You’re invited to get creative during a two-day event at Donegal High School. Crop and Craft will be held from 3 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, in the high school cafeteria, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. The event is an opportunity for crafters to work on their projects in a fun, relaxing environment, said Susan Heydt, who is organizing the event. Proceeds from the Crop and Craft will benefit scholarships to attend Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competitions and Kiwanis Key Leader Camp.

“Scrapbookers, artists, fiber artists and crafters are invited to join in the fun of this time of camaraderie with others sharing similar hobbies,” stated Heydt, who is the Key Club adviser at the high school. “There is plenty of space to spread out, and we have people who use the tables to lay out big fiber pieces they’re working on.”

Participants will be able to work on anything they bring with them,

and members of Donegal’s National Art Honor Society (NAHS) will host breakout sessions throughout the event, featuring demonstrations on a variety of art mediums.

“The breakout sessions are a good opportunity to learn about something maybe you haven’t seen or heard of before,” said senior Isabelle Morrison, president of the NAHS, who will run one of the sessions.

Senior Madison Arroyo, president of Donegal’s Key Club, noted that students will help participants carry in supplies and get set up. She said she was surprised at how quiet the event was last time she attended. “Everyone is so focused on their projects,” she noted. “It’s just a relaxed, welcoming environment.”

Members of FBLA are taking care of marketing the event, said freshman Abbie Waldron, club treasurer. “ We’re handling the advertising, and we made the registration form and we’re tracking registration payments,” she stated. FBLA members participate in competitions throughout the year, which will be funded using proceeds from the

Crop and Craft. Freshman Sami Ankeny will compete in financial math in an upcoming event, and freshman Molly O’Brien will participate in a hospitality management competition later this month.

Heydt got the idea for Crop and Craft after hearing about a similar event organized annually by a sorority at Millersville University. Crop and Craft events were held in 2019 and 2020, and this year will mark the event’s return after a twoyear absence during the pandemic.

Pizza and salad will be served Friday night, and coffee will be available Saturday morning, along with soup and sandwiches for lunch. “The soups are awesome,” Heydt said, noting that parents make and donate them, with additional food provided by local businesses.

Registration for Crop and Craft is available at https://tinyurl.com /y43e52rr. Participants may pay at the door if room is available, but Heydt recommends preregistration.

In the event of snow, the Crop and Craft will be postponed to Friday, March 3, and Saturday, March 4.

Art abounds on Fridays at Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA), when Art Heals classes are held for people in recovery. The works that students created over the past year will be displayed at the Art Heals Art Show, to be held on Friday, Jan. 27, from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Jan. 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“People in this class are living in recovery housing, so it’s still early in their recovery,” noted Stacy Emminger, executive director of DSAA. “Our instructor is a retired art professor, and she has 39 years of recovery herself. She shares her experiences, talks about what art has done for her and talks about how it’s been an integral part of her recovery.”

W hile the program focuses on art, Emminger noted the Friday sessions have a festive atmosphere. “We have snacks, we play music. It’s more like a party,” she said, adding that her pit bull, Blaze, is often in attendance. “The people who come just love him.”

Emminger said many of the Art Heals participants are hesitant to get started when they first come to an Art Heals class. “So many of them are like, ‘I’m not an artist. I don’t know how to do this,’” she shared. “Then you see their work, and it’s like, ‘Wow!’”

There are quite a few tall tales surrounding Manheim resident Jack Fasig - literally. Jack, who was born in 1894, was famous for his height and strength. He was 7 feet tall and weighed 400 pounds. Despite his size, however, Jack was known for being a kind man. Author Mike Gerhard tells the story of Jack in a new children’s book, “Gentle Giant: A Story of Jack Fasig, Legend of Lancaster.”

Geared toward children ages 4 to 10, the book teaches a lesson about kindness.

“Jack was very powerful and very kind,” Gerhard wrote in the story. “He was not a bully. He used his great strength to help others. Jack knew that with great power came a

greater responsibility.”

To write the book, Gerhard did extensive research on Jack, working with Cory Van Brookhoven, president of the Lititz Historical Foundation; the Manheim Historical Society; the Historical Society of Pennsylvania; and other peo-

ple and organizations.

Although much of the book is historically accurate, the story begins with a disclaimer: “Some of what follows is true.” While Gerhard embellished some of the tales of Jack’s size and strength, he included facts such as Jack’s nicknames, including “Man Mountain” and “Lancaster’s Paul Bunyan.” The book also details Jack’s intelligence, noting that he was valedictorian of his high school, often quoted Shakespeare and was known for singing German operas.

Gerhard, who grew up in Lititz but moved to Manheim when he married his wife,

Donna, worked at Raymark years ago. “Everyone there talked about Jack,” he recalled. “They said how big and strong he was, and there were all kinds of rumors about him.”

Over the years, Gerhard began collecting information on Jack. He thought he might write a novel about Jack but struggled to complete it. “Then my daughter said, ‘Dad, you like to draw. Why not do a children’s book?’” Gerhard recalled. “One of the reasons I wanted to do this book was to tell Jack’s story and make sure he is not forgotten.”

Gerhard worked on the

book during the height of the pandemic, some days spending 10 minutes on it, some days working for hours to write the story and draw the illustrations. Once the book was finished, he considered publishing it through a traditional publisher, but changed his mind once he realized that could take a while. “I’m 72,” he said. “Most of the publishers said it could be six months till they got back to me, and I can’t wait that long.” Instead, he self-published the book, which was released in late 2022.

Depending on how this book is received, Gerhard said he’d love to write a sequel. He hopes that children will take away an important message from the book. “I wanted to teach a lesson,” he said. “Kindness is its own reward.”

Gerhard will sign copies of his book at Stauffers of Kissel Hill, 945 E. Main St., Mount Joy, on Saturday, Jan. 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The book is available for sale at Longeneckers True Value, 127 Doe Run Road, Manheim, and on Amazon.

Litter Prevention Program Set At Welcome Centers

America Recycles Day, a program of Keep America Beautiful, is observed on and around Nov. 15 to educate residents of the commonwealth and encourage them to be mindful of what they consume, learn where and how to properly recycle, and pledge to recycle correctly and more often in their everyday lives.

In celebration of America Recycles Day, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful highlighted the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP). Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is partnering with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to implement the CLPP at 14 state welcome

centers in 2022 and 2023.

The program aims to raise travelers’ awareness of the issue of proper cigarette butt disposal using messaging and marketing campaigns and placing ash receptacles at entrances to rest stop buildings. The effectiveness of the program will be measured by comparing pre- and post-program scans or physical counts of cigarette butts and other tobacco products.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has a partnership with Terracylce to expand the program to include recycling and composting the cigarette butt waste. Cigarettes collected through CLPP are shipped to

Church To Serve Ham Dinner

St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 27 E. Main St., Mount Joy, will serve a ham dinner on Sunday, Jan. 15. In addition to meat, the meal will include macaroni and cheese, a vegetable, a roll and butter, and dessert. Meals will be available for pickup from 4 to 5 p.m.

Although there is no cost for the meals, reservations are required. Reservations may be made by calling the church office at 717-6535493, ext. 222, by noon on Thursday, Jan. 12. Callers should give their name and phone number and the number of dinners they want.

Terracycle where the various materials that make up a cigarette are separated and processed. The filters are melted into hard plastic that can be remolded to make new recycled industrial products, such as plastic pallets. The residual tobacco and paper are composted in a specialized process.

Cigarette butts that are thrown on the ground can contaminate soil and ground water with chemicals and heavy metals and fatally impact birds, animals and marine life, which often mistake them for food. Aditionally, the filters, made of cellulose acetate, never fully disappear from the environment.

In support of America Recycles Day, all Pennsylvanians are encouraged to take the #BeRecycled pledge and promise to recycle at home, work and school, and on the go; buy products made with recycled content; and educate friends, family members, and neighbors, and encourage them to take the #BeRecycled pledge. Pieces Of The Past

When driving through eastern Lancaster County on Lincoln Highway, you might not notice a small, yellow building between Ronks and Soudersburg. Although the unassuming structure could pass as a quaint residence, within its walls resides a unique collection of history that has been assembled by its curator, Stephen Meyers.

Bible History Exhibits, located at 2827 East Lincoln Highway in Ronks, boasts a display of archaeological replicas and information that is related to the Bible. The exhibit begins with the book of Genesis and follows the Bible’s timeline through the book of Revelation; replicas of tablets, statues, weapons and scrolls that reference the

events of the Bible are placed in chronological order in the display. “Most people may be reading the Bible but may not know that there’s a lot of archaeology and discoveries that directly relate to it,” Meyers said.

Each replica refers to civilizations or events that existed at the same time as biblical characters if it does not refer to these characters directly. The beginning of the exhibit displays replicas of tablets that refer to the epic of Gilgamesh, the Great Flood and the Tower of Babel. Archaeological discoveries made in Egypt populate the section of the exhibit that documents the book of Exodus, followed by replicas of artifacts from Israel, Assyria, Babylon, Persia and Greece in biblical times.

“The real artifacts are in museums around the world,” Meyers said. “I’ve made replicas and brought them together so that you don’t have to travel to the other side of the globe to see everything.” Meyers occasionally acquires replicas from other people, but more often he creates the replicas himself. He stays up to date on the latest news of archeological discoveries so that he can recreate them and add them to the exhibit. Each segment of the exhibit is also accompanied by informational pieces that detail how some of the artifacts were created or used. One such educational display shows how ancient peoples tanned leather and treated papyrus to fashion into scrolls.

In addition to the artifacts and informational displays,

Bible History Exhibits is peppered with photographs that Meyers took himself while traveling through the Middle East. When he is not traveling to the ancient world, Meyers resides in Philadelphia, where he moved from Ohio to attend Westminster Theological Seminary. He opened Bible History Exhibits about eight years ago and stays in Lancaster while the museum is open.

Meyers has also written several booklets on various historical topics, which he sells online and at the exhibit. Almost every item in the exhibit is for sale, and the profits from their sales help to keep the exhibit open. Bible History Exhibits operates under The Institute for Biblical and Scientific Studies, a nonprofit organization.

4-H Horse Club Plans Meeting

Artfrompg 1

Emminger credits instructor Nancy Mendes with encouraging participants to explore their creative side, even if they have no art experience at all. “Part of the lesson she teaches is to put ego aside,” Emminger remarked. “You may be saying to yourself, ‘I’m not an artist,’ but put that aside. Don’t listen to that voice. Use the colors and the medium we’re doing that day, and let the art come through you. That’s your spirit coming through.”

Art plays an important role in recovery, Emminger said. “When you’re using substances, you’re essentially burying your soul and you’re out of touch with your feelings. You’re using to avoid your feelings,” she stated. “Art - and all the humanities like poetry, music, writing - brings you back in touch with your soul. Art helps you process

emotions.”

When participants complete the Art Heals class, they have the option of taking their artwork home with them or leaving it at DSAA. “They know if they leave it, it’s going to be in the art show,” Emminger said, noting that the timing of the show corresponds with Mount Joy’s Festival of the Arts. The artists will come a day or two before the show to help set up the room with panels and temporary walls to display the art. “We set it up like a gallery, and we hang the pieces,” Emminger commented. “They are always amazed to see their art up on the wall.”

Artwork is available to take home by donation at the show. For more information on DSAA, www.dsasquared.org or search for “DSAA - Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance” on Facebook.

The Spinnin’ Spurs 4-H Horse Club will hold an organizational meeting on Monday, Jan. 9, in the Multi-Purpose Room at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will include discussion of plans for the year, a review of enrollment information, time for questions, and ice breaker activities. Youths need to bring a parent/legal guardian to the meeting.

The 4-H Horse Cloverbuds, open to children ages 5 to 7, will also meet at the same

time and same location. Attendees will be provided with their own age-appropriate books and activities.

Open to members ages 8 to 18, the Spinnin’ Spurs 4-H Horse Club provides educational opportunities but does not provide horses or riding lessons. Owning a horse is not required.

There is a club membership fee. For details, contact Melissa Reed at melissareed4h @gmail.com. For more information on the 4-H program, contact Lori Little at 717-394-6851 or lancasterext@psu.edu.
