Scout Completes Project At Lindley Hill Cemetery By Francine Fulton

St. Elizabeth Catholic Church will conduct a special series called “Catholics Coming Home” beginning on Monday, Jan. 6, 2020, at 7 p.m. at the church, located at Pottstown Pike and Fellowship Road in Upper Uwchlan. The sessions are designed for Catholics seeking answers to questions about returning to the church. There will be informal sharing and an update of the Catholic faith. Centennial Lutheran Church, 1330 Hares Hill Road, Kimberton, will host special services during the Christmas season. All are invited to attend. On Wednesday, Dec. 18, a “Blue Christmas” service will begin at 7:30 p.m. The service will be a reflective, prayerful service of light. Seeking to preserve an important part of local history, Warren Pixley, a member of Lionville Boy Scout Troop 216, has completed restoration efforts at Lindley Hill Cemetery in Downingtown as his required Eagle Scout service project. The cemetery, which was established in 1851, is one of the oldest African American cemeteries in Chester County. It is the final resting place of many soldiers from the Civil War, as well as World Wars I and II. The cemetery is owned by Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC) of Downingtown. Thanks to Warren’s efforts, as well as those of his fellow Scouts, the cemetery is almost completely restored, graves are mapped and only a few headstones are waiting to be repaired. After funds were raised to purchase needed materials, the project included hundreds of See Scout Project pg 6

“Christmas Treecycling” Program Slated Green Valleys Watershed Association (GVWA) will offer a Christmas Treecycling program on Saturday, Dec. 21, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Welkinweir, located at 1368 Prizer Road, Pottstown. Children will discover different ways to recycle a used Christmas tree. They will create food-based decorations and decorate a tree and help wildlife survive the winter weather. Participants should dress for the season and wear sturdy shoes. The program will begin at Welkinweir’s Education Barn; parking will be available in the visitor parking lot off 1368 Prizer Road. The program is geared toward children ages 6 to 12, and an adult must accompany children. There is an admission fee, and GVWA members will See Treecycling pg 2

(CPC) in Downingtown, recently participated in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Scouting for Food program. As part of the annual effort, the boys See Pack 23 pg 5

Nearly 400 participants turned out for the 28th annual Turkey Bowl held on Thanksgiving morning at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat in Honey Brook. This year’s runners and walkers had to brave blustery conditions. “Despite the wind, we had 389 participants this year,” said camp director Bruce Gregory. “Some runners commented how windy it was around the lake, but they otherwise enjoyed the race.” The Turkey Bowl, which included a 5K race, as well as a 1-mile fun run for children, attracted local residents and those from out of town who were visiting relatives in the area. “As is the case each year, we had many local runners as well as participants from all over the country from Florida to Maine and from New Jersey See Turkey Bowl pg 3
