Gearing up for Groundhog Day BY CATHY MOLITORIS

People enjoy art from last year’s Donegal Student Art Show.

The art show will feature a variety of mediums.

Art show will spotlight Donegal students community room of the library and will offer visitors an opportunity to see the work up close while also interacting with the artists. “We generally do have students that come out to talk with the community about their artwork,” Funk shared. “There will be an opportunity to fill out comment cards that will be given to the artist. The artists have loved reading these in prior years.” Dutch Country Soft Pretzels will have a food truck at the event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Funk is still working on confirmation from other vendors.

The show fits perfectly with the goals of the Milanof-Schock Library, Funk said. “The mission of Milanof-Schock Library is to be a community resource that enriches lives through education, information, exploration and socialization,” she stated. “The Student Art Show hits so many of those areas. It’s been a joy for us to give the students of Donegal School District the opportunity to display their artwork and engage and connect with members of the community, and we are grateful to partner with Nolt Electric over the past several years as

we’ve grown this event.” Last year, almost 300 people attended the show, she said, adding, “We received such positive feedback that when planning 2024 events, it was one we definitely wanted to continue.” She encourages people who have come to past shows to come back this year and also invites anyone who hasn’t attended a show to check it out. “The talent is amazing,” Funk commented. “I’d encourage anyone interested in supporting the young artists in our community to come out and view their incredible creations.”

We’ve only had a small bit of snow so far this winter, but some of us are ready for spring. Others hope we’ll have six more weeks of winter. Someone knows for sure, and she’s ready to make her prediction. Mount Joy Minnie will declare an early spring or lasting winter on Friday, Feb. 2, at 7 a.m. at the Rotary clock, located at the intersection of Marietta Avenue and East Main Street, Mount Joy. “Mount Joy Minnie will make her prediction with the help of her handlers Greg Sallade, State Farm Insurance, and Denny Brandt, Berkshire Hathaway Homesale Realty, and guest handler Barb O’Neal,” said Ashley Zell, executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce, who organizes the event. T he festivities will also include a crazy hat contest again this year. “Anyone who wears a crazy hat will be asked to stand in front of the crowd, and the winner will be voted on by applause,” Zell explained. “Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places, with the winners receiving Mount Joy Money to spend at participating Chamber member businesses in town.” T h e Wa l te r S .
