Chester Springs Library Names New Director Programming Slated For Patrons Of All Ages

Nancy Niggel was recently named the new director of the Chester Springs Library. She succeeds Nancy McLaughlin, who retired in August after serving the library for 10 years.

Niggel said she heard about the position on the Chester County Library System’s website, where job opportunities are listed. After applying, she was interviewed by the library’s board of trustees.

Niggel has years of experience working in libraries. Most recently, she was a reference librarian at the Chester County Library in Exton. Prior to that, she was the children’s librarian at the Royersford Free Library in Montgomery County for 13 years.

The Chester Springs Library will present a variety of programming in December and in January 2019, designed to interest patrons of all ages.

The library will offer “Frosty Friends” Preschool Story Times on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m., with the exception of Dec. 26 and 28.

The program will feature stories, songs, activities and a simple craft. Children of all ages are welcome, and no registration is required.

Volunteers and staff members at St. Mary of Providence Retreat Center in Elverson are busy decorating the site’s mansion in preparation for a Christmas open house to be held on Sunday, Dec. 16, from 1 to 5 p.m.

During the event, visitors will be able to tour the 67-room mansion, known as Langoma, which is a Native American term that means “homestead.” A fee will be charged for the guided tours, with separate prices set for adults and for children age 12 and over. Children under age 12 will be admitted for free.

The congregation at Grace Covenant Church in Exton will welcome Christopher Wright as its new director of worship beginning on Sunday, Dec. 16, at the church’s 9:30 a.m. Sunday worship service.

Wright is a professional singer and songwriter and is also the founder of a national concert ministry, Blessed Hurricane Ministries. Prior to accepting the new position, he was a guest worship leader this past summer at Grace Covenant.

clients experiencing homelessness, of which more than 1,300 were children. Nearly 225,000 nights of emergency shelter were made available to the most vulnerable in Chester County, and 1,451 people found permanent housing.

Earlier this year, Decade to Doorways published its most recent operational plan to ensure the program continues to prevent homelessness and quickly re-house those experiencing homelessness rather than just manage homelessness. The updated plan will guide the approximately 35 organizations that work to see that the Chester County community is healthy, housed and stable.

Administrators and staff of Decade to Doorways, Chester County’s initiative to end homelessness, recently honored a number of organizations that are working to prevent and eventually eradicate chronic homelessness in the county. Representatives from approximately 40 groups attended the event, and 10 Hometown Heroes were nominated by their peers for their dedication to pursuing an end to homelessness within Chester County.

The event included an address by keynote speaker Julia Orlando, who, as director of the Bergen County, N.J., Housing, Health and Human Service Center, led that county to be the first in the nation to successfully reach and maintain what is known as functional zero for chronic homelessness.

Centennial Lutheran Church, 1330 Hares Hill Road, Kimberton, has posted its schedule.

On Sunday, Dec. 16, the third Sunday of Advent, there will be a worship service at 9:30 a.m. The service will include a message by pastor Jerry Tancredi and the celebration of Holy Communion. During the worship service, the third candle of the Advent wreath will be lit.

“There are Scout leaders who are involved with the museum,� explained Ann Helms, Troop 140 committee secretary and public relations chair. “They have been kind enough to (provide) a list of Eagle Scout projects and offer them to the troop members.�

Morgan led a team of Scouts to rehabilitate a 1920s-era industrial air pump, which was installed in the machine shop at the museum, where it will be a part of the permanent working display. Morgan is pursuing an engineering degree at Penn State University’s main campus.

John led a team of Scouts to rehabilitate a rare early example of an 1868 Tolman shaping machine, which is used to cut metal. The machine has also been installed in the museum’s machine shop. John is currently a student at the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh.

The tree should be placed away from heat sources. Placing trees away from heat sources, such as radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, and lights, reduces the likelihood that trees will dry out and also reduces the risk of fire.

A few simple strategies can help holiday revelers ensure their Christmas trees make it through the holiday season unscathed.

When purchasing natural trees, holiday celebrants, especially those who like to buy their trees in early December, may be concerned about keeping their trees fresh throughout the holiday season. Several tips can help trees last until the final present is unwrapped and the last of the egg nog has been consumed.

The first tip is to buy a freshly cut tree. Whenever possible, people should cut their own trees.

This ensures that the tree they bring home is fresh, increasing the chances it will remain so throughout the season. If it is not possible to cut one’s own tree, the National Fire Protection Association notes that fresh trees should have green needles that do not come off when touched.

Trees that appear to be dried out or those that shed needles when touched should be avoided.

The Tree Care Industry Association advises consumers to protect their Christmas trees as they transport them home. The tree should be wrapped in a plastic wrap so it makes it home damage-free. A damaged tree might not make it through the holiday season.

Pre-cut trees should be cut again before leaving the lot. Precut trees can make it through the holiday season looking their best, but buyers should request that employees cut as much as two inches off the bottom of the tree

Boy Scout Troop 140 recognized four Eagle Scouts at a Court of Honor ceremony held recently at St. Peter United Church of Christ (UCC) in Knauertown. Families, friends, fellow Scouts and dignitaries, including state Sen. John Rafferty and Rep. Tim Hennessey, were in attendance to honor the Eagle Scouts - Simon Crew, Tristan Fish, Morgan Norris and John McDevitt - all 2018 graduates of Owen J. Roberts (OJR) High School.

Obtaining the rank of Eagle, which is the highest award in Boy Scouting, requires that a candidate complete a series of merit badges, as well as an approved community service project that demonstrates the Scout’s leadership skills.

For his project, Simon led a team of Scouts to plan, design, construct and install a collection of post-mounted, selfserve lending library nooks in

North Coventry Township locations. Simon also led a book drive to collect books needed to fill the library nooks. Simon is pursuing a business degree in West Chester University’s Honors College.

Tristan led a team of Scouts to plan, design, construct and install three large wooden receptacles, each holding two 55-gallon cans for recycling and landfill waste, respectively. The receptacles were installed for the benefit of the Althouse Arboretum located in Pottstown. Tristan is pursuing an engineering degree at Widener University.

For their projects, Morgan and John completed tasks at the Rough and Tumble Museum in Kinzers. The nonprofit antique farm machinery museum, which is dedicated to preserving agricultural and industrial history, displays and operates steam engines and other machinery such as gas tractors, various construction machines, a sawmill and more.

The Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) is currently seeking volunteers willing to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills through its adult tutoring program. According to Debbie Rikess, who is the new adult tutoring program coordinator, there is a current waiting list of 22 people located throughout Chester County who are in need of volunteer

Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. “We ask them to meet at public locations,” Rikess explained. “We have a lot of people from Exton, West Chester, Downingtown and Coatesville that like to meet at the Chester County Library in Exton. “It’s a great location for people to meet.” She said that most student/tutor pairs meet twice a week for an hour and a half each time.

In the past, tutors were required to attend a training workshop held at the library in Exton. Now, the program offers online training for tutors. “We recently switched to online training

technology, engineering and math (STEM). It is designed that (children) can play any game with their adult (caregiver).”

Children in kindergarten through grade five can read with Paddy, a certified therapy dog, as part of the Tail Waggin’ Tutors program. Paddy, a Jack Russell terrier, will be available on Wednesdays, Dec. 12 and

“They will be building structures with marshmallows and uncooked spaghetti noodles,” Niggel explained. “We will see

who can make the tallest tower that stands by itself.”

Children will also decorate a snowman cupcake to take home.

The program will conclude with a balloon drop stomp. Registration is required at the library website.

“Shakespeare Line by Line” will be offered beginning on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, at 1 p.m. The class will be led by Charles Conwell, a retired professor of theater from the University of the Arts. “This is a six-session (program), and he will go line by line through three of Shakespeare’s plays - ‘Twelfth Night,’ ‘As You Like It’ and ‘Much Ado About Nothing,’” said Niggel, noting that there will be time for questions and comments during the readings.

“Shakespeare Line by Line” will continue on Sundays, Jan. 13 to Feb. 10.

Wright noted that though Amanda was unable to see, walk or talk, she taught her family lessons about God’s

love. “Holding her was like holding an angel,” he recalled.

“She was a gift from God that helped us to really depend on Him and look to Him for everything. It kept me close to Him because I was dependent on Him like she was dependent on us.”

In founding the ministry, Wright’s goal was to use his music to comfort others. “From the time she was born, I started writing songs from my broken place and started to minster to people. I was going around to different churches and sharing her story and our journey and the ministry of the God of all comfort,” said Wright. “The music in my concert ministry is geared toward helping people who are struggling to see God in the midst of their trials.”

He said that the part-time position will allow him to continue his concert ministry. “On Sunday mornings I will be (at Grace Covenant) and my wife, Jeannie, and I will be joining the church,” he said. “We’ll be anchored at Grace Covenant, and that will be our home church base. Her decision to apply for the director position in Chester Springs was based on her love of small libraries. “Royersford is a small library, Chester County is a huge library and this is a little library,” she said.

“I really like the little libraries because I can be involved in everything. I can do children’s (programs) and help with adult reference.”

As the new director at Chester Springs Library, her goal is to add programs for patrons of all ages. “I want to add a lot more children’s programming and family programming so that we can increase

our foot traffic,” said Niggel.

“After I get (acclimated), I would like to do some more adult classes in the afternoons and on the weekends to teach people how to use the databases and the e-resources like the e-books and downloads.”

In her new position, Niggel gets to oversee the staff and volunteers and manage the library budget. “I also get to do all of the collection development,” she added.

Niggel was introduced to the public during a reception on Nov. 8. In attendance at the event were patrons, staff members, volunteers, community members and West Pikeland

Township supervisors. “The board gave me an open house and it was open to the public, and we had close to 70 or 80 people drop in,” she said.

The public is encouraged to visit the library to meet the director and view the building’s holiday decorations that were put up by volunteers.

Representatives from Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) recently received a donation from Chester County Commissioners Michelle Kichline, Kathi Cozzone, and Terence Farrell for $300,000.

The funds, made available through a community development block grant, have been used to purchase a new primary office location for Chester County OIC in Coatesville.

Proclamation Raises CO Awareness

As part of an ongoing effort to warn the public about the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, Donna and Matt Imbierowicz of Coatesville, founders of the Carly Imbierowicz Foundation, recently traveled to Harrisburg to meet with state Sen. Andy Dinniman, who sponsored a Senate resolution officially designating November 2018 as Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.

The foundation is named for the late Carly Marie Imbierowicz, who, along with her friend Daulton “Daulty� Pointek, passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning on the way home from a movie in November 2014 when a broken exhaust pipe allowed deadly carbon monoxide gas to

enter the car through the passenger air vents. Both Carly and Daulton were students at Octorara Area High School.

Since then, Carly’s mother, Donna, has been an advocate for raising awareness of the dangers and prevalence of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Also in attendance at the meeting with Dinniman was Kayla Stoltzfus, who was Carly’s friend and a member of Daulton’s class at Octorara. Kayla is currently a student at West Chester University. “(Kayla) did her senior project on CO awareness, and now she has taken the CO awareness advocacy to West Chester University,� Donna explained.

She noted that Kayla also helps out at the Octorara Angels Rainbow 5K Run/Walk and Car-

Donna noted that the proclamation was on display at a CO awareness table manned by Octorara graduate Hannah Unitis at Our Lady of Consolation Parish’s annual Christmas craft fair and bazaar on Nov. 17 and at a CO awareness table at Widener University in November, that was manned by Octorara graduate Sarah Black and the Alpha Omega Epsilon sorority.

Dinniman also took the time to warn residents about the dangers of CO, especially in wintertime. “As colder temperatures set in, more residents are using heaters, fireplaces, furnaces, gen-

erators and other appliances that produce carbon monoxide,� he stated. “There’s also the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning in malfunctioning vehicles or those with exhaust pipes that are blocked by leaves, mud or snow.

It’s important to be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning and take steps to prevent it because it can very difficult to detect.�

Carbon monoxide is called the “silent killer� because it is colorless, odorless and tasteless and it cannot be detected by humans without the help of an alarm or detector.

Dinniman said he remains committed to educating motorists, especially teenagers and student drivers, about the threat of carbon monoxide poisoning. Through these efforts, PennDOT has revised the Pennsylvania Driver’s Manual to include important information about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Hopewell UMC To Take Part in Wreaths Across America Each December, Wreaths Across America’s mission to “remember, honor and teach” is carried out by volunteers who participate in wreath-laying ceremonies at more than 1,400 locations in all 50 states, at sea and abroad.

This year, on Dec. 1, Wreaths Across America placed 9,387 Maine-made, balsam veterans’ wreaths on the headstones of all U.S. service members laid to rest at Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, located in Colleville-sur-Mer, France.

Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC) will join with organizations from all over the United States to observe Wreaths Across America Day on Saturday, Dec. 15.

The ceremony at Hopewell UMC will begin at 11 a.m. in the church sanctuary, where the altar will be decorated with red and white poinsettias, with the

crèche prominently displayed in the foreground.

The ceremony will include the presentation of colors by cadets from West Chester University ROTC, the playing of the national anthem, a time of silence to remember the prisoners of war (POW) and those missing in action (MIA), the presentation of the seven ceremonial wreaths honoring all branches of the U.S. military, the playing of taps and special remarks by pastor John Neider, a veteran of the United States Air Force.

Following the ceremony, attendees will walk across the street to the church cemetery to lay the wreaths on the graves of more than 300 veterans from the Revolutionary War to the Persian Gulf War. The 2018 theme is “Be Their Witness,” and each of the veterans’ names will be spoken. The community is invited to participate.

Instructions: Preheat oven to 400 F. Combine brisket, ribeye, ground beef, stuffing mix, egg, water, garlic, salt, and pepper in a large bowl, mixing lightly but thoroughly.

Shape into 24 1.5-inch meatballs. Place on a rack in a broiler pan that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Bake for 13 to 15 minutes until the internal temperature reads 160 F.

Meanwhile, prepare the Cranberry Barbecue Sauce.

Heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add onions and garlic; cook and stir 2 to 3 minutes, or until tender, but not brown. Add remaining ingredients, stirring to combine. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes, or until cranberries burst and the mixture has been reduced to a thick consistency, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; cool slightly. Transfer mixture to blender container. Cover, allowing steam to escape. Process until smooth.

Season with salt, as desired.

Serve meatballs with barbecue sauce.

“Eliza is a pretty powerful young woman, but we want to make her more so,” said Cordell Huyard, assistant director of the Cavod Theatre production of “My Fair Lady.” “That’s a reason we brought Meredith (Bulgrien) on board (as director of the show). I thought she would look at (the show) through a new lens.”

“My Fair Lady,” the musical based on George Bernard Shaw’s classic play “Pygmalion,” will be staged at the Cavod Theatre, 665 W. Main St., New Holland, on Friday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m.; on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 4 p.m.

“My Fair Lady” tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, played by Hannah Stone. Eliza is a young woman who sells flowers in London.

When professor Henry Higgins, played by Adam Zembower, overhears Eliza’s strong Cockney accent, he wagers his friend, Colonel Pickering, played by Lee Shaffer, that Higgins could teach the woman to speak proper English and pass her off as a proper Edwardian lady. Other cast members include Alex Weaver, James Paxson, Brieaunna Avery, and Jennifer Shaffer.

Huyard said the directors were attracted to “My Fair Lady” because of its witty British humor, but also because the show is a good fit for the Cavod Theatre and because it gave the cast of 25 opportunities to play

December can be tricky because audience members often want to see a production with a holiday feel. Huyard thinks that “My Fair Lady” will fill the bill. “Everything is so warm, and (those who attend) will leave with the Christmas spirit of loving and accepting those around us,” he said.

Bulgrien came to the musical looking for chances to make the characters more realistic. “I haven’t watched the movie, so I don’t have that nostalgia connected to it,” she noted. “But as I read through the script, I … wanted to soften Higgins a bit and make their interactions more believable.

I want it to be really human.”

Tweaking a show with the history that “My Fair Lady” has is not without challenges, however. “People have connections to this show,” noted Bulgrien. “I want to keep what people love about it, even though I want to put a different spin on it.”

Huyard is eyeing the costuming struggles of staging a show that features what he referred to as “three-foot hats.” “One of the challenges is finding the giant hats for the Ascot parade,” he noted.

“Everything with this era is so extravagant, and (we want) to make (audience members feel) swept away on our stage.”

Both Bulgrien and Huyard are impressed with the cast members, who are journeying from all parts of the county for rehearsals. “We have an amazing cast that is so talented, we are breezing through rehearsals,” said Bulgrien. “(The See Empowering Eliza pg 11

Spiced Yogurt Muffins (Yield: 50 servings) 6 1/2 cups plain fat-free Greek yogurt 4 cups water, room temperature 1 box (5 lbs) Gold Medal Muffin Mix, whole grain variety 3 tablespoons McCormick pumpkin pie spice 2 tablespoons McCormick chipotle cinnamon Directions: 1 - Combine yogurt and water in mixing bowl. Whisk until blended. Set aside.

2 - Add spices to dry muffin mix in a large bowl. Add yogurt and water mixture to the muffin mixture. Mix until just blended. Do not overmix.

3 - Using a scoop, portion into greased or lined muffin pans. Bake at 350 F for 24 minutes (or 17 to 20 minutes in a convection oven), until the tops are golden brown.
