Susquehanna Stage Will Hold Open House A Teen Tells A Tale

Susquehanna
Stage has a plethora of volunteer opportunities available to members of the community, and the nonprofit wants you to know about them. The organization will hold a drop-in open house called Coffee, Cookies & Committees on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the gallery space at the theater, 133 W. Market St., Marietta.
As Aiden Thomas, education committee chairperson and board member, explained, Susquehanna Stage used to hold a general membership meeting pre-COVID. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the theater has not offered an opportunity for the general public to learn
more about the organization or volunteer. “We liked the idea of hosting something for people to ask questions and find out more about all of the opportunities we have for people to volunteer and become a part of our organization,” Thomas said. “We have a variety of committees that meet monthly, and we thought that the beginning of a new year and season was a great time to get some new people involved.”
Volunteer opportunities include helping on the marketing committee, which creates graphics, runs social media accounts, designs print advertising and updates the organization’s website. The development committee leads fundraising, seeking out donors, advertisers and

sponsors to fund the theater’s mission. Volunteers with the education committee develop year-round arts education programming for people of all ages, including summer camps, and the events committee manages building rentals, opening night receptions and Susquehanna Stage’s participation in community events throughout the year. Additional committees include the building committee and the capital planning committee.
“In addition to these volunteer opportunities, we have more showspecific opportunities that take less time commitment, including set building/construction, costumes and tech/backstage,” Thomas stated. “We also have one-off volunteer opportunities through our Saturday workdays and front-of-house positions, including ushers, box office and concessions.”
Information on these opportunities will be available at the open house, and Thomas noted that while experience is appreciated, it is not required to get involved in any way.
At the open house, people will have the chance to meet with board members and committee chairs, ask questions and learn more about Susquehanna Stage, Thomas noted. She has been a volunteer with Susquehanna Stage since its inception in 2009 and said it’s a great place to get involved in the community. “Since that time, my parents, siblings and even my grandparents have taken part in some aspect of the organization,” she noted. “I have also had the opportunity to meet and work with so many amazing people of diverse ages and backgrounds, people that I probably never would have met otherwise.”
Refreshments will be available for guests to enjoy during the open house. For more information on Susquehanna Stage, visit www.susquehannastage.com.
Lillian Rule said she has loved reading stories and listening to stories since she was a young child. Now the 15-year-old has written a tale of her own. “A Thousand Stars” was published in December and tells the story of a girl named Hopeful and a boy named Jimmy.

“It’s Christian historical fiction,” Lillian said of the novel. “It’s an allegory and it’s set in the 1800s.” Hopeful is on a journey to the Island of a Thousand Stars, and she
meets Jimmy along the way. He’s trying to escape a difficult past and discover who he really is.
Lillian started working on the book three years ago at the age of 12. “I was scrolling through some old Google Docs, and I found this short story I had written,” she said. She worked on expanding the story, keeping the original title.
During the writing process, she relied on her dad, Justin, for help with the novel’s “big ideas,” she said, and she asked her mom, Whitney, to help with the editing. She also worked with editor and writer Noah Lynch, who provided professional feedback.
Lillian said her novel is geared toward middle and high school readers, and it’s full of spiritual allegory. “I hope people will see the story in the book but also notice the little hidden meanings I put in it,” she said, giving an example of a prodigal son-type storyline that appears in the book.
Her favorite authors include C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Edith Nesbit and Louisa May Alcott, and Lillian said some of the best feedback she has received on the book has referenced her idols.

Northwest EMS Will Hold Food Drive

More than 47,000 people in Lancaster County are food insecure, equating to about one in 11 people, according to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. Among children, that number increases to one in eight. Northwest EMS is helping to address this problem.

Throughout the month of February, the organization will hold its annual food drive to benefit local food banks. Donations will be accepted at the Elizabethtown EMS
station, 380 W. Bainbridge St., and at the Manheim EMS station, 60 W. Colebrook St.

“We’re looking for all kinds of food, particularly staples like pasta, sauce, canned vegetables and canned meats,” said Lori Shenk, community outreach manager for Northwest EMS. She noted that the donation drive can accept some perishables, but arrangements must be made specifically with her for the donations due to lack of storage at the stations. Personal hygiene items
and paper products will also be accepted for the drive.

The drive has been held since 2014, and over the years, it’s been very successful, Shenk stated. In 2021, the stations collected more than 1,800 pounds of food. Last year was a bit of disappointment, she noted, although the drive did yield nine very large boxes of food. “Nearly half of what we collected last year had to be discarded because it was out of date,” Shenk explained. Items will be delivered to the food banks at the beginning of March, so Shenk recommends that donations have a shelf life at least through the spring.

Items will be sorted by type, and the donations will be divided equally among the three food banks in the footprint served by Northwest EMS: the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, the East Donegal/Conoy Christian Food Bank and the Manheim Central Food Pantry.

Holding a food drive is a natural extension of the services provided by Northwest EMS, Shenk remarked. “Our mission is to serve our community,” she said. “We have a unique

view on the needs in our community because we’re in people’s homes. We see the need every day. … Food banks are a great resource for the community. The food drive is an easy thing for us to do to contribute indirectly to the health and well-being of the people we serve.”
The food drive will run through Tuesday, Feb. 28. Items will be delivered sometime during the first week in March. For more information on the food drive, contact Shenk at 717371-8282 or lshenk@nwems86.org.

Lady Indians Battle Section Leaders L-S, and LCHS
BY ARA GRIGORIANLampeter-Strasburg put up 21 points in the second quarter and matched that same output in the third as the Pioneers topped Donegal 62-36 in LancasterLebanon League girls’ basketball action on Monday, January 21. The Pioneers improved to 6-1 in league play while the Indians fell to 3-15 overall (0-7 league).
Katie Ranck led all scorers, putting up 18 points for the Pioneers on the night. Anna Horner (13 pts) and Ava Vaugh (12 pts) had success from three-point range, making seven total treys between them.
Bella Mackison was also successful from three-point range, scoring all nine of her team-leading points for Donegal from beyond the arc. Kara Heidlauf and Remy White each scored eight.

Lancaster Catholic hosted Donegal four days earlier in an L-L League game. The
Crusaders defeated the Indians 74-24 Rylee Kraft bucketed 18 points. Mary Bolesky scored 14 for Catholic.
Mackison and Mia Wissler both popped a pair of treys and finished with seven points each.
B O Y S ’ B A S K E T B A L L The date was December 15. The Donegal boys’ basketball team came into that night’s Section Three game with a 41 record. Lancaster Catholic made a last-second shot to win that game 62-60.
As is generally the case, section rivals do that home and away thing where they each host and visit every section opponent.
So, fast forward to Thursday, January 19 for a contest in Mount Joy, the Indians hosting the Crusaders.
“After losing to Lancaster Catholic on a buzzer beater early in the season, this was a great win for our team and our program, moving into the final weeks of the season,” Ryan Shipper, the Donegal head coach, stated.
The Indians played strong defense and defeated the Crusaders 51-24. The Crusaders didn’t reach double figures in any of the four
quarters.
“We emphasized playing good team defense, which came down to communicating on defense and being there to support and help your teammate,” Shipper said.
Dutch Good had a gamehigh 21 points, making three shots from threepoint land. He also pulled down six rebounds. Evyan Patel connected four times on three-point buckets, finishing with 17 points total.
Sawyer Floyd scored six points to go with his seven rebounds.
Lampeter-Strasburg’s 24point output in the first quarter of Monday’s game at L-S gave Donegal a huge hole to climb out of. The Pioneers posted a 69-52 victory. Donegal fell to 11-7 (53 league).

For the remainder of the game, the Pioneers only outscored the Indians by a 45-43 margin.
Dean Herr, with seven three pointers, led Lampeter in scoring with 21 points. Chase Smucker and Justin Glick each poured in 18 points for the Pioneers.
The leading scorer for Donegal was Floyd, who also
had a hot hand with threepoint attempts, knocking down five en route to 16 points.
Good and Patel, with three triples, each finished with 14 points.

The Donegal wrestlers faced a tough opponent in Manheim Central on Wednesday, January 25. The Barons charged out to a quick start with three consecutive pins followed by the Donegal forfeits at the 107- and the 114-pound weight classes.
Donegal senior Nicholai Brotzman squeezed in a victory amid the Central victories. Brotman pinned Tyler Groff at the 285-pound weight class, cutting the Barons’ lead to 21-6 at that juncture.

Landon Keller also pinned, turning the trick 4:33 into the 139-pound bout. Landen Baughman cruised to a 7-1 decision at 145 and junior Ruben Mumper battled to a 10-4 victory at 152 as the Indians continued to battle to the very end.
This was the Indians’ final match prior to post-season play.
women of all ages and church affiliations to fellowship and grow together in our relationship with Jesus,” said Bonnie Messick, NSAC coordinator.

“Over 35 years of ministry, culture and society have changed, but this group offers women a relaxed and welcoming environment providing a sense of stability and community that is not as common today as when the program began.”

NSAC provides free child care for infants to prekindergarten children, so it’s especially beneficial for young mothers as a way to enjoy some adult interaction, Messick noted. However, the program is open

to women of all ages.
“NSAC is not part of a larger program and is run independently by a committee of women who attend Chiques Church,” she explained. “The women attending (NSAC gatherings) come from many area churches, and (there are) even those with no current church affiliation.”
NSAC meetings begin with informal fellowship time with snacks, coffee and tea, followed by worship music organized and led by committee members, announcements and a brief devotional. “Following devotions, we welcome prayer requests and praises as we share with the group and join in prayer,” Messick said. “After prayer time, the morning’s speaker is introduced and shares on their topic for 45 minutes to an hour.”
Speakers range from professionals in the community to church members providing personal testimonies, and each year, NSAC also invites a local nonprofit organization to speak on its ministry during one of the meetings. “Each season NSAC features a new theme, which guides the speakers in their topic selections,” Messick shared. “This
year the program is based on the theme ‘Created.’ We haven’t been created by chance, but with purpose. God has created us in His image to praise, honor and glorify Him.” While each speaker’s style is different, they all share the core beliefs of the Christian faith and most use Scripture as a basis for their talks, she said.

Above all, NSAC offers women the opportunity to take a break from their busy schedules to enjoy fellowship with other believers while being inspired by the speakers. “Neighbors Sharing and Caring is all about relationships,” said Messick. “It’s a great way to develop relationships with other women of all ages as well as grow in your
relationship with Jesus.”
No sign-up or preregistration is required to attend NSAC. NSAC meets in the fellowship hall at Chiques Church. In the case of inclement weather, NSAC follows Manheim Central School District, and if school is delayed or virtual, NSAC is canceled for the morning. Upcoming NSAC meeting topics include “Is Your ‘Auto Pilot’ Malfunctioning?” with Joanne White on Feb. 7, Katie Leaman speaking about the organization Love INC on Feb. 14 and the choice of a Bible study or freezer meal preparation class on Feb. 28. For more information and a list of speakers and topics, visit www.chiqueschurch .com/nsac.
