WhenDave Schell started working at Main Street Mount Joy, he offered the front windows at 55 E. Main St. for local artists to display their work on a rotating basis. Inspired by the art, Schell decided to expand beyond Main Street Mount Joy’s storefront.

The Festival of the Arts will be held on Friday, Jan. 27, from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Jan. 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at locations throughout downtown Mount Joy.

“I decided to have an event in the winter to bring people out and inside businesses, when the business is usually slower because of the weather and time of the year,” said Schell, who is the executive director

of Main Street Mount Joy. “This is our fourth year holding the event. It’s a great way to introduce people to local artists and a great way for the artists to display their work.”

Schell remarked that 13 places will have art from 18 artists on display for the festival. “We have ceramics, oil painters, jewelry, crocheted items, a chalkboard artist, crafters, woodworking, a cartoonist,” he shared. “It is a wide mix of media being displayed. We will have a live art demo from Tina Kreiner.”

People can pick up a map of the art locations at the Main Street Mount Joy office, and a map will be available on the organization’s Facebook page as well. “It is a walking show, so you can walk from one space to another along Main Street

and to Bube’s Brewery,” Schell explained. “Artists will be stationed in each space, and you will have a chance to talk with them, ask questions, look and purchase from the artist.”

Schell noted that the festival has been well received in the past, and he’s looking forward to seeing people out and about in Mount Joy.

“This event will allow people who are interested in learning more about our local art scene to introduce themselves to art,” he said.

“Since the artist will be stationed with their work, it is a wonderful opportunity to ask an artist about their thought process; what tools, supplies or equipment they use; and what inspires them to create their art. This event is also a great way to

discover something new downtown since you’ll be walking in and out of businesses you may not have visited before.”

In addition to individual artists at each location, the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, will hold a Student Art Show during the Festival of the Arts on Jan. 28, and Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance, 78 E. Main St., will hold the Art Heals Art Show both days of the festival.

Parking for the Festival of the Arts will be available along Main Street as well as behind St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in the parking lot off Appletree Alley. For more information on the Festival of the Arts, visit the Main Street Mount Joy Facebook page.

Mount Joy Minnie will make her annual weather prediction on Thursday, Feb. 2, at the Rotary clock, at the intersection of Marietta Avenue and East Main Street in Mount Joy. When the festivities begin at 7 a.m., the groundhog will determine if we’ll have six more weeks of winter or we’ll be treated to an early spring.

“This is just a fun thing to do,” said Kerry Meyers, former director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event. “It’s rather silly, but everybody enjoys doing something silly every once in a while.”

Before Minnie, who is a stuffed animal, emerges from her log, her handlers will read a proclamation. The groundhog’s handlers this year will be Carl Hackman of

Bicycle Club Grant Program Posted

The Lancaster Bicycle Club’s grant program provides funds to support bicycle-related activities and initiatives in Lancaster County. In 2023, the Lancaster Bicycling Club will provide $30,000 in grants.

Grants will be made at the sole discretion of the Lancaster Bicycle Club. Grant funds primarily come from the net profits of the club’s annual Lancaster Covered Bridge Classic ride, which is held each August.

Grants can be requested by

municipalities, schools, and nonprofit organizations for four primary reasons. Grants are available to improve the bicycling experience in Lancaster County, including items like bicycle repair stations, signs, and markings; for repair or maintenance of bicycling features like trails and covered bridges; for bicyclists’ rights and safety advocacy; and to promote bicycling in the county.

Applications are due by Tuesday, Jan. 31. To learn more and apply, visit www.lancasterbikeclub.net.

Strong Second Half Pushes Donegal Past Cocalico

Donegal head coach Ryan Shipper said he knew that his squad’s game against Cocalico would be a tough match as the Indians played host to the Eagles in a LancasterLebanon League boys’ basketball game Friday, January 13.

“Going into our game against Cocalico, we knew were going to have our hands full,” Shipper said. “They play extremely hard and they’re well-coached.”

The two teams went into the locker rooms at halftime with the Indians holding a slim 29-27 lead. Donegal outscored Cocalico 35-26 in

the second half.

“We were able to tighten things up defensively in the second half, which led to good offensive possessions,” Shipper said.

Cole Hess provided consistent offense with 17 points for Donegal.

Sawyer Floyd finished with 12 points, hitting two baskets from three-point range. James Turbedsky made five baskets and finished with 11 points while both Dutch Good and DeAndre White contributed nine points.

“Cole Hess and James Turbedsky did a great job finishing around the basket,” Shipper said. “I was very proud of our team’s effort.”

They continued winning by post-

ing a 40-30 victory at Elco on Tuesday in yet another game that showed second-half defensive dominance. Donegal (10-6 overall, 4-2 league) outscored Elco 27-10 in the second half.

Evyan Patel hit a pair of treys and finished with a team-high 12. Floyd and Turbedsky each added nine with Floyd connecting on two treys also.

“We currently have six guys contributing between six and 11 points per game, which has been a great strength for our team.”

WRESTLING

Not having anyone to wrestle at the 107- and 114-pound weight classes has resulted in Donegal’s wrestling

team forfeiting those two matches at the outset of matches all season long. In many cases, the Indians have bounced back and won a few.

On Wednesday, in an L-L League match with Elizabethtown, the Bears’ 37-25 victory certainly had a resounding mathematical focus on the Donegal forfeits. The Indians also forfeited at 127, causing an 18point swing in a match decided by 12 points.

Noah Hinkel did get three of those points back early on, blanking his opponent in a 2-0 victory at the 121-pound bout. Mark Overlander also came up big at 133, registering a pin in the second period followed by Landon Keller’s 5-1 decision at 139.

Landen Baughman battled Nathan Thomas of E-town in a classic 145-pound battle. Thomas took the tussle by a tough 12-9 final, giving the Bears a 21-12 lead at that juncture.

Ryan Mumper’s 7-1 decision over Ryan Findlay and sophomore Sergio Garcia’s 15-3 major at 172 kept the Indians climbing back in - now down by only 25-19.

Two more E-town pins put the match out

of reach. But Nicholai Brotzman’s first-period pin at the heavyweight battle showed that Donegal does not go down easily.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

The girls’ basketball team played Cocalico, Solanco and Elco in a fiveday stretch. On Friday, January 13, the Indians traveled to Cocalico where the Eagles claimed a 47-28 LL League victory. Solanco won Monday night’s game at home by a 4733 margin.

The Indians fell to 3-13 (0-5 league) as Elco won 56-42 at Donegal on Tuesday, January 17.

In the Elco game, the Raiders outscored the Indians by a mere 26-24 margin in the second half.

Remy White came through with a gamehigh 17 points for the Indians. She nailed a pair of three-point baskets while Bella Macksin (12 pts) scorched two threepointers.

Kenzie Eckhart and Makenna Seifert each scored 13 for the Raiders.

Solanco’s tough defense held Donegal to only eight first-half points. Leading the Indians in scoring in this

match was Mia Wissler with 11 points. Mackison scored 10.

The second quarter of the game at Cocalico loomed largely as the Eagles outscored the Indians 12-3.

White and Wissler had nine points each, both coming through with a three-pointer. Wissler was also a perfect 2-for-2 at the foul line. Mackison was good twice from three-point range, accounting for her six points of the game.

The Eagles’ Teagan Sahm led all scorers with 14.

First Citizens Community Bank, Greg Sallade from State Farm Insurance Agency and guest handler Denny Brandt of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. As Meyers explained, Brandt won the honor as part of an auction during the Chamber’s holiday luncheon.

The Groundhog Day celebration will also include a crazy hat contest. “Anyone who has a crazy hat on will

be called up to stand in front of the crowd, and the winners will be chosen by applause,” Meyers said.

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places, with the winners receiving Mount Joy Money to spend at participating Chamber member businesses in town.

The Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185 will provide hot chocolate and coffee for the event,

and Voyage Mount Joy will supply doughnuts. Meyers noted that the festivities would not be possible without the support of major sponsor Keystone Lawn Company.

Meyers explained that Mount Joy Minnie has a long history of predicting the weather. “It was started by a past Chamber supporter,” she noted. “After he passed away, the Chamber decided to continue to the

tradition.” The event routinely draws upward of 50 people to witness whether Minnie sees her shadow or not.

“If you’ve never come to this before, you should come and check it out,” Meyers said. “It’s just a really fun community event that the Chamber enjoys doing.”

In the case of inclement weather, Minnie will make her prediction underneath the portico at Northwest Bank, 101 E. Main St., Mount Joy.
