Cindi Selph set out to learn how to crochet after having a conversation with a friend about people who crochet plastic bags into sleeping mats. “I went online and got inspired by all of the YouTube videos,” recalled Selph. With sewing and knitting skills already under her belt, Selph was able to quickly teach herself how to crochet the plastic bag yarn more commonly referred to simply as “plarn.” Selph reached out to Mount Joy Helping Services to see if there might be a need for the 4-by-6-foot plarn sleeping mats locally, and she learned about the growing number of people in the immediate area experiencing homelessness. She invited people from her church, St. Mark’s United Methodist Church (UMC) in Mount Joy, to join her in creating the mats to then be

Green Eggs And Hamming It Up By Chelsea Peifer
Who wants birthday cake when you could celebrate with green eggs and ham instead? That line of thought might not carry over throughout the rest of the year, but when the birthday of legendary children’s book author Dr. Seuss rolls around on March 2, libraries across the country take it upon themselves to celebrate with green eggs and ham breakfasts in his honor. The Milanof-Schock Library has been hosting an annual green eggs and ham breakfast for more than 25 years, said children’s librarian Jan Betty - best known to local See Green Eggs And Ham pg 3

distributed to people in need. For someone sleeping outside, the mats add a layer of protection - however thin - from the cold, damp ground. Thus far, the St. Mark’s Mats of Love group has completed approximately 50 mats that have been given away and well-received. The technique for making the mats begins with flattening basic plastic bags - the two-handled ones used at grocery and convenience stores - and then measuring and cutting them into pieces that are rolled into balls of plarn. Next comes the process of crocheting the mats, each of which Selph said usually takes two weeks for her to complete, but it can take more or less time depending how much time per day someone has to devote to the project. “I usually spend a couple of hours each evening working on it,” shared Selph.
