Nicholai Brotzman pinned his opponent 13 seconds into the heavyweight bout to help Donegal outduel Ephrata in a close Lancaster-Lebanon League wrestling match on Tuesday, January 4.
The 37-28 victory raised the Indians’ record to 3-0 while the Mountaineers fell to 1-2. Brotzman pinned Frank Riggs to help Donegal pull even 28-28. The win came at a crucial point because the Mountaineers forfeited the 106-pound bout, setting the stage for Noah Hinkel’s 5-0 victory at 113, clinching the victory for the Indians.
It was an up-and-down match with Ephrata taking an early lead on a 12-7 decision at 120, only to see Jordell Jones post an early pin for Donegal at the 126-pound weight class for a 6-3 lead.
Over the next four bouts, the Mountaineers registered two pins while the Indians managed a major decision thanks to Landen Baughman at 138.
Andrew Small came up with a big pin at 160 for Donegal followed by an uncontested 172 by the Mounts, giving Scott Garcia six team points and a 22-18 Donegal lead.
Ephrata’s major decision and pin put the home team up 28-22 before the three straight Donegal wins closed out the match.
