YORK COUNTY is a Great Place to... … Connect With the Great Outdoors York County offers a variety of recreational opportunities that allow residents and visitors to get outside and reconnect with nature. Venture outdoors and enjoy a leisurely stroll on the Heritage Rail Trail, which features 21 miles of trail with three historic structures along the way. The trail is enjoyed by walkers, hikers, joggers, and horseback riders alike. The Heritage Rail Trail is also bicycle-friendly, and Sunset Scramble and Moonlight Bike Rides are offered in spring and summer. (Note: A section of the Heritage Rail Trail will be closed during part of 2016 for improvements, so visitors should check out www.downtownyorkpa.com/railtrail for further details before their visit.) Cyclists can also enjoy mountain bike trails at Rocky Ridge, William H. Kain, Apollo, Codorus, and Gifford Pinchot parks. “Go take a hike!” is great advice for those in York County: All three state parks within York County and most of the county parks boast hiking opportunities, including Pinchot Park’s 18 miles of trails and Codorus Park’s 19 miles of trails. The nearly 200-mile Mason-Dixon Trail, which connects the Appalachian Trail and the Brandywine Trail, traverses through York County, passing through Pinchot Park and then heading south down the bank of the Susquehanna River. From the trail, hikers can enjoy views of Pinchot Lake, the Susquehanna River, the Holtwood Dam, ospreys and other animal life, and more. For those who enjoy spending time out on the water, York County also has plenty to offer. Pinchot and

Codorus state parks offer boating and kayaking opportunities, as do Lake Redman and Lake Williams in William Kain County Park. The Susquehanna River provides quite the playground for boaters, jet skiers, and paddle sport enthusiasts. When the weather is nice, Lake Clarke, a manmade lake along the Susquehanna, is filled with motorboats, pontoon boats, houseboats, and even sailboats taking advantage of the Long Level Marina and Susquehanna Yacht Club. Shank’s Mare Outfitters serves as a hub for renting fishing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding gear, among other things, and also offers fun events, lessons, and sales of outdoor equipment. Interested in exploring the great outdoors but in need of some guidance? York County Parks and Recreation offers a full slate of programming throughout the year. More information on the department’s educational and recreational offerings is available by visiting yorkcountypa.gov/parks-recreation.html. The York Hiking Club (www.yorkhikingclub.com/) also offers a slate of group hikes of various lengths.

York’s own Atlantic League baseball team, the Revolution (www.york revolution.com), is marking its 10th anniversary season in 2016. Special “Celebrate York” 10th anniversary giveaways offered throughout the season will honor York and York County’s favorite sons and daughters for contributions in the spheres of sports, government, military and pop culture. Giveaways will be tailored specifically to the honoree, with many receiving the bobblehead treatment. Plus, any trip to the ballpark includes opportunities to enjoy a variety of tasty food items, take in the hijinks of mascot DownTown and soak up the sights and sounds of America’s pastime. In addition to being the site of contests between the Revolution and Atlantic League opponents, PeoplesBank Stadium will host National Pro Fastpitch Softball on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 31 and June 1, with the PA Rebellion facing off against the Akron Racers. York County’s athletics scene also includes a variety of sports played by high school teams from around the county. Girls and boys face off throughout the school year on local tracks and cross-country courses; tennis, basketball and volleyball courts; lacrosse, soccer, field hockey and football fields; swimming pools; and wrestling mats, offering spectators plenty of opportunities to take in the action. York County received international attention in 2015 when Lewisberry’s Red Land Little League (www.redlandlittleleague.com/) won the U.S. Little League Championship during the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., and faced off against Japan for the World Series Championship. The community rallied around the team, whose success inspired many other local teams to strive to be York County’s next great Cinderella story. Community members can also cheer on the more than 600 seniors from York County who are expected to participate in the 15th annual York County Senior Games. The event, which
