Marietta Will Hold Our Forest Volunteer Days

If you’ve enjoyed the beautiful trees along the Northwest River Trail in Marietta, you can now take an active role in helping to maintain that beauty. The Marietta Shade Tree Committee is looking for volunteers to help with its new initiative, Our Forest Volunteer Days. Volunteers will be asked to cut English ivy and other invasive vines away from the base of trees along the trail.

From Trash To Treasure

Expertssay you should replace your mascara every few months. Thanks to students at Donegal High School, your trash can become a wild animal’s treasure.

The Donegal Key Club is collecting mascara wands to donate to Wands for Wildlife, a program that began through Appalachian Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina.

“We collect clean mascara wands, or if you want to donate them as is, you can put them in a plastic bag, and we’ll clean them,” explained senior Madison Arroyo. “They are used to take care of wildlife, to remove oil and debris.”

The club members have placed

donation boxes for the wands throughout the school and in the bathrooms as well as in the office.

Susan Heydt, Key Club adviser, noted that the group has been organizing the drive for about 10 years. “We used to have a partnership with a local salon, and we got a lot of donations from them, but the business closed, so now we’re hoping to connect with another business to partner with,” she said.

Along with the wand collection, Key Club members are also seeking donations for their Rent-the-Runway

closet. “We collect clothing from students and members of the community, and we have it dry cleaned and then we store it in a closet here at school,” remarked senior Alessia Archer. “We sort donations by size and type.”

As senior Emily Fasig explained, donations can include anything from dressy clothes students could wear for an in-class presentation or job interview to formal wear for prom or other school dances. “We even have some ties and sports coats,” she said.

The group opens the closet for a

few weeks before school dances, and students can rent an outfit for a minimal donation which covers the cost of the dry cleaning. Heydt noted that any donations that the group feels would not suit highschool students are offered to the school’s performing arts department or donated elsewhere.

In addition to the Key Club donation drives, students in the National Art Honor Society (NAHS) at Donegal are collecting markers to recycle for the Crayola ColorCycle program. “We are collecting any brand or type of plastic barrel markers,” stated senior Sydney Snyder. “You can drop them off at any school office in the district or in collection bins at the high school.”

“We’re holding one volunteer day per month, on the last Saturday of the month through April, focused on cutting as best as we can and removing as much of the invasive and aggressive vines that have climbed their way to the top of the trees,” said Brandon Tennis, who is leading the project. Removing the vines will not only decrease the overall weight in the tree canopy, he stated, but will also decrease competition for resources such as sunlight that the trees face from

Holding the donation drives throughout the school helps the Key Club and NAHS members fulfill their groups’ purpose. “It’s all part of our mission to focus on sustainability and not to throw everything away but to find ways to reuse items,” Emily commented. “It’s a way to keep products out of landfills.”

Madison agreed, adding, “These are easy habits for high school students to get into. It’s an easy way to make a choice to be sustainable.”

Affiliated with the Kiwanis

Club of Norlanco-Rheems, the Key Club is a service-oriented group. The members hold a clothing drive and a toy drive annually, and they help with community events at the Milanof-Schock Library. They are also beautifying and maintaining a courtyard on the high school campus, removing weeds and working with a Master Gardener to plant items native to Pennsylvania.

Sweetheart Meal Will Support Mt. Hope

After Don Good passed away in December, his four children described their father as having lived a life of “calling, connection, commitment and caring.” Good, a farmer and pastor, spent his last days living at Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim, where the staff gave back to the man who had been instrumental in volunteering with the facility’s capital campaign to raise money for renovations. “Mt. Hope cared for Don, opening a space for his family to tenderly sit by his bedside, holding his hand, sharing memories, loving him and releasing him to heaven,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement for Mt. Hope.

Stories like Don’s are not unique at Mt. Hope, where residents are treated with love and care regardless of their changing circumstances and life situations. You can support the mission of Mt. Hope by participating in the Sweetheart To-Go Banquet, with

proceeds to benefit the Mt. Hope community. The meal will be offered for curbside pickup on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot of LCBCManheim Campus, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim. Each meal will include barbecue fire-grilled chicken, gourmet cheese potatoes, sweet and sour saucy green beans with bacon, applesauce, a dinner roll with butter and a dessert.

Mt. Hope is a 50-bed nonprofit skilled nursing facility and rehabilitation center with a mission of caring for residents regardless of their ability to pay. “It’s a sweet place in our community that ensures our residents have a place to call home when situations arise where care is needed,” Wilson said. “Many of our residents lack the financial resources to cover the cost of their care, and the gap is growing in what residents can afford to pay versus what state assistance, Medicaid, reimburses for the daily rate of care.” Donations

and tickets to dinners such as the Sweetheart To-Go Banquet help to fill that gap, she stated, adding, “It’s the heartfelt gifts that keep Mt. Hope going and able to provide a wonderful place for people.”

Preorders will be taken for meals and saved under the name provided when ordered. To preorder or for more information, call Wilson at 717682-8026 or email advance-

ment@mthopenazarene.org by Monday, Feb. 20. Extra meals will be available on-site while supplies last. No handling of money will occur on the day of food pickup. When picking up meals, customers may leave payment in a dropbox in the form of exact change or checks made payable to “Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community.” The cost of the meal is $17.

Operation HOPE Recognizes Fulton Bank

Operation HOPE recently recognized Fulton Bank, a subsidiary of Fulton Financial Corporation, for providing nearly $1 billion in loans to low- and moderateincome homebuyers over the past seven years.

The announcement was made by John Hope Bryant, founder, chairman and CEO of Operation HOPE, during Operation HOPE’s ninth annual HOPE Global Forums in Atlanta in December 2022. The event included nearly 5,000 delegates and attained more than 1 million views online.

The HOPE Global Forum is dedicated to expanding financial inclusion for everyone.

In 2016, Fulton Bank began collaborating with Operation HOPE, a nonprofit focused on financial literacy and economic inclusion. Fulton Bank participates in the Closing Cost Assistance Program, which provides grants to buyers to help with the up-front costs of purchasing a home. Ful-

ton also sponsors Operation HOPE financial wellness coaches in six cities throughout its footprint. The coaches provide free education to consumers, focusing on improving their credit and preparing them for the financial aspects of home ownership.

Fulton Bank has helped facilitate more than $968 million in loans to more than 5,700 homebuyers under the Closing Cost Assistance Program, and that cumulative total is on track to hit $1 billion in loans in 2023. In addition to homebuyer loans, the bank has donated more than $8 million in grants to make purchasing a home more affordable for low and moderate-income buyers.

For more information about Operation HOPE, visit www.Operation HOPE.org or follow the organization on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Making fastnachts at Holy Trinity Catholic Church is an exact science. Sort of. There are specific steps required in making the treats, but because each one is handmade, no two are alike, said

Betty Mahan, a member of the fastnacht committee at the church.

“There is a correct way to roll the dough,” Mahan explained. “It’s not like rolling dough at home. You don’t flour the dough. You only flour the board and the pin.

You don’t turn the dough over. You relax the dough by lifting if off the board.” The dough rises twice - once overnight before it’s rolled out and once after rolling - before the treats are fried. She noted that the resulting fastnacht is unique, adding, “I’ve never had any that taste like ours.”

Holy Trinity’s annual fastnacht sale will begin on Monday, Feb. 20. Sales will continue Tuesday, Feb. 21, and Wednesday, Feb. 22, followed by Mondays and Wednesdays through March 15.

The fastnacht sale started as a project to raise funds to build a new church. While the current bake will produce more than 5,000 dozen fastnachts, the sale began as a small endeavor, noted volunteer Kathleen Lutz.

“It started out with only one or two days of sales,” said Lutz, who has been volunteering with the bake since the 1970s. While the original

recipe is the same, she noted that some things have been tweaked. “We’ve found easier ways to do things over the years,” she said. “Everybody has good ideas. Some work and some don’t.”

The sale is still a fundraiser for the church, with proceeds used for parish projects and to support Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School. Members of St. Peter Catholic Church in Columbia also assist with the sale, said St. Peter member George Overmeyer. “This is a ‘fun’ raiser more than a fundraiser,” he added. “We all have a lot of fun.”

Volunteers are needed to help with the bakes, with shifts available starting at 4 a.m. for people who want to help roll the dough. Experience is not required, said volunteer Karen Sahd. “There’s always somebody around who knows the correct way to do things,” she commented.

Mahan noted that working

Committee members invite people to order fastnachts from Holy Trinity Catholic Church’s annual sale.

at 4 a.m. is not required. “People can give an hour of time or help when they can,” she said. “We need second shift people and cleanup people, too.”

Fastnachts are available by the dozen, either glazed or plain. The committee members estimate that 75% of orders are for glazed treats.

“You don’t even need to look in the bag to know if they are glazed or not,” volunteer Jim Knapp said. “It’s evident by the weight of the bag because

we use so much glaze.” Orders will be taken for fastnachts online only until sold out. To place an order, visit www.holytrinitycolumbiapa.com. Doors will open at 10 a.m. each day for pickup at the side entrance of the school, 404 Cherry St., Columbia. Orders not picked up by 1 p.m. will be resold on a first-come, first-served basis. To volunteer with the fastnacht bake, call the parish office at 717-684-2711.

Women’s Group To Start Devotional Series

The Ladies’ Lunch Bunch of Reformation Lutheran Church will start a new devotional series on Tuesday, Feb. 14,

called “The Foremothers of Jesus.”

The Ladies’ Lunch Bunch was formed in 2018 and

meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 10 to 11:10 a.m. at the church, 2100 Manor Ridge Drive, Lan-

caster. Afterward, attendees are welcome to meet at a restaurant at 11:30 a.m. In February, the group will eat at Mission BBQ, 2002 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster.

Beginning with Eve from the Book of Genesis and ending in December with Mary, the mother of Jesus, the group will study 11 of the women in the biblical ancestry of Jesus. The study will be facilitated by the Rev. Arica Demme, who has been assisting pastor Mark Chavez at Reformation since January 2022. Each month’s installment of the study can stand on its own, so attendees can join at any time during the year. There is no cost for the study.

For more information, contact 717-947-4248. Information about the church is available at www.reformation -nalc.org.

Madelyn Heidlauf and Ryan Zuch, both from Mount Joy, were named to the dean’s list at Misericordia University, Dallas, Pa., for the fall 2022 semester.

To qualify for the dean’s list, a student must earn grade point average of 3.55 or greater.

the presence of the vines. “Right now, the vines are thriving while the trees are compensating,” Tennis remarked. “We want to flip that.” Volunteers will cut the vines at the base, so the vines at the top of the trees will die off, he noted. Sessions will be held on Saturdays, Feb. 25, March 25 and April 29, from 10 a.m. to noon. Volunteers should meet on the trail at the south end of Chestnut Street in Marietta.

The project is an initiative Tennis brought to the Shade Tree Committee. “We’re really fortunate that our borough has its own forest,” noted Tennis, who is a natural lands planning and management expert. “Everybody loves the trail, the Marietta section in particular, and it’s our responsibility to maintain the health of the forest that surrounds the trail. The health of the forest equates to the beauty of it.”

Tennis came up with the idea for the volunteer project after noticing the overgrowth of invasive plants while exploring the trail with his family. “We are on the trail every day,” he said. “Through my work, I can never simply enjoy a trail. I always have an eye on the issues. I had been concerned about the health of the borough’s floodplain forest, and species removal is almost always the first step in habitat restoration.”

He noted that no experience is necessary to help with the vine removal, adding that he plans to bring his own children, who are 4 and 7 years old, to help. “Anybody can do this,” he remarked. “We are asking people who are able to bring their own tools, including hand pruners, loppers or a pruning saw. I’ll be there to give instructions, but it’s pretty

basic volunteer work. You need as many hands as possible to help with this.”

For more information on volunteering, contact Lillian Hill at 717-309-3309.

Brotzman Claims HWT Title in League Meet

Coming through the highly competitive weekend of wrestling the top rivals in the league, the Donegal grapplers placed five athletes among medal recipients out of the 10 who wrestled at the LancasterLebanon League Championships on Friday and Saturday, January 27-28 at Manheim Township High School.

Among those who made it on to the podium was senior Nicholai Brotzman. He captured the 285-pound weight class with a close 3-2 victory over Hempfield’s Caleb Mussmon.

“It was a big match for him,” Indians coach Nick Evans noted. “We knew going in for him it was important to get a takedown.

“He got up 1-0 and after 30 or 40 seconds into the second period he got a takedown to make it 3-0,” Evans continued. “Nicholai stuck to the game plan and wrestled hard.”

There was a bit of history between Brotzman and Mussmon as the twain had met a year earlier in the L-L’s with Mussmon notching a 1-0 vic-

tory. Yes, another one-point decision.

“Nicholai has been picking up wins,” said Evans. “So, his ranking is going up in the state.”

Others who finished strong in the two-day tournament included Noah Hinkel, who took third in the 121-pound class, and Ruben Mumper (4th place, 152)

Caidyn Leaf claimed seventh at 160 while Sergio Garcia finished eighth at 172.

“In the second round at 121, Noah Hinkle lost to the eventual champ Marco Tocci of Warwick,” Evans pointed out.

“Tocci is ranked in the state.

“Even though he lost, it was a breakthrough match,” continued the coach. “I told him if he wrestled that way through the rest of the tournament, that he would finish high.”

Hinkle had won a 9-1 major decision over Julian Zaragoza of Northern Lebanon prior to Tocci taking their quarterfinal round match. He earned another major decision followed by a 5-0 decision over Hempfield’s Sutton Schopf in the consolation matches. Kamdyn Williams of Township for-

feited in the consolation semis, giving Hinkel a chance to wrestle for third place - a 53 defeat of Cocalico’s Keith Messner.

“He battled back, putting together some good matches,” Evans said.

After pinning Josh Zook of Penn Manor and earning a 4-2 victory over Cocalico’s Landon Eberly, Mumper’s track to the championship was switched to the consis thanks to another champ.

“He lost to a four-time champ - Griff Gonzalez from Lebanon,” Evans said.

Mumper promptly poured it on in the consolation semis with a 9-4 defeat of Zook. He came up short against another formidable foe, losing to Elizabethtown’s Aiden Robinson in the third-place match.

Leaf won the seventh-place match over Township sophomore Leighton Underwood. Leaf’s Friday matches included a 6-1 defeat of Cocalico’s James Brady

In the 172 wrestlebacks, Garcia notched a first-period pin followed by a tough 3-2 victory over Braeden Wood of Octorara.

“I was impressed with the two sophomores - Caidyn Leaf and Sergio Garcia,” Evans said. “They were not seeded in the top eight. This will give them something to build on.”

Though the Indians didn’t make the top-16 in the rankings for District Three qualification as a team, Evans said, “I’m excited to see where we finish in the post-season.”

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Since New Year’s Day, the Donegal Indians have won six out of eight L-L League

games, raising their league mark to 6-4.

As a matter of fact, three of the Indians’ four defeats have been by five or fewer points.

Friday, January 27, happened to be one of those close losses.

“Octorara scored 18 of the last 20 points of the game,” Ryan Shipper, the Donegal head coach, pointed out. “We were not able to hold them off in the fourth quarter.”

Octorara outscored Donegal 18-10 in the fourth quarter, winning by a 65-60 margin at Donegal.

There were 11 lead changes in the game according to Shipper.

“Both teams made runs throughout the game,” he said. “It came down to a few possessions where we turned the ball over, leading to Octorara baskets.”

The Indians, who fell to 118 overall, had a balanced scoring attack. Four players reached double figures in scoring. Evyan Patel led the team with 20 points as he perfectly sized up five threepoint shots. He also went 3for-3 from the free throw line.

Dutch Good scored 10 points, including a threepointer. Speaking of treys, Sawyer Floyd’s 10 points included nine from threepoint range. James Turbedsky also tallied 10 points.

Octorara’s Zachary Kirk led all scorers with 31 points. Teammate Elijah Hamilton scored 22.

The Indians earned that sixth L-L League win on Monday, January 30, topping Northern Lebanon 65-48 on the road.

Grabbing the momentum in the second quarter, Donegal outscored Northern Lebanon 14-2, building a commanding 33-13 halftime lead.

Floyd, who finished with 14, Patel, who made three treys and scored 11 overall, and Nathan McKnight (10 pts) reached double digits. Good scored nine.

GIRLS’ BASKETTBALL

In an impressive performance at home, Donegal

could not hold off Northern Lebanon in the fourth quarter of a girls’ L-L League basketball game on Tuesday, January 31. The Vikings outscored the Indians 12-4 in the fourth quarter to post a 49-41 win.

Donegal fell to 3-17 (0-8 league) while the Vikings improved to 12-7 (4-4 league).

Mia Wissler connected on three treys and finished with a team-high 11 for Donegal.

Teammate Kara Heidlauf scored 10.

Olivia Shutter paced Northern Lebanon with a game-high 17.

All phases of development are important. But it seems that the stage between the third and eighth grades may be especially critical in the growth of young women.

That’s where Girls on the Run (GOTR) steps in and helps girls put their collective best foot forward. GOTR’s mission is to help adolescent females become more social, more confident and more emotionally aware.

“We address the whole girl,” said Jennifer West, program director for GOTR of Lancaster. “Girls are facing so many critical decisions at this stage. We help girls with friendships, resolving conflicts, reaching goals, overcoming obstacles and asking for advice.”

“We hear girls say, ‘I’m not good enough. I’m not tall enough. I’m not smart

enough,’” continued West. “We tell them, ‘No, you want to be yourself.’ We help girls find their star power. We help girls make good choices.”

West emphasized that GOTR is more than simply a running program, but an after-school, community program. “You can hop, jump and skip, as long as you’re moving forward,” she said.

GOTR of Lancaster conducts two 90-minute meetings each week for 10 weeks, during both the spring and fall seasons. Registration for the spring 2023 season will begin Wednesday, Feb. 15. Meetings are conducted by volunteer coaches in every school district in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, as well as at churches and social organizations like the YMCA. Last spring, GOTR served 960 local residents, and in the fall, the program’s partic-

ipants numbered around 560. This spring, GOTR of Lancaster is shooting for 1,100 participants, 80 teams and 450 volunteer coaches.

“We’re really dependent on finding people with love for Girls on the Run,” said West.

GOTR’s program separates its girls into two groups by age. The course focuses on participants learning about themselves first, then learning about cooperation and finally learning about their communities.

This year’s spring GOTR program will be capped on Saturday, May 20, at Franklin & Marshall College with its annual 5K run, which is expected to draw 3,000 participants, running buddies, coaches and spectators.

“We started out with 25 girls and two teams,” said West. “It’s 14 years later, and

we feel like Girls on the Run has become a household name.”

Lancaster is one of 200 councils of the international GOTR program. In 2017, GOTR of Lancaster incorporated Lebanon County as part of its reach.

Since its inception, GOTR of Lancaster has served nearly 19,000 participants.

“Now we have girls who have graduated from college coming back and they’re like a bridge to the older people,” said West. “We’re a lot more sure of ourselves. We know it’s successful. We know it’s impactful. We know it’s making a difference in people’s lives.”

To register for GOTR’s spring session, visit www.gotrlancaster.org, email jwest@gotrlancaster.org or call 717-869-5655. There is a fee to register, based on income.

hood hunger throughout local public school communities. Together with its customers, Giant has raised more than $4.8 million to date to help ensure no child goes hungry at school or at home.

Through the Feeding School Kids initiative, school districts have been able to support meal programs and address food insecurity through activities ranging from supplying backpacks with weekend food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building on-campus food pantries. School districts in Pennsylvania have benefited from the program.

Polar Bear 5K Returns In Person

Approximately 200 runners and hikers, some with their dogs, participated in the Lancaster Group of the Sierra Club’s 13th annual Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike, Bring the Dog, held in Lancaster County Central Park on Jan. 15. It was the Group’s first in-person race in two years due to the pandemic.

Eric Resch, Lititz; Paul Davey, Lancaster; and Thomas Begin, Lancaster, finished first, second and third in the race with times of 20 minutes, 10 seconds; 20:17; and 21:10, respectively. The top three finishers among women were Angela Coco of York, 21:46; Ashlee Whitmoyer of Reading, 22:18; and Rachel Bitner of Lancaster, 24:20. The first three dogs to cross the finish line with their owners were Abby with Angela Coco; Kipper with Ashlee Whitmoyer; and Sim with Frank and Audra Lyons of Kunkletown.

Two hundred five runners and hikers and 46 dogs were registered for the race. Approximately 70 volunteers were on hand to handle race-day activities, as well as many spectators who cheered on the participants.

Money raised by the Polar Bear 5K supports the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group’s local efforts to ease climate change, the reason polar bears and other creatures are at risk of extinction. The

funds help finance the local organization’s “green project” grant program, which has awarded grants of up to $500 to 71 Lancaster Coun-

ty organizations over the past seven years, as well as its free-to-the-public yearround outdoor activities and educational programs.
