the winter doldrums and come see some beauty,” said Kim Beach, operations coordinator for the Milanof-Schock Library, pointing the community to the annual the Student Art Show.

“It’s energizing to see people’s faces as they look at the art and to hear their comments. I like to walk around, and I’ll hear people say, ‘Oh

my goodness. Did you see this one?’”

The Student Art Show will be held on Saturday, Jan. 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. New this year, it will feature art from students at all Donegal School District schools. In the past, the show has featured art from junior high and high school students, Beach said, noting, “This year, we decided to ask the elementary

and intermediate schools if they’d like to participate.”

The show will feature a variety of art mediums. “You’ll see painting, chalk art, ceramic pottery and figures and some photography,” Beach commented. Some art will be displayed in a case in the lobby, with the rest of the show inside the library’s program room. Beach said she hopes to get 65 pieces of art to showcase.

If you’re in need of a warm meal and some free clothes, make plans to visit Trinity Lutheran Church, 47 W. Main St., Mount Joy, on Saturday, Jan. 28, when the 12th annual Clothing Giveaway and Community Meal will be held from 9 a.m. to noon.

“People will line up outside and get a ticket for the meal and then come into the church,” said Savannah

Brosky, care coordinator at the church, noting that the event is first-come, first-served. “They can walk throughout the church to different areas set up by clothing type, and they can take as much as they want.” Clothing will be available in all sizes, from newborn through adult. “In the past, we’ve had coats of all sizes and men’s and women’s suits,” Brosky stated. “We will also have accessories and shoes.”

When he served in World War II, Harry Dyer was a member of “The Hump,” a unit charged with transporting materials from India to China over the Himalayan mountains. He served from 1942 to 1945 as an aerial engineer before returning stateside to raise his family in Elizabethtown.

In a low-scoring non-league girls’ basketball game at Donegal, the Elizabethtown Bears, on the strength of Taryn Hummer’s 16-point scoring and the team’s strong defense early in the second half, claimed a 27-19 victory. The teams went into the locker rooms with the score tied 10-10. E-town’s 6-0 run lifted the visitors to victory.

Taryn Hummer led all scorers, recording 16 points for the Bears.

Remy White topped Donegal with 10 points as she hit a pair of three-point shots. Mia Wissler also hit a three-pointer.

After taking a 20-5 lead through the first quarter, Eastern York topped the Indians 50-23 on Wednesday, January 11 at Eastern York.

Arianne Seitz had a 20point game to lead the Golden Knights. White topped the Indians with nine points, including a three-point bucket. Bella Mackison and Wissler each had five points.

WRESTLING

The Donegal wrestling team was coming off a 3-2 weekend at the Cedar Duals in Lebanon High School, Saturday, January 7. The Indians doubled up Lebanon 54-27, edged Central Bucks East 3330 and downed Conrad Weiser 52-18.

“Ruben Mumper didn’t lose a match at 152 all day,” head coach Nick Evans pointed out. “The Garcia brothers stepped it up. They did well.”

Sergio Garcia posted a technical fall at the 172-pound weight class of the C.B. East match. Scott Garcia pinned

Ayden Stout at 189.

Sergio Garcia had a major decision in the Conrad Weiser match and Scott Garcia won a 5-2 decision at 189.

Nicholai Brotzman had a first-period pin at the 285pound bout of the Weiser match. He also had a pin versus his Lebanon opponent and a 5-2 decision against Joe Collins of CB East.

“Brotzman’s weight class was tough,” Evans said. “He lost 1-0 to the Carlisle kid who was a state qualifierLayton Schmick. But the CB East kid he beat won his match against Schmick.”

In the Weiser match, Landon Keller (139) Mumper (152) Caidyn Leaf (160) and Daniel Viscelli (215) also had pins. Mark Overlander won by a 19-4 technical fall at 133 and Landon Baughman

majored at 145.

Garden Spot was Donegal’s next opponent - a big Section Two battle on Wednesday, January 11. Donegal came out on top 36-24.

The match began at the 172-pound weight class with Sergio Garcia outlasting Jayden Redcay 7-4.

“It was a tossup match, and he was able to start us off with a win,” Evans said.

“Scott Garcia was wrestling their best wrestler hands down and he got pinned,” Evans added, referring to the bout with Blake Weaver in the 189 pound weight class.

A pin by Garden Spot senior Tyler Hurst (215) gave the Spartans a 12-3 lead. But Brotzman came through with a pin at 285.

The Indians have had to forfeit the lower weight class-

es all season In this match, however, the Spartans also didn’t have a wrestler at the 121-pound class, making it 24-9 after that stage.

“From 127 to 160 we won every match,” Evans pointed out.

Noah Hinkel downed Diego Portales in a two-point decision and Mark Overlander came out on the winning side of a 7-2 decision at 133.

“Noah always gives a good effort,” Evans remarked. “He has a workman attitude and he’ll put himself in a position to win.”

Landon Keller won against Josiah Smucker 6-4 in double overtime in the 139-pound class.

With a Garden Spot forfeit at 145 and victories by falls at 152 and 160 - Mumper and Leaf - the Indians had their 36-24 winning margin.

Asked of the 172-pound critical battle with Overlander, a junior, Evans replied, “It also helps that 172 was a nice weight class for us to start at. I knew if we were to start with a win there and even if we were to lose a couple, Brotzman would come in for us at 285.

“All the guys rallied behind each other,” continued the coach. “We have great team chemistry.”

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

The Indians extended their win streak to four games with a double-overtime victory at Elizabethtown on Monday,

January 9. The game was tied 42-42 at the end of regulation and remained even with both sides at 50 points following the first overtime period. Donegal (8-5) outscored the Bears in the second overtime, claiming a 61-56 win.

The Indians outscored the Bears 11-6 in the fourth quarter as well as the second OT session.

The shots from three-point range helped Donegal. Dutch Good scored 22 points, making three baskets of the threepoint variety. Evyan Patel (15 pts) was good on four treys.

James Turbedsky came through with 10 points, making four baskets and going 2for-2 at the free throw line.

Caiden Zeager hit the 20point mark for the Bears. Brenden Lehman added 14.

Eastern York held off Donegal in a non-league game at Mount Joy on Wednesday night, January 11. With a 3216 lead at intermission, the Golden Knights held off the Indians’ comeback bid in the second half. Eastern York came away with a 57-41 win.

A thorn in the side of the Donegal defense was the shooting of Simon Lipsius. He connected on eight threepoint jumpers, finishing with 24 points.

Turbedsky led the Indians with 13 points while Patel put up 10, including two threepoint baskets. Cole Hess scored seven.

people attended, including representatives of the Mount Joy Fire Department, Northwest EMS, American Legion Posts 185 and 466 and the Rheems Fire Department, along with residents at the retirement community.

“I was so surprised by the party,” Harry said. “I didn’t expect this many people. I want to thank everybody for coming.”

The party was organized by Sara Gutshall, a longtime member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809 in Maytown. She got to know Harry during visits she made to local retirement homes over Christmastime. “I had been going for years to bring veterans Christmas bags from the Auxiliary,” Gutshall shared. “I would sit with them and listen to their war stories.” COVID put a pause on the visits, but Harry was still on Gutshall’s mind. She couldn’t mark his 100th birthday because of pandemic restrictions, so she focused on his 102nd this year. “The Lord just laid this on my mind to do this, and I prayed about it and decided to do it,” she said.

The party began with the crowd singing “Happy Birthday” as Harry walked into the community room at the facility. Elizabethtown Mayor Chuck Mummert sang the national anthem, “The U.S. Air Force” and “God Bless America.” Nila Grose crocheted a prayer shawl for Harry and presented it to him, and Gutshall asked veterans in attendance to identify themselves and their branch of service. State Rep. Tom Jones read and presented a citation to Harry from the House of Representatives, followed by a presentation of a blanket, certificate and challenge coin from David Chobanoff of Blankets of Honor, an organization that recognizes veterans for their service.

“We are here to honor a true American hero, a WWII vet,” Chobanoff said. “There’s not too many of them left.”

The Rev. Peter Ogilvie presented Harry with a flag pin and led a prayer, and then the party concluded with Harry opening

gifts before cake and punch were served.

Among the gifts Harry received were more than 150 birthday cards. “My goal was to get to 102 cards, but I actually got more than 150. Harry has to live to 150 now,” Gutshall said with a laugh.

Harry has two children and three grandchildren, and his younger son, Kelvin Dyer, attended the party.

Asked what the secret to his dad’s long life was, Kelvin noted that Harry, who worked as a farmer in his 20s before the war but retired from Black + Decker after 30 years of service, grew

his own vegetables for much of his life. “He ate more vegetables than anyone I knew,” Kelvin shared.

Harry, however, had a differ-

ent view on the secret to his longevity. “This medicine,” he said, lifting a box of chocolatecovered cherries he received as a birthday gift. “That’s the secret.”

Maintaining a healthy weight is believed to promote longterm health, while being overweight or obese can be a risk factor for various conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization

reports that the worldwide obesity rate has tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight. Of these, more than 650 million were obese.

Health issues related to obesity are largely preventable. Los-

ing weight in a healthy manner is essential for safe and lasting results, and individuals aspiring to lose weight may consider the following guidelines on what to do and what not to do.

DO add lean protein sources to your diet. Healthline indicates the body burns calories when digesting and metabolizing protein, so a high-protein diet can help to shed up to 80 to 100 calories per day. Protein also helps you to feel full, reducing the propensity to overeat.

DON’T get hung up on numbers early on. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that even modest weight loss of 5% to 10% of your total body weight can produce health benefits, such as improvements in blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure. Start small and gradually build up.

DO eat at least four servings

of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily. Produce contains an abundance of vital nutrients and is often fiber-rich and low in calories, which helps you to feel full.

DON’T overlook the impact of beverages on weight loss. The calories in sugary beverages, including some all-natural fruit juices, can add up quickly. Stick to water, tea or other unsweetened beverages to help with weight loss.

DO get moving more. The Mayo Clinic notes that while it is possible to lose weight without exercise, getting moving can help burn the excess calories you can’t cut through diet alone.

Exercise boosts metabolism, benefits mood and strengthens muscles and the cardiovascular system, as well.

DON’T go shopping while

hungry. If you do, you may make impulse buys that compromise healthy eating plans.

DO speak with a doctor if you are comparing diet and exercise plans. A health care professional can indicate if a particular diet or fitness routine is acceptable for your age, goals and cur-

rent health status.

DON’T forget to track eating. Most healthy diets involve some sort of calorie-counting, whether they actually require you to document your intake or use a formula to attribute “points” or another measure related to what you eat. Writing

or tracking the foods and beverages you consume will provide the most honest assessment of habits that could affect weight loss.

DO include foods you enjoy. Completely restricting access to occasional treats may cause you to resent healthy eating, which

can derail weight loss goals. The principle of moderation can apply to healthy weight loss as long as you account for the more calorie-dense foods. Losing weight in a healthy manner is achievable when you seek guidance and follow some timetested techniques.

The meal will be available to go, with a few small tables set up for people to eat at the church if desired. Details of the meal have not been finalized yet.

As Brosky explained, the idea for the giveaway came from a previous pastor, who

wanted to do something to serve the community. “We’ve kept up the event over the years, and our whole church gathers together to make it happen,” she stated. For the past two years, the giveaway wasn’t held at the church due to COVID, but the congrega-

tion still donated clothing throughout the community, Brosky said.

The church has been collecting donations from the community throughout the month of January, and the youth groups will begin sorting and organizing the items on the Wednesday before the giveaway. “Everyone pitches in from our church,” Brosky remarked. “Adults and youth work for the next two days so everything is categorized by gender and size. Volunteers also make the meal.”

She emphasized that the giveaway is for anyone in need. “No one is turned away and there are no qualifications to take part in this,” she said. “Whoever comes for this

we accept with open arms.”

Brosky noted that the event helps the church fulfill its mission. “We have a tagline we like to use: ‘God’s work, our hands,’” she said.

“This is a way for us to let the community know that we as a church are here for them.”

In the past, the giveaway has attracted more than 300 people, she said, but there is always plenty of food and clothing for everyone. “Even if you can’t come till later in the morning, you should still come,” she said. “You are welcome anytime.”

Dads And Daughters Are Invited To Dance

Karen Eberly, senior program coordinator at GEARS, said there’s one day a year that really catches her attention: GEARS’ annual Daddy/Daughter Dance. “This is an event that makes you stop and take notice,” she shared, noting that she often works the registration table and then enjoys watching the kids with their fathers. “This is something I always go to, and I love to peek in the door and see what’s happening. It’s

fun to see.”

The Daddy/Daughter Dance will be held on Friday, Feb. 3, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Masonic Village Salon 1, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown.

It’s open to girls of any age, Eberly said. “We’ve had kids as young as 2 or 3 and as old as 12 or 13,” she stated.

Although it’s called a Daddy/Daughter Dance, girls are encouraged to invite any male role model in their life.

“It could be their grandfather, uncle, older brother who is at least 18 years old, their neighbor, any male figure in their life,” Eberly remarked. “We get a lot of girls who come with someone other than their father.” The only stipulation, she noted, is that girls cannot come with their mom or other female adults. “We have a mother/son bowling night for moms,” she said, noting that the bowling event will be held on Saturday, March 4, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Clearview Lanes in Mount Joy.

This is the 16th year for the

Daddy/Daughter Dance, and Eberly attributes its popularity to the fun participants have. “It’s a fancy and formal atmosphere,” she said. “Most of the dads dance. Some of the girls have corsages with matching flowers for their dad. Some get their hair and nails done before they come.”

Along with dancing to music provided by a DJ, the event will feature arts and crafts, including coloring pages and a picture frame, perfect for displaying photos taken at the dance. “We will have a professional photographer, so the girls and their dads will get to pose for a photo and take it home that night,” Eberly commented. “We’ll also have a photo booth with props for people to take selfies.” Snacks and drinks will be provided as well.

Eberly recommends registering early for the dance, noting that attendance will be capped at 250 people. “This is a unique opportunity for a dad and daughter to spend time together,” she said. “It’s such a special night to see the bond developing between a father and a daughter. It’s a fun night.”

The registration deadline for the Daddy/Daughter Dance is Friday, Jan. 27. There is a set fee per couple, with a discounted additional fee for additional daughters.

“When people come in, they’ll be met by a greeter in the lobby who will give them a program and a pen to comment on the art,” Beach said. “There will be comment cards at the tables, and people can write what they think about the art and then drop their comments off in a bowl when they leave.” The comments are invariably positive, she noted, and students will have the opportunity to see what the community thought of their art when their piece and its comments are returned to them after the show.

Beach said she enjoys promoting the student artists who might come to the show with their friends and family.

“If I know there is an artist in the room, I make sure people know, ‘This is one of our artists,’ so the kids can get some in-person glory, too,” she said.

The Student Art Show began five years ago as a way for the library to participate in

Main Street Mount Joy’s Festival of the Arts, which will be held this year on Friday, Jan. 27, and Saturday, Jan. 28. “Come in and check out our art and then head downtown to see all of the art at Mount Joy’s show,” Beach said.

She credits event sponsor Nolt Electric Inc. and Premier

Linen Company, which donated the use of table linens, with helping to make the art show a success. “The art show is such a positive, beautiful experience. Who knew the depths of talents of kids this young?” she said. “It doesn’t cost a thing to come and see some student art.”

Grant Provides Truck To Power Packs Project

Using a targeted regional commitment to address food insecurity, the High Foundation has awarded Power Packs Project a grant in the amount of $55,000 for the purchase of a 20-foot box truck. Power Packs will now be able to transport more than five times more fresh produce and other nonperishable food to families in need in the community.

Power Packs executive director Brad Peterson explained that the new truck has the capacity to move up to five tons of food. In the past, he noted, Power Packs would need to make multiple trips to pick up or deliver food and sometimes had to turn down donations because of the lack of transportation. He added that the truck will go a long way to increase access to fresh, nutritious food for families in Power Packs’ 90 partner schools in Lancaster and Lebanon counties.

The truck will be operational immediately and will be used in deliveries to Power Packs affiliates and partner
