The Donegal boys’ basketball team did a good job of rebounding.
The rebounding wasn’t necessarily the act of hauling down a basketball shot attempt that went awry but rather, it also pertained to how the team bounced back from a January 14 loss at Lampeter-Strasburg by posting two straight victories.
Donegal had fallen below .500 following an 89-46 loss at L-S on the 14th. The Pioneers, the first-place team in Section Four, improved to 11-0. They outscored their opponents by over 20 points per game and improved to 6-0 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League with this win.
The Indians, who fell to 2-4 in league play and 5-6 overall, had a huge deficit to overcome, trailing 24-6 after one period.
Pacing the Pioneers in scoring were Ben Wert and Ty Burton, who scored 27 and 25 points, respectively.
The Indians got 10 points form Dutch Good and nine points by senior Khalil Masden.
Donegal rallied in the fourth quarter of Saturday afternoon’s non-league game at Eastern York. In what was anybody’s game heading into the final period, the Indians outscored the Golden Knights 23-15 to post a 55-47 win.
Deandre White was the scoring leader for Donegal, finishing with 15 on the day. Masden poured in 14 points while Good chipped in with eight points. Joe Turbedsky provided more offensive support with a sevenpoint game - all coming from the foul line where he went 7-for-8.
Austin Bausman led the Golden Knights with 11 points.
The Indians didn’t give the Barons a chance to overcome an early 17-5 Donegal advantage in Tuesday’s L-L League clash at home. Holding a 24-16 halftime lead, the Indians outscored the Barons 14-9 in the third quarter, going on to post a 49-30 win, and improving to 8-6 (3-4 league).
Good and Masden hit double figures in scoring with Good pouring in 11 and Masden 10.
Turbedsky had another seven-point game, tying Rohrer for third highest point total on the team.
WRESTLING
The Elizabethtown Bears charged ahead to a 22-6 lead over Donegal in Wednesday’s Section Two wrestling match. The Bears held on for a 35-27 victory as the Indians’ comeback bid - winning five of six weight classes in one stretch fell short. Donegal slipped to 42 on the season in L-L League matches.
Ruben Mumper’s first-period pin at the 145-pound weight class was Donegal’s lone victory in the first six bouts. The Indians fought back with pins by Silams Mumper at 172 pounds and fellow senior Owen Champ (215) sandwiched around an 8-0 decision in favor of E-town’s Hayden Haver at 189.
Champ’s pin and Nicholai Brotzman’s at 285 narrowed the gap to only 26-24. Of the final three weight classes, however, an 11-8 decision for Noah Hinkel (113) would be the only Donegal win. Mark Overlander was on the short end of a close 7-6 decision won by Elizabethtown’s Austin Reitmeyer at 120. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The girls’ basketball team kept pace with South Western in a non-league home game on Saturday, January 15. The Mustangs used a 16-6 run in the third quarter to ride to a 38-33 victory at Donegal. The Indians led 19-16 at the half
Victoria Burton carried the scoring load for the Indians, scoring 18 on the day. Teammate Sophia Floyd finished with eight.
The hard-fought defeat was the middle game of a threegame losing skid by Donegal (214). The previous evening, Lampeter-Strasburg bolted out for a 17-point fourth quarter of an LL League match at Donegal. It was only 38-30 in favor of the Pioneers heading into the final period.
The first half of the contest was a different story as the Indians went into the locker room at halftime trailing by only three points.
Burton again led Donegal in scoring, racking up 13 on the night.
Kiersten Hostetter had a game-high 16 points for L-S, including a perfect 8-for-8 at the charity stripe.
Coming off the close contest against South Western, the Indians played Manheim Central in a league game at Doe Run Elementary School on Tuesday. The Barons’ early dominance led to a 31-13 halftime lead and an eventual 52-33 margin of victory. Donegal fell to 1-5 in league play.
While Maddie Knier of Central led all scorers with 23 points, Burton was a scoring machine on the court herself, finishing with 21 to lead Donegal.
