Local Students Complete Coding Program By Francine Fulton
Girls Who Code, a national nonprofit organization, was formed six years ago in order to encourage young women to pursue careers in computer technology. Locally, a Girls Who Code evening program was offered at the Henrietta Hankin Branch Library in Chester Springs, where girls in grades six through 12 spent 10 weeks learning how to code. Coding, which means to write computer programming, is used to develop apps, websites and software. The culmination of the project was to create a website, which was unveiled at the final session of the group on Nov. 20. The event included a pizza party for all participants. Girls involved in the program were from various local schools, including the Downingtown STEM Academy, Downingtown High School East, Downingtown
Middle School, Lionville Middle School and Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School (PJP II) in West Brandywine. The facilitator was Mike Mize, who volunteered to lead the program. “The fundamental reason the program exists is because girls are underrepresented in the computer programming field,” he said. “The goal (of the course) was to solve a problem. (The girls) brainstormed potential problems, and they choose to address pollution, which is the theme of the website.” The website that the girls created, www.pollutionsoullution02.weebly.com, includes information about water pollution, including the various types of pollution and possible ways to contain it. “They used a website as a framework and then embedded code onto the website,” Mize explained. “There were two main types of programming they could See Coding Program pg 12
