unapologetically black.” “I love that. I relate to that 100%,” she shared. “I definitely identify with the pride and the dignity that she takes in being a black woman, especially in a time that black women were treated

It was really great to listen to the thoughts and ideas.” Attending the event spurred Rivera to have a few ideas of her own, which she shared with Morales. “(Rivera) said, ‘This is awesome, but where are the young people?’” recalled Morales. Not only did Rivera have suggestions for attracting millennials, she also thought MCC could aid the event in a variety of ways. “MCC has been instrumental in developing workshops,” said Morales, who said a larger number of young people are attending the event and that there is more diversity among the more than 400 who attend and the presenters. “(Rivera) said (things) I had been thinking, and she had connections that were instrumental,” said Morales, who added that Eastern Mennonite Missions and Landis Communities are among the local organizations that support Stewardship University’s mission. Among this year’s workshop titles are “Missions in Your Own Backyard,” “Combatting Human Trafficking,” “55 and Counting,” “Elevate Your Nutrition,” “Kingdom Entrepreneurship,” “Make Medicare an Easy Step,” and “Overcoming Burnout and Disappointment.” Morales pointed out that experts in specific fields will teach the workshops. “We have one called ‘ModernDay Lepers,’” she said, noting that the workshop will focus on integrating sex offenders who have come out of incarceration into a church community. Another workshop that Morales elaborated on will work to teach churches and families the best ways to respond to children with autism, ADHD, and developmental differences. She pointed out that one workshop will focus on the serious problem of depression and suicide among teenagers. Baughman Nets 28 in Loss to N. Lebanon by Vaughn Brown
Looking to end their season on a positive note, the Donegal girls’ basketball team hosted Northern Lebanon last Tuesday but were not able to come through with a win as the Vikings handed the Indians a 6046 loss. With the defeat, the lady Indians finished the season with a league record of 4-9 and 8-14 overall. Despite a promising first quarter of play for Donegal in which the score was tied at 11, Northern Lebanon’s Zara Zerman’s 40 points on the night proved too much for the Indians to handle, overshadowing Kiera Baughman’s team high 28. “During the second period, our defensive rotations were not happening quick enough and we allowed Zerman to score all 12 of their second period points while we were only able to bucket four from the floor and two from the line,” stated head coach Thomas Baughman. “I was happy with our third period. The girls showed their grittiness and were able to counter everything Northern Lebanon brought at us. We just could not close off the lane quick enough to keep Zara from getting to the rim and that made the difference tonight.” Trailing 23-17 heading into the third, Donegal did its best to keep pace with the Vikings and stay in a position to make a run in the fourth, but Northern Lebanon closed the door, outscoring the Indians 20-14 over that span and ensuring the victory. It was also senior night for Donegal and marked the end of a historical run for Baughman who finished with
1,777 career points to become the alltime leading scorer at Donegal. She and Lydia DeBruin were the lone seniors on the team and earned praise, along with the rest of the team, from their coach. “I am very proud of this team’s efforts and our senior leadership on and off the court this season. Lydia really came out and worked extremely hard, pushed herself and her teammates to be better all season,” said Baughman. “Kiera kept working to push the pace of our team…and becomes the Donegal girls’ basketball leading scorer. They both earned the respect of their teammates and the younger hoopsters in Donegal. They should feel proud of what they are leaving behind for the program.” BOYS’ BASKETBALL Facing the possibility of ending their season with no league wins, the Indians traveled to Northern Lebanon on Thursday and made sure that did not happen. Trailing by seven points at the break and led by Levi Sites who scored 12 on the night and Ryan Zuch who had 11, Donegal surged in the second half to pull off a slim, 44-43 win. The two teams ended the first quarter tied at 14 before the Vikings went on a 16-9 run in the second to pull ahead, but an inspired Donegal squad outscored the home team 2113 over the course of the next two and made sure that the season ended with that elusive win. “I am really proud of the team and the way they kept working all season,” commented head coach Kevin Dolan. “It says a lot that they were

still competing in last game of year and I am happy for them to be able to enjoy a win in the last game.” WRESTLING In its final match of the regular season, the Donegal wrestling team traveled to Solanco on Thursday night where both sides fought back from being down before the Golden Mules took charge and ended the night with a 37-30 victory. Solanco won seven of the 13 contested bouts and stormed back from an 11-point deficit with three straight pins to close out the night. Beginning at 126 pounds, the Mules opened the match by winning
the first four bouts and took a 19-0 lead before Donegal fired back. Decisions by Joe Fox at 152 and Joel Grillo at 170 combined with pins by Mason Ober (160), Will Small (182), Garrett Blake (195), and Connor Ruhl (220) put the Indians ahead 30-19 with only three bouts remaining following a no contest at 285. With momentum turned back in their favor, the Indians looked to put another W in the column, but Dominic Flatt (106), Weston Bare (113), and Jarod Fulton (120) made sure that did not happen as the hosts put any thoughts of a Donegal comeback to rest.

SWIMMING Friday and Saturday marked the 2020 L-L League Championship meet which was held in the Roy Snyder Natatorium at Wilson High School in West Lawn and for the seven Donegal swimmers that participated, it was a good weekend. While Donegal is considered a non-swim school, individuals can still participate in the meet as well as earn qualifying times to enter the District Three and PIAA championships as well. The Indians, featuring both boys and girls, combined to bring home a total of 12 medals including five first
place finishers and a handful of record times, all of which were set by Jake Houck. With the non-swim designation, however, Donegal was not a part of the overall team competition. Houck, who returned this year as reigning league champ in the 100 butterfly, successfully defended his title with a dominating performance in Friday night’s event that set new league, meet, and pool records. His finish in 49.95 was over three seconds faster than the next competitor and .27 faster than his mark from last year which broke the previously held record.

The selected students were to be honored by members of the Mount Joy Rotary during their monthly luncheon meeting. Emily is the daughter of John and Heather Ashley of Mount Joy. She is a four-year member of the tennis team and serves as captain, and she is also a threeyear member of the Varsity Club. She is a two-year member of National Art Honor Society and serves as president of both the Math Honor Society, in which she is a three-year member, and National Honor Society (NHS), where she has been a member for two years. She has been a Link Crew leader as a junior and a senior, a member of the Booster Club throughout high school, and class secretary throughout high school. Outside of school, Corey attends Congregational Bible Church’s youth group and went on mission trips to Jamaica, where the group served at a camp for adults with disabilities. He also volunteers with the Lancaster Food Drive and as a tutor at Donegal High School. Corey plans to go to college with an ROTC scholarship and then attend law school.

Looking to wrap up his second gold medal of the weekend, Houck returned Saturday for the 100 freestyle and not only claimed the top finishing time of 45.42, but set another trio of records as well. This time, Houck took out a 17-year standing League record as well as another pool record that had been on the books for the past nine. Joining Houck as the second Donegal boy to earn gold was Ethan Shonk who won the 100 backstroke on Saturday by 1.62 over Warwick’s Joe Moll with a time of 52.98, his second medal of the weekend. In Friday’s 200 freestyle he finished third in 1:46.50, just barely missing out on second to Theo Lance of Warwick who touched in 1:46.43. Claire O’Neill actually spearheaded Donegal’s gold rush Friday night when the junior out swam the field in the 200 IM to claim the Indian’s first win. Finishing nearly four seconds ahead of Conestoga Valley’s Karli Raasch, O’Neill’s time of 2:07.34 earned her a spot on top of the podium for the first of two medals of the meet. In Saturday’s competition she and Raasch battled it out again, this time in the 100 backstroke where the two only had .09 separating them as O’Neill finished just behind her in third place with a time of 58.82. Jordynn Park’s weekend also went amazingly well as she too, repeated as champion, winning the 100 breaststroke on Saturday after opening the meet with a second place finish in Friday’s 100 butterfly. The junior swimmer found herself in a battle with Hempfield’s Ella Root Saturday night but was able to find that extra championship gear as she defended her title, finishing in 1:05.21 while

PPL Foundation Seeks Grant Nominations
Several local students were named to the dean’s list for the fall 2019 semester at Clarion University of Pennsylvania. To earn placement on the dean’s list, Clarion students must be enrolled in at least 12 credits and earn a 3.5 grade point average. Students honored are Jenae Cooper, Downingtown; Abigail Sullivan, Hummelstown; Hannah Norton, Morgantown; Alice Fernald, Mount Joy; Hannah Butch, Palmyra; and Alexis Boie, Lindsey Chatterton, Lexis Green, Hannah Hoover and Devon Lonergan, York.
This year, PPL is marking its centennial by honoring people who work to transform lives in their communities. The PPL Foundation will give a total of $100,000 in grants to help illuminate the contributions of individuals working in the nonprofit sector. Ten Bright Lights grants of $10,000 will be awarded in honorees’ names to the nonprofit agencies they support. The foundation is accepting Bright Lights nominations from through Thursday, April 30. Submissions will be reviewed based on
a variety of criteria, including impact, innovation, inspiration, and dedication, and they will be featured on the Bright Lights program website. Award honorees will be announced in September 2020. Nominees must be residents of the 29 counties in Pennsylvania served by PPL Electric Utilities and must be employed by nonprofit agencies aligned with PPL Foundation’s mission. The Fine and Performing Arts Department at Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS), 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, will present “Beethoven Extravaganza - Celebrating the 250th Year of Beethoven” as part of its George R. Schreck ‘47 and Barbara A. Schober ‘72 Memorial 2019-20 Concert and Lecture Series. The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, and on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 5 p.m. The concerts will feature the
LCHS artists-in-residence, Dr. Michael T. Jamanis on violin and Frances Veri on piano. Special guests Thor Sigurdson, cello, and Doris Hall-Gulati, clarinet, will also perform.
